He’s got a secret weapon: hypno-spray, a chemical that erodes willpower. Jake forces Daphne into a twisted friendship with his insecure, attention-starved ex, Lacey, whose obsession with validation and body image seeps into Daphne’s psyche like poison. As the hypno-spray’s effects deepen, Daphne starts mimicking Lacey’s slutty, validation-hungry behavior, swapping her books coat for crop tops and her self-worth for Instagram likes. By the time Daphne realizes she’s been chemically corrupted, she’s parroting Lacey’s insecurities and dancing on tables for male approval. The ending? Both girls—now equally hollow—strut into a frat party, their self-respect dissolved into the neon-lit haze of performative desire. all characters are above 18 years old.

Chapter 7: Academic Sabotage

The lecture hall smelled of old chalk dust and stale coffee. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, harsh against the pre-dawn gloom outside the tall windows. Daphne slid into a seat near the back, pulling her oversized gray sweater tighter around herself. The thick wool felt like armor. Her glasses slipped down her nose. She pushed them up, fingers trembling slightly. The Sigma Chi stench still clung faintly to her hair. The memory of hands, the circle, Lacey’s whisper… it pulsed behind her eyes like a migraine.

She kept her head down, burying herself in her notebook. Scribbling equations she didn’t see. Trying to anchor herself in the familiar scent of paper and ink. Trying to forget the sticky-sweet smell of cheap vodka and Jake’s predatory smirk.

Footsteps clicked sharply on the linoleum aisle. Perfume, thick and cloying, cut through the stale air. Lacey dropped into the seat beside her, a cascade of blonde hair and tight pink fabric. Her smile was wide, bright, utterly false.

"Hey, Daffy!" Lacey chirped, her voice carrying easily in the half-full hall. Heads turned. "You look… rested." Her eyes raked over Daphne’s pale face, the dark smudges beneath her eyes. "Sort of."

Daphne flinched. "Just tired." Her voice was a rasp.

"Long night?" Lacey leaned in conspiratorially, but didn't lower her voice. "Studying?" A giggle escaped her, sharp and brittle. "Or maybe… servicing those Sigma Chi boys again?" She winked exaggeratedly.

A cold wave washed over Daphne. Her stomach clenched. The room seemed to tilt. The equations blurred.

Lacey gasped theatrically, clapping a hand over her mouth. Her eyes widened in mock horror. "Oh my god!" she stage-whispered, loud enough for the entire back rows to hear. "Was that supposed to be our little secret?" She giggled again, a sound like breaking glass. "Oopsie!"

Daphne’s face ignited. Crimson heat crawled up her neck, burned her ears. She stared fixedly at her notebook, the lines swimming. Her knuckles were white where she gripped her pen. Don’t look up. Don’t react.

Lacey nudged her shoulder. "Don't worry," she hissed, her breath hot against Daphne’s ear. The cheap perfume choked her. "Your secret’s safe with me." She paused, letting the silence stretch, thick with implication. "I won’t tell anyone about your special… study sessions… with the basketball team either." She drew out the words, dripping with innuendo. "Though," she added, leaning back and surveying Daphne critically, "maybe lay off the late-night snacks? Wouldn't want to lose your… appeal." She patted Daphne’s thigh through the thick sweater. "Just looking out for you, babe."

Snickers rippled from nearby seats. Daphne felt eyes drilling into her back, her sides. Curious. Amused. Disgusted. She couldn't tell. She just felt exposed. Stripped bare. The oversized sweater felt suddenly thin, useless. The memory of cold air on her skin in the frat house circle flashed, sharp and nauseating. Lacey’s voice, whispering just relax, echoed.

A guy a few rows down chuckled openly. "Busy girl, huh Cole?"

Daphne squeezed her eyes shut. The buzzing fluorescents drilled into her skull. The scent of Lacey’s perfume mixed with the phantom smell of stale beer and Jake’s spray. Her throat tightened. She couldn’t breathe.

Lacey sighed dramatically, flipping her hair. "Honestly, Daffy," she said, her voice softening into a saccharine coo that somehow cut deeper. "I know everyone’s talking." She gestured vaguely towards the whispering students. "They think you’re a huge slut." She paused, letting the word hang in the air, poisonous and heavy. "But," she added, placing a hand over her heart, "I’ll still be your friend. Someone’s gotta look out for you, right? Before you… you know… really ruin yourself."

The word echoed. Slut. Slut. Slut. It bounced off the lecture hall walls, amplified by the silence that had fallen around them. Daphne’s vision tunneled. The equations dissolved into meaningless scribbles. The pen slipped from her numb fingers, clattering onto the floor.

She couldn’t be here. Not with Lacey’s fake sympathy smothering her. Not with the stares. Not with the word ringing in her ears, mixing with the remembered chants from the frat house circle. Slut. Was that what she was? Was that what they’d made her? What Jake’s spray and Lacey’s whispers had carved into her?

Her chair scraped loudly against the floor as she shoved it back. She didn't look at Lacey. Didn't look at anyone. She kept her eyes fixed on the worn linoleum path to the door. Her legs felt like lead, clumsy. She stumbled slightly.

The fluorescent lights buzzed like angry hornets overhead, bleaching the hallway’s scuffed linoleum. Daphne’s breath hitched, ragged and shallow, as she pushed through the heavy lecture hall door. The cold air outside felt thin, useless against the heat still crawling up her neck. Her oversized sweater, once armor, felt like a shroud.

Behind her, Lacey’s voice sliced through the closing door, sharp and deliberately loud."Gotta run, Daffy! Bathroom break!"A brittle laugh followed. "Probably gonna suck some cock while I'm in there, beats listening to this snoozefest econ crap, am I right?" More laughter echoed from inside the hall, muffled but distinct.Daphne flinched, the crude words landing like physical blows. She kept walking, faster now, head down, focusing on the rhythmic slap of her worn sneakers. The hallway stretched, empty except for the hum of the lights and the phantom whispers clinging to her.Slut.Slut.Slut. It pulsed with her heartbeat.

Footsteps sounded behind her, quickening to match her pace. Two figures fell into step beside her, their shadows stretching long and predatory on the floor. She recognized them vaguely from Sigma Chi – Brad, with his perpetual smirk, and Tyler, taller, quieter, his gaze unnervingly direct."Hey, Cole," Brad said, his voice casual, almost friendly.Too friendly. "Rough morning?" He nudged Tyler, who chuckled low in his throat.Daphne didn’t look up. "Just need air."Her voice was a dry whisper. She veered towards a side corridor leading to a rarely used stairwell, hoping they’d peel off.

They didn’t.Tyler moved smoothly to block her path slightly, forcing her to slow. "Air's overrated," he murmured, his eyes scanning her face, her trembling hands."Heard you were… busy last weekend. At the house."

Brad leaned in, his breath warm and smelling faintly of mint gum. "Yeah, real busy."He grinned."Heard you like… studying." The innuendo was thick, ugly. "Lacey says you’re always up for extra credit."Daphne’s stomach twisted. She tried to sidestep them, but Brad shifted, subtly hemming her in against the cold cinderblock wall. The buzzing lights felt louder here, more oppressive. The pen she’d dropped earlier seemed to roll endlessly in her mind.

"Look," Tyler said, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial murmur. He glanced down the empty hallway."We saw you bolt. Lacey’s being a bitch, right?Total cunt move in there." He offered a semblance of sympathy that felt colder than the wall. "We get it."Brad nodded, his smirk softening into something falsely understanding. "Yeah, man.Rough.You shouldn’t let her talk to you like that." He paused, letting the fake concern hang. "You know… we could help you forget about it.For a minute." His eyes flickered towards the dim stairwell door."Quick one.No one’ll know."

Daphne stared at the peeling paint on the wall beside Tyler’s shoulder. The word slut echoed, merging with Lacey’s laugh, Jake’s smirk in the frat house strobe lights. Her own reflection in Tyler’s watch face looked pale, hollow-eyed, unfamiliar. The numbness that had started in the lecture hall spread, a chilling fog seeping into her bones, muting the panic, the shame, leaving only a terrifying emptiness.

"Come on, Daffy," Brad coaxed, his hand hovering near her elbow, not quite touching."Be cool. You owe us, after that show you put on Saturday." The casual entitlement in his tone was absolute."Just a quick blow.Help you relax."

Tyler shifted, opening the heavy stairwell door with a soft groan.Dank, dusty air wafted out. "In and out," he said, gesturing into the dimness."Five minutes. Then you can go back to class.Fresh start." His smile didn't reach his eyes.

Daphne looked from Brad’s expectant face to the dark maw of the stairwell. The buzzing lights hummed the only protest. Her body felt detached, floating. The thick wool of her sweater scratched her neck.Owe us. The fog thickened, swallowing the last flicker of resistance, the last echo of the fiercely independent girl she’d been weeks ago. Her feet, heavy and slow, moved forward.Towards the open door. Towards the waiting dark.
