Chapter 5: Resolution
The Slithering Whispers of Shame
A dense fog cloaked Basic Training Camp, casting a murky veil over its desolate landscape. Addie stood outside the cramped barrack room, her heart beating a frantic tattoo in her chest, hands trembling beneath the rigid fabric of her uniform gloves. Her short, mussed brown hair obscured her eyes, veiling the torrent of emotions boiling inside her.
"Are you alright, Addie?" inquired Sarah, her voice heavy with concern.
Sarah—a lanky, red-haired fellow trainee of Addie's—crossed her arms as she stepped closer, scrutinizing Addie's pallid complexion.
addie said, her voice barely audible, as she searched the vicinity for any sign of the offensive Drill Sergeant.
"But that sorry son of a bitch deserved to be reported!" interjected Martha angrily. Martha—a staunch, broad-shouldered woman with a severe expression—clenched her fists, her knuckles cracking under the strain.
"We're with you, Addie," she insisted, fixing her grey eyes on Addie's troubled expression. "He can't just get away with this."
Addie averted her gaze, her cheeks flaring as she admitted, "I can't do it. I'm scared."
Sarah glanced over her shoulder before whispering, "If he finds out that we're aiding you in reporting him, none of us will be safe. He's dangerous."
Martha shrugged her off, her resolve steadfast.
"No one else needs to know, Addie. You can trust us."
Addie hesitated, contemplating the potential consequences of their actions. Yet, the glow of courage ignited within her, fueled by the camaraderie shared among her fellow trainees.
"Okay, I trust you. How do we report him?" She inquired shakily, fingertips running through the damp tangles of her hair.
Sarah eyed her grinning, her confidence bolstered by Addie's decision.
Glancing around to ensure the coast was clear, she hissed an obscene phrase before leading them towards the Commanding Officer's office.
Sarah rapped twice on the door before entering with the others trailing close behind. They approached a stern looking Captain, who glanced up from a stack of papers as they stepped forward. Glancing over the women before him, he smirked an amused smile before uttering a string of vulgar remarks.
"Well," he began, "Look what we've got here. Three women from Basic Training looking to rat out their Drill Sergeant.
Their plan was a tricky one, but they knew they had to do something. They approached the Captain's office, each of them rehearsing their story as they went.
"Captain," Sarah began, her voice shaking slightly, "we need to talk to you about our Drill Sergeant."
The Captain looked up from his desk, studied them for a moment, and then motioned for them to take a seat. He leaned back in his chair, crossed his arms, and waited expectantly.
Martha took the lead, her eyes blazing with anger.
"Our Drill Sergeant has been sexually harassing Addie. It's been going on for weeks now, and we can't take it anymore."
The Captain leaned forward, narrowing his eyes. "And what makes you think I believe you? I've seen enough false claims in my time. You better have some solid evidence to back up this claim of yours."
Addie spoke up, heart pounding in her chest. "I have text messages, Captain. I didn't want to believe it at first, but he kept pushing for more.
His hands roamed my body without my consent. I was frozen in fear, unable to move or push him away. He was my superior, after all. I was afraid of the consequences that would follow if I refused his advances.
My phone buzzed in my pocket, breaking the tension in the room. I pulled it out and saw a message from Tim. It was a silly meme that he thought would make me laugh. It was just what I needed to put things into perspective.
"That's enough," I said, pushing the Captain away with all my strength.
I knew the evidence wasn't enough, but I couldn't bear to continue playing this game.
The Captain eyed me skeptically before standing up. "Fine. I'll look into it. But I warn you, if you're lying, there will be consequences."
I nodded, tears brimming in my eyes. "I'm not lying. I swear it."
The Captain dismissed us with a wave of his hand before sitting back down and staring at his computer screen. We walked out of the office, feeling a mix of relief and anxiety.
The Captain had promised to investigate, but we knew we still had a long road ahead. As we made our way back to the barracks, Sarah's hand grabbed hold of mine. "We did it, Addie." she said with a small smile.
Her attempt at comfort was appreciated, and I managed a weak smile in return. My mind was still racing with the events that had just transpired, and my body was still shaking with adrenaline. We paired up and headed towards our rooms, each of us looking towards the sky, hoping for a cancellation of our training duties.
The girls got back to the barracks and Addie sat down, her two friends sat on either side of her, rubbing her arms.
She needed to relax, to calm down, but she was finding it hard to breathe normally. She couldn't shake the feeling of guilt and shame that had overtaken her after what had happened in that dark room.
"Addie, you didn't do anything wrong," Sarah said firmly, reading her mind.
Addie closed her eyes as a tear slid down her cheek. She wanted to believe it, she really did, but she couldn't escape the haunting images of what had happened between her and the Sergeant.
Martha wiped the tear from Addie’s cheek , her thumb lingering there for a moment before she spoke.
"It's okay to feel guilty, Addie. But you have to remember, he took advantage of you. You didn't do anything wrong."
Addie looked up at her friend, the words both comforting and upsetting. She wanted to believe it was all the Sergeant’s fault, but she couldn't help feeling tainted by the experience.
Sarah leaned in closer, her voice barely above a whisper as she spoke, "We need to get your mind off of this.
I have an idea."
Addie looked at her quizzically, unsure of what Sarah had in mind. Martha smirked, giving a small nod as if she already knew what Sarah's plan was.
"What's your plan?" Addie asked, some of the tension leaving her body.
Sarah bit her lower lip, her eyes darting around the room before settling back on Addie's face.
"Well, you know that private room we found in the back of the barracks?
It's dark, secluded, and empty. I think it’s a perfect place for a training session of our own, without that asshole, the Drill Sergeant, making us uncomfortable or holding us back." Sarah said with a devilish smile.
Addie couldn't help but feel her body respond to the proposition. "Are you sure we should? We don't know who else might use that room," Addie asked, trying to calm down her racing heart.
"Don't worry, I've already checked the schedule. No one is signed up for it tonight.
It's just us," Sarah persisted, her voice low and seductive. Addie could feel herself being drawn into Sarah's irresistible charm, despite the apprehension that still lingered in her chest.
"Sarah, I don't know..." Addie hesitated, but the devilish grin on Sarah's face was impossible to resist.
"Come on, Addie, don't be shy.
We need to get our minds off of that disgusting bastard," Sarah urged, with a smirk.
Addie hesitated, torn between the relief of shared solidarity and the hesitation brought forth by the situation.
"Trust me, you won't regret it," Martha chimed in, her eyes glinting with a secret knowledge that appeared to invigorate Addie further.
"Alright, I'm in," Addie finally relented, her voice barely above a whisper, her heart racing in her chest.
The girls exchanged a knowing grin, before leading her to the hidden room. The door creaked open, revealing a dimly lit space, the air thick with tension and anticipation. The room was empty, save for a few cots pushed against the walls, a musty scent permeating the air. It was clear that this room had not been used in quite some time.
Without a word, Sarah closed the door, sealing them away from the prying eyes of their fellow trainees.
She turned to face Addie, her expression soft yet full of want. In a gentle voice, she said, "Addie, you've been through so much already. We just want to make you feel good."
Martha moved behind Addie, wrapping her arms around her shoulders as she whispered in her ear, "We'll take care of you. You're safe with us."
As Sarah drew closer to Addie, Martha continued to pepper her neck and shoulders with kisses. Addie closed her eyes, surrendering to the sensations that were starting to overwhelm her.
