Chapter 3: The Sister's Discovery
The last of the evening sun bled orange through Lily’s blinds, striping the familiar clutter of her room. She was sprawled on her stomach on the bed, wincing as she thumbed through a textbook. The deep ache had settled into a manageable stiffness, a persistent echo that made her constantly aware of her own body. Megan’s knowing glance from the pool felt like a lifetime ago. The secret, now shared, had created a peculiar bubble of normalcy around her. She almost felt… peaceful.
Then came the footsteps on the stairs—too light to be her dad, too brisk to be her mom. A familiar, entitled rhythm.
Her bedroom door swung open without a knock. Chloe stood there, backlit by the hallway light, her dance bag slung over one shoulder. Her hair was swept up in a messy, sweaty bun, a few blond strands plastered to her neck. “Hey. I’m borrowing that gray V-neck. The soft one. Mine’s all gross.”
Lily groaned into her textbook. “Get your own clothes.”
“Yours are better. And you never wear that one.” Chloe was already at the dresser, yanking drawers open with the casual authority of an older sister. She rifled through folded stacks, muttered in frustration, then turned toward the bed. “Is it in your… oh.”
She froze. Her eyes, the same hazel as Lily’s, locked onto the objects laying half-tucked under the rumpled comforter: the wooden ruler, its edge catching the low light, and the hairbrush, its bristles facing down like it was sleeping.
Chloe’s gaze traveled from the implements to Lily, who had gone very still, to the bed again. A slow, dawning comprehension spread across her face. It wasn’t judgment. It was a detective connecting irrefutable evidence.
“Lily,” she said, her voice dropping all its performative annoyance. “What are these doing on your bed?”
“Nothing. Craft project.” The lie was feeble, transparent.
Chloe stepped closer. She didn’t touch them. She just looked. Her eyes flicked to Lily’s posture—flat on her stomach, a textbook propped awkwardly. “You’ve been moving weird all night. Mom asked if you pulled your back from gardening.” A sharp, incredulous laugh escaped her. “A craft project. Right.” She picked up the hairbrush, weighing it in her hand. It was the same one from the vanity. “Since when do you craft with Mom’s good brush? And a ruler?” She looked directly at Lily. “Megan was over today. You two have some weird, secret TikTok thing going on? Are you filming a… a DIY thing?”
Lily felt the heat rise from her chest to her face. This was different from telling Megan. Megan was a choice. This was an invasion. “It’s not for TikTok.”
“Then what?” Chloe’s curiosity was now a tangible force in the room. She put the brush down and picked up the ruler, flexing the thin wood slightly. “Lily. Seriously. What is this?”
The silence stretched. Lily could hear the refrigerator hum downstairs. She could feel the ghost of every stroke from the afternoon, a phantom map under her skin. Confessing to Megan had been a release. This felt like being stripped bare.
“It’s… it’s mine,” Lily finally said, her voice small. “I was using them.”
“Using them for what?”
“To… spank myself.” The words hung in the air, crude and undeniable.
Chloe didn’t laugh. She blinked, processing. She placed the ruler back on the comforter with a soft, precise click. “You’re kidding.” She studied her sister’s face. “You’re not kidding. Why? How? Did it… hurt?”
The barrage of questions was overwhelming. “Yes, it hurt. That’s the point, I think.”
“You think?” Chloe sat on the edge of the bed, the mattress dipping. Her dancer’s posture was unnervingly straight. “So you just, what? Whacked yourself with a ruler for fun? That’s the new hobby? Replacing skincare with… this?”
“It’s not like that,” Lily mumbled, burying her face in her arms. The explanation was impossible. How could she describe the curious alchemy of pain and focus, the silence inside the sting, the profound and unsettling aftermath?
Chloe was quiet for a long moment. “Show me,” she said, her tone shifting from interrogative to something softer, intensely curious.
Lily lifted her head. “What?”
“Show me what you did. I want to see.”
“No. Absolutely not.”
“Why? You did it yourself. It’s just me.” Chloe’s nosiness had morphed into a focused, determined energy. “Come on. I won’t tell. I promise. I just… I don’t get it. I want to understand.”
The thought was terrifying. Letting Chloe see? Letting her watch? It was one thing to confess, another to perform. But under the terror was a treacherous thread of something else. The shared secret with Megan had lessened the loneliness. Maybe showing Chloe would demystify it, would make it less strange, even to herself.
And Chloe, for all her annoying traits, could keep a secret. She’d never told about the vodka in the water bottle junior year, or about Lily’s panic attack before the PSATs.
“You can’t laugh,” Lily said, her voice barely audible.
“I’m not laughing,” Chloe said, and she wasn’t. Her expression was one of pure, unwavering focus.
Lily took a shaky breath. She pushed her textbook aside and slowly, awkwardly, shifted onto her knees at the side of the bed. The well-worn routine from the afternoon felt alien now with an audience. She reached for the ruler, but Chloe’s hand intercepted hers.
“Wait.”
Lily froze. Chloe’s fingers were warm.
“If you’re going to show me,” Chloe said, her voice low and practical, “let me help. Doing it to yourself looks awkward. And you’re not really… committing.”
The world tilted. “What do you mean, help?”
“I’ll do it. Properly.” Chloe’s eyes were bright with the idea. “You wanted to see what it felt like, right? You can’t really get a good angle on yourself. I can.”
The proposition was so far beyond anything Lily had imagined. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drum. This wasn’t solitary exploration anymore. This was collaboration. This was handing over control.
“You don’t know how,” Lily whispered.
“So tell me.” Chloe picked up the hairbrush. “Start with this? Or your hand? How many? Tell me what you did before.”
The clinical instruction broke through the panic. It became a bizarre, intimate protocol. “Hand first. Then the brush. I did… a lot. Until it felt like enough.”
Chloe nodded, as if receiving dance choreography. “Okay. Assume the position, I guess.” She attempted a light tone, but it fell flat. The room was too charged.
Lily bent over the edge of the bed, clutching the comforter. The posture was familiar, but the exposure was magnified a thousandfold. She heard Chloe move behind her, felt the air shift. The first touch wasn’t a strike. It was Chloe’s hand, flat and assessing, resting on the seat of her soft pajama shorts.
“Here?”
Lily just nodded, her face burning into the fabric.
The first smack was tentative, a testing tap. It was nothing.
“Harder,” Lily heard herself say, the word muffled.
The second one had purpose. A crisp, sharp crack that echoed in the quiet room. Lily gasped. It was the same sensation, but utterly different. The surprise of it, the lack of control over its timing, sent a jolt through her system that was purely adrenaline.
Chloe found a rhythm. Methodical, firm, each smack layering heat onto the lingering warmth from the afternoon. Lily clenched her fists in the comforter, her breath coming in short hitches. It hurt, deeply. But woven into the pain was a sharp, startling thread of relief. The decision was gone. She just had to endure.
“Okay?” Chloe’s voice was a little breathless.
“Yeah. Switch.”
The hand withdrew. There was a moment of suspended silence, then the cool, smooth back of the hairbrush pressed against her. The threat of it was a cold line.
The first brushstroke was a revelation. It wasn’t a smack; it was a precise, concentrated blow that bit deep into the muscle. Lily cried out, her body jerking forward.
“Too much?”
“No. Keep going.” The words were gritted out.
Chloe continued, slower now, measuring each impact. The room filled with the stark, wooden sound of discipline and Lily’s stifled sounds. Tears pricked her eyes, born from sheer intensity, not sadness. Her world narrowed to the searing grid on her skin and the sound of her sister’s controlled breathing behind her.
When it stopped, it wasn’t because Chloe had asked. It was because Lily, unconsciously, had reached a hand back, a weak, stopping gesture.
Chloe immediately lowered the brush. The sudden absence of noise was louder than the spanking had been.
Lily lay over the bed, trembling, swimming in a sea of fire. She heard Chloe place the brush carefully on the dresser.
For a full minute, neither spoke. The only sound was Lily’s ragged breathing slowly softening.
“So,” Chloe finally said, her voice oddly gentle. “That’s what it feels like.”
Lily could only manage a weak nod against the bed.
Chloe sat beside her, not touching. “You’re red as a sunset. Really committed to the craft project, huh?” The old teasing tone was there, but it was softened, almost affectionate.
Lily pushed herself up, moving gingerly. The pain was bright, overwhelming, a supernova compared to the dull ache of before. She looked at her sister. Chloe’s face was flushed, her eyes wide with a mixture of alarm and a strange, satisfied curiosity.
“Thanks,” Lily whispered, the word absurd but necessary.
“Don’t thank me. It’s seriously weird.” Chloe stood up, brushing nonexistent lint from her leggings. The practical big-sister mantle was settling back over her, but it didn’t quite fit the same way. “I’m still borrowing that shirt.”
She found it in the bottom drawer, pulled it on over her tank top, and headed for the door. She paused, her hand on the knob, and looked back. The implements lay on the bed, innocent and guilty all at once.
“Next time you decide to explore ancient torture methods,” Chloe said, her voice dry but her eyes serious, “maybe just ask me. You looked like you were fighting a losing war with yourself.”
She left, closing the door softly behind her.
Lily slowly lowered herself back onto her stomach, the fresh fire mingling with the old embers. The room was empty again, but it didn’t feel solitary. It felt witnessed. The secret was now woven between three people, a strange, new pattern she didn’t understand.
She listened to Chloe’s footsteps descend the stairs, a normal sound in their normal house. Everything outside this room was normal. Inside, everything had changed again. The pain was no longer just a feeling. It was a conversation. And she had no idea what to say next.
The silence in her room was a physical thing now, thick and humming. The pain Chloe had left behind wasn’t like the earlier, self-inflicted ache. This was sharper, more authoritative, a live wire under her skin. It demanded all her attention. She pushed herself up, moving with a stiff, careful deliberation toward her closet door where a long mirror was tacked.
She turned, craning her neck over her shoulder.
The sight was a shock. Vivid, overlapping crimson stripes bloomed across her skin, a stark map of the last hour. It was more intense than after her own session. More real. A thin, slick heat pulsed between her legs, insistent and distracting. It was a separate, confusing warmth entirely, coiling low in her stomach, entirely apart from the punishing fire on her skin.
She couldn’t ignore it.
Her fingers, trembling slightly, slipped beneath the waistband of her shorts. She kept her eyes locked on the reflection, on the brutalized skin. She touched herself, a slow, circular pressure. A sharp gasp escaped her, mingling relief and shame. The sensation was overwhelming, a direct and urgent counterpoint to the throbbing pain. She rubbed, her breathing growing shallow, watching the reddened flesh in the mirror as she worked herself toward a quick, tense release.
It crashed over her, waves of tension dissolving into a loose, buzzing stillness. Her forehead dropped against the cool mirror with a soft thud.
For a few seconds, there was only the sound of her own breath fogging the glass. Then, from downstairs, the distinct sound of the garage door rumbling open. The heavy, mechanical groan sliced through the strange quiet of the house.
Her mother was home.
