Chapter 7: The Proof
Darla stared.
The words hung in the slate-and-walnut space, vibrating with a meaning her mind couldn’t immediately grasp. I’m a woman. They weren’t a lie. They weren’t a joke. They were a seismic shift, the ground beneath her reality cracking open. Her eyes, wide and searching, scanned Alex’s face—the strong jaw, the dusting of freckles, the beautiful hazel eyes now swimming with a terror so profound it stole Darla’s breath. She saw no deception. Only a raw, trembling vulnerability that was more intimate than any kiss.
Alexis—Alexis—took a half-step back, creating a canyon of air between them. Her voice, that deep, comforting rumble, was frayed at the edges. “My actual name is Alexis but everyone calls me Alex and I guess people just started assuming I was a man.” The words tumbled out in a rush, a confession kept under pressure for too long. “I know this is a lot and you’re not even into girls so I understand if you need space.”
The retreat. The assumption. It was the final catalyst.
Darla’s hand snapped out, her fingers closing around Alexis’s wrist. The skin was warm, the pulse beneath hammering a wild rhythm. She pulled, not gently, closing the distance Alexis had created until their bodies were aligned again, heat bleeding through fabric. The smirk that touched Darla’s lips wasn’t cruel. It was molten, knowing, a curve of pure challenge. She leaned in, her lips a breath away from the column of Alexis’s neck, where her pulse jumped.
“Prove it.” The whisper was smoke and velvet, sending an unmistakable shiver down Alexis’s spine. “You should know by now that I’m a…visual learner.”
A heartbeat of suspended silence. Then Alexis’s control shattered.
She didn’t need a second invitation. Her mouth found Darla’s with a desperate, grateful hunger, kissing her deeply, swallowing her gasp. One hand cradled the back of Darla’s head, careful of the bruise, while the other slid down the emerald silk of her dress, mapping the curve of her hip, the swell of her ass, pulling her closer until not a sliver of night air could separate them.
The kiss was an argument, a conversation, a revelation. It was Alexis saying this is who I am and Darla answering I see you. Darla’s hands, which had moments ago been frozen, came to life. They pushed the unbuttoned dress shirt from Alexis’s shoulders, letting it fall in a whisper of linen to the floor. Her palms slid up the defined planes of Alexis’s back, feeling the powerful muscles shift, the smooth skin, the delicate ridge of her spine.
Her fingers found the edge of it first—a band of stiff, compression fabric encircling Alexis’s ribs. The binder. Darla’s breath hitched. She felt Alexis stiffen, the kiss faltering for a fragment of a second.
“Show me,” Darla murmured against her mouth, her voice low and sure. Her hands slid around to Alexis’s front, her fingers exploring the unfamiliar fastening at the side. It was clinical, a clasp. Under her touch, Alexis trembled.
With shaking hands, Alexis covered Darla’s, guiding her. A click, soft as a sigh. The tension in the garment released. Alexis drew a sharp, deep breath, the first full one she’d likely taken in hours. Darla helped her pull it away, letting the binder join the shirt on the cool slate floor.
The living room light was kind, painting everything in bronze and shadow. Darla looked. Her gaze was not clinical, not curious in a detached way. It was devout.
Alexis’s chest was lean, defined by the same athletic grace as the rest of her. Small, perfect breasts, their peaks already taut in the cool air. Freckles dusted her skin like scattered cinnamon. Darla’s hands rose, hovering for a moment before making contact. Her palms were warm as she cupped Alexis, her thumbs brushing over the sensitive nipples. Alexis gasped, her head falling back, her dreadlocks brushing her shoulders.
“You’re beautiful,” Darla whispered, the words not empty praise but a stunned, tactile truth.
She leaned in and captured Alexis’s mouth again, kissing her with a slow, deep possession that melted the last remnants of fear. Her hands continued their exploration, learning the new geography—the softness here, the firm muscle there, the rapid, rabbit-fast heartbeat beneath it all.
They moved without breaking the kiss, a slow, tangled migration from the foyer into the living room. The back of Darla’s knees hit the edge of the black leather couch. She let herself fall back, pulling Alexis down on top of her. The cold, smooth leather was a shock against her skin, a contrast to the heat of the body covering hers.
Alexis braced herself on her forearms, looking down at Darla. Her hazel eyes were dark, the green almost swallowed by black. “Are you sure?” The question was ragged, torn from a place of old scars.
In answer, Darla reached for the zipper at the side of her own dress. The sound was loud in the quiet room. She wriggled, helping Alexis peel the silk away, letting it pool on the floor like spilled jade. She lay there in just her lace underwear, the bruises on her face and the determination in her eyes making a stark, powerful painting.
“I’ve never been more sure of anything,” Darla said, her voice clear. She arched up, finding Alexis’s mouth again. “Show me everything.”
And Alexis did.
And Alexis did.
Her lips left a trail of soft, warm kisses from Darla’s mouth, over the tender bruise on her cheek, down the elegant slope of her neck. Each kiss was a silent apology for the violence Darla had endured, a fervent promise of a different kind of possession. Darla’s head fell back, a low hum vibrating in her throat as Alexis’s mouth finally hovered, breath hot, over the peaks of her full breasts.
She took a nipple into her mouth greedily, her tongue swirling around the taut flesh while her left hand found its way under the rumpled silk of Darla’s dress. Her fingers slid over the curve of a hip, the smooth plane of a thigh, and found nothing but warm, damp skin. She wasn’t wearing any panties. The discovery ignited a hunger in Alexis so sharp and deep it felt like vertigo.
“You are so fucking sexy,” Alexis gasped against Darla’s breast, her voice shattered with want.
She continued her descent, her mouth charting a course down the fabric covering Darla’s stomach, following the path of her own trembling hand. The scent of Darla’s arousal, rich and elemental, filled the air. Then she was there, face to face with her prize between Darla’s legs. Alexis’s mouth watered instantly, a primal response that made her knees weak against the leather couch.
But she made herself pause, her breath ghosting over Darla’s wetness. The warmth of it made Darla arch her back off the cushions, a broken sound escaping her. Alexis clutched at control, at the need to be careful. This was Darla’s first time with a woman, she assumed.
“Let me know if this is too much,” Alexis breathed, the words shaky. “I promise to be gentle.”
Darla’s hand snaked down, fingers tangling in Alexis’s dreadlocks not to push her away, but to hold her there. Her other hand grabbed Alexis firmly by the chin, forcing her gaze up. Darla’s eyes were black pools of pure challenge, her split lip making her smile look dangerous and new.
“Don’t you dare,” Darla said, her voice a rough command. “This isn’t my first rodeo.” She tightened her grip, a possessiveness in her touch that made Alexis shudder. “Don’t come up until you’re drowning.”
A wicked, relieved grin spread across Alexis’s face, erasing the last shadow of hesitation. “Good.” She dipped her head, her words a final rumble against Darla’s skin. “I been starving since you walked into my office.”
The first touch of her tongue was not gentle. It was a claiming. Darla cried out, her hips lifting off the couch, her fingers clenching in Alexis’s hair. Alexis drank her in, learning her landscape, finding a rhythm that made Darla’s thighs tremble and her whispers dissolve into shattered, pleading syllables. The taste of her was complex—salt, sweetness, power. It was the antidote to the copper blood from Marcus’s blow, a flavor that washed everything else away.
Darla’s commands became gasped encouragement, then wordless sounds. The leather sighed beneath them. Alexis lost herself in the giving, in the feeling of Darla coming completely apart under the focus of her mouth. Her own need was a distant, throbbing echo, secondary to this.
When Darla finally broke, it was with a sharp, surprised cry that seemed to startle even her. Her body arched, stiffened, then melted into a boneless series of tremors. Alexis rode it out, gentling her touch until Darla’s hand fell away from her hair, slack.
Slowly, Alexis lifted herself. She crawled up Darla’s body, tasting herself on Darla’s tongue when they kissed again, deep and languid. Darla’s hands were everywhere now, clumsy with aftermath, pushing at the waistband of Alexis’s tuxedo pants.
“My turn,” Darla murmured, her voice wrecked. “I need to feel you.”
The pants and briefs were shoved down in an impatient tangle. Darla’s exploration was less reverent now, more urgently curious. Her touch was firm, sure, mapping the wet heat between Alexis’s thighs, learning what made her gasp, what made her hips stutter. Alexis, who had built a fortress of control, shattered quietly. Her release was a silent, seismic thing, her face buried in Darla’s neck, her body trembling with a vulnerability that felt more exposing than being naked.
They lay tangled in the silent, shadowed room for a long time, the only sound their slowing breaths. The stack of data reports on the coffee table, the unopened book of poetry, were artifacts from another world. Darla traced the freckles on Alexis’s shoulder.
“So,” Darla said finally, her voice soft but clear in the dark. “Alexis.”
“Alex is still fine,” Alexis murmured into her skin. “Or Lex. Whichever.”
“Lex,” Darla tested the word. It fit. “Everyone at work really has no idea?”
“They see the suit. They hear the voice. They make an assumption.” Alexis shrugged, a movement Darla felt against her own body. “It’s easier. The work speaks for itself.”
“It does,” Darla agreed. Her fingers stilled. “You know this is going to be a complication.”
“I know.”
“Marcus is going to be a problem.”
“I know that, too.”
Darla turned her head, looking at the sharp, beautiful profile beside her. The green in her eyes was just a faint glint in the low light. “I’m not leaving here tonight to go back to him.”
Alexis turned her head then, their noses almost touching. The fear was gone from her eyes, replaced by a cautious, blazing hope. “You can stay as long as you want.”
Outside, the first faint grey light of dawn began to bleed into the sky over the city. The bruises on Darla’s face would darken. The world with its assumptions and complications would come knocking. But here, on the smooth black leather, with the taste of each other still on their tongues, they had built a temporary, perfect fortress of truth.
Darla’s stomach growled, a loud, prosaic sound in the quiet.
A laugh bubbled out of Alexis, genuine and free. “I’ve got eggs,” she said.
“Perfect,” Darla said, and for the first time since the award ceremony, since the slap, since everything, she believed it could be.
