Chapter 1: Introduction

The leaves crunched under Evelyn's boots as she held Mark's hand, leading him deeper into the orchard. She could feel the crisp autumn air nipping at her cheeks, and she relished the sensation. The scent of apples hung heavy in the air, a sweet and tangy aroma that made her mouth water. The sun was a warm blanket on her shoulders, filtering through the canopy of trees above, casting dappled light on the ground.

"I can't believe we're finally here," she exclaimed, her green eyes sparkling with excitement.

"This place is even more beautiful than it looked in the pictures."

Mark chuckled, his gaze sweeping across the rows of trees heavy with fruit. "You say that about every place we go," he teased. "But I have to admit, this is a pretty nice spot."

Evelyn playfully smacked his arm. "Well, I'm a fan of nature, what can I say? And look at all these apples! I can already taste the pie."

Mark smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Now you're talking.

I'm more of a crumble man myself, but I'll take whatever you're baking," Mark said, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. He was always the practical one, Evelyn thought, but even he couldn't resist the charm of a sunny day in an apple orchard.

As they walked, Evelyn's hair, a cascade of wavy red locks, caught the sunlight, shimmering like a flame. She laughed at something he said, her freckles dancing across her nose. Mark's eyes lingered on her, his stoic demeanor softening.

It was moments like these that he loved most, when Evelyn's playful spirit was on full display. He may not always understand her whimsical side, but he wouldn't have her any other way.

Evelyn tugged him towards an old wooden cart filled with baskets. "Come on, let's get started. I want to fill at least two baskets before we head back," she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm.

Mark raised an eyebrow. "Two baskets? Evelyn, we're only two people.

That's a lot of apples," Mark said, laughing at her eagerness.

"Well, we'll just have to work fast then, won't we?" Evelyn replied, already grabbing a basket and handing one to Mark.

"Alright, you're the boss," Mark said, shaking his head with a smile. He followed her as she headed towards a tree laden with ripe, crimson apples.

Evelyn reached up, her fingers brushing against the apple's smooth skin. She plucked one off and held it up, inspecting it closely.

"You know, I've never really thought about how apples grow," she mused, her eyes scanning the tree. "It's fascinating how they just... appear on branches like that."

Mark stepped closer, examining the apple in her hand. "Well, they don't just appear," he said, a hint of his architect's precision coming through. "It takes a lot of work from the tree. Sunlight, water, nutrients from the soil—it's all part of the process."

Evelyn grinned, her playful side surfacing again.

"Well, Mr. Architect, why don't you teach me all about the intricate process of apple growth?" She took a bite of the apple, the sweet juice exploding in her mouth.

Mark chuckled, leaning against the tree trunk. "Alright, well, first, let's talk about the flowers. Apple trees bloom in the spring, and those flowers need to be pollinated by bees. Without that, no fruit."

Evelyn nodded, chewing slowly, her eyes following a bee as it buzzed from flower to flower. "That's amazing," she said, her voice tinged with sarcasm. “Are you explaining the birds and the bees to me” she playfully laughed.

Mark looked at her, a slight blush on his cheeks. “What can I say, I’m good at explaining things,” he said, a smirk playing on his lips.

Evelyn laughed again, the sound carrying through the orchard. She reached up and grabbed another apple, this one higher up on the branch.

“Well, Mr. Architect, let’s see if you can teach me more as we pick these beauties,” she said, handing the apple to Mark.

He took a bite, juice dripping down his chin. Evelyn reached up and wiped it away with her thumb, leaving a smear of apple juice behind.
