Chapter 7: Gloria's Last Stand
The music had shifted. It was slower now, a deep, subsonic thrum that seemed to emanate from the pool lights themselves, vibrating in the water and in the bone. The disco-ball phallus cast fractured, shimmering diamonds of light over the scene, a ceaseless, mocking snowfall over the heaving flesh. Chad sat like a king on his submerged bench, a throne of tile and human devotion. Stacy’s mouth was a warm, diligent sheath around him, her technique evolved from desperate service to meditative worship. Around him, the others floated, clung, explored. Maya and Kelsey were past the point of observation. Maya’s hands were now permanently affixed to her own chest, which had swollen to a ripe, heavy D-cup in what felt like minutes, the skin stretched shiny and hot, her nipples dark and protruding like thumbtips. She kept comparing them to Marcy’s, a constant, soft murmur of “not as big, not yet, but getting there.”
Kelsey and Leah were entangled in a wet knot of empirical frenzy. Leah, her mind now fully rewired to interpret everything through the lens of the experiment, was cataloging Kelsey’s changes. “Subcutaneous adipose redistribution is immediate,” she breathed into Kelsey’s ear, one hand kneading the soft swell of Kelsey’s newly generous hip, the other scribbling imaginary notes on the girl’s damp shoulder. “Muscle tone is decreasing, but ligament and joint laxity is increasing phenomenally. The hip socket… it’s remodeling in real time. Do you feel that? A deep, warm popping?”
“I feel everything,” Kelsey moaned, her head thrown back, her own hands roaming over Leah’s back, feeling the intelligent, wiry muscles soften into pliable, lush curves. “It doesn’t hurt. It just… opens.”
Tasha was mostly silent, wrapped around Marcy from behind like a life preserver on a planet of gelatin. She had given up on words. Her communication was nuzzling, biting softly at the thick column of Marcy’s neck, her hands perpetually cupping and weighing the unbelievable fullness of Marcy’s breasts from behind, as if trying to memorize their impossible density and drape.
Chad watched it all through half-lidded eyes. The pleasure was constant, a low-grade current fed by their touch, their awe, their very deformation. But beneath it, a restless hunger gnawed. Stacy’s mouth was skilled, but it was maintenance. He needed conquest. He needed fresh resistance breaking. He needed to see the light of defiance gutter and be replaced by this blank, hungry adoration.
As if summoned by his thought, a sharp voice cut through the bass and the moans.
“What in the actual hell is wrong with all of you?”
They all turned, movements sluggish in the water. Gloria stood at the wrought-iron gate, which she’d pushed open. She hadn’t entered. She was a silhouette against the sickly orange glow of the streetlights, arms crossed over a modest, tucked-in blouse. Her dark curls were pulled into a practical ponytail. She held a casserole dish—some neighborly pretense—like a shield.
“Gloria,” Marcy sighed, the sound a lazy ripple of condescension. “You’re missing the party.”
“This isn’t a party,” Gloria spat. Her eyes swept the pool. She saw Maya, her blouse open, obsessed with her own new breasts. She saw Leah, the sensible paralegal, naked and cooing scientific jargon while groping another woman. She saw Stacy’s head bobbing in Chad’s lap. Her jaw tightened. “This is a mass delusion. A public health crisis. Look at yourselves! You’re… you’re mutating!”
“Evolving,” Chad corrected, his voice calm, a deep vibration that carried over the water. He didn’t move Stacy away. He let her continue, a living demonstration. “You’re using the language of fear, Gloria. The old language.”
“I’m using the language of sanity!” she shouted. Her voice cracked. She was scared. She’d heard the rumors, seen the darkened windows on her street, the strange, jiggling shadows behind curtains. But seeing it, smelling it—the thick, sweet-musky scent of sex and chlorine and something else, something chemical—it made her stomach clench. “I’ve called the police. They’re on their way. This ends now.”
A flicker of something other than pleasure crossed Chad’s face. Annoyance. A crack in the sovereignty. He placed a hand on Stacy’s head, stilling her. “You called them?”
“Damn right I did. You think you can just… chemically assault an entire neighborhood? Turn women into… into this?” She gestured wildly at Marcy, whose sheer physicality now seemed to defy not just fashion but physics.
“I think,” Chad said slowly, pushing Stacy gently aside and standing up, water streaming down the carved geometry of his abdomen, “that you’ve made a mistake.”
He waded towards the steps. The water level sank with each step, revealing more of him. The sheer scale of him, even before the second dose, was enough to make Gloria take an unconscious step back. He wasn’t just a big man. He was a density. A wall of purpose.
He stopped at the pool’s edge, not getting out, his lower half still submerged. “The police won’t help you. What will you tell them? That your neighbors are too beautiful? Too happy? That they’ve chosen a different shape?”
“They’ve been poisoned!” Gloria’s defiance was fierce, but her eyes were locked on his chest, on the way his pectorals moved like separate animals under his skin.
Before he could answer, the smooth purr of an expensive engine cut through the night. Headlights swept across the backyard, painting the swaying palms and lurid loungers in stark, clinical white. A sleek black sedan, silent as a shark, rolled to a stop just behind Gloria.
The passenger door opened.
A leg emerged, sheathed in seamless, dark nylon, ending in a sharp, expensive heel. Then another. The woman who unfolded herself from the low-slung vehicle was a monument of controlled, terrifying amplitude. Dr. Veronica Sharpe stood to her full height, smoothing her lab coat over a figure that made Marcy’s look like a preliminary sketch. Her hips were a profound, sweeping architecture that made the tailored coat flare dramatically. Her breasts were not simply large; they were geologic, two immense, heavy orbs that strained the white fabric into a landscape of desperate seams and shadows, their weight palpable in the very set of her shoulders. Her hair was a severe, fiery red bun, scalpel-sharp. Her eyes, behind utilitarian glasses, were the color of a frozen lake.
She held a brushed aluminum briefcase.
“Gloria, I presume,” Dr. Sharpe said, her voice clipped, devoid of warmth. It was a voice used for dictating notes. “Your call to the county sheriff’s department was rerouted to my private security line. Seventeen minutes ago. I own the patent on the 911 routing software for this postal code.”
Gloria stared, the casserole dish slipping in her hands. “Who are you?”
“The architect.” Dr. Sharpe’s gaze slid past her, over her, as if she were a mildly interesting insect, and landed on Chad. Her cold eyes performed a quick, diagnostic scan. “Subject Alpha. Vital signs are elevated. Cortisol levels suggest agitated dominance. The baseline growth has plateaued. You’re ready.”
Chad’s lecherous grin returned, wider now. “Doctor. You brought the upgrade.”
“I brought the necessary catalyst.” She clicked the briefcase open. Inside, nestled in grey foam, lay a single syringe filled with a liquid that glowed with a faint, malevolent amber light, like captured bioluminescence. Next to it was a sealed canister, the size of a thermos, labeled with a simple Ψ symbol.
Gloria found her voice. “You’re behind this? You’re… giving him drugs? I’ll have you arrested! I’ll—”
Dr. Sharpe turned her head a fraction of an inch. “Gloria, 32, single mother, one male child age 8. Moderate financial debt. Low-grade chronic anxiety. Body mass index 24.3. A lifetime of sensible choices leading to a profound, unacknowledged emptiness.” She delivered the data like a weather report. “You are not a threat. You are a potential data point. Now be silent. The adult dosage is being administered.”
The clinical brutality of it stole Gloria’s breath. She watched, paralyzed, as Dr. Sharpe strode forward, her heels clicking on the wet concrete, her own impossible curves moving with a precise, ruthless authority. She didn’t acknowledge the women in the pool. They were variables, already logged.
She stopped before Chad. “Neck. Carotid proximity. The dissemination will be systemic and rapid.” There was no bedside manner. It was a technical instruction.
Chad tilted his head, exposing the thick, corded column of his neck. The muscle there pulsed.Dr. Sharpe didn’t hesitate. She plucked the syringe from the foam, raised it, and with a practitioner’s unerring aim, pressed the needle to his skin and depressed the plunger.
The effect was not instantaneous. It was a wave.
A sharp, hissing intake of breath from Chad. Then a tremor, starting in the injected muscle and radiating outward, a visible shiver that made his skin ripple. The amber fluid vanished into his bloodstream.
For three seconds, nothing.
Then, a deep, subcutaneous groan, a sound of tearing fabric—but it wasn’t fabric. It was the sound of his own connective tissue stretching beyond its design.
Chad threw his head back, his mouth open in a silent roar. His shoulders, already broad, seemed to unlock. The deltoids swelled, pushing outwards, the striations deepening into canyons. The thin material of his swim trunks, already strained, now split at the seams with a sound like gunshots, falling away in wet scraps. His pectorals, massive slabs, thickened, lifting and broadening, the clefts between them becoming deep, shadowed ravines. His entire torso expanded, ribcage broadening, the serratus muscles along his sides popping out in fierce, digitated ridges.
The growth wasn’t graceful. It was violent. Tendons stood out like steel cables under skin that flushed a deep, angry red. Veins, already maps of power, became raised, tributary highways pumping some new, potent fuel. He was growing taller. The water, which had been at his navel, now slid down to his upper thighs. He was pushing past seven feet, towards eight.
His cock, already a daunting weapon, underwent its own terrifying metamorphosis. It lengthened, thick as a forearm now, a heavy, veined pillar of flesh that seemed to weight the very air around it. It wasn’t just size. It was presence, a biological obelisk.
The women in the pool didn’t gasp. They moaned. A collective, hungry sound. The change in his alpha aura was a physical force, a wave of heat and chemical command that washed over them. Maya cried out, her new breasts aching with a sudden, exquisite fullness. Leah stopped her examination, her mind going blank, overridden by a primal need to be closer to the radiating source. Marcy actually shuddered, a cascade of ripples moving through her gelatinous bulk, her eyes glazing over with renewed devotion.
Gloria’s phone, which she’d been clutching in her other hand, clattered to the concrete. She didn’t hear it. She was staring, her mouth dry, her professional, no-nonsense world-view disintegrating. This wasn’t a drug deal. This was a transfiguration. The man was becoming something else. A statue of pulsating, exaggerated male potency coming to life.
Chad looked down at his own hands, turning them over. They were bigger, the knuckles like walnuts. He clenched a fist, and the forearm muscle bulged, a knot of power the size of a grapefruit. A laugh bubbled up from his newly deepened chest, a sound of pure, unadulterated triumph. He felt the night air differently. The pool seemed smaller. The world seemed… within reach.
Dr. Sharpe observed dispassionately, making a note on a tablet she produced from her coat. “Somatic amplification exceeding projections by twelve percent. Psychosexual feedback loop appears multiplicative. Excellent.” She placed the empty syringe back in the case and picked up the sealed canister. She handed it to Chad. His hand, now massive, enveloped it. “The transmissible agent. Concentrated aerosol. One burst will saturate an area of five thousand cubic feet. The hormonal imperative will be irresistible. Compliance will be neurological, not situational.”
Chad understood. This wasn’t just for his backyard. This was for the streets. The houses. The whole sleeping, resistant suburb. He thumbed the release valve on the canister, a simple button.
He turned his new, terrifying gaze on Gloria. Her defiance was a ghost now, a pale memory haunting her eyes. She was backing up, her heels hitting the fallen casserole dish, sending tofu bake across the concrete.
“You called them,” Chad said, his voice a low, tectonic rumble. He took a step out of the pool. Water sheeted off him. He was a giant, glistening and new, each muscle group a separate, swollen continent. His shadow, cast by the phallic disco ball, fell over her, engulfing her completely. “But they’re not coming for me. They’re coming for you. To ask why you’re bothering them. To ask why you’re resisting what’s so obviously… better.”
He took another step. The ground seemed to vibrate.
“Don’t,” Gloria whispered, the word barely audible.
“It’s not a choice anymore,” Chad said. He raised the canister, pointing it not at her, but at the space between them. “It’s a climate.”
He pressed the button.
There was no hiss. A silent, pressurized cloud of shimmering gold particles erupted from the nozzle, finer than dust, heavier than air. It billowed out in a gentle, expanding mushroom, catching the light, beautiful and deadly. It enveloped Gloria.
She tried to hold her breath, turning her head, squeezing her eyes shut. It was futile. The particles were designed for dermal absorption as much as inhalation. They settled on her skin, her lips, her eyelids. They were cool, tingling. A scent, like ozone and overripe peaches, filled her sinuses.
Inside her, the war was short and brutal. The sensible part of her brain, the part that planned meals and balanced checkbooks and worried about her son, screamed a retreat. It was drowned out in seconds by a chemical tsunami. The agent sought the receptors for anxiety, for fear, for social inhibition, and flooded them. It didn’t erase them. It rewired them. The anxiety remained, but its object changed. It was no longer fear of Chad, or of transformation. It became a frantic, clawing anxiety of being left out. Of being the only one not chosen. Of remaining small, sensible, irrelevant.
Her body responded before her mind could articulate the change. A deep, unlocking warmth spread from her core. It felt like sinking into a hot bath after a lifetime of chill. Her hands, which had been clenched into fists, went limp. She took a ragged, involuntary breath, drawing the agent deep into her lungs.
Her eyes opened. They were no longer sharp with defiance. They were wide, dilated, swimming with a new and terrifying need. She looked at Chad, not as a monster, but as the only source of relief for the aching emptiness the doctor had named. The emptiness that now felt like a physical void, a hollow space in her belly and chest that demanded to be filled, weighted, claimed.
Her practical blouse felt like a prison. Her sensible slacks were a joke. Her hands went to the buttons of her blouse, fumbling. “It’s… so hot,” she murmured, echoing Tasha’s words from an epoch ago.
“Yes,” Chad said, lowering the canister. He watched, his monumental cock twitching with interest. This was the conquest. Not the breaking of the body, but the silent, total annihilation of the will. The rewriting of a personality in real time.
Gloria got the blouse open, shrugging it off her shoulders. She wore a simple, beige bra. Even as her fingers went to the clasp, the changes began. The soft, womanly curves she’d possessed—the ones she’d always considered “a bit much”—were mere scaffolding. Her breasts began to swell within the cups, not with the gradual softness of the others, but with a sudden, firm inflation, as if being pumped from within. The bra straps dug in, then snapped with soft pings. The cups were pushed down, then utterly defeated, as her breasts surged forward, gaining weight and pendulousness in a matter of heartbeats. They were larger than Maya’s now, larger than Stacy’s, approaching the terrifying, glorious scale of Marcy’s.
A soft, broken cry escaped her lips. Not of pain. Of shocked revelation. Her hands flew to their under-curves, hefting the new, impossible weight. “Oh, god…”
Her hips followed, the bones giving that deep, internal pop Leah had described. Her slacks, already tight, strained and then split at the seams, falling away to reveal simple cotton panties that were instantly rendered obscene, a tiny flag of modesty on a continent of softening, expanding flesh. Her waist, once defined, became a shorter, tighter parenthesis between the sudden, majestic swell of her ribs and the burgeoning shelf of her hips and ass.
She was becoming, in seconds, a parody of maternal abundance, a figure of overwhelming, jiggly fertility. Her curls, freed from the ponytail, tumbled around shoulders that were already rounding, losing their angularity.
Chad took the final step, closing the distance. The heat radiating from his new body was like a forge. He looked down at her, a colossus surveying his most recent acquisition. He didn’t touch her. He let her feel the scale.
“Your son,” he said, the words a dark caress. “He’ll need a new understanding of the world. A bigger world. You’ll teach him. By example.”
The mention of her child didn’t spark rebellion. In her new, chemically-framed mind, it solidified her purpose. She had to secure a place in the new order. For him. For herself. Survival was no longer about resistance. It was about integration. About becoming essential.
The heat was everywhere. It wasn't the heat of the neon or the humid night. It was inside Gloria, a biological fever, a furnace stoked by the shimmering particles dissolving into her skin. Her mind was a radio between stations, static and fleeting bursts of her old self screaming into a void that grew wider, softer, more accepting by the second. The weight of her own new breasts was an anchor, pulling her forward, pulling her down. She looked at her hands, slick with the mist, pressed against the overwhelming swell of flesh that had once been her chest. The sensation was less like growth and more like disclosure, as if her body had always contained this latent, exaggerated blueprint and the agent had simply pressed a developer to it.
Chad stood immobile, a monument waiting for worship. The silence stretched, charged with the wet sounds from the pool and Gloria’s ragged breathing.
“I don’t… understand,” she whispered, but the words were meaningless, a reflex. Her body understood perfectly. Every nerve ending was re-calibrating, reporting back on a new primary directive: proximity to him. The alpha-emissions coming off his transformed body were a physical pressure, a gravitational pull centered on the thick, veined pillar of his cock and the radiating, granite mass of his new musculature. Her defiance had been a shell of keratin and brittle pride. Now it was powder, sloughing away to reveal a desperate, spongy core.
“You don’t have to understand,” Marcy called from the water, her voice a lazy, knowledgeable drawl. She was floating on her back, her mountainous breasts forming islands on the surface, her nipples like dark, pebbled atolls. “Just feel it. It’s easier.”
Gloria took a stumbling step forward. Her new balance was all wrong. Her center of gravity had dropped, settling deep in the swaying, heavy basin of her hips. Each step sent a chaotic, jostling tremor through her upper body, a cascade of momentum that made her breasts swing and collide. The feeling was profoundly alien, yet within three steps, it began to feel inevitable. Correct. The jiggle was a language, and her body was learning to speak it fluently.
She stopped a foot from him. The sheer scale of him, this close, was obliterating. He smelled of chlorine, male sweat, and something else, something metallic and potent – the scent of the agent itself, now sweating from his pores. She had to crane her neck to look up at his face, which was set in an expression of indulgent expectation. His lecherous grin was gone, replaced by a calm, possessive scrutiny that was far more terrifying.
“My kid,” she breathed, the last fragment of her old world clinging on. “What… what do I tell him?”
Chad’s hand, huge enough to cup her entire skull, came up. He didn’t touch her. He let it hover near her cheek, the radiant heat from his palm bathing her face. “You’ll show him strength. You’ll show him what it means to be part of something real. No more lies. No more playing small.”
His voice wasn’t kind. It was factual. It presented a future she could either accept or be crushed by. The chemical compulsion weaving through her synapses fused with the stark truth of his physical dominance. Acceptance wasn’t surrender. It was evolution. The last fragment dissolved.
A low, trembling sound vibrated in her throat. Not a sob. Something darker, needier. Her eyes, wide and pooling with confused want, dropped from his face to his body. They traveled over the landscape of him—the cobbled expanse of his abdomen, the deep central groove leading down—but they didn’t settle there. They rose again, tracing the brutal curve of his pectoral, then the immense, rounded bulk of his right bicep. The muscle was the size of a soccer ball, a hard, vascular planet under skin pulled taut. A single, throbbing vein ran over its peak like a ridge on a topographic map.
It represented power, in its most concentrated, useless form. Pure display. It was the opposite of the practical strength she’d used to lift moving boxes, to carry her sleeping son to bed. This was strength as spectacle, as iconography. And her re-wired mind, desperate to communicate her newfound understanding, to prove her conversion, latched onto it.
“I want…” she started, but words failed. Language was a relic. Action was the only currency left.
She moved closer, her bare, swollen breasts pressing against the side of his ribcage. The contrast was absurd: her softness deformed into pillowy excess against the unyielding, carved stone of his torso. She turned her body, sliding alongside him, her back to his chest now. She could feel the heat of him searing into her spine. Then she bent her knees, lowering herself, her movements clumsy under the new, cumbersome weight she carried.
Her hands came up, not to touch him, but to brace herself on his hip and the pool’s edge. She was positioning herself. A frantic, shameful logic drove her. To kneel before his cock was submission, yes, but it was a common submission. Stacy was there. Others would be. She needed a gesture that was solely hers, one that articulated the depth of her psychological unraveling. One that showed she understood her new value was purely aesthetic, supplemental, a testament to his power.
She lowered herself further, until the soft, fleshy apex of her thighs, now lush and transformed, hovered beside the colossal curve of his upper arm. The bicep was level with her pelvis.
With a shuddering exhale that was her final farewell to Gloria the skeptic, the protester, the mother who made casseroles, she shifted her weight and brought her body down.
The humid, swollen folds of her pussy made contact with the sun-warmed, granite-like surface of his bicep. It wasn't an insertion. It was a smothering. A draping of soft, desperate flesh over an indifferent monument of hardened muscle.
A sharp, choked cry ripped from her throat. The sensation was all wrong, and that was the point. There was no penetration, no traditional friction. It was a grinding, humiliating pressure, the sensitive nerves of her clitoris and outer lips being compressed and rubbed against a surface as unyielding as a rock. It was sex erased of all intimacy, reduced to a base, mechanical assertion of hierarchy. She was using his body, a part designed for show, for a parody of sexual pleasure. She was making herself a toy against his arm.
She began to move.
Her hips rocked in a shallow, grinding circle, her swollen labia spreading and pressing against the round, hard mass of the muscle. Each slow, deliberate rotation was a act of profound self-debasement. Her face, visible in profile to the women watching from the water, was a mask of agonized, unwanted ecstasy. Tears streamed down her cheeks, cutting through the fine golden dust still clinging to her skin. Her mouth hung open, saliva wetting her chin. She wasn't looking at him. She was staring blankly at the shimmering water, her eyes unfocused, seeing nothing but the internal void her movements were trying to fill.
"Look at that fuckin' dedication!" BT-9’s voice buzzed from above, the lens of his single eye glowing with focused light. "Total system override! She's rebooting her whole OS on his gun show! Get that left profile, yeah, the tear-juice is primo."
The women in the pool were silent now, watching this new ritual. Stacy had pulled away from Chad’s cock, wiping her mouth, her own expression one of stunned recognition. This was a next step. A darker sacrament. Marcy watched with a faint, approving smile, as if seeing a difficult student finally grasp a fundamental theorem. Leah’s analytical mind was frantically trying to categorize the behavior—"Symbolic auto-erotic dominance assertion via tertiary musculature"—but the words dissolved into a warm, syrupy awe.
Chad looked down. He watched the top of Gloria’s head, her dark curls shaking with the rhythm of her grim, persistent grinding. He felt the wet, hot pressure against his bicep. It was nothing, physically. Less sensation than a light massage. But psychologically, it was a conquest more complete than any fuck. This was a woman annihilating her pride on a part of his body that wasn't even sexual. He shifted his arm slightly, flexing.
The bicep hardened further, bulging upwards into her.
Gloria wailed, a broken, guttural sound. The increased pressure, the conscious flex, was an acknowledgement. It destroyed her. It completed her. Her movements became more frantic, less controlled. Her knees trembled. The fleshy slap of her pelvis against his skin mingled with the splash of pool water and the low thrum of music. She was sobbing openly now, grinding with a frantic, shameful need, chasing a release that was as much about obliteration as pleasure.
“You see?” Chad said, his voice cutting through her sobs. He wasn’t talking to her. He was addressing the pool, the neighborhood, the night. “This is what clarity looks like. No more confusion.”
He let her continue for another minute, a public display of ruin. Then, with a grunt that was almost boredom, he straightened his arm.
The support vanished. Gloria stumbled forward, her legs buckling under her new weight and the frantic depletion of her energy. She caught herself on the pool edge, gasping, her body slick with sweat and mist, the inner thighs of her ruined panties soaked with her own arousal. She hunched over, the massive weight of her breasts swinging heavily, her whole body trembling with aftershocks of chemical need and profound humiliation.
Chad turned away from her, as if she were a task he’d completed. He looked at the canister in his hand, then out past his fence, to the quiet, dark houses of Willow Ridge. Lights were off. Families sleeping. Lives ticking along in their petty, untouched rhythms.
“They’re waiting,” Dr. Sharpe said from the shadows near her car. She hadn’t moved. Her expression was one of pure clinical satisfaction. “The agent has a half-life of six hours in open air. Maximum psychological vulnerability will be between two and four hours post-exposure. The window is optimal.”
Chad nodded. He felt enormous, invincible. The hunger in his gut was no longer for a single woman, or even a backyard full of them. It was territorial, vast.
“BT, you getting this?” he asked, his voice a low rumble.
“Bro, I’m getting everything,” the drone chirped, zipping closer to Chad’s face. “The Gloria files are uploaded. Pure fire. The neighbors are gonna cream their shorts when the feed goes live.”
“Not a feed,” Chad said, hefting the canister. “A live broadcast. From the source.”
He walked towards the gate, his footsteps heavy on the concrete. The women in the pool watched him go, a collective held breath. Marcy was the first to move. She hauled her immense body out of the water with a sound like a hundred wet sponges being lifted, water streaming off her curves in sheets. She didn’t bother with clothes. She simply followed, her bare feet slapping on the wet ground, her proportions making her gait a slow, majestic, side-to-side sway. Stacy scrambled out after her, then Maya, then Leah helping Kelsey. They were a procession of the transformed, dripping and jiggling, falling into step behind their locus.
Gloria, still trembling by the pool, lifted her head. She saw them leaving, a parade of absurd, beautiful flesh following the giant into the dark. To be left behind was now the deepest terror she could conceive. With a whimper that was her last human sound, she pushed herself upright, ignoring the ache between her legs, the unfamiliar drag of her new body, and stumbled after them, taking her place at the very rear, her head bowed.
Chad pushed open the wrought-iron gate. It squealed on its hinges, a sound that seemed to slice through the suburban quiet. He stepped onto the manicured sidewalk of Cypress Lane. The street was deserted, lit by the cold, blue-white glow of LED streetlights. Perfectly trimmed lawns. Two-car garages. Ceramic garden gnomes.
He raised the canister, pointing it down the length of the street.
“Let’s see who’s home,” he muttered, and pressed the button.
The golden mist hissed out, quieter this time, a spectral serpent uncoiling into the still night air. It drifted, purposeful, drawn by subtle currents toward vent intakes, open bathroom windows, the seals under front doors. It clung to rose bushes and minivan windshields. It seeped into the very fabric of the neighborhood.
He began to walk, a titan on a midnight stroll. Marcy and the others fanned out behind him, a living cloak of flesh. BT-9 hovered at his shoulder, a silent, recording angel of the new world.
From a house on the left, a light flicked on in an upstairs window. A face appeared, blurry behind the glass. A woman, middle-aged, squinting into the night. She saw the procession. She saw Chad, naked, monumental, glowing faintly under the streetlight. She saw the women following him, their bodies a surreal vision of excessive curves. Her hand went to her mouth.
Chad stopped. He turned his head, met her gaze. He didn’t smile. He simply raised the canister and gave it another short burst, aimed at her window.
The mist kissed the glass, beading, seeping through the microscopic gap in the frame.
The woman didn’t retreat. She stared. Her expression of shock slowly melted, smoothed out by a deepening, vacant curiosity. Her hand fell from her mouth. It went to the collar of her nightgown.
Chad turned and kept walking. He didn’t need to watch. He knew the script now. The agent was the playwright. He was the lead actor. The street, the houses, the sleeping world—it was all becoming his stage.
The hum of the pool filter faded behind them. A new sound emerged: the soft, syncopated slap of bare, heavy feet on asphalt, the wet rustle of immense breasts moving without restraint, and the low, anticipatory breath of a giant walking into his kingdom. The night was no longer quiet. It was holding its breath, waiting for the screaming to start, and then, the moaning.
