Chapter 1: Introduction
Ronnie Coleman, tall and muscular as a Greek god, heaved up a 450-pound barbell with an ease born from years of dedicated weightlifting. The muscles in his chest and arms flexed as he controlled the weight's descent in a slow, smooth movement, while his deep-voiced grunts added to the otherworldly atmosphere in the Cobra Gym.
His brother, Donnie, sporting the same muscular physique and bald head as Ronnie, spotted him from a nearby bench, his thick full lips curling into a smirk.
"Damn, Ron, you're making it look too easy," Donnie taunted, his smokey baritone filling the gym with a relaxed humor.
Ronnie's goatee twitched as he racked the barbell, his piercing black eyes meeting Donnie's in the mirror. He smiled back at his reflection before turning towards Donnie.
"Well, Don, if it were easy, everyone would do it."
The air in the gym was thick with the aroma of sweat and determination, as their private training facility, Cobra Gym, was a sacred space to the Coleman Twins. The walls were adorned with framed pictures of their accomplishments and hard-earned physiques, an ever-present reminder of years spent honing their craft. The gleaming metal equipment, each piece painstakingly selected by the brothers themselves, held pride of place in this temple of strength and fortitude.
Every move, every lift, was executed with precision and control, a testament to the discipline and focus that had made the Coleman Twins legends in the fitness world.
But now, with their first annual All Black Identical Twins event just weeks away, their sanctuary had been violated. Equipment had been sabotaged, weights misplaced or broken, and something seemed off. The brothers were understandably concerned and determined to find out who was behind this disturbing turn of events. Then Donnie picks up a fitness magazine and opens it looking at an article about John James. Then Donnie looks at Ronnie and says "John James is talking about us in this article. Now he is accusing us of being racist for creating an All Black Identical Twins event ."
Ronnie frowns and leans over, looking over Donnie's shoulder at the article. "That jackass," he growls, "That's bullshit where here in Atlanta Georgia and most of our clients are Black and most of our support is also Black.
Besides, this event is about bringing our community together and celebrating our uniqueness. Why would he even insinuate something so ridiculous?"
Donnie shakes his head in disbelief while Ronnie put his hand on Donnie's shoulder. "Hey, don't worry about it, we know the truth and that's all that matters," Ronnie assured him.
But the incident further highlights their need to find the culprit behind the sabotage,
Then Ronnie says "If John James is behind all of this then it's him that's being racist. But we got to find evidence before accusing him." Then Donnie says "Yeah I know. But who can help us?
Then Maya walks into the Gym over hearing The Twins conversation, she comes up to them and says, "What's going on you two? You both look like you've seen a ghost."
Donnie looks at her, smiles, "Hey Maya, these damn saboteurs are at it again. I swear, we just had a new set of weight discs delivered yesterday, and now they're nowhere to be found."
Maya gasped, her hands resting on her hips.
"Seriously? That's beyond frustrating! But hey, you know I'm always here to help. What can I do?"
Ronnie looks at Donnie and then back to Maya. "We're glad you're here, Maya, because we need your help. We suspect that someone might be deliberately sabotaging our gym, but we don't have any concrete evidence. We were just discussing hiring a detective to look into it, but we haven't made any decisions yet."
Maya tilted her head, her brows furrowed as she thought.
"That's definitely a smart move," she said finally. "But finding the right detective might be a challenge. We need someone who is not only experienced but also has a good understanding of the fitness industry and, well, our unique situation."
Ronnie nodded. "Exactly. We need someone who can connect the dots and get to the root of the problem quickly."
Maya smiled slyly. "Actually, I might know just the person for the job. Miles Draven, he's an old friend of mine and a damn good detective.
He's worked on some high-profile cases, and he has a way of finding the truth that others can't," Maya said, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.
Ronnie and Donnie exchanged a nod, their worry lines softening slightly at the prospect of someone coming to their aid.
Then Ronnie says to Maya "So how do you and this Miles Draven know each other?" Maya smiles at the question. "Well, we go way back. Miles and I grew up in the same rough part of town, and we kind of looked out for each other. He's always been an ace at solving puzzles and finding things, and he joined the army after high school, where he ended up becoming a detective," Maya explained, her voice filled with pride for her friend.
"I'll make a call," Ronnie decided, reaching for his phone.
"Awesome! Oh and Ronnie, Tell him that it was me who recommended you to call him." Maya says to Ronnie as they all walk into the office away from the gym
equipment.
Ronnie nods, dialing Miles' number. After a few rings, a gruff voice answers, "Draven speaking."
"Hello Miles, this is Ronnie Coleman. We've been referred to you by our friend Maya Carter. We have a bit of a situation here, and we were hoping you could help us out," said Ronnie.
A pause on the line and then, "Sure thing, Ronnie. What kind of situation are we looking at?" Miles responded.
"Well, it's our private gym, Cobra Gym. We are hosting the first annual All Black Identical Twins event, and recently we've been facing some equipment sabotage. It's very disruptive and could cause safety issues." Ronnie explained.
Miles let out a low whistle, "I see, well that does sound suspicious. I'll need to come to the gym and take a look around. When you say your name is Ronnie Coleman do you mean to tell me that your one of the famous Black Male Fitness instructors also known as "The Super Fitness Twins?" Miles asked.
"Yes, that's us," Donnie said, "Ronnie and Donnie Coleman the owners of The Cobra Gym And we would appreciate any help you can offer us in this matter."
Ronnie added, "We want our event to celebrate our community and bring people together. We've never faced anything like this before, it's disturbing and very suspicious."
"Alright, I'll meet you at The Cobra Gym this afternoon at 1pm" Miles said as he could hear paper shuffling on his end. "I'll have a few questions for you both.
Don't worry, I'll be discreet and keep everything confidential," Miles assured them.
Later that afternoon, Miles arrived at the gym. He wore a dark suit and a trench coat that would have made even the toughest gangster think twice about crossing him. He carried a leather briefcase, looking every bit the part of the hard-boiled detective that he was.
As he made his way inside, Maya greeted him with a warm smile.
"Welcome to Cobra Gym, Miles.
It's good to see you again," Maya said, her voice bubbly and bright as she led him towards the office where Ronnie and Donnie were waiting.
"Thanks, Maya. It's been too long," Miles replied, his dry sense of humor sneaking into his voice as he looked around the gym.
As they walked, Miles took note of the pristine equipment, the spotlessly clean floors, and the faint aroma of sweat and hard work lingering in the air.
He was greeted by Ronnie and Donnie with firm handshakes and piercing looks that sized him up in an instant.
"Miles, I'm Ronnie and this is my brother, Donnie," introduced one of the twins, his voice a low rumble that matched his imposing physique.
Miles nodded and shook both their hands firmly. "Nice to meet you both. Maya speaks very highly of you. She told me about your upcoming event, and it sounds like quite the spectacle."
"That's the plan.
And we want to make sure that our event goes off without a hitch," Ronnie said, a steely edge to his voice.
Miles understood their concerns, he had seen sabotage in his line of work as a detective and knew the damage it could cause. "Alright, I'll do my best to find out who's behind this and why," Miles said, his eyes narrowing as he glanced around the gym, taking in every detail.
Donnie nodded, looking grateful. "We appreciate that, Miles.
Then Miles looks back at The Coleman Twins and says "After you called me yesterday I did some of my own research and it turns out that someone named John James, a fitness blogger, has been talking smack about you guys and the All Black Twins event online, accusing you of racism.
I heard some nasty stuff he said in interviews and podcasts" Miles said, his dark brows furrowed in concern.
Ronnie scoffed at the accusations, his broad shoulders tensing.
"Racism? Us? That's ridiculous. We've worked tirelessly to bring our community together and celebrate our culture through fitness. Our event is all about unity and inclusivity.
We've never understood where this guy is coming from," Donnie interrupted, his voice rising in frustration.
"That's what I thought," Miles replied, nodding in agreement. "But it's worth looking into, just in case this so-called John James has any ties to your saboteur."
He opened his briefcase and took out a notebook and pen, ready to get down to business.
"So, let's start from the beginning.
Describe every strange occurrence you have noticed in this gym," Miles said, as he opened his notebook and prepared to take notes.
Ronnie and Donnie exchanged glances before recounting their experiences, starting from when equipment started to malfunction or went missing unexpectedly. They discussed how they initially thought it could just be a mistake or a one-time thing but soon realized it was something more deliberate and sinister.
Miles listened attentively and asked pointed questions to ensure he understood the situation as thoroughly as possible.
As Ronnie and Donnie spoke, Miles took detailed notes, ensuring he didn't miss a single detail.
"We've noticed that small appliances have gone missing, as well as minor wear and tear on heavy machinery that shouldn't be happening. We've also found strange messages written on the gym floor, which seem to reference the All Black Twins event. We believe someone is intentionally trying to derail our event and damage our reputation."
Miles' face was a mask of concentration, his expression grim as he considered the implications of their statements.
"I see, but I also have one other question to ask both of you?" Miles inquired, looking at Ronnie and Donnie alternately. "Have you encountered any people who might have reasons to want to sabotage your event? For instance, someone with a grudge against one of you, a competitor looking to take you down, or somebody just plain jealous of your success?" asked Miles.
Ronnie pondered the question for a moment before answering. "To be honest, our heads have been so concentrated on running our gym and getting this event off the ground, we haven't really had the time to think about potential enemies.
But now that I think about it, there is one person who might be angry with us for no reason except jealousy." Donnie replied, his brow furrowed in thought.
Maya, who had been silently listening, chimed in. "John James, the fitness blogger, springs to mind immediately. He's been sending us some aggressive messages since we started promoting the All Black Twins event. His website slammed us as racist for organizing an event specific to Black identical twins, even though it's open to all races and is meant to celebrate diversity in the fitness world," she said.
"Interesting," Miles said, intrigued. "Can you forward me the messages he sent you? I'd like to take a look at them."
"Sure thing," Donnie said, pulling up his email on his phone and forwarding the messages to Miles.
Miles scanned through them quickly, noting the condescending tone and outright accusations of racism. "Hmm, this is certainly worth investigating," he mused. "But even so, I can't jump to conclusions or assume the sabotage is solely due to him.
Then Miles says "There may be someone here on the inside who has a personal vendetta against you or an ulterior motive we are not aware of. We have to explore all possibilities before we can come to any meaningful conclusions."
Ronnie nodded in agreement, "You're right. We shouldn't jump to conclusions, but I can assure you that everyone on our team is trustworthy and shares our vision of promoting diversity and unity within the fitness world.
"Yes, I understand, but sometimes even trusted individuals can become disgruntled or swayed, especially when there's an opportunity for personal gain or a chance to get back at someone they think has wronged them," Miles said, trying to keep an open mind.
Donnie nodded in understanding, "Fair enough. We'll give you a list of all our employees and their contact information so you can follow up directly with them. We trust everyone that works here, but we're not going to let our guard down either."
Miles made a note in his book before closing it. Then Miles looks at Maya and says "I need to speak with Ronnie and Donnie alone for a moment, I promise it won't take long. Is there anywhere we can speak in private?"
Maya nodded knowingly and led Miles into the small office at the back of the gym. "Of course, Miles, I'll be just outside if you need me," she said with a comforting smile. She shut the door behind her, leaving Ronnie and Donnie to face Miles alone.
"Now, I need you to tell me everything you know about this John James character," Miles said in a serious tone.
"What is his connection to the fitness industry, and why might he want to sabotage you and your event?"
"John James is a fitness blogger who runs a website focused on critical reviews of fitness-related products and events," Ronnie explained.
"He's known for being controversial and can be rather rude to those he criticizes. But we genuinely can't see why he'd have a personal vendetta against us or why he would sabotage our event. I mean, we've never met the guy," Donnie added.
"I see," Miles nodded, his brow furrowing in thought. "But it's still worth cross-checking with his interactions with similar events or his past 'criticisms' of other athletes or organizations in the fitness world."
"Fair enough," Ronnie agreed.
Then Miles asks "This question is a little more personal , but I think it's important to get a complete picture. I did my research on both of you so I know that you both are married and have families. So my question is Have either of you cheated on your wives
, ever?" Miles asked, looking at Ronnie and Donnie alternately.
A shocked silence followed Miles' question, and the two brothers exchanged incredulous glances.
"What does that have to do with anything?" Donnie demanded, his voice tinged with anger and a note of hurt betrayal.
Miles sighed, holding up his hands in apology. "Look, I don't want to pry or make assumptions, but sometimes seemingly unrelated factors can play into a person's intentions and motivations. Because if either of you have had an affair with someone outside of your marriage's then someone might have video footage of this to use against you. I have dealt with cases in the past where the blackmailer threatens to expose extramarital affairs to ruin someone's reputation." Miles explained, lowering his voice so it wouldn't carry outside the door. Miles then says "Now if there is someone here on the inside with this
information they might use it to sabotage your event and blackmail you. That is why I am asking this question, and I hope you understand why it's important."
Ronnie and Donnie exchanged a glance, both of them wearing expressions that were some mixture of wariness and frustration. After a moment of silence, Ronnie shook his head. "No, we've never cheated on our wives," he insisted firmly. "We have been married for over twelve years and our families are very important to us.
Then Miles says "Are you sure because my job is to also prevent any damage to your reputation, personal or professional. If either of you have strayed from your marriage vows before I need to know. Any information can be useful in my investigation, " Miles continued, a look of intensity in his dark eyes.
Donnie nodded in agreement with Ronnie's statement, looking uncomfortable. "We understand that, Miles. It's just - it's quite personal," Donnie added, as he rubbed his bald head, appearing both defensive and guarded.
Miles let out a breath. "I understand. I know it's tough to talk about.
It's just that I want to make sure we're covering all the angles. I believe in doing everything possible to ensure that your event is a success. But without solid evidence, it would be hard to know for sure if someone is trying to blackmail you. And even harder to prove it," Miles said with a grave expression on his face.
"I see your point, Miles. And we appreciate your efforts to leave no stone unturned.
But we can assure you that neither one of us has cheated, and our marriages are strong," Ronnie said, standing his ground. Donnie nodded in agreement.
Miles studied their faces for a long moment before finally nodding. "Alright, I believe you. And I'm glad to hear it, given the high stakes of this investigation. While we're on the topic of personal matters, I also need to bring up something else that I've learned during my research.
It's about a fitness competition that you both entered last year - the Atlanta Fitness Classic, correct? Ronnie and Donnie exchanged a glance, both of them looking somewhat puzzled.
"Yes, that's right. But we didn't win, so I don't see what bearing that would have on anything. We've moved on from that competition and are focused on the All Black Twins event," Ronnie explained, looking mildly annoyed.
"But if there's something specific you'd like to know, we'll do our best to answer your questions."
Miles nodded and took out a folder from his briefcase. He opened it to reveal several printouts of online articles, along with some screenshots of social media posts. "The reason I'm asking is that I found some questionable posts from a few weeks ago that appear to be related to the Atlanta Fitness Classic. There were some online accusations from an anonymous source that claimed the competition was biased and that certain contestants had been given preferential treatment.
The postings seemed to suggest that Ronnie and Donnie, as identical twins, had somehow manipulated the judges, unfairly securing a higher placement in the competition due to their unique appearance. Extraordinary favoritism, claimed the comments, had weighted the scales in their favor.
Ronnie and Donnie were shocked, both by the nature of the accusations and by the vehemence with which they were made.
"Obviously, those claims are completely false," proclaimed Donnie, indignant. "We pride ourselves on being both honest and fair competitors. It was John James who originally made these baseless accusations, and we responded with a statement, firmly denying his allegations. He never provided any shred of evidence to support his claims, and no other news outlets picked up the story. It died down almost as quickly as it appeared, and we assumed the matter was closed," Donnie protested, his brows knit together in frustration.
Miles nodded as he listened, but his eyes narrowed as he continued to skim over the social media posts and articles he had collected.
"I see. Well, it's worth noting that this individual or group seems to have a grudge against you Ronnie and Donnie, possibly dating back to the Atlanta Fitness Classic competition. Whether it's connected to the events occurring here at your gym, or not, I cannot say for sure. But it's important to keep it in mind as we continue to investigate."
Then Donnie says "This guy is 50 years old and I don't know why he hates us so much. What did we ever do to him?" It's frustrating and discouraging to have someone like John James continuously bad-mouthing us. I guess some people just can't stand to see other people succeed, especially when we're working so hard to promote unity and inclusivity in the fitness community," Ronnie said, his voice heavy with emotion.
Miles nodded sympathetically. "I know it can be disheartening, but we can't let his negativity get in the way of our goals. Now tell me who trained you and inspired you both to become fitness instructors." Miles questioned.
"We were on this journey before we became professionals, and our uncle Buddy Cruzley was our inspiration.
He was a former gym owner and competitive bodybuilder who discovered us at a young age and took us under his wing. He introduced us to the world of fitness and helped us cultivate a love for it. He taught us the importance of discipline, consistency, and hard work. Uncle Buddy passed away before he could see us become The Super Fitness Twins, and we want to honor his legacy by continuing his work. We grew up without a father in the house and uncle Buddy stepped up to fill that void.
He taught us everything we know, and his impact on our lives goes far beyond the gym. And that was the reason we opened Cobra Gym, to provide a safe and nurturing space for inner city black youth to build themselves up physically and mentally, without fear of discrimination, to keep them out of trouble and off the streets. We both discovered that there were a lot of black male identical twins in the inner city just like us growing up with out a father in the home who were not blessed to have such a wonderful uncle like Uncle Buddy, and we wanted to share our passion for fitness, self-discipline, and respect with them. We want to bring out their best self, to unite them, give them a positive direction and inspire hope. We've have opened up four gyms and met over 60 sets of Black Male identical Twins in our community. Our number one goal is to keep all of the Black Male youth here in the State of Georgia off the streets and now that we have also met over 60 sets male identical twins from the age of 15 to 30. We decided to create an event specifically aimed at them, we've started the All Black Twins event.”
Ronnie and Donnie shared this information with a fierce determination in their expression, their eyes full of passion for their work. Miles could understand why they were so respected in the Black community. They had forged something truly meaningful and impactful with Cobra Gym.
“I understand,” Miles nodded, impressed by their work. “It’s wonderful that you’re using your influence to make a positive difference in young men’s lives. Your uncle would be proud.”
Ronnie smiled softly. "So as you can see, we are not being racist like John James says just because we are putting The Black male youth in our community first!
We are building something here for generations to come!"
Miles' brow furrowed in understanding, "I can see that. But I must still ask – have you encountered anyone suspicious on your property recently? Anyone who may have access to sensitive areas of the gym or the event grounds?"
Ronnie shook his head, "Not that I can recall. We have had a security team on duty at all times, and there have been no unusual visitors or incidents to report."
Donnie added, "Our employees have been background checked and are trustworthy.
Then Miles "Maybe so but I still need to interview each employee individually and examine any potential leads as to the cause of the sabotage.
It's essential to secure our event and establish the trust of our attendees, otherwise, the event could fail." He asked, with a stern tone.
Ronnie nodded in agreement, "We understand that, Miles.
We want you to do whatever is necessary to protect us from this sabotage and to reveal the identity of the person responsible for trying to damage our event and our reputation. Whatever it takes."
Miles appreciated Ronnie and Donnie's support, "Thank you. I'll come back tomorrow and start investigating individually starting with the gym's employees. Hopefully, we can get to the bottom of this before the event."
Ronnie nodded, looking relieved, "That would be great, Miles. We're counting on you."
Miles stood up and gathered his things. "In the meantime, make sure you keep an eye out for anything unusual and let me know immediately if anything else happens."
Donnie nodded, "Of course.
We appreciate your determination and dedication, Miles. It means a lot to us that you're taking this so seriously. We'll make sure to report anything unusual to you right away."
Miles smiled and stood up to leave. "Excellent. I'll be in touch with all of the employees for individual interviews starting tomorrow morning. Additionally, if you could have Maya send me any relevant files or information you may have on John James, that would be helpful as well. I plan to dig deeper into his possible involvement in all of this."
Ronnie stood up and extended his hand.
"Thank you once again, Miles, for your help. We truly appreciate your determination to help us solve this mystery before our biggest event yet."
Donnie nodded in agreement, shaking Miles' hand firmly. "Absolutely. We trust you to find the truth and get to the bottom of this situation."
Miles nodded and then glanced toward Maya, who was standing quietly outside the room. "I'll be in touch with Maya as soon as I'm ready to start the interviews tomorrow morning.
I'll also need you to provide me with access to any surveillance footage from the gym, as well as any records of who has had access to the equipment storage rooms in the past few months."
As Miles left the room, Maya stepped forward and handed him a folder filled with employee records, surveillance logs, and other relevant information. "Here you go, Miles. Everything you asked for is in there. I've also included a list of our vendors and contractors who have had access to the gym recently.
I'll make sure that everyone knows you are coming and that they should be available for interviews," Maya said with a smile.
Miles nodded, taking the folder from Maya. "Thank you, Maya. I appreciate your help in this matter. If you or Ronnie or Donnie think of anything else, please don't hesitate to reach out."
Maya walked him to the door of the gym, and Miles stepped out into the cool evening air. He took a deep breath, bracing himself for the tasks ahead as he slid into his car and started the engine.
He placed the folder on the passenger seat and glanced at his watch. It was already 7 pm, but he knew there would be plenty of work to do.
As he navigated through the busy streets of Atlanta, Miles couldn't help but feel a sense of responsibility to Ronnie and Donnie and their mission to make a positive impact in their community. He knew that this investigation was crucial in ensuring the safety and success of their event.
Miles arrived home and immediately set to work.
He poured over the documents, photographs, and surveillance footage provided by Maya, trying to find any inconsistencies, discrepancies, or leads on who might be behind the sabotage. Hours passed, and sleep was no longer an option. The adrenaline of the investigation kept him going.
By 4 in the morning, his eyes were heavy and his mind fuzzy. He decided to take a quick power nap. Just as he was about to drift into sleep, his phone buzzed with a message from Ronnie.
Michael woke up with a jolt, rubbing his eyes and squinting at the screen. "Ronnie: Hey Miles, just wanted to check in. Anything new? I'm getting worried that we don't have enough time to find out who's behind this," The message read.
Michael picked up his phone, sending a quick reply, "Not yet, but I've been pouring over everything you and Donnie provided and will pick up where we left off after a short rest.
I'm confident we'll find the culprit, but I need a clear head and sharp focus. There are many variables to consider, and it may take some time."
He set the phone down and leaned back, hoping for a solid two-hour sleep cycle. His eyelids became heavy and drifted into a dreamless sleep. The alarm blared on his phone an hour later, but it was enough to rejuvenate Michael's energy a bit. He glanced around the dimly lit room and decided to get back to work. Miles went back to sleep and woke up at 8:30am , he had a breakfast smoothie and jumped back into the investigation.
