Chapter 1: Introduction
The forest hummed around me, alive in ways I could never have imagined. The air was thick with the scent of something sweet and intoxicating, like crushed flowers and kerosene. My boots sank slightly into the spongy ground as I moved. The twin suns above cast their golden light through the glossy, rubbery leaves of the towering trees, painting the world in shifting shades of amber and violet.
I was alone... Or so I thought.
The first sign was the silence. The usual chorus of alien arthropods and distant avian calls had faded, leaving only the soft rustle of the wind through the trees. My pulse quickened—not with fear, but with the quiet thrill of discovery. This was why I’d come to Xylos. To document, to understand, to be the first human to truly know this place.
Then the ground came to life. A glistening vine with a sickly sheen, the thickness of my forearm, coiled around my ankle before I could react. I barely had time to gasp before another lashed out, wrapping around my wrist, yanking me off balance. My sample case clattered to the ground as I hit the damp earth. I was more shocked then hurt but I was paralyzed by fear and confusion.
I could feel the vines against my skin, pulsating with a slow, rhythmic throb. My clumsy fingers scrambled for the knife at my belt, but the tendrils were faster. They tightened their grip, dragging me toward the center of a pit-like maw. Roots writhed beneath the soil like living things, and I realized, with a sickening lurch, that something big was moving beneath.
I had never read about this. I was completely unprepared. No reports, no warnings. Just me, a handful of vines, and the slow, inevitable drag toward something that felt hungry.
The vines tightened, their grip unrelenting. My fingers fumbled for the knife again, but the moment I touched the hilt, my arm was lashed and pulled by another tendril. The vines pulsed, reacting to my resistance. A low, guttural hum filled the air, vibrating through the ground, through my bones. I was going to die here. I closed my eyes, too terrified witness myself plunge into the abyss.
Then—silence.
The vines went slack. The pressure eased. I gasped, blinking up at the canopy, half-expecting to see some monstrous creature looming over me. Instead, I saw her.
She stood above me, her iridescent skin catching the dappled light like polished gemstone. Zylara, the new research station commander. I’d only seen images of her before, in the memorandum detailing her appointment. She was short, curvy and with a presence larger than her small stature should have allowed.
The tentacles on her back swayed like living ribbons, their tips twitching as if tasting the air. Her red eyes locked onto mine, piercing through me. I should have been relieved. She had saved me. But instead, I felt both naked, and truly seen. There was also an intense attraction.
She didn’t speak. She didn’t need to. Yet her voice echoed in my mind, smooth and hypnotic. *"Foolish male. You’re lucky I found you."* She wasn't angry or even mean spirited. The line was delivered very mater-of-fact.
I balked. Her voice wasn’t in my ears, but inside my skull. Smooth, liquid-metal words slid into my thoughts with an unsettling ease. I’d heard rumors about the Xylosians. People whispered of telepathy, of hypnotic suggestion. Suposedly they could force you to walk around naked and give them everything you own. I’d dismissed them as over-hyped nonsense. Now, with her crimson gaze boring into mine, there was no doubt.
*"You’re lucky I found you."* she repeated, her lips not moving. The words curled around my mind, warm and insistent. I tried to swallow but my throat suddenly fell like a sandy desert.
I forced a nod, clearing my dry throat. "Y-yes. Thank you, Captain. I wasn't expecting to see you so soon... luck me, I guess." The words came out hoarse. The vines at my feet twitched, as if reacting to my voice. Zylara’s red eyes flicked down to them, then back to me. A slow, knowing smile curled her lips.
*"You’re welcome."* Her words... thoughts? Her words where sweet nectar sliding over my mind. *"But you shouldn’t have been out here alone, Max. Where is you Mistre... er... Where is your escort?"*
I swallowed. "I... Don't have one. I was collecting samples. The forest seemed safe."
Her smile widened. *"Safe?"* The word echoed in my skull, laced with amusement. *"This is Xylos.
Nothing here is safe."*
Her voice coiled around my thoughts like smoke, warm and unyielding. I shivered, not from fear, but from the way her presence seemed to press against my mind, soft but insistent, like the first touch of a lover’s fingers. The vines at my feet twitched again, as if sensing my unease.
I swallowed, my throat dry. "I—I didn’t realize."
*"You should have."*
Her tendrils swayed, their tips brushing the air as if testing for something. The movement was hypnotic, mesmerizing. I found myself staring, unable to look away.
Her eyes were like molten rubies, burning into me, and I felt something inside me unraveling—something I hadn’t even known was there. A part of me wanted to resist, to pull away, but another part, deeper and more primal, wanted to surrender.
*"You’re trembling."* she observed, her voice a velvet whisper in my mind. *"Did the the pit maw hurt you? Or is it me, you're afraid of?"*
I should have lied. But the words wouldn’t come. Instead, I felt my body betray me, my breath hitching as her gaze held mine. The vines at my feet pulsed, as if reacting to my pulse.
"N-no." I admitted, sheepishly. "Not afraid. Just... surprised. Your powers... They are kind of overwhelming." I blushed, finding it difficult to meet her gaze.
Her smile deepened, slow and deliberate, like a predator savoring the moment before the kill. *"Surprised? But not frightened. Good."*
The vines at my feet twitched again, their movements now sluggish, as if drained of their earlier aggression. Zylara’s tendrils swayed, brushing against the air in a way that made my skin prickle. The sensation was strange—like static electricity, but warmer, more alive.
*"You’re different from the others."* she murmured into my mind.
I blinked. "Others?"
*"The other human males."* Her voice was smooth, almost amused.
*"The ones who came before you. Males who thought they could tame this world."*
I swallowed, my throat tight. "I don’t want to tame it. I just want to understand it."
*"Understanding is power."* she said, stepping closer. Her tendrils swayed, brushing against my arm like silk. I flinched, but didn’t pull away.
*"You’re not like them."* she murmured, her voice curling around my thoughts. *"You don’t posture. You don’t resist."*
As Intimidating as she was, I couldn’t look away from her eyes. They were like twin embers burning into my soul, and I felt myself sinking deeper into their hypnotic pull.
"You’re right." I admitted softly. "I'm not a fighter. Your power doesn't frighten me. It impresses me."
Her smile widened, slow and deliberate, as if she had been waiting for those words. *"Good."* she murmured, a hit of a blush touching her cheeks. *"It isn't a man's place to fight."* The words echoed in my mind, not as a thought, but as a command. Zylara's voice was a velvet noose, tightening around my will. I opened myself to it's warm embrace. My body relaxed, my shoulders slumping as if some unseen weight had been lifted. The vines at my feet twitched one last time before retreating into the earth, their threat dissolved by her powerful presence.
She stepped closer seeming to inspect me. The tentrals on her back flicked aound me, as if tasting my scent. Seeming satisfied, she gestured for me to follow her. *"Come with me, I want to test some things. You seem... compatible with me, some how."* she murmured into my mind. The words wrapped around my thoughts, warm and unyielding. I could tell that she was using some kind of suggestive power on me. It was subtle and I felt I could resist it if I wanted to. But I chose to let it take root in my mind.
Perhaps I should have resisted, should have questioned. But the moment her voice wrapped around my mind, something inside me wanted to yield to her.
*"Come."* she repeated, her crimson eyes burning into mine. The command was soft, almost tender. And yet, it left no room for debate.
I nodded blankly before I could think any further.
Zylara’s smile deepened, slow and knowing. *"Good boy."*
The words sent a shiver down my spine. *Good boy.* No one had ever spoken to me like that. It wasn't condescending yet I was defiantly spoken down to. Still it filled me with a warm joy. I felt my cheeks burn and my lips curl into a silly smile.
Zylara moved with grace through the thick forest. The tendrils on her back swayed like living ribbons, their tips brushing against the air as if tasting the world around us. I found myself watching them, mesmerized, unable to look away. She led me through the dense undergrowth with effortless confidence, her bare feet pressing into the spongy ground without hesitation. I followed, my boots sinking slightly with each step, my mind still reeling from the way her voice had burrowed into my thoughts.
