Chapter 1: Introduction
The coastal cabin creaked softly in the wind, a gentle symphony that echoed Laura's own weariness. She had driven for what felt like an eternity, leaving the city's chaos behind and embracing the solitude of the winding country roads. The sun dipped low in the sky, casting an orange glow over the rugged landscape, as if nature itself welcomed her with open arms.
Laura stepped onto the porch, her shoes crunching on the weathered planks. The cabin was humble, with a rustic charm that felt like a breath of fresh air.
The scent of saltwater and old wood filled her nostrils, a stark contrast to the sterile, air-freshened environment she had left behind. She took a deep breath, feeling the tension in her shoulders begin to loosen.
She pushed open the creaky door, her suitcase thudding against the worn wooden floor. The interior was cozy, with a small kitchenette and a living space that featured a worn-out sofa and a well-loved armchair. The walls were adorned with seashells and faded photographs of people she didn't recognize, their smiling faces creating a warm, inviting atmosphere.
A small coffee table held a couple of candles and a stack of well-thumbed paperbacks. Laura dropped her bag by the door and let her eyes wander, taking in the familiar yet unfamiliar surroundings.
The cabin was a world away from her suburban home, with its featureless walls and matching furniture sets. Here, everything was unique, tangible, and lived-in.
She made her way to the kitchenette, running her fingers over the smooth countertop, worn from years of use. A small vase held a single dried wildflower, its petals soft and delicate against the rough texture of the pottery. She noticed a note propped up against a jar of honey next to the stove.
*Welcome, Laura. Hope you find some peace here. - Margaret*
Laura smiled, appreciating the personal touch.
Margaret must be the owner, she thought. She poured herself a glass of water from the tap, the liquid cold and refreshing. As she drank, she notices a scrap of parchment under the stack of books.
Curiosity piqued, she sets down her glass and picks it up. It's a hand-drawn map, sketched in pencil, with what looks like a path leading from the cabin to a secluded beach. She smiles, excitement stirring within her. This was exactly what she needed - an adventure, a break from the monotony of her daily life. Peering at the map again she saw faint scribbles in the edges. Turning the map and folling the words she read:
"When the shore sings beneath the hollow moon,
And the tide curls soft toward her womb,
Let the hollow-hearted bride walk bare into the dark.
Oil her skin in sweetness and silence.
Clothe not the flesh unloved, nor break the hush with words.
When the water rises, the Sea will know her.
The Sea will open. And the Sea will plant her with life unimagined.
She shall burn with inner warmth, And she shall never be cold again."
Laura stared at the words, her brow furrowed. They seemed almost... poetic. A shiver ran down her spine, a mix of discomfort and intrigue. She folded the map and tucked it into her back pocket as she stood and pulled on her jacket. There was just enough light left she should be able to find the cave today.
She slipped out the back door, crunching through the sand toward the water's edge. The air was cool, the sun a fading ember on the horizon. The seashells under her feet crunched and popped with each step, adding to the rhythm of the waves.
As she walked, she thought about the poem. *When the shore sings beneath the hollow moon...* What did it mean? Was it some kind of ritual? She shook her head, the salty breeze whipping her hair around her face. No, don't get carried away, Laura. It's just a poem.
Probably nothing more than some romantic musings left behind by a previous guest. She tried to shake off the goosebumps prickling her arms and focused on the path ahead. The sand was cool and firm beneath her feet, each step taking her further from the cabin and closer to the edge of the world.
The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of pink and orange that reflected off the water. Laura was no longer just walking; she was exploring, discovering. The wind picked up, carrying with it the scent of the coming night and the distant smell of a wood-burning fire.
Laura stopped to tighten her jacket around her, feeling a mix of anticipation and unease. The beach seemed to stretch out forever, the sand stretching in both directions like a deserted runway.
As she walked, she realized she hadn't heard another human voice since she left the cabin. The only sounds were the crashing waves and the occasional cry of a seagull. It was both liberating and eerie, this vast emptiness.
Laura's footsteps were the only mark she left on the world, the tide quickly erasing them behind her. She walked until she reached a large outcrop of rocks, their jagged edges jutting out against the skyline. It was then that she noticed the faint path leading between the rocks, barely visible in the growing darkness.
She pulled out the map, squinting at the lines and shading. This must be it. She slipped off her shoes and socks, tucking them into her jacket. Barefoot, she stepped onto the cool, damp sand, feeling the grains shift and squeeze between her toes.
The path was narrow, winding between the rocks like a secret passage. She felt something, she couldn't say what but she wanted to explore further, however, It was too dark to safely traverse it tonight.
Laura sighed, glancing back at the fading sunlight. She'd walk the path tomorrow, in the clear light of day.
