Chapter 2: Day 1 – Arrival & Emptiness
Laura trudged back to the cabin, her heart pounding in her chest, her skin prickling with an unexplainable sensation. The beach walk had left her invigorated yet unsettled, like a puzzle piece that didn't quite fit. She unlocked the door, the familiar creak a comforting sound after the eerie silence of the beach.
The cabin was dark, save for the soft glow of the moonlight filtering through the window panes. She took a moment to appreciate the subtle dance of shadows on the weathered floorboards, the way the salt air clung to the dust motes, making them shimmer like tiny diamonds.
Laura kicked off her damp shoes and padded over to the kitchenette, where she lit one of the candles from the coffee table. The flame flickered to life, casting warm, dancing light across the room.
She poured herself a glass of wine from the bottle on the counter, taking a sip and letting the crisp, cool liquid settle in her throat. The day's events swirled in her mind - the long drive, the beach, the poem. She couldn't shake the feeling that she was standing on the precipice of something, though she wasn't sure what.
The wine helped to soothe her nerves, the alcohol warming her insides and making her limbs feel loose and heavy. She carried her glass over to the sofa and sat down, the creaking springs sighing beneath her weight.
She picked up the map again , the yellowed paper crinkling softly between her fingers. The poem caught her eye once more, the words seeming to jump off the page and dance in front of her.
*Oil her skin in sweetness and silence...*
Laura shivered, her mind racing, her body responding in ways she didn't quite understand. She took another sip of wine, the liquid sloshing gently against the sides of the glass.
She felt a strange compulsion, a desire to obey the poem's instructions. To oil her skin in sweetness and silence, to walk bare into the dark. Her heart pounded in her chest, her breaths coming in shallow gasps.
She tried to push the thought away, but it persisted, gnawing at her like a relentless itch.
She set the map aside and took another sip of wine, attempting to distract herself.
But the words lingered, a haunting melody she couldn't shake off. She stood up, pacing the small space, as if the physical movement could exorcise the thoughts from her mind.
*The Sea will know her.*
Laura's breath hitched, her chest tightening. She walked to the window, staring out at the dark sea. The moon was high now, casting a silver path across the water. She could see the outcrop of rocks jutting out, the faint silhouette of the path leading to the cave.
Seeking to distract herself from her thoughts she slipped out of her clothes, her hand drifting down between her thighs, as she thought about her marriage . She and Bob used to be so passionate, so full of life. But somewhere along the line, their love had turned into a well-worn routine, their intimacy reduced to a perfunctory chore. She couldn't pinpoint exactly when the fire had started to fade, but she knew it had been a long time since she'd felt truly alive.
Laura laid back on the sofa, her fingers tracing circles around her nipple. She tried to lose herself in the sensation, to let the wine and the warmth of the cabin take her away. Thinking of Bob and her when younger, wasn't bringing her the relief she needed . Her fingers continued their dance, but her mind remained preoccupied. The poem's words echoed in her head, each syllable like a footstep on the beach.
*Oil her skin in sweetness and silence...*
She took a deep breath, her eyes fluttering closed as she thought of her encounter with Marcus in The Playground, how he had taken her so completely.
She tried to recreate that sensation, that feeling of being totally consumed, but it was no use. The ghosts of her past kept intruding, their whispers drowning out the present.
Frustrated, Laura gave up and pulled on her robe, the silky fabric soft against her skin. She walked over to the kitchenette and poured herself another glass of wine, needing something to take the edge off her restless mind.
As she took a sip, she noticed the small jar of honey on the counter. An idea sparked in her mind, and she felt a small thrill of anticipation. She picked up the jar, her eyes scanning the poem once more.
*Oil her skin in sweetness and silence...* A slow smile spread across her face as she unscrewed the lid. The scent of honey wafted up, sweet and warm, filling her nostrils. She dipped her fingers into the jar, the thick, golden liquid clinging to her skin.
Laura carried the honey to the sofa, setting it down on the coffee table. She sat down, the cushions shifting beneath her, and began to rub the honey onto her arms, her legs, her neck.
The sweet, sticky liquid felt cool against her skin, the scent filling the cabin like a sweet, intoxicating perfume. Each stroke of her fingers was deliberate, sensual, as if she were anointing herself for some ancient ritual.
Laura closed her eyes, her breaths coming slower, deeper. She could feel the honey hardening slightly on her skin, a contrast to the warmth of the cabin. She lifted her hands to her breasts, her fingers circling her nipples, the honey making them feel even more sensitive.
A soft moan escaped her lips as she continued to explore her body, the honey acting as a lubricant, smoothing her movements.
She felt alive, every nerve ending tingling with anticipation. The cabin's air was thick with the scent of sweetness and her own arousal, a heady mix that made her head spin.
She spread her legs slightly, her fingers delving into the haven between her thighs. She was already slick, the honey adding to her natural wetness. She rubbed herself in slow, deliberate circles, her breath hitching as pleasure coursed through her.
Images danced in her mind - the beach, the cave, the sea, Marcus. Each one added fuel to the fire burning inside her. She tried to stay focused on Marcus, but the cave kept chasing it away . The images of the sea and the poem were equally persistent, each vying for her attention.
It was too much, too overwhelming. Laura couldn't separate her thoughts from her feelings, her past from her present. As her fingers dipped in and out of her folds, coating herself in the honey, she would get close, only to lose the feeling right before release.
She couldn't concentrate; the words of the poem kept interrupting her thoughts, like an unwanted guest at a party.
*When the tide curls soft toward her womb...*
Laura moaned in frustration, her body tense with unfulfilled desire. She tried to block out the words, her brain screaming at her to focus, but they were relentless.
*Let the hollow-hearted bride walk bare into the dark...*
She threw her head back, a guttural growl escaping her lips. She needed release, needed to purge these thoughts that plagued her.
But the more she tried to focus, the more elusive it became. It was as if the cabin itself was conspiring against her, the ancient walls holding her desires at bay.
Exhausted she drifted off to sleep.
