Chapter 1: The Last Spanking at Home
The apartment smelled like her mother’s perfume—something floral and sharp, like a warning. Amy stood in the middle of the worn linoleum, her suitcase a mute accusation by the door. The room was a tight, sunless box. Her single bed was made too straight, the sheets crisp and cold.
“You’re really doing this.”
It wasn’t a question. Wendy Carter stood in the doorway, holding the manila envelope from the agency. Her eyes were the same green as Amy’s, but hardened at the edges, like sea glass.
“I leave on Tuesday,” Amy said, her voice quieter than she intended.
Wendy placed the envelope on the small table. It made a solid, final sound. “And you think you’re ready for that? For mucking out stalls in a hundred-degree heat, taking orders from some stranger?”
“It’s not just that. It’s the horses. The space. It’s… freedom.”
“Freedom.” Wendy tasted the word, found it bitter. She walked to the closet, her movements precise. She opened the door and didn’t hesitate. Her hand closed around the smooth, worn wood of the spanking board. It was just two long, polished slats, drilled together. A relic.
Amy’s breath hitched. Her braids felt suddenly childish against her neck.
“You think I don’t know why you’re really going?” Wendy didn’t turn around. “The city’s too small for you. My rules are too tight. You want to run where things are wild. But baby, wild things get broken.”
“Mom—”
“No.” Wendy turned. She held the board loosely, a terrible familiarity in her grip. “You’re leaving my house. But you’re not leaving my responsibility. Not until you’re on that bus. So you’re going to get one last reminder of what happens when you chase a feeling without thinking.”
The air left the room. This was their oldest, strangest ritual. The punishment that had always, secretly, felt like a knot being tightened and then released. Amy’s cheeks flooded with heat that had nothing to do with shame.
“Over the bed. Now.”
The command was quiet, absolute. Amy moved. The cold of the chenille bedspread seeped through her thin leggings as she bent over, presenting the curve of her rear. Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She heard the soft swish of her mother moving behind her, the quiet intake of breath.
The first swat of the board was a crack that split the apartment’s silence. A line of pure, stunning fire bloomed across both cheeks. Amy gasped, fingers clawing at the bedspread.
“This is for not discussing it with me first,” Wendy said, her voice low and steady.Thwack.
The second was lower, a deeper burn that made Amy’s legs jerk.
“This is for romanticizing a life you know nothing about.”
Thwack.
The third landed on the tender undercurve, a bright, shocking pain that drew a sharp cry from Amy’s throat. Tears sprang to her eyes. The board wasn’t like a hand. It was impersonal, judicial. It spoke a language of pure consequence.
“You think your willfulness is strength,” Wendy continued, the board falling again in the same brutal spot. “It’s just a different kind of naivety.”
Thwack. Thwack.
The pain merged into a single, roaring blaze. Amy was sobbing openly now, her body rocking with each impact. It was brutal, and within the brutality was a terrifying kind of focus. Her world narrowed to the sound of her mother’s voice, the searing heat building in her backside, the cold cloth against her face. Every thought of Texas, of horses, of escape, was being burned away, replaced by this immediate, all-consuming sensation.
“You think I was hard on you?” Wendy’s breath was coming faster now. The board landed again, a scalding diagonal stripe across the landscape of fire. “Those Texas women… they won’t care about your tears. They won’t stop when you’re just pink. They’ll make you beg for mercy over a fence post. And you’ll have asked for it.”
The final blows were measured, deliberate, painting the entire surface with an even, punishing glow. Amy was limp, her cries reduced to wet, hitching breaths. The pain was a living thing, a throbbing, angry presence.
Finally, it stopped.
The only sounds were Amy’s ragged breathing and the faint hum of the city through the window. She felt the bed dip as her mother sat beside her. A warm hand, impossibly gentle, rested on her scorched back.
“Oh, my girl,” Wendy whispered. The sternness was gone, scraped raw. Her fingers brushed a damp braid from Amy’s cheek. “My brave, foolish girl.”
Amy couldn’t move. The aftershocks of pain rolled through her in waves, each pulse a vivid reminder of her body, of her submission, of a paradox she couldn’t name—how this could feel like both an ending and a claiming.
Wendy stood. Amy heard the board being placed back in the closet. The click of the latch was final.
Then, the scrape of a pen. Amy turned her head, wincing. Her mother was at the table, signing the papers in the envelope with quick, slashing strokes. She blotted them, slid them back inside, and placed the envelope neatly atop the suitcase.
She came back to the bedside. Her eyes were wet. She leaned down and kissed Amy’s forehead, her lips cool.
“It’s done,” Wendy said. She smoothed the hair from Amy’s brow. “Your adventure is waiting.”
She walked out, closing the bedroom door softly behind her.
Amy lay there for a long time, until the fire in her rear cooled to a fierce, satisfying ache. She pushed herself up, her movements slow and tender. She caught her reflection in the dark window—flushed face, swollen eyes, two messy blonde braids.
She reached back, her fingers lightly tracing the heated skin through the thin fabric. It was a map.A receipt. A goodbye.
She stood, walking carefully to the suitcase. She picked up the envelope, feeling the weight of the signed consent inside. Freedom had a price, and she could feel it singing in every nerve ending.
Pulling the suitcase behind her, she opened the bedroom door. The hallway was empty. The apartment was silent.
She stepped out.
