Chapter 1: A Wish Upon a Star: The First Tremors of Change
The cool night air brushed against John’s face as the last vestiges of the shooting star faded into the blackness. A faint, electric tingle lingered in his fingertips, a sensation he dismissed as fatigue. He rubbed his eyes, the weight of the day pressing down on him. From inside the sprawling mansion, the steady hum of the central air conditioning was the only sound, a stark contrast to the day’s chaos.
He slid the glass door open and stepped back into the quiet great room. Moonlight spilled across the polished marble floor, illuminating the evidence of his family’s relentless needs: Ashley’s discarded cheerleading uniform draped over a chair, a stack of Patricia’s medical newsletters on the coffee table, and the distinct, sweet smell of Sarah’s vanilla candle still hanging in the air. Normally, these remnants would fuel his resentment, but tonight, a strange stillness had settled over everything.
He climbed the grand staircase, his footsteps muffled by the plush runner. His first stop was Ashley’s room. He pushed the door open a crack. She was asleep, one arm flung above her head, her face smooth and untroubled. But something was different. The moonlit outline of her shoulder seemed… sharper. The delicate curve of her arm looked more defined, as if sculpted. He blinked, writing it off as a trick of the light.
Next, he peeked into Jessica’s room. She was curled on her side, usually so small in her queen-sized bed. The sheet was tangled around her legs, and he could see the taut line of her calf muscle, standing out in clear relief. It seemed more pronounced than it had been that afternoon when she’d asked him to carry her new books upstairs.
A low murmur came from down the hall. He followed the sound to the master suite. Mary was asleep, her blonde hair fanned across the pillow. She sighed in her sleep, and the duvet shifted. The outline of her body beneath the covers seemed more solid, more substantial. The softness of her upper arm had a new, firm contour. A faint, almost imperceptible warmth seemed to radiate from her. John felt a strange pull, an unfamiliar flush of attraction that felt deeper, more primal than the comfortable affection he was used to. He shook his head, attributing it to the late hour and his wandering mind.
He continued his silent rounds. In the guest wing, Susan was sprawled across her bed, a satisfied smile on her face even in sleep. Her posture was more expansive, claiming more space. And in the largest guest room, Patricia slept soundly, her breathing deep and even. For the first time in years, she wasn’t surrounded by pill bottles. Her skin, usually pale and thin, had a healthy glow under the moonlight.
Back in his in his and marys bed he falls asleep.
