Chapter 5: Poolside Revelations

The evening air was thick with the smell of chlorine and grilled meat. Laughter echoed from the pool where the girls splashed, their shrieks cutting through the humid twilight. John stood at the outdoor grill, a pair of tongs in his hand, focusing on the precise arrangement of hamburgers and hot dogs. It was easier than looking at the women.

Mary moved past him to grab a platter, her shoulder brushing his arm. It was a solid, deliberate contact. "Almost ready? The natives are getting restless," she said, her voice bright. Her new height allowed her to see directly over his head, and her smile held a new, proprietary warmth.

"Five minutes," he mumbled, flipping a burger with more force than necessary.

From the pool, Susan’s voice cut through the noise. "John, be a darling and grab us some towels? We're turning into prunes."

He nodded, grateful for the excuse to turn away. He grabbed a stack of thick, terrycloth towels from the patio table and walked toward the pool deck. The water shimmered under the string lights, distorting the shapes beneath the surface.

Susan and Patricia hauled themselves out of the deep end in a single, synchronized motion that sent a wave sloshing over the edge. Water sheeted off them, cascading in torrents from bodies that were no longer simply swimming-suited, but were instead monumental, carved from something denser than flesh.

John stopped dead, the towels heavy in his arms.

Patricia swept her blonde ponytail back, wringing out a startling volume of water. Her laugh was a young girl’s, but it came from a frame that was anything but. "Oh, that was invigorating! I haven't felt this good in years." She placed her hands on her hips, stretching, and the fabric of her one-piece strained across a midsection that was no longer soft but sharply defined, a sculpted core of sinew and power.

Susan shook her arms, one then the other, a motion that became a casual, grinning flex. Her biceps swelled, hard and round, the water beading and rolling off the scrubbed skin like it was waxed stone. "God, I'm starving. Those burgers smell amazing, John."

He couldn't move. He just stared, his drink from earlier turning to acid in his stomach.

Susan noticed his gaze and winked, sauntering toward him with a languid, powerful grace that made the concrete seem to vibrate. "See something you like?" she teased, her voice a low purr. She reached out and plucked a towel from the top of the pile he was clutching. Her forearm, corded and veined, brushed against his.

"I… the water," he stammered, his mind blank. "You got… all of it off."

She laughed, a rich, throaty sound, and began rubbing the towel over her hair. "What, this? Just a good shake. You know me, efficient." Her black eyes held his, the mischievous glint in them sharpening into something more appraisal. "You're looking a little peaked, Johnny. All this family fun too much for you?"

Patricia joined them, taking a towel with a murmured thanks. Her movements were fluid, effortless. She draped the towel around her shoulders, but it did little to hide the broad, powerful sweep of her back and the solid pillars of her legs. "He works too hard," Patricia said, her tone shifting into something maternal yet dominantly possessive. She reached out and patted his cheek, the gesture almost a caress, but her hand was so large, the pat so firm, it stung. "Our rock. Always looking after everyone. But who looks after you, hmm?"

Her gaze was intense, overly familiar, and brimming with a revitalized energy that felt dangerous. He could only stand there, trapped between the two of them, a slender man holding towels for giants.

Mary’s voice sliced through the moment. "Burgers are up!" she called from the grill, her tone cheerful yet carrying an undercurrent of something else—a subtle claim staked in the sizzle of meat.

Susan finally broke eye contact, giving John a final, lingering smile before turning toward the food. Patricia gave his arm a squeeze that was probably meant to be reassuring but felt like a warning.

"Come on, dear," she said, her voice sweet. "Let's get you something to eat. You need to keep your strength up."

He watched them walk away, their silhouettes against the lit pool massive and undeniable. Their denial was a perfect, impenetrable bubble. They saw only vitality, energy, a lucky renaissance. They didn't see the impossible geometry of their own bodies, the way they now dominated the space they moved through. He stood alone on the wet concrete, the remaining towels damp and useless in his hands, the humid air suddenly cold against his skin. The wish was no longer a quiet unease in the back of his mind; it was the very air he breathed, the water in the pool, the ground under his feet. It was everything.
