Jeanine wears a latex catsuit that gets permanently fused to her skin.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Jeanine's lab always had a weird ambiance to it, with its dim blue light illuminating ancient machinery. A hodgepodge of chemical containers, pipets, and other arcane devices cluttered redwood tables, and burners hissed quietly in the background. The acrid scent of uncommon substances singed her nostrils as she cursed yet another failed experiment.

She exhaled deeply, her annoyance perceptible through her clenched jaw as she vigorously rubbed her temples. A few droplets of sweat trickled from her brow, leaving streaks in the sooty shadows painted on her face.

Her gaze shifted to the sink brimming with soiled beakers and test tubes. She sighed, knowing she'd soon have to tackle the towering pile. But not just yet. Tonight still held promise. With a fresh pot of coffee, she could push on for at least a couple more hours.

After all, they never said making scientific breakthroughs was an easy task. Her thoughts wandered to her latest endeavor – a creation so extraordinary it terrified her on a level she had never known. A chemical concoction so potent that only the smallest exposure applied to latex caused an immediate, permanent bond between the synthetic material and a person’s flesh.

A small smile played on her lips as she sipped her coffee, shook her head, and returned to her work.

There was one aspect of her predicament that amused her, despite the acute embarrassment and pain. At first glance, she appeared to be a helpless, glistening mannequin that could be prodded and poked at will. An object of titillation, or worse, ridicule.

But that poetic image collapsed the instant one gazed deeper.

The latex costume encapsulating her was not some fashion statement or comic book gimmick. It had melted into her like liquid metal, every intricate thread indecipherable from her skin.

The weight of her predicament bore down on her, yet Jeanine wouldn't crumble under it. Her intellect had carried her through countless obstacles; this would be no different. Granted, this new hurdle was far more personal.

Hours bled into days as Jeanine tirelessly pored over every molecule that contributed to the vile concoction.

It’s been 2 days since it happened. She thinks back to what transpired.

It started with a seemingly innocent sequence of events – a beaker here, Bunsen burner there. She glanced over her notes, remembering the exact measurements of each compound before meticulously combining them within the vessel.

Suddenly, the room's energy shifted.

In the instant she added the fateful catalyst, her world splintered apart. The clear mixture beneath the glass vessel fractured and writhed. She had anticipated an intense reaction, but not the cataclysm transpiring before her eyes.

A monstrous bubble erupted, distending the fluid upward like a grotesque mushroom before collapsing, creating a vortex of unseen forces.

Searing chemical clouds billowed, billowing in all directions. She lunged to activate mandatory venting protocols, but before she could react, the vortex exploded – hurtling viscous latex shards against her lab suit. The scorching droplets splattered her forehead, her cheeks, her neck – no matter how vehemently she recoiled.

Her pained yelp echoed throughout the lab, but it quickly faded as the particles adhered to her face, then her arms, leaving a crimson trail that drained the life from her eyes.

She writhed, a desperate attempt to shuck the newfound burden, but her movements only served to facilitate its deadly embrace. Soon, the latex material had engulfed her entire body. Its cold, slick touch dashed through her nerves, solidifying into a permanent alloy with her flesh.

She could only stare disbelievingly as the translucent material snaked across her form, spreading like an unstoppable contagion, her mind echoing with panicked questions.

As Jeanine struggled to process the pain and panic, a sudden stillness overcame her. Time felt suspended as she tried cataloguing the extent of damage.

She looked at her gloved hands, her eyes widening as they traced upwards. This bizarre latex suit had absorbed her wedding band, the patterned skin on her fingers indiscernible from the slick surface.

Its icy tendrils had crawled along the pulsing veins beneath her fragile skin, a living entity.

With a Herculean effort, she steadied her quivering hands and focused on her breath. The suffocating panic ebbed, and a spark of determination rekindled inside her.

Between her gritted teeth, she whispered words of defiance for the seemingly endless torrent of trials to come.
