Chapter 7: Wedding night
The stiff lace collar of her wedding dress scratched Ella’s neck, a constant, irritating counterpoint to the forced smile plastered on her face. Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows of the little chapel, dappling James’s earnest, beaming face in hues of blue and gold. He squeezed her hands, his grip warm and slightly damp. "I do," he said, his voice thick with emotion, clear and strong in the hushed sanctuary.
Ella echoed the words, the phrase "husband and wife" ringing in her ears like a bell tolling. Applause erupted. James leaned in, his kiss chaste and sweet, tasting faintly of the champagne from the toast. She kissed him back, closing her eyes against the sudden, unwelcome image of fluorescent lights and a different, darker intensity.
The reception was a blur of well-meaning relatives, clinking glasses, and inedible cake. James’s hand rested on the small of her back, a proprietary touch that should have thrilled her but instead made her skin prickle. Every laugh felt brittle, every smile an effort. The memory of Ben’s hands, his mouth, the shocking, obliterating pleasure that had left her trembling on the exam table, surged back with terrifying clarity. It felt like a stain on her white dress, invisible to everyone but her.
"You okay, El?" James murmured as they swayed through their first dance, an old love song crooning from the speakers. His breath tickled her ear. "You seem a million miles away."
"Just… overwhelmed," she managed, forcing another smile, pressing her cheek against his. "Happy exhausted." Her body felt strangely hollow, a vessel filled with dread and illicit memories instead of bridal joy. The scent of his familiar cologne couldn't mask the phantom whiff of antiseptic that haunted her.
Later, in the hired car taking them to the hotel, James took her hand, interlacing their fingers. "Finally," he sighed, a smile playing on his lips. "Just us." His thumb stroked her knuckles. Ella’s stomach clenched. She looked out the window at the passing streetlights, their glow smearing like tears against the glass.
The hotel suite was lush, all soft carpets and rose petals scattered on the enormous bed. Romantic, cliché. James popped another bottle of champagne. "For us, Mrs. Henderson," he grinned, pouring two glasses. His eyes were bright with anticipation.
"Mrs. Henderson," she repeated, the name feeling alien. She took a gulp of champagne, the bubbles stinging her nose. She’d taken her pill religiously since… since after. The thought sent another wave of guilt crashing over her.
James set his glass down, his expression turning serious, tender. He stepped close, cupping her face. "Ella…" His voice was husky. "I know you waited. I love you so much for that. For trusting me. For saving yourself." He kissed her, deeper this time, his tongue seeking entrance. It was gentle, familiar. But it lacked the raw command, the overwhelming presence that had shattered her control.
His hands went to the tiny buttons at the back of her dress. Each one he fumbled open felt like the turning of a key in a lock she desperately wanted to stay shut. The dress pooled around her feet. She stood in her simple white lingerie, feeling exposed not just physically, but emotionally raw. James’s eyes widened, filled with pure, almost reverent admiration. "You’re beautiful," he breathed.
He undressed quickly, his movements eager. Ella kept her eyes fixed on his face, on the familiar lines of his jaw, his kind eyes. She couldn’t look down. Not yet. He guided her to the bed, laying her back against the pillows, his touch tentative, exploring. His fingers traced her collarbone, the curve of her breast, moving lower. His touch was… nice. Pleasant. But it was a gentle breeze compared to the hurricane she’d experienced. Her body remained stubbornly quiet, a traitorous echo of past sensation fluttering uselessly low in her belly.
"James…" she whispered, nerves tightening her throat.
"Shh, it's okay," he murmured, kissing her neck. "I'll be gentle. I promise." He shifted between her legs, his weight settling over her. She felt his erection press against her inner thigh. It was… there. Present. But the sheer, intimidating size, the overwhelming pressure she’d braced for based on her only other experience… it wasn’t there. Her mind, already clouded with guilt and memory, struggled to compute. It felt… different. Smaller. Softer.
He fumbled for a moment, his breathing quickening. Ella closed her eyes tightly, bracing. He pressed forward. There was a brief moment of pressure, a slight, surprising tightness that made her gasp softly. And then… he was inside her.
Oh.
It wasn’t pain. Not like she’d expected, not like the stretching, consuming fullness that had stolen her breath. It was… a presence. Relatively comfortable. Unremarkable. She could feel him, yes, but it didn’t fill her, didn’t push her boundaries, didn’t ignite that frantic, unbearable tension. It was simply… there.
James moaned above her, a low sound of pleasure mixed with relief. "Ella," he gasped. He began to move, shallow thrusts at first, then deeper. Each stroke was gentle, considerate. She felt the friction, the warmth, the intimacy of the act. It wasn’t unpleasant, exactly. But the coiled spring of anticipation deep inside her remained inert. She tried to kiss him back, to move with him, to summon the feelings she knew she should have – love, connection, passion. Instead, her mind was screamingly, horrifyingly clear.
This was what she'd saved herself for? This gentle rocking? This… adequacy? Where was the overwhelming pressure, the sense of being claimed, the friction that ignited sparks? Ben’s face, his intense green eyes locked on hers as he pushed into her with deliberate, devastating slowness, filled her vision. The memory of the pleasure that followed, the multiple, shattering peaks he’d wrung from her resistant body, rose up with brutal clarity, mocking the careful, tender motions of her husband.
She arched her back, trying to find an angle, any angle, that would spark something more than this polite sensation. A whimper escaped her – part frustration, part despair. James misinterpreted it. "Good?" he panted, thrusting harder, encouraged. "Oh god, Ella… you feel… I can’t…"
His rhythm stuttered. His thrusts became erratic, frantic. A few more jerky movements, a deep groan that seemed to come from his boots, and he shuddered violently against her. She felt the hot pulse deep inside, accompanied by a near-silent whimper from him as he collapsed onto her, panting heavily, his skin slick with sweat.
It was over.
He lay there for a long moment, breathing hard, his face buried in her neck. "Wow," he mumbled, his voice thick with spent emotion. "Ella… that was… wow. Perfect." He kissed her shoulder, a gesture of exhausted tenderness. "My wife."
Ella stared up at the ornate plasterwork on the hotel ceiling. Her body felt… unchanged. Unmoved. The slight ache between her legs was already fading. The desperate, clawing need that had been building since he entered her hadn't been satisfied; it had barely been acknowledged. It thrummed inside her, a low, persistent hum of disappointment and shameful longing. She felt no different. No transformation. Just… emptiness. And the vivid, unwelcome ghost of a different touch, a different man, a different kind of taking that had left her utterly broken and remade in ways she couldn’t forget.
James shifted, rolling off her with a contented sigh, already drifting towards sleep, one arm thrown possessively across her stomach. "Love you," he murmured, his voice slurring. "So much. G’night, Mrs. H. Practice makes perfect, right?" He chuckled softly at his own joke, his breathing deepening almost immediately.
Ella lay perfectly still. The silence of the expensive room pressed in. The rose petals felt like tiny, mocking bruises against her skin. She could still feel the faint, damp stickiness between her thighs. James. Her husband. Kind, decent James, who loved her virginity, who had been so gentle, who had finished so quickly believing he’d given her everything.
He began to snore softly.
A single, hot tear escaped the corner of her eye, tracing a slow path down her temple and disappearing into her hair. She didn’t move to wipe it away. She just kept staring at the ceiling, the pristine white expanse mirroring the hollow void inside her, while the phantom sensation of Ben Smith’s overwhelming possession echoed relentlessly in her traitorous flesh. The wedding night was over. And all she felt was a crushing, unspeakable want.
