Chapter 1: The Wall: A Line of Naked Shame
The crash wasn’t a sound; it was a physical force. The door to the dormitory exploded inward, and Jenny’s body jolted awake before her mind could catch up. Her heart was a frantic animal in her chest. Blinking against the sudden, brutal flood of fluorescent light, she saw them: figures in orange jumpsuits, shrouded in black body armor, faces hidden behind mirrored visors and masks. They looked like insects from a nightmare, methodical and silent except for the rustle of tactical gear and the heavy clack of their batons against their shields.
“Up! On your feet! Face the wall, hands behind your heads! Now!”
The voice was metallic, filtered, devoid of anything human. Around her, women scrambled, sheets tangling, soft cries stifled into whimpers. Jenny’s bare feet hit the frigid concrete floor. She fumbled, her sleep-addled fingers fumbling to obey, pressing her forehead against the cold cinderblock. She could feel the woman next to her shaking.
A gloved hand, impersonal as a tool, wrenched her arms behind her back. The plastic cuff snapped tight, biting into the delicate bones of her wrists. The pinch was a sharp, clarifying pain. This was real.
“Move. Single file. Eyes down.”
They were herded like livestock through the labyrinth of corridors. The air smelled of industrial cleaner and stale fear. The orange-clad figures flanked them, a wall of implied violence. Jenny’s eyes darted, taking in glimpses—a cadet, his face young and flushed with adrenaline, staring openly; an older officer with a bored smirk, his gaze lingering on the back of a woman’s thin nightgown. The fabric clung, revealing the sway of hips, the outline of panties beneath. Jenny felt a hot wave of shame, not for herself, but for all of them, for this exposed, vulnerable parade.
The gymnasium was a vast, echoing tomb. The lights buzzed with a constant, angry hum. The floor was slick in patches, reflecting the sickly yellow glow. They were lined up against the wall, shoulder to shivering shoulder. Jenny could feel the chill of the concrete seeping through her threadbare t-shirt and shorts. The air was thick, humid with the breath of two hundred terrified women, undercut by a coppery, organic scent she couldn’t immediately place. Menstrual blood. She saw it then—a discarded, saturated pad stuck to the floor near her foot, a rusty brown smear trailing from it. Her stomach turned.
“You! Group of four! To the barber shop! Now!”
Jenny was pushed forward with three others. One, a girl named Tasha who couldn’t be more than nineteen, was quietly hyperventilating. The barber shop was just an alcove, barely private, a space of stained sinks and peeling mirrors. Four men in orange stood there. One was Officer Davis. Jenny recognized the set of his jaw, the uncertain tightness around his eyes before the blank mask of duty settled back over them.
“Clothes off. All of them. On the floor.”
The command hung in the air. Jenny’s fingers, numb from the cuffs, fumbled with the drawstring of her shorts. The knot felt impossible. Tasha was faster, weeping openly as she peeled her shirt over her head. Her breasts, full and heavy, bounced free as she straightened. The nipples were tight and dark against her pale skin, puckering in the cold air. She crossed her arms over them, a futile gesture.
“Hands at your sides! Do not cover yourself!”
Jenny’s shorts and panties pooled at her ankles. She stepped out of them, the concrete gritty under her soles. The air kissed every part of her, a violation in itself. She stood, utterly exposed, trying to make her mind go blank, to retreat somewhere inside. She focused on a crack in the wall tile.
“Lift your hair. Turn your head. Cough.”
She obeyed, the cough tearing from her dry throat. Her breasts, small and high, jiggled with the motion. She felt the eyes on them, a tactile weight.
“Squat. Cough again.”
She lowered herself, muscles trembling. The position was obscenely open. She felt the cool air on her most intimate places, the lips of her vagina exposed. She coughed again, her face burning.
“Bend over. Spread your cheeks. Wider.”
Jenny bent at the waist, gripping her ankles. The world inverted. The floor, strewn with hair and dust, swam in her vision. She reached back with her cuffed hands, pulling the firm globes of her buttocks apart as commanded, exposing the tight, dark pucker of her anus and the glistening pink folds of her vagina to the cold, scrutinizing air. A low, crude chuckle came from one of the cadets.
“You see that? Looks like she’s done this before.”
Heat flooded her, a mixture of rage and utter degradation. She squeezed her eyes shut.
“Stand up. You, with the pad. Remove it.”
Jenny straightened, her body aching. The woman next to her, an older lady with streaks of gray in her hair, was bleeding heavily. She stood in a puddle of her own blood, which had soaked through her pad and stained her inner thighs.
“I… I don’t have another one,” the woman whispered, her voice shattered.
“Not my problem. Remove it. Now.”
With shaking, bloody fingers, the woman reached into her panties—the last garment she wore—and pulled out the sodden, crimson pad. She held it, dripping, unsure where to put it. A cadet wrinkled his nose.
“Christ, it stinks in here. Like death. You all smell like dirty bitches.”
“Just drop it,” Officer Davis said, his voice low, almost strained. The woman let it fall with a wet slap onto the pile of her clothes. She stood bare, blood slowly tracing a path down her leg. The sight was more violent than any punch.
“You think this is a show? Keep your mouths shut or you’ll all take a vacation in seg!” another officer barked, his voice ricocheting off the tiles.
Jenny was told to dress. She pulled her clothes on over her sticky, unclean skin, the fabric feeling foreign and abrasive. They were marched back to the gym wall. The line of women stretched on, a cycle of nakedness and humiliation repeating in the alcoves. The buzzing lights, the stench of sweat and blood, the low drone of commands and occasional bursts of degrading laughter—it all blended into a single, relentless assault.
Jenny leaned her head back against the wall, the cinderblock rough against her skull. Her body felt alien to her, a thing that had been catalogued and mocked. She watched Officer Davis move to the next group. His gloved hand gestured sharply. She saw his knuckles, white under the material, and the way he briefly, almost imperceptibly, turned his head away as a woman sobbed, struggling to remove her tampon. For a second, his eyes met Jenny’s across the crowded room. In that fleeting glance, she didn’t see a predator or a faceless guard. She saw a crack in the armor, a glimpse of a man drowning in the same vile atmosphere that was suffocating her.
Then he looked away, his voice hardening to match the others. “You heard the order. Bend over. Spread ‘em. Let’s see everything.”
The command echoed, and the line jostled forward again.
