Chapter 6: Resolution
The sun dipped low, casting an orange glow over the city as Zane sat on the weathered park bench. The quiet hum of the city was a stark contrast to the peaceful park, where the scent of blooming flowers filled the air. He could hear the distant hum of conversation from the nearby café, the clinking of glasses, and the soft laughter of patrons enjoying their evening. The bench, worn smooth by countless conversations, echoed with the unspoken words of his connection with Sasha.
Zane's heart was a symphony of emotions—relief, heartbreak, and a lingering unease that gnawed at him.
He had been sitting on this bench for hours now, waiting for Sasha's call, his phone clutched tightly in his hand. The sun was dipping low, casting an orange glow over the cityscape, and the park was now bathed in a soft, warm light.
The distant hum of conversation from the nearby café mingled with the soft laughter of patrons enjoying their evening. The clinking of glasses and the rustle of leaves in the breeze filled the air, but none of it could drown out the silence from Sasha's end of the line.
He had called and texted her countless times since their encounter with Emily, but each attempt was met with no response.
It was unlike Sasha to ignore him like this, and the longer she remained silent, the more his unease grew. He knew something was wrong, he could feel it in his bones. He just didn't know what to do about it.
He was about to give up and head home when he heard footsteps approaching. He turned to see a young woman walking towards him, her steps hesitant and uncertain. As she got closer, he recognized her as Sasha. Or really the remains of the woman he loved. Sasha was covered head to toe with bruises and cuts. She wore her arm in a sling and she hand a slight limp. Her beautiful face was hidden by big dark sunglasses to hide the black eyes and red makeup to hide to cuts on her soft lips.
"Mind if I sit down?" Sasha asked, her voice soft and timid.
She looked around the park, her eyes darting nervously from side to side as if she suspected someone was watching them.
Zane's heart leapt into his throat as he took in the state of her. He had known she was hurt, but seeing the evidence of Emily's rage up close was like a punch to the gut. He forced himself to keep his expression neutral, not wanting to scare her any further.
"Of course, Sasha. Have a seat," he said, his voice gentle and soothing. He patted the spot next to him on the bench, and she carefully sat down, keeping her distance from him.
Zane could see the fear and pain in her eyes, even through the dark sunglasses she wore. He wanted to reach out and touch her, to comfort her, but he knew better than to spook her.
"What happened, Sasha?" he asked softly, his voice filled with concern. He knew it had to be Emily, but he wanted to hear it from Sasha herself.
Sasha looked down at her hands, twisting the hem of her sweater in her fingers. She took a deep breath before speaking, her voice barely above a whisper. "Emily... she was upset with me after you left that night. I woke up two days later from the beating but I had to wait till it was safe to contact you again. Sorry it took a couple of weeks.” Sasha
Zane's heart sank, but he kept his expression neutral.
He wanted to wrap her in his arms, to protect her, but he knew better. He had to tread carefully, not scare her off.
"I'm so sorry, Sasha," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I should have been there for you. I should have protected you."
Sasha shook her head, tears welling up behind her dark sunglasses. "No, Zane. This isn't your fault. You can't protect me from her. No one can. She's...never gone this far. I think I actually fear for my life now."
Zane's jaw clenched, but he kept his voice steady.
"You can't stay with her like this, Sasha. This isn't love. This is abuse. You deserve better."
Sasha let out a shaky breath, her shoulders slumping. "I know, Zane. I know it is. But I'm scared. I don't know how to leave her. I don't want to end up like... like you described."
Zane's eyes narrowed, recalling the horrifying details of Sasha's past relationship. "You won't. I won't let that happen."
Sasha shook her head. "It's not that easy, Zane.
I'm trapped," Sasha whispered, her voice filled with desperation and fear. She looked around, her eyes darting nervously, as if expecting Emily to appear from the shadows.
Zane's heart ached for her, but he knew he had to be careful. He couldn't push too hard, not yet. He had to let her set the pace.
"I know it's not easy, Sasha. But you're not alone. You have me. And I'll do everything in my power to help you," Zane said, his voice filled with determination. He reached out slowly, gently placing his hand over hers.
"I mean it, Sasha. You're not alone in this. We'll figure something out together. Okay?"
Sasha looked down at their entwined hands, her fingers gripping his tightly. She took a deep, shuddering breath, her body trembling with the weight of her emotions. "I don't want to be without you, Zane. But I'm so scared. For both of us."
Zane squeezed her hand reassuringly. "I know you are, Sasha. And I'm scared too. But we can't let that fear control us. Your safety is top priority right now. We'll figure out the rest together. I promise." Zane's voice was firm and reassuring, his grip on Sasha's hand tightening just enough to convey his sincerity. He looked around the park, his eyes scanning the area for any sign of Emily. "Have you seen or heard from her since... since that night?"
Sasha shook her head slightly, her voice barely above a whisper. "Yes. Shes extra sweet and intense. I think she understands she may have went to far and trying to make sure I don’t reach out the police or get her in trouble." She paused, her breath hitching in her throat. "She promised she wouldn’t hurt like this again. Maybe she means it this time” Sasha whispered, her voice shaky. She looked down at her hands, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her sweater. "I don't know, Zane. I'm so confused. One minute, she's beating me to a pulp, and the next, she's apologizing and promising to change. I don't know what to believe anymore."
Zane's grip on Sasha's hand tightened, his heart aching for her. He knew he had to tread carefully, not push her away with his anger towards Emily. "I understand, Sasha. Abusers are known for their cycles of violence and reconciliation.
It's a cruel, manipulative tactic designed to keep their victims confused, hopeful, and ultimately, trapped. Sasha knew this all too well, yet here she was, falling prey to Emily's perverse version of a love song.
Zane knew he had to tread carefully. He couldn't just swoop in and rescue Sasha, not yet. He had to help her see the truth, the danger she was in. But first, he had to gain her trust, make her feel safe with him.
"Sasha, listen to me," Zane said, his voice low and steady, his eyes locked onto hers.
"You deserve better than this. You deserve to be loved and cherished, not feared and abused. I know you're scared, but you can't let that fear control you. You have to take control of your life and get out before it's too late."
Sasha looked away, her eyes welling up with tears. "I wish it were that easy, Zane. I really do. But I'm trapped. I can't just leave. I don't know how."
Zane's heart ached as he watched her struggle.
He knew he had to be careful, not push her too hard, but he also couldn't just sit back and do nothing. "Sasha, I understand that you're scared. But you have to believe me when I say that this will only get worse if you don't get out now. Emily is unpredictable and dangerous. She could hurt you again, or worse. You can't trust her promises of change. Abusers rarely change unless they are forced to."
Sasha looked back at him, her eyes filled with tears and uncertainty. "But where would I go, Zane? I have nowhere to go. No money, no family...
I don't know anyone who would take me in..." Sasha's voice trailed off, her shoulders slumping as she stared at the ground, her heart heavy with the weight of her reality.
Zane's heart broke for her. He could see the surrender in her eyes, the belief that she was truly trapped in her situation. He couldn't stand the thought of her living in fear, always looking over her shoulder, waiting for the next blow to fall. He had to make her see that there was a way out, that she didn't have to live like this forever.
"Look at me, Sasha," Zane said, his voice gentle yet firm.
He leaned in closer, his eyes locked onto hers. "You have me. And you have my resources. I can help you get out of this situation. I can help you start over."
Sasha looked up at him, her eyes filled with a mix of hope and fear. "You would do that for me? Even after everything that's happened?"
Zane nodded, his expression serious. "Yes, Sasha. I care about you. And seeing you like this, knowing that you're in danger... it breaks my heart. I want to help you.
I can't stand the thought of you living in fear, always looking over your shoulder, waiting for the next blow to fall. I won't let that happen, Sasha. Zane's voice was filled with sincerity and determination. He reached out and cupped Sasha's cheek, his thumb brushing away a stray tear that had slipped down her face.
Sasha leaned into his touch, her eyes searching his face. She could see the truth in his eyes, the sincerity in his voice. But she was still afraid, still unsure of how to escape the tangled web of her marriage.
"But what about Emily? She will definitely kill me this time if she finds out” Sasha whispered, her voice barely audible. Her eyes were wide with fear, her body tense as if she was expecting Emily to jump out of the bushes at any moment.
"Shh, it's going to be okay," Zane whispered, his voice soothing and calm. He rubbed her back gently, trying to coax her to relax. "We'll be careful, okay? We'll make a plan, and we'll make sure you're safe. You won't have to go back to her, I promise."
Sasha looked up at him, her eyes filled with doubt and fear. "It’s no use. I can’t put you in harms way like that. If she even catches me here with you right now I’m sure it will be the death of me. I can’t let you risk it all for someone like me. A disloyal whore…im useless” Sasha 's voice trembled, her words echoing her self-loathing and fear.
Zane’s eyes darkened with anger and concern. He could see the self-doubt and pain etched on her face. He gripped her shoulders gently, his voice firm yet gentle.
"Listen to me, Sasha. You are not a disloyal whore. You are a victim of abuse. Emily has manipulated and controlled you, made you believe that you are not worthy of love, not worthy of a good life. But I see you, Sasha. I see your strength, your intelligence, your creativity.
You are so much more than what Emily has made you believe. And I am not going to let her take that away from you." Zane's voice was firm and steady, his eyes locked onto hers, willing her to believe him.
Sasha looked up at him, her eyes filled with tears and disbelief. "You really see that in me? Even after all this?" she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.
Zane nodded, his thumb brushing away another tear that slipped down her cheek. “I see it. I've always seen it. And I want to help you see it too. Please let me help you” Zane said, his voice filled with sincerity and determination. He reached out and took her hand in his, squeezing it gently to emphasize his point.
Sasha looked down at their entwined hands and let out a shaky breath. She wanted to believe him, to trust him, but the fear and doubt that Emily had instilled in her ran deep. She took her hand back and placed it gently back in her lap.
“I can’t do this Zane. I love you so much. You have shown me a side of myself that I had thought long gone. I will always be thank for that but I would never forgive myself if something happened to you because of me. I am nothing.” Sasha said looking down at her bruised legs and hands that riddled with defensive wounds.
“ You're not nothing, Sasha,” Zane said, his voice firm. He took her hands in his, forcing her to look at him.
“Emily has made you believe that you're nothing, that you're worthless. But that's not true. You are so much more than that. You have strength, intelligence, creativity. You have a heart as big as an ocean. And you love fiercely. That's not nothing. That's everything.”
Sasha's eyes welled up with tears. She wanted to believe him, to trust him. But the fear and self-doubt that Emily had instilled in her were like shackles around her soul.
She pulled her hands away from Zane's, wrapping them around her knees instead. "It's too late, Zane. I'm already in too deep. I can't just leave her. I can't risk it."
Zane's heart ached as he watched Sasha withdraw into herself, her words laced with resignation and fear. He knew he had to be patient, to give her the time and space she needed to come to terms with the reality of her situation. But he also knew that he couldn't just let her go that easily. After all she was probably the love of his life and she just told him she loved him too. That was worth fighting for. Worth waiting for if need be.
Zane's heart ached as he watched Sasha pull away from him, both physically and emotionally. He knew she was scared, and he understood her fear, but he also knew that he couldn't let her go without a fight.
"You're right, Sasha," he said, his voice soft yet determined. "You can't just leave her.
I get it. But I want you to know that I am always here for you. You make me feel something I have I never felt before and I’m not giving that up. You are the love of my life and I will wait for you for as long it takes," Zane said, his voice filled with emotion and determination. He reached out and took her hand in his, squeezing it gently, his eyes locked onto hers.
Sasha looked up at him, her eyes filled with tears. She felt a spark of hope ignite within her, but it was quickly extinguished by the reality of her situation. "I want to believe you, Zane. I want to be with you. I don't want anything to happen to you because of me. I can't let that happen."
Zane's thumb brushed away the tears streaming down her cheeks. "Don’t worry my love. I will be just fine. I was saving this for our first anniversary or when you left…never mind the reason. Please take this.” Zane reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet pouch. He opened it to reveal a beautiful pendant necklace, the pendant shaped like a delicate rose, crafted from silver and adorned with a single, sparkling gemstone. The chain was long and elegant, designed to lie flat against the skin.
Sasha looked down at the necklace, her eyes wide with surprise and wonder. "Zane, this is... it's beautiful," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.
Zane smiled gently, his thumb brushing away another tear from her cheek. "Look at the engraving on the back” he said, holding the pendant up for her to see. Sasha tilted her head to read the words etched onto the silver: 'You are not too much, you are not too small. You are enough.'
Sasha's breath hitched as she looked up at Zane, her eyes filled with fresh tears. "It's...it's perfect, Zane," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "Thank you."
Zane carefully took the pendant and placed the chain around her neck, fastening the clasp at the nape of her neck. He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss against her collarbone, right above the pendant.
"I want you to remember that, Sasha. Every day, when you look at this pendant, I want you to remember that you are enough. You are strong, you are brave, and you deserve to be loved and cherished. Not hurt and abused."
Sasha's fingers gently touched the pendant, a small smile playing at the corners of her mouth. "I will, Zane.
Zane pulled back and looked at her, his eyes filled with concern and determination. "I want you to keep this in a safe place. Use it on days you think you can’t keep going. Keep this with you always until we can be together again. I love you Sasha. And I'll wait for you. However long it takes. Zane's voice was steady and sure, his eyes never leaving hers. He watched as Sasha looked down at the pendant, her fingers tracing the delicate petals of the rose.
"I love you too, Zane," she whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears. "I love you so much it hurts. But I can't...I can't put you in danger like this. I won't risk it."
Zane's expression softened, but his resolve didn't waver. “Don’t worry I get it. I’ll leave you alone if that’s what you want. Just know I’m always a little phone or text away.” Zane said getting up to leave, trying to hide his own tears from falling . This was the last thing he wanted but he knew he had to respect her wishes.
“ Zane, please don’t go.” Sasha pleaded in a small voice as she saw him stand up.
“ Zane, I’m so sorry. I can’t keep seeing you like this. It’s too painful. I never want to hurt you.” Sasha said, a fresh wave of tears streaming down her cheeks.
Zane stopped in his tracks and turned back to face Sasha. He knelt down in front of her and took her hands in his. “Sasha, I’m not leaving because I’m mad or hurt.
I’m leaving because you need time to sort out your thoughts and feelings. I won’t push you, but I also can’t stand by and watch you self-destruct. You need space, and that’s okay. I’ll be here when you’re ready, and that’s a promise.”
Tears spilled down Sasha’s face, and she nodded in understanding. “I know, Zane. It’s just...this is all so hard. I care about you so much, and the thought of hurting you—”
“You’re not hurting me,” Zane interrupted gently. “You’re protecting yourself, and that’s okay.
I just want you to be safe and happy, Sasha. That’s all that matters to me.” Zane’s voice was soft, filled with concern and understanding. He squeezed her hands gently, his eyes locked onto hers.
Sasha took a deep, shuddering breath, her body trembling with the weight of her emotions. “I just…I want you to know how much I care about you, Zane. How much I love you. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, even if it’s all so complicated.”
Zane’s heart ached as he watched her struggle, her words laced with pain and uncertainty.
He gently wiped away the tears from her cheeks with his thumbs.
“Sasha, I know this is hard. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever faced too. But we’ll get through this together. You and me, we’re a team. And together, we can overcome anything. But right now, you need to take care of yourself. Get safe, get healthy, and then we’ll figure out the rest. Okay?”
Sasha nodded slowly, her eyes filled with unshed tears. “Okay,” she whispered.
Zane gave her hands one last squeeze before letting them go. “Remember what I said.
You're enough, Sasha. You deserve better, and I'll be here when you're ready,” Zane said softly before standing up. He looked at her one last time, his heart aching, before turning and walking away.
Sasha watched him go, her heart heavy with a mix of love and pain. She clutched the pendant tightly in her hand, the weight of it a reminder of Zane's words and his love for her.
