Chapter 3: The Rooftop Reckoning

The Innovator of the Year trophy sat alone on the small table, catching fractured shards of light from the lounge chandeliers. It looked absurdly small now, insignificant against the weight pressing down on Sara’s chest. David’s hand on her elbow, guiding her towards a discreet side door marked ‘Terrace Access’, felt like a brand. "Come on, Sara," he murmured, his voice a low, reasonable hum designed for eavesdroppers. "Fresh air. Clear the air too, maybe? That was… intense back there. Tempers flared. Nobody’s best moment." His smile was conciliatory, practiced. "Just a chat. Away from the prying eyes."

Charly’s worried face flashed in her periphery, then vanished as David smoothly steered her through the door and into a dimly lit service corridor. The lounge’s warm buzz died instantly, replaced by the hollow echo of her heels on concrete and the distant hum of HVAC systems. Cold air, laced with the city’s metallic tang, hit her face as he pushed open the heavy fire door at the corridor's end.

The rooftop terrace yawned before them – a vast expanse of polished concrete under a canopy of twinkling fairy lights strung erratically between ventilation units. The city sprawled below, a glittering carpet stretching to the horizon, indifferent and vast. The air up here was cooler, thinner, carrying the faint scent of exhaust and distant rain. It felt less like an escape and more like exposure.

"Breathe," David suggested, releasing her arm but positioning himself casually between her and the door. He lit a cigarette, the flare of the lighter briefly illuminating the calculating glint in his eyes. "Richard talks a big game. Always has. Don’t let his bluster get under your skin. You won, Sara. That’s the undeniable fact." He gestured towards the city view. "Impressive, isn’t it? Makes you feel powerful. Or small. Depends on the night."

Sara hugged herself, the silk of her dress suddenly flimsy against the rooftop chill. The isolation was palpable. The muffled sounds of the party below felt miles away. "Where is this clearing the air leading, David? Because it feels less like fresh air and more like… isolation." Her voice was tight, wary.

A shadow detached itself from behind a large air conditioning unit. Richard. He moved towards them with the unhurried confidence of a man on his own territory, a fresh brandy snifter in hand. The dim light sculpted the deep lines of his face, making his expression unreadable. "Not isolation, Sara," he corrected smoothly, his voice cutting through the quiet. "Privacy. David thought, quite rightly, that we might benefit from a less… public setting for a more candid conversation."

David nodded, blowing a plume of smoke towards the night sky. "Exactly. Things got heated. Misunderstandings piled up. We’re all professionals here." He took another drag. "Richard apologized for before. Didn’t you, Richard?"

Richard’s smile was thin, predatory. "Indeed. My remarks were perhaps… indelicate. Provoked by the passion of the moment." He stepped closer, the scent of expensive tobacco and brandy preceding him. "But passion is good. Shows fire. Shows… potential." His gaze swept over her, lingering. "Your 'GreenScape' campaign. It was safe. Pleasant. But seeing you stand up for it like that…" He chuckled softly. "It sparked something else entirely."

Sara took an involuntary step back. Her heel scraped on the concrete. The city lights stretched dizzyingly below the low railing a few feet behind her. "I didn't come up here for a re-evaluation of my work, Richard. Or for cryptic compliments."

"Of course not," David interjected smoothly, stubbing out his cigarette on the concrete ledge. He moved subtly to her other side. Now she stood bracketed between them, the railing at her back. The space felt claustrophobic despite the open sky. "We just want to understand you better, Sara. The firebrand. The innovator." He nodded towards Richard. "Richard has connections. Influence. He sees something raw. Untapped. Maybe misdirected, but… potent."

Richard was inches away now. She could see the faint network of broken capillaries on his cheeks, the cold appraisal in his eyes. "David’s right," he murmured, his voice a low thrum. "That confrontation downstairs… the anger… the defiance. It’s a different kind of power. A primal one. Very… appealing." He reached out, not touching her, but his finger traced a line in the air just above the curve of her shoulder. Sara flinched. "That kindergarten mural jibe. It hit a nerve, didn’t it? Made you want to prove something. To fight." His eyes locked onto hers. "That fight… that energy… it’s incredibly arousing."

The mask was off. The veiled insults had hardened into something explicit, dangerous. Sara’s breath hitched. "Don’t touch me." Her voice was a rasp, stripped of its earlier defiance by sudden, chilling fear.

David chuckled, a low, ugly sound. "See? There it is again. That spark." He shifted closer, cutting off her path to the left. "Richard appreciates strong women, Sara. Women who aren’t afraid to get… dirty. To feel."

Richard’s hand finally landed, large and heavy, on her shoulder. His grip tightened. "You don’t belong in the safe, pleasant world you design for, do you?" he breathed, his brandy-laden breath hot against her cheek. "Deep down. You crave the edge. The real game."

Panic, cold and sharp, lanced through her. She tried to twist away, but Richard’s grip was like iron. David’s hand clamped onto her other arm. "Get OFF me!" she spat, twisting violently. Her elbow connected with something soft – David’s stomach. He grunted, his grip momentarily loosening, but Richard hauled her back, slamming her against the cold metal railing. Her spine jarred against it.

"Feisty!" Richard growled, a flash of something feral in his eyes. He shoved her harder against the railing, the top edge digging painfully into her lower back. David recovered instantly, grabbing her flailing wrist and pinning it against the railing beside her head. His other hand clamped over her mouth, stifling her scream. The taste of his skin, salty and vaguely chemical, filled her mouth. She bit down hard.

"Fucking bitch!" David hissed, jerking his hand away. He glanced at the teeth marks, then back at her with pure venom. Before she could draw breath, Richard’s free hand yanked at the neckline of her dress. Fabric tore. The cool night air hit her exposed collarbone, her shoulder.

"Wanted attention, didn't you?" Richard sneered, his face inches from hers, his eyes raking down her exposed skin. "Wanted to make a scene. Well, here it is." His other hand, the one not pinning her wrist, slid down her hip, gripping the fabric of her skirt. With a brutal wrench, he pulled it upwards, bunching it around her waist. The rough concrete scraped her bare thighs.

Sara bucked, kicked, a guttural sound of terror and fury tearing from her throat, muffled by David’s renewed grip over her mouth, pressing harder this time, his fingers digging into her jaw. Tears of rage and helplessness blurred the fairy lights. The city below swam, a vertiginous abyss.

David leaned in, his voice a harsh whisper against her ear, his breath hot and reeking of nicotine and bourbon. "Shut. The fuck. Up. Or you go over. Just a tragic accident. Tipsy winner, leaned too far." His knee jammed between her thighs, forcing her legs apart. She felt his erection, hard and insistent, press against her hip through his trousers.

Richard’s fingers, cold and thick, fumbled at the waistband of her underwear. He tore at the lace, the sound obscenely loud in the sudden silence. His rough fingertips scraped over her bare stomach, then lower, delving between her legs with bruising force. There was no finesse, only invasion. He probed roughly, finding her completely dry, the touch abrasive and shocking. Sara gasped against David’s hand, nausea rising in her throat.

"Tight," Richard grunted, a sickening note of pleasure in his voice. He worked a thick finger inside her, stretching unprepared flesh. The pain was sharp, immediate. She cried out, the sound choked against David’s palm, her body arching involuntarily against the intrusion. "Fight all you want, darling. Makes it better." He added a second finger, scissoring them brutally. Tears streamed down Sara’s face, mixing with sweat.

Richard withdrew his fingers, glistening with her forced wetness. He fumbled with his own trousers, the rasp of his zipper cutting through the air. David shifted his weight, his hand still clamped over her mouth, his other hand now grabbing her free arm, pinning it too. Sara was immobilized, bent backwards over the railing, the dizzying city lights her only witness.

Richard spat into his palm, slicking himself, his erection springing free, thick and veined. He positioned himself between her forcibly spread legs. Sara squeezed her eyes shut, a silent scream trapped in her chest. She felt the blunt, insistent pressure of him against her entrance. He pushed, hard. There was a tearing sensation, a white-hot lance of agony as he forced his way into her unprepared body. She felt obscenely full, violated, the friction unbearable.

"Oh fuck, yeah," Richard groaned, his voice thick with exertion and lust. He thrust deeply, burying himself inside her with a grunt. "Tighter than I thought. Good little fighter." He began to move, hard, shallow jabs at first, then deeper, more rhythmic strokes, each one a fresh assault. The railing slammed into Sara’s back with every thrust, jarring her spine. David held her firmly, his face a mask of grim determination, watching Richard’s assault, his own breathing harsh.

Sara’s world narrowed to the pain, the overwhelming sense of invasion, the cold metal at her back, the hands pinning her, and the rhythmic, grunting sounds Richard made. She felt split open. Degraded. The fairy lights above blurred into streaks. She dissociated, floating somewhere above the pain, the city lights merging into a cold, distant sea. The "Innovator of the Year" was gone. Replaced by a thing pinned against a railing, being used.

Richard’s pace grew frantic. His grunts became guttural moans. "Take it, you stubborn cunt," he rasped, slamming into her harder. "Take it all." He gripped her hips, fingers digging into her flesh, pulling her onto him with brutal force. He gave one final, deep, shuddering thrust, burying himself to the hilt, and groaned, a low, animal sound as he emptied himself inside her. He stayed there for a moment, panting, his weight heavy against her, his softening cock still lodged inside her violated body.

He pulled out abruptly, the sudden emptiness almost as shocking as the invasion. A wet, sticky warmth trickled down her inner thigh. He zipped himself up with a satisfied sigh, adjusting his jacket, barely glancing at her.

But they are not done.
