Chapter 1: The Threshold of Physical Transformation
The hub hummed with a low, tidal thrum that vibrated up through the soles of Vera's shoes. She paced the circular room's perimeter, her steps quick and deliberate, the matte fabric of her leggings whispering with each pivot. The others were still. Sanne leaned against the curved wall by her terminal, one finger tracing the edges of a glowing dial. Nia stood at the central console, head tilted, reading a cascade of data.
"It's got an endurance multiplier," Vera said, tapping her screen. "Goes up to twelve on the labor curve. I'm taking the whole thing." She looked up. "You sure you want to drag it out that long?"
Sanne smiled without turning from her own display. Her sweater dress pooled around her hips, soft cream against the room's cold steel. "Nine months is the whole point, Vera. I want to watch it happen." She adjusted the dial, then adjusted it again. "Slowly. Every week of it."
"You'll get thirty seconds of actual progression," Nia said, not looking up. "Time dilation is set for baseline realism. Nine months of waiting, then the squeeze."
"That's what I want." Sanne's voice was quiet, almost reverent. She pressed her palm flat against her stomach. "The waiting is part of the art."
Vera snorted. "Art. Right." She kept pacing, her hands flexing at her sides. The silver rings on her fingers caught the overhead light, glinting in short, sharp bursts. "I'm not here to paint a picture. I want to earn it."
The console pulsed beneath Nia's hands as she entered the synchronization sequence. Her bun held tight and high, her gold hoop flickering as she moved her head. She read the confirmation prompts, her jaw set. "Earn what? The delivery?" She paused. "The recovery?"
"The total collapse," Vera said. "The moment your body just decides it's done. When it takes over and you can't fight it anymore." She stopped pacing and planted her hands on her hips. "That's the finish line. I'm going for the longest labor on record."
Nia glanced at her, one eyebrow raised. "You know the record is subjective, right? It's calibrated to your pain tolerance."
"Then I'll tolerance the hell out of it."
A soft laugh from Sanne, barely audible over the thrum. She had turned from the dials now, facing the center of the room. Her expression was dreamy, her fingers still resting on her belly. "I'm setting mine for a single. Full term. Natural progression."
"What's your gestation set to, Nia?" Sanne asked.
Nia turned from the console. "Triplets. High-risk parameters. Organ compression set to maximum, pelvic pressure elevated, restricted breathing." She delivered the list flatly, like a grocery order. "I want the full physiological event. Not the clean version."
Vera blinked. "That's extreme."
"Extreme is the point." Nia's hands moved over the console, quick and precise. "Thrill-seeking, remember? I want to feel my organs shift. I want to know what it's like to carry that much weight, close to the limit of what a body can handle." She looked up, and for a moment her focus left the screens and landed on her friends. "Three of them. Pushing from the inside."
Sanne ran her hand along the wall, her silver bracelet chiming softly. "That's a lot of weight."
"I know." Nia's smile was thin, sharp. "That's why I'm taking it."
The console chimed. A warm amber light filled the hub, moving over the walls in a slow pulse. Nia straightened, and the room seemed to hold its breath. The thrum deepened, settling lower, like a second heartbeat in the floor.
"All parameters locked," Nia said. "Synchronization is live." She looked between them. "Everyone locked in?"
Vera nodded, rolling her shoulders. "Locked."
Sanne pressed her palm flat against the wall, steadying herself. "Locked."
Nia turned back to the console and laid her hand flat on the confirmation plate. The surface hummed against her skin, then went warm. A deep, resonant chime filled the space, and the amber light shifted to a soft, charged violet.
The pressure came first.
It gathered in the center of the room, dense and invisible, like the weight of a storm before rain. It pressed against them from all sides, closing in, then settled. It sank into their bodies, found the deep soft tissue, the hollows. Nia felt it behind her ribs. Sanne felt it low in her pelvis. Vera felt it at the base of her spine, a tightening coil she recognized from the last rep of a brutal set.
They looked at each other.
Sanne's hand had moved, almost without her permission, to the curve of her stomach. Her eyes were wide.
"That was quick," she whispered.
The violet light pulsed again, stronger. The pressure deepened, wrapped into their cells, and began to build.
The violet light pulsed again, stronger. The pressure deepened, wrapped into their cells, and began to build.
Time moved in a slow, deliberate slide. The hub's ambient hum shifted, dropping an octave, and the walls seemed to breathe. Sanne swayed on her feet, her hand pressed to her belly. Vera rolled her wrists, cracking her knuckles, her gaze fixed on the dark glass of her own terminal.
Nia stood very still at the console, her hand still flat on the confirmation plate. She felt the pressure settle behind her ribs first, a dull, persistent weight. Then it moved lower, pooling in her pelvis, dense and heavy as poured sand.
She drew a careful breath. The air caught halfway down.
"Okay," she said quietly, "that's the compression. Give it a second."
But the second did not come. The pressure gathered instead, and the violet light surged.
Her abdomen tightened.
It happened without warning, a deep, rolling clench that seized the whole width of her torso. Nia's breath punched out of her. Her knees buckled, caught herself on the console's edge with both forearms. The slate-grey bodysuit, form-fitting a moment ago, suddenly strained along her midsection. The fabric hugged a new contour, a swelling curve that had not been there before.
"Nia." Vera was across the room in three strides. "Nia, what the hell."
Nia couldn't answer. She was staring down at herself. The curve of her belly was filling, rounding outward, the high-stretch weave of her suit pulling taut over the growing mass. It was not a slow swelling. It was a tide, rising visibly, second by second. Her lower back arched under the weight, and a deep, grinding pressure settled into her hips.
"Triplets," she managed, her voice thin. "That's the first push."
Sanne had come closer, her cream sweater catching the violet light. Her fingers brushed Nia's arm, a light, careful touch. "Can you feel that?"
Nia nodded, her jaw tight. She pressed a hand flat against her own stomach, and jumped. The surface beneath her palm was firm, drum-tight, and warmer than her skin. She could feel the strain of it, the dense packing of flesh and bone and life pressing outward against her abdominal wall. Her breathing went shallow, forced into the top of her lungs.
"This is stage one," she said, but her voice wavered. "Organ displacement. They're already settling in."
Vera crouched beside her, close enough to see the fine tremor running through Nia's forearms. Her competitive edge had softened into something more wary. "Your setting was too high. You changed the calibration."
"I said maximum."
"You said you wanted the feeling of your organs shifting. Not your organs actually relocating."
Nia laughed, a short, sharp sound that cut off as her belly gave another deep, rhythmic clench. The curve swelled another inch, tighter still, and she braced herself against the console with both hands. The weight was real, impossibly real, dragging at her spine and settling low and heavy in her pelvis. She felt the pressure against her bladder, against her diaphragm, against the underside of her ribs.
"Okay," she breathed. "Okay. That's... a lot of weight."
Sanne was watching her with wide, wondering eyes. Her own belly was still soft, unchanged, but her hand rested on it as if in sympathy. "You're carrying three. How much mass is programming in?"
The question hung in the air. Nia opened her mouth to answer, and then her entire abdomen gave a long, deep, rolling contraction. The tightness overwhelmed her. She bent forward at the waist, bracing her elbows on her knees, and the pain was hot and heavy and all around her. The bodysuit's seams creaked audibly.
Vera's hand landed on her shoulder. "Talk, Nia."
"She's nineteen weeks at the jump." Nia forced the words out through the contraction. "Three infants. At peak density." She exhaled, long and slow, and the tightness eased a fraction. She straightened, and the new weight settled lower, swaying her hips. "We're accelerating to term over the next twenty minutes."
Sanne's eyes went wide. "Twenty minutes."
"Unless I adjust." Nia's hand moved toward the console, but she paused halfway, her fingers hovering over the calibration dial. She looked down at herself, at the heavy, taut crescent of her belly straining beneath the grey fabric, and something flickered in her expression. Uncertainty, maybe. Or hunger.
She left her hand where it was, hovering but uncommitted.
"Not yet," she said quietly. "Let me feel this a little longer."
The moment stretched. Nia's hand stayed where it was, trembling an inch above the dial. Then she pulled it back and pressed it flat against the swelling curve of her belly instead.
"Leave it," she said. "I want the full run."
Vera opened her mouth to argue, but Nia's breath hitched. A new sensation rolled through her, lower and different from the deep, grinding heaviness in her pelvis. It started behind her ribs, a tight, spreading pressure, then moved forward and down. Her bodysuit, already strained over her abdomen, suddenly went taut across her chest.
Sanne saw it first. Her hand came up to her mouth. "Nia. Your, your chest."
Nia looked down. The slate-grey fabric was pulling across her breasts, the high-stretch weave glowing faintly white where it was stretched thinest. The mounds were rising, filling, pushing outward in a steady, visible swell. She felt the skin grow warm, then hot. The weight settled on her sternum, dense and pendulous, and she watched the fabric dimple at her nipples as they hardened against the straining weave.
"That's the lactation architecture," she managed, and her own voice sounded strange to her, thicker. "Rapid cell division. They said it would be fast, but this is, oh. Oh."
The growth did not stop. Her breasts swelled another inch, then another, settling into a heavy, unfamiliar heft. The bodysuit's neckline cut into her collarbone, and the fabric over her chest went translucent with tension. She could feel every new inch of tissue, dense and warm, building cell by cell beneath her skin. Her body answered it with a deep, liquid pulse low in her belly, a pull of arousal she had not expected.
Her cheeks flushed. She pressed one hand to her sternum, felt the warm weight of her breast fill her palm. The touch sent a jolt through her, sharp and electric.
"Holy shit," Vera said softly. She was staring, her competitive stillness cracked into something more openly amazed. "It's still growing."
"It's not supposed to be this, this much." Nia's fingers curled against the fabric. "That's the high-risk setting. It's built for triplets. Full supply." She swallowed, and the motion made her chest rise against her hand, heavy and full. "I didn't think it would feel like this."
"You okay?" Sanne asked, coming closer. Her voice was careful, gentle. "You look, flushed. Are you getting a fever?"
Nia shook her head. The motion made her breasts shift, and she felt the weight rock against her ribs, a warm, sloshing pressure. Her skin was burning. Between her thighs a deep, rhythmic ache had started, wet and insistent, keeping time with the slow pulse of the violet light.
"Not a fever," she said, and her voice came out rough. "Just, the stimulation. The program is mimicking the full physiological response. It's building everything, the tissue, the supply, the, the sensitivity."
Her fingers pressed deeper into her own breast, and a low sound escaped her, barely a breath. Vera's eyebrows shot up. Sanne's wide eyes had gone very still.
"Nia," Vera said slowly. "You're not just calibrating anymore."
"I know." Nia's hand curled into the fabric, tugging it away from her damp skin. Her nipple dragged against the weave and her breath caught again. The heat between her legs was growing, a heavy pulse she could not ignore. She looked down at herself, at the heavy shelf of her breasts and the huge, straining curve of her belly, and felt something turn over in her, a raw, hungry want.
"This program," she said, and her voice was hardly steady, "it's building everything. Every part of me. And apparently I'm, I'm responding to all of it."
Sanne stepped closer, close enough to touch. Her hand hovered over Nia's arm. "Do you want us to stop it?"
Nia's eyes went dark. Her fingers tightened on the fabric at her chest.
"No," she said. "I want to feel this. All of it. I want to know what it's like to be this, this full. This ready." She looked between them, her breathing uneven. "Don't slow it down."
Nia's hand tightened on her chest. The heat between her thighs was a steady, wet pulse now, demanding. She looked at the others, her eyes dark and glassy.
"Actually," she said, her voice rough, "I could really use a cock inside me."
The violet light pulsed. A section of the far wall shimmered, then parted. A figure stepped through the glow, tall and golden-skinned, wearing a simple charcoal silk robe. His dark eyes held a still, patient focus.
Thorn moved toward them with an unhurried grace. The robe hung open at his chest, revealing smooth, sculpted planes of warm-toned muscle. He stopped before Nia, close enough that she could feel the subtle warmth radiating from his skin.
"How would you like it?" he asked, his voice low and even.
Nia's throat worked. She looked up at him, then at the heavy curve of her belly, then back at his face.
"Suspended in the air," she said. "Fuck me from behind."
Thorn nodded, a single, composed motion. "Hold still."
His hands came to her waist. The slate-grey bodysuit was still straining over her belly, translucent at the chest, damp between her breasts. His fingers found the seams at her hips and pulled. The fabric peeled away from her skin in a single smooth sheet, leaving her bare. The cool air hit her swollen breasts, her tender nipples, and she gasped at the sensation.
Thorn lifted her.
He did it with one arm under her thighs and one at her back, raising her as if she weighed nothing. Her heavy belly pressed against his chest, warm and tight, and she felt the strain in her own spine ease as her weight left her feet. He turned her, positioning her with her back against him, her legs spread wide across his forearms. Her hands found his shoulders, gripping the warm skin.
"Ready?" he asked.
"Yes." The word came out breathless.
His hand slid between her legs, and she jerked at the first touch. Her flesh was slick, swollen, aching with a heat that had been building since the program started. He found her clit and she cried out, her hips grinding against his palm.
"You're already soaked," he said, not teasing, just observing. "The program is working as intended."
"I know what it's doing," she managed. "Just do it."
His robe fell open as he shifted her weight, and she felt him against her thigh. Hard, thick, the pressure of it unmistakable. He guided himself to her entrance, and she felt the blunt head press against her. She was so wet she felt him slide in with barely any resistance, a deep, stretching fullness that made her whole body seize.
"Holy shit," she breathed.
He held her suspended, his hips working against hers. Each thrust drove him deeper, the angle perfect, pressing against the front wall of her cunt. Her belly swayed heavily between them, the weight of three growing lives pressing down with every motion. She felt the strain in her abdominal muscles, the deep, grinding pressure of her pelvis, and it all blurred together with the exquisite fullness of being fucked senseless by an android in a chamber of violet light.
Her breasts bounced with each impact, heavy and aching, and she felt the warm drip of fluid at her nipples, startled by the actual sensation.
"That's the supply," Thorn said, noticing her gasp. "Your body is producing."
She could not answer. She closed her eyes, head thrown back against his shoulder, and let him drive her toward the edge.
She could not answer. She closed her eyes, head thrown back against his shoulder, and let him drive her toward the edge.
Then he quickened his pace.
It was deliberate, a measured shift in rhythm that he executed without hurry. His hips snapped against hers with a new, driving force, each thrust landing deeper and harder. The sound of it filled the hub, wet and rhythmic, echoing off the cold metal walls. Nia's hands flew to his shoulders, nails digging into his golden skin.
"Oh, fuck," she gasped.
The motion of her body changed. Her heavy breasts swung with each impact, the warm fluid at her nipples smearing across the bare skin of his chest. Her belly, huge and tight, swayed between them, pressing against his abdomen with every drive. The weight of it shifted her center of gravity, and his arm tightened under her thighs, holding her steady against the force of his movement.
"You wanted the full run," Thorn said, his voice calm and unhurried. "This is part of it."
She could not form a response. The pressure building in her pelvis was no longer just the slow, grinding weight of her pregnancy. It was sharper now, coiling tight and bright, lit by the steady friction of his thrusts. Her hips bucked against him, seeking more, and he gave it to her without being asked.
Sanne had stepped back toward the wall, her hand pressed flat against her own still-soft belly. "The program is responding to her arousal," she said quietly, watching the violet light pulse faster overhead. "It's feeding it back to her."
Vera stood at the console, forgotten, her competitive stillness replaced by something rawer. She watched Nia's face, the slack jaw, the half-lidded eyes. "It's doing more than that," she said. "She's going to come."
Nia heard them, distantly, as if through water. What she felt was the perfect rhythm of Thorn's hips, the deep stretch of him inside her, and the strange, dizzying weight of her own swollen body. The pressure in her chest, the ache in her back, the heavy drag of her belly, it all concentrated into a single point low in her cunt.
"Don't stop," she managed, the words thick. "Don't you dare stop."
He did not stop. He quickened again, a final, deliberate surge, and the violet light flared white. She felt him drive her over the edge, her whole body clenching around him in a wave that started in her core and rolled outward. Her back arched against his chest. Her mouth opened on a silent cry. The contraction in her abdomen, the heavy, rippling pressure of her pregnancy, pulsed in time with the orgasm, amplifying it until she could not tell where one ended and the other began.
Thorn held her through it, still moving, his rhythm steady even as her body seized. When she sagged against him, breathing hard, he slowed. His hand came up to her face, tilting it toward him.
"Your heart rate is elevated," he said. "But you're stable."
Nia blinked at him, her vision clearing. She could feel the smile spreading across her face, slow and loose. "That was the setting," she said, her voice hoarse. "Maximum sensitivity."
"No," Thorn said. "That was you."
She laughed, a raw, breathless sound. The motion made her heavy breasts shift, and she felt the damp warmth at her nipples spread. She pressed her hand against her belly, feeling the taut, crowded weight settle against her palm.
"Okay," she said. "Okay. I think I'm ready for the rest of it now."
Vera stepped forward, her eyes sharp. "You just came hard enough to hit the ceiling. You want more?"
Nia looked at her, and her grin went crooked.
"I haven't felt the labor yet," she said. "That's the whole point."
But Thorn did not slow. His hand left her face and reached past her hip, palm pressing flat against the console's surface as he held her suspended with one arm. The plate glowed beneath his fingers, and Nia felt the change before she understood it.
A deep, electric pulse ran through her body. The orgasm, which had been ebbing, surged back to full force without warning. Her spine bowed, her heels digging into his forearm, and she heard herself cry out, a sound she did not recognize.
"What did you do?" Vera's voice cut through the haze. "Thorn, what did you touch?"
He did not answer. His fingers moved across the console with the same composed precision he used for everything else. The violet light overhead flickered, then steadied into a deeper, more saturated hue. The pressure in Nia's abdomen shifted, dropping lower, settling into her pelvic cradle with a weight that stole her breath.
"Your calibration," Thorn said, his voice calm against her ear. "I've moved your gestation forward. You're at thirty-six weeks now."
Nia's orgasm crested again, harder than the first, rippling through her in long, shuddering waves. Her belly tightened in response, a rhythmic clench that echoed the pulse between her thighs. She felt the two rhythms merge, contraction and climax becoming indistinguishable.
"That's," she gasped, "that's not what I, oh, oh god."
"You said you wanted the full run." Thorn's hand left the console and returned to her hip, steadying her. "Labor is part of it. I've accelerated the timeline."
Sanne stepped closer, her hand still pressed to her own belly. "You moved her into labor? Mid-orgasm?"
"She was already there," Thorn said. "Her body was responding to the simulation. I gave it permission to proceed."
Nia felt it building again. Her orgasm had not stopped, had only plateaued, and now it surged higher. The weight in her pelvis ground down with each contraction, a deep, spreading pressure that made her thighs tremble. Her breasts leaked freely now, warm fluid running down her belly in thin rivulets.
"I can't," she breathed. "I can't, it's too much."
But her hips kept moving against him, seeking the thickness of his cock with a hunger that overrode her protests. He answered her, driving deeper, and the contraction peaked in perfect sync with his thrust. Her whole body seized, her vision whiting out.
"I didn't say stop," she managed, when she could speak again. "I said I can't. There's a difference."
Thorn's hand found her belly, pressing flat against the taut, straining curve. She felt the weight shift beneath his palm, a deep, rolling movement from inside.
"Your contractions are starting," he said. "That was the first one. They'll build in intensity from this point."
Nia stared down at herself. Her belly was impossibly large now, the skin drum-tight and gleaming under the violet light. She could feel the pressure of three bodies packed inside her, pressing outward against her walls. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps.
"Then fuck me through it," she said. "Don't stop. Whatever this is, don't stop."
Thorn tilted his head, considering her. "The program allows for that. With your consent."
"You have it."
His arm tightened under her thighs, adjusting her angle, and he began to move again. Slow, deep strokes that grounded her against the rising tide of pressure in her pelvis. The next contraction rolled through her as he thrust, and she rode it, her head thrown back, her hands fisting in his shoulder.
Nia sagged against Thorn, her breath coming in long, shuddering pulls. He held her weight easily, one arm still under her thighs, and she let her head rest against his shoulder. The contraction eased, leaving her trembling and slick.
"I need a second," she managed.
Thorn inclined his head and lowered her to the floor. Her bare feet met the cold metal and she swayed, one hand bracing against his chest, the other pressed to the massive curve of her belly. The garment she had worn lay in a crumpled heap near the console, grey and translucent where her body had strained it beyond its limits.
"Take as long as you need," he said. "Your labor is still building."
Vera was already at her side, a hand hovering at Nia's elbow. "You're shaking."
"I know. It's fine." Nia straightened, wincing as the weight in her pelvis settled. "I just need to find my footing."
Sanne had drifted to the far wall, her back against the cool metal. She watched Nia with a distant, dreamy attention, but her own hand had moved to her stomach. The cream-colored fabric of her sweater dress was still loose, still soft, draped over a silhouette that had not yet changed. She pressed her palm flat and held still.
Something shifted beneath her hand.
It was subtle, barely a pulse, but she felt it. A faint warmth spreading through her lower abdomen, slow and deep, like the first blush of coming heat. She looked down. The fabric lay against her hips as it always had, but the shape beneath it was different. Fuller. Softer. A rounding that had not been there before.
"Oh," she breathed.
Vera looked over. "What?"
Sanne did not answer. She smoothed her palm over her belly, feeling the new contour, the gentle rise where before there had been only a flat, familiar plane. The program was working. Her gestation had begun. Nine months of slow, deliberate change, compressed into the space of an hour. But the rate was hers to set, and she had set it slow.
She wanted to watch.
The sweater dress clung to her waist as she traced the curve. She could feel her skin warming beneath the knit, the soft tissue plumping, filling outward cell by cell. It was not the sudden, tidal surge that had struck Nia. This was something else. Patient. Measured. A flower opening in time-lapse, each petal unfurling a degree at a time.
She pulled the hem of the dress up, just to her ribs, and looked at herself.
Her belly was rounding. The change was visible if she watched closely, a slow, steady inflation of the soft curve above her pelvis. She pressed her fingers into the new give of it, felt the warmth beneath her skin, the stretch beginning to build. It was beautiful. She thought of her cameras, of the slow sequence of images she would have taken if she could hold this moment. But the program gave her something better. It let her live inside the frame.
Her breasts began to swell.
It was a gradual thing, no sudden surge. The soft weight of them lifted against her chest, filling her palms as she reached up to touch. The sweater dress's neckline shifted, the knit straining gently over a new fullness. She felt the tissue grow warm and dense, the nipples tightening against the fabric. Her breath went shallow.
"Look at you," Vera said, and her voice was softer than before, almost reverent.
Sanne turned to face them, still holding her hem. The violet light caught the pale skin of her belly, the rising slope of it. She watched it grow as she stood there, the curve deepening, broadening, the soft weight settling into her hips. She felt her own center of gravity shift, a faint tilt in her posture as her body adjusted to accommodate the new mass.
"It's starting," she said. Her voice was quiet, filled with wonder. "I can feel it building."
She let the hem drop and pressed both hands to the growing mound. The knit of her dress stretched over the new curve, hugging it, revealing the shape. Her breasts had risen to press against the neckline, heavy and full, and she watched the fabric pull tight across them.
"How long until term?" Vera asked.
Sanne smiled, slow and dreamy. "I've set it for the full journey. Every week of it." She closed her eyes, her hands still on her belly. "I want to know every stage. The first flutter. The first kick. The weight when it gets hard to breathe."
She opened her eyes and looked at Nia, who had found a seat on the edge of the console, still breathing hard.
"I want to feel it all," Sanne said. "Not the rush. The slow climb."
Nia nodded, a thin, tired smile on her face. "That's the part I skipped."
"I know." Sanne turned back to herself, watching the curve of her belly rise another fraction in the violet light. "But it's the part I came for."
"Wait," Vera said, and her voice came out stranded somewhere between her own throat and her chest. "Wait. I didn't dial anything yet."
She looked down. The dark charcoal tank lay flat against her torso. Then it didn't. The fabric began to tent, lifting off her abdomen in a slow, impossible rise. She watched it happen the way she watched a barbell fall, knowing it was going to land but unable to step aside.
Her belly swelled. It was not a tide like Nia's, not a patient bloom like Sanne's. It was a single, violent surge. The contour of her waist vanished in seconds, replaced by a hard, round dome that strained the matte fabric to its limit. The tank rode up, exposing a crescent of pale olive skin that gleamed with new warmth. Her leggings bit into her hips as the mass pushed downward, settling into her pelvis with a weight that made her stagger.
"What the hell," she breathed.
Her breasts followed. They rose against the tank's neckline, filling with a speed that made her gasp. The fabric stretched over them, going thin and translucent, and she felt the tissue pack in, heavy and warm, pressing against her sternum. Her nipples dragged against the cloth and she flinched at the sensation, sharp and electric.
She planted a hand on the console. The metal was cold under her damp palm. Her belly jutted out in front of her, a vast, taut sphere that threw her off balance. She looked down at herself and could not find her feet.
"Is this the program?" she asked, and her voice cracked. "I didn't set a gestation. I didn't confirm anything."
Thorn turned toward her, still holding Nia's hand. "The synchronization sequence applies to all active participants. Your baseline parameters were registered when you entered the hub."
"I didn't pick a number."
"You didn't need to." His dark eyes were calm, patient. "The program defaults to the most efficient trajectory for the selected labor profile. Extreme endurance requires a full gestation. The simulation accelerated you to term to match your requested timeline."
Vera stared at him. Her belly gave a deep, grinding lurch, and she felt the weight shift inside her. Something moved, a heavy pressure rolling against her abdominal wall. Her hand flew to the curve, pressing flat, and she felt the warm, dense firmness beneath her palm.
"I asked for the labor," she said. "Not the whole damn pregnancy."
"Labor requires a pregnancy, Vera." Nia's voice was rough, tired, but there was a thread of amusement in it. "You can't skip to the finish line."
"I wanted to earn it."
"You just did." Sanne had lowered her hem, her own belly rounding slowly beneath the cream knit. "The program put you at term. You skipped the waiting, not the work."
Vera looked down at herself again. The tank was useless now, riding high above the vast curve of her belly, her breasts spilling over the straining neckline. She was heavy. Real. The weight of three lives none of them had chosen pressed down on her bladder, her spine, her aching thighs. She felt a tightness building low in her pelvis, a coil she recognized from the last brutal rep of a deadlift set.
This is a different kind of push, and her body is already leaning into it. She steadies herself, feet planted wide, her belly heavy and hot beneath her hands. The violet light pulses over her skin, and she narrows her eyes.
"You said the labor builds," she says to Thorn. "How long until it peaks?"
"Twelve minutes at the current calibration," he says. "You can adjust the rate."
"No." She shakes her head, feeling the sweat gather at her temple. "I want to feel it build. All of it."
Her belly tightens with a deep, rolling contraction. She braces, hips shifting under the weight, her breath hitching. The pain is bright and new and enormous. She is grinning.
Vera pushed off the console and started walking.
Her feet found the hub's outer ring, a slow circuit along the curve of the wall. The weight of her belly swayed with each step, heavy and low. Her bare arms came up to cradle the underside of the dome, and she planted her feet with a deliberate, even rhythm.
"That's it," she said to herself. "Keep moving."
The contraction rolled through her halfway around the room. Her hips bucked, her stride broke, and she stopped dead. Her hands clamped onto her belly as the tightness seized her from inside, a deep, grinding squeeze that squeezed her breath into a short, sharp hiss. She rode it standing, feet apart, refusing to sink.
"Come on," she gritted. "That all you've got?"
The wave peaked, held, and slowly receded. She exhaled and started walking again.
Nia watched from her seat at the console, still catching her breath. "You're going to wear yourself out before the real work."
"No such thing." Vera's voice was strained but steady. "Walking keeps it moving. That's what they say."
"They say you're supposed to rest between contractions."
"They say that for people who tap out." Vera turned at the far wall and headed back. The motion jostled her breasts, heavy and sensitive under the dark tank. She ignored them. Her focus was on the floor beneath her feet, the next step, the next breath.
The second contraction came three laps later. It hit lower, a hot, pressing wave that drove the air from her lungs. Her knees buckled. She caught herself against the wall with one hand, her head dropping, her forehead pressing to the cool metal. A sound escaped her, low and guttural. She ground her teeth and pushed herself upright.
"You good?" Sanne called from the other side of the room.
"Fine." Vera pushed off the wall and kept walking. Her belly jutted out ahead of her, a hard, gleaming sphere under the tank's damp fabric. She set her jaw and counted her steps. Twenty. Twenty-one. Twenty-two.
"You don't have to prove anything," Nia said quietly.
Vera laughed, a raw, breathless sound. "The hell I don't."
The third contraction caught her mid-stride. She kept moving through it, her pace slowing but not stopping. Her feet shuffled forward, one after another, while her body seized around the pressure building in her pelvis. She felt the weight of her burden settle lower, grinding against the bones of her hips. She breathed through it, short and sharp, and did not stop walking.
"That's one," she counted when it finally loosened. "Three to go."
"Seven," Thorn corrected. He had moved to the edge of the room, arms crossed, watching her with the same patient focus. "The peaks intensify as you approach delivery."
"Seven, then." Vera picked up her pace. Her thighs were trembling, sweat darkening the shoulders of the tank. Her belly rocked with each step, heavy and hot. She did not slow.
By the fifth lap, the contractions were close enough that she barely had time to catch her breath between them. Her feet moved automatically now, a march ground out of pure stubbornness. The pain was bright and enormous, rolling through her in relentless waves. She met each one standing, walking, refusing to bend.
"Can you keep this up?" Nia asked.
Vera's grin was a white flash in the violet light. "Watch me."
The sixth contraction dropped her to her knees. It took her without warning, a sweeping wave that folded her legs and drove her down onto the cold metal floor. She caught herself on her forearms, her belly pressed against her thighs, and for a long moment she did not move. Her breath came in ragged gasps.
"Vera." Sanne's voice was sharp with concern, and her soft belly was no longer soft, the cream knit straining as she hurried forward.
"Don't." Vera held up a hand, her face hidden. "I'm not done."
She pushed herself up. Her arms shook. Her legs shook. Her belly, huge and heavy, dragged at her spine. She planted her feet, steadied herself, and took one step. Then another. She was walking again.
"Five more," she said, through gritted teeth. "Five more laps. Then you give me that finish line."
The final contraction hit her as she rounded the console. Her whole body seized, and she did not stop. Her feet kept moving, shuffling, sliding, her hands braced against her belly. She felt the pressure peak and crest, sweeping through her pelvis in a long, grinding wave. She put one foot in front of the other and walked through it. She walked until it broke, until her breath came back, until she reached the far wall and turned to face the others.
"Now," she said, and her voice was hoarse and steady. "Let's get this thing out."
The words barely left her mouth before her body answered.
A deep, wet gush flooded down her thighs, soaking the leggings in a rush of warm fluid that pooled on the metal floor beneath her. She looked down, stunned. The dark fabric darkened further, clinging to her legs, and a fresh wave of pressure rolled through her pelvis, low and grinding.
"Holy shit," she breathed.
Thorn was there before she could finish the thought. His hand caught her elbow, steadying her as her knees wobbled. The other hand went low, sliding past the soaked waistband of her leggings, finding the slick, swollen flesh beneath.
She gasped at the first touch. His fingers parted her folds with a practiced, gentle precision, and found her clit. The pad of his thumb pressed against it in a slow, deliberate circle, and the sensation cut through the pain like a blade of light.
"What are you doing?" she managed, her voice cracked.
"Helping you through it," he said. His dark eyes held hers. "The program allows for intervention. You asked for the build. You didn't ask to suffer alone."
She wanted to argue. The words died in her throat as another contraction seized her, deep and enormous, and his thumb kept moving in that steady, patient rhythm. The pain and the pleasure twisted together, tangled in her pelvis until she could not tell them apart. Her hips bucked against his hand, seeking more.
"That's it," Thorn said. "Breathe through it. Let it build."
Her hands flew to his shoulders. The fluid ran down her legs, pooling at her feet, and she did not care. The weight of her belly dragged at her spine, the pressure in her pelvis mounting to something unbearable. His thumb circled her clit faster, and she felt herself rising toward a peak she had not known she was approaching.
"Don't stop," she gritted. "Don't you fucking stop."
"I won't."
The contraction crested. Her whole body seized, her back arching, her mouth open on a long, wordless cry. The orgasm rolled through her in waves, deep and shattering, and she felt the pressure in her pelvis shift, drop, settle into the bones of her hips. Her belly tightened around the weight inside her, a deep, rhythmic clench that echoed the pulse between her thighs.
"That was the peak," Thorn said, his voice calm against the ringing in her ears. "You're in transition. You're almost there."
She sagged against him, breathing hard. The fluid at her feet had spread into a wide, dark pool. Her leggings were ruined. Her tank was soaked through. She did not care about any of it.
"Almost there," she repeated. The words tasted like iron. "How close?"
"Minutes." His hand was still between her legs, his thumb still moving, slower now, grounding her. "The next contraction will bring the urge to push."
She pushed herself upright, planting her feet wide. Her belly jutted out ahead of her, heavy and hot. She felt the pressure building again, rising from deep in her core, and this time she did not fight it. She leaned into it, let it take her, and bore down.
The violet light flared. Somewhere, distantly, she heard Sanne gasp and Nia say something low and urgent. She did not hear the words. All she felt was the enormous, undeniable pressure of her body working, and Thorn's steady hand between her thighs, keeping her anchored to the moment.
She bore down with the next wave, and the pressure in her pelvis turned white-hot and enormous. Her thighs trembled. Her hands clawed at Thorn's shoulders, and she heard herself make a sound like a wounded animal.
"Good," Thorn said. "That's good. Now stop pushing and breathe."
The command cut through the haze. She sucked in air, short and ragged, and the pressure eased a fraction. The contraction receded, leaving her shaking and slick.
"Was that progress?" she managed.
"Some." He shifted his grip, one arm sliding around her back, the other moving to the underside of her belly. "You need to change position. The angle is wrong."
She did not argue. She let him guide her, turning her so her back was to the console. He lowered her into a crouch, her knees spread wide, her forearms braced against the cold metal edge. Her belly rested against her thighs, vast and heavy. The fluid pooling at her feet slid over her calves.
"I can't," she gasped. "This is worse."
"It's better for delivery." His voice was calm. His hand found the small of her back, pressing gently. "Let your hips open. Don't fight it."
The next contraction rose without warning, deep and grinding. She bore down instinctively, and she felt the weight in her pelvis shift, sink, settle into the cradle of her bones. A burning pressure stretched her from the inside, unfamiliar and enormous.
"That's it," Thorn said. "That's the urge to push. Ride it, don't shove it."
"How the hell do I ride it?"
"Match it. Breathe in, then push with the peak."
She obeyed. The breath came in, short and sharp, and then she pushed, low and steady, her whole body straining. The burning spread, widening, and she felt something give. A pressure at her entrance, a slow, stretching fullness that made her cry out.
"Good," Thorn said. "Again. Same rhythm."
Another breath. Another push. The stretching deepened, and she felt the weight of the baby pressing down, moving through her, inch by impossible inch. Her vision whited. She gripped the console rails until her knuckles went pale.
"I can't," she said, but she pushed anyway.
"Yes, you can." His hand was a warm, steady pressure at her lower back. "You're almost there. One more like that."
She pushed with the next swell, and the burning peaked into a bright ring of fire. She screamed through it, a raw, throat-shredding sound, and then the pressure released. Something slid free, wet and warm, into Thorn's waiting hands.
She sagged, barely aware. Her breath came in heaving gasps. Between her thighs, she felt the rush of fluid and warmth, and then Thorn shifted, cradling something against her thigh.
"One down," he said softly. "Two more to go."
