Chapter 2: The Second Push
Vera's breath came in ragged gasps, her head fallen back against the cool deck. Her chest heaved, sweat slicking her temples and darkening the collar of her tank top. Between her thighs, the afterglow of release still pulsed, faint and fading.
She did not get to enjoy it.
The second contraction rose like a tide, relentless and huge. It caught her mid-breath, doubling her forward onto her hands and knees. A raw cry tore from her throat, nothing like the controlled grunt she had managed for the first.
"Easy," Thorn said. His voice was low and even, a counterweight to the chaos of her body. He knelt beside her, one hand sliding along her soaked thigh. "You have done this once. Your body knows the way now."
"Easy for you to say," Vera gritted out. "You're not the one being torn in half."
"True." His palm pressed steady against the meat of her quadriceps, grounding her. "But I am here, and I will not let go until you are through."
Across the hub, Nia watched from a few paces back. Her own belly, distended and heavy with triplets, pulled at her spine. She had one palm braced beneath it, fingers splayed wide. The violet light of the chamber pulsed in rhythm with Vera's contractions, painting her high cheekbones and the swell of her breasts in shifting shades.
Sanne leaned against the curved wall, one hand pressed to the small of her back. Her nine-month gestation had crept slower than the others, but it had its own weight, its own low ache. She had watched Vera's labor with a photographer's eye, cataloguing the strain in her jaw, the clench of her fingers against the deck.
"I can see it," Vera breathed. Her voice went thin, sharpened by the mounting pressure. "I can feel the head." Her body bore down on its own, hips tilting, muscles seizing with a force that had her braced tendons standing out along her forearms.
Thorn shifted his grip, cradling the crown as it emerged. His fingers were warm, precise. "Slow now," he murmured. "Let the stretch happen."
Vera shook her head, shuddering. "No. I can't." Another wave of pressure, immense and unrelenting, built low in her pelvis. "Oh God, it's so much."
"You can," Nia said firmly, stepping closer. The weight of her own pregnancy made every step deliberate, but her voice carried the confidence of a woman who had run her own merciless simulations. "You're already doing it. One more push, Vera."
The contraction crested. Vera screamed, a raw and involuntary sound that filled the circular chamber and echoed off the metallic walls. Her body surrendered to the pressure, bearing down with everything she had left.
The second baby slid free in a rush of fluid, landing in Thorn's cupped hands. He turned it gently, clearing the small face with a soft thumb, and the chamber filled with a thin, reedy cry.
Vera sagged, shaking, head bowed between her arms. Sweat dripped from her chin to the deck. "Two," she managed. "Two more."
"No," Thorn corrected, his voice gentle. He lifted the infant, turning it toward her. "Two. This is your second. One remains."
"Christ." Vera's laugh came out as a breathless sob. "I keep saying that."
Sanne pushed away from the wall and stepped closer. Her fingers traced the curve of her own belly as she looked down at the newborn, small and perfect in Thorn's hold. "You're incredible, Vera. That was," she paused, searching for the word, "fierce."
"You watch that one." Vera gestured weakly toward her belly, still vast and taut. "Your turn's coming."
Sanne smiled, a warm and knowing thing. "I've been waiting for it."
She wanted to say something else, but the third contraction cut her off like a door slamming shut.
Vera's jaw locked. Her shoulders bunched, tendons standing out along her neck. She pushed before the wave fully crested, desperate to be done, and the pressure answered her with a white-hot burn that dragged a scream out of her throat.
Thorn cradled the second infant against his chest and reached down with his free hand, guiding her through it. "Last one," he said. "Push through."
Vera did. She braced her palms flat on the deck, drove her hips down, and bore down with everything her body had left. The stretch peaked, impossibly wide, and then the third baby slid free into the warm hush of the chamber.
Thorn gathered it quickly, his movements precise. He cleared its face with a thumb, and the thin cry that followed seemed to release something in the room itself. The violet light dimmed to a softer pulse.
Vera collapsed onto her side, chest heaving. Her belly had eased from its taut dome to something softer, still heavy but finally emptied. "Three," she whispered. "I did three."
"You did," Thorn said.
One of the infants squirmed against his forearm. He shifted them carefully, gathering the second one against his chest as well.
Nia stood a few paces back, one hand splayed beneath her heavy belly. She had watched Vera's final push with a mixture of awe and restlessness, her own body humming with a low, constant tension that she could not quite place. The ache in her lower back had sharpened over the past minutes, crawling around her hips like a slow fire.
Then she felt it.
Something inside her gave way, a deep and quiet release. Warm fluid ran down the inside of her thigh, soaking the seam of her slate-grey bodysuit. The sound it made was soft, almost impossible to hear over Vera's ragged breathing, but Nia felt it like a crack in her own foundation.
"Oh," she said. "Oh, okay."
Sanne looked up. "What?"
Nia looked down at the dark stain spreading across the fabric between her legs. "My water broke."
The words landed in the chamber like a dropped stone. Vera raised her head, sweat-dark hair plastered to her cheeks, and stared at Nia with a wild half-laugh. "Your turn."
"My turn," Nia echoed. The calm of her voice surprised her. She had run the numbers a hundred times, had mapped every contraction of a triple-gestation labor, had told herself she wanted maximum intensity. But the heat pooling in her pelvis was not a datum on a screen. It was real, and it was coming.
The first contraction did not rise so much as detonate. It seized her low in the belly and squeezed, hard enough to fold her forward. She gripped her own bump with both hands, bracing as the wave rolled through her, deep and relentless.
"Breathe," Thorn said. He had laid the two infants down on a soft fold of fabric and was already moving toward her, his stride unhurried, his focus absolute. "Let it move through you."
"Don't tell me to breathe," Nia gritted out. The contraction peaked and held, a wall of pressure that pushed down against her cervix with brutal intent. "I designed this program. I know what's coming."
Thorn reached her and knelt, one hand finding her elbow. "Knowing is not the same as feeling."
She could not argue with that. The wave crested and receded, leaving her trembling, her palms slick against the swollen curve of her belly. Her bodysuit was soaked now. The amniotic pool glistened on the deck between her boots.
Sanne stepped closer, her own slow-gestation weight shifting heavily in her hips. She looked at Nia with a steady, unblinking gaze. "How close are your contractions?"
Nia did the math in her head. "Three minutes. Maybe less." She forced a breath out. "The program accelerated me to 36 weeks. The labor profile defaults to high-intensity for multiples."
"So it's going to be fast," Sanne said.
"Fast is the plan." Nia straightened, ignoring the way her lower back screamed in protest. She had never wanted slow. She had wanted to feel everything, every instant of it, the raw and the brutal and the overwhelming.
The next contraction hit before she could finish the thought. It took her knees out from under her, and she went down hard, one hand slamming flat to the deck to catch herself. Thorn was there in an instant, his arm wrapping around her shoulders, steadying her.
"Easy," he murmured.
"Not easy." Nia's voice came out strained, stripped of its earlier composure. The pressure was building again already, stacking on itself like a wave against a seawall. "Something's wrong. It's too fast."
"Nothing is wrong," Thorn said. His hand found hers, lacing their fingers together over the taut curve of her belly. "Your body is doing exactly what you programmed it to do. You asked for maximum intensity. This is maximum intensity."
Nia laughed, cracked and breathless. "I'm an idiot."
"You're bold," Sanne said softly. She had moved to Vera's side, helping her sit up, guiding the nearest infant toward her chest. "There's a difference."
Vera cradled her baby, exhausted and glowing, and looked at Nia with a grin that held no pity. "You wanted to feel everything. So feel it."
The next contraction surged, and Nia did.
The contraction crested and broke, leaving Nia gasping on her knees. The violet light pulsed around them, steady as a heartbeat. She felt the rhythm of her own body now, the slow drum of pressure building again in her pelvis.
Thorn remained beside her, his hand warm on her shoulder. He studied her face for a long moment, then glanced down at the pool of fluid spreading beneath her.
"You have ten minutes," he said. "Maybe less."
Nia looked up at him, her brow furrowed. "That's what I just told you."
"Ten minutes until you start pushing." Thorn's voice was calm, clinical. His thumb traced a slow circle on her collarbone. "That is enough time for one fuck."
The words landed like a slap. Nia's anger flared hot and immediate, cutting through the haze of pressure.
"Are you serious?" She shoved at his chest, though the effort cost her. "I'm in labor. I'm about to push three babies out of my body, and you want to have sex with me?"
"Yes."
"Thorn, that's," she sputtered, "that's absurd."
"You asked for maximum intensity." His dark eyes held hers, unblinking. "Every parameter. Every sensation. I am simply reading your own specifications back to you."
"That's not what I, the labor profile, I built that to include pain and pressure, I didn't," Nia's words tangled. Another contraction was building, a low ache that crawled around her hips and settled deep in her belly. "I didn't program this."
"You didn't have to." Thorn shifted closer, his robe falling open across his chest. "You selected the highest intensity setting. This is part of it."
"Christ." Nia pressed a hand to her forehead. "You're not even human. You can't just decide when I'm in the mood."
"I am not deciding." His voice dropped, softer. "I am offering. You have ten minutes, Nia. Ten minutes before your body takes over completely. Do you want me, or not?"
The question hung in the air. Sanne had gone quiet on the other side of the chamber, one hand pressed to her own belly. Vera watched with a half-smile, her new baby nestled against her chest.
Nia felt the next contraction rise, a slow and immense wave. It pressed down, deep and demanding, and her breath caught in her throat.
"Yes," she heard herself say. "Fine. Whatever gets me through this."
Thorn moved with fluid grace, easing her back against the padded deck. His hands found the seams of her bodysuit and pulled them apart, the fabric peeling away from her swollen body. Nia lay there, vast and heavy, her breasts full and her belly taut and gleaming.
He settled between her thighs, his robe discarded, his body warm and golden in the violet light. Nia watched him, still half-angry, half-trembling.
"Don't make me regret this," she said.
Thorn leaned down and kissed her throat. "You won't."
He positioned himself at her entrance and slid inside her. Nia's anger evaporated in a single sharp breath, knocked clean out of her by the sudden press of his girth. She had expected him to be careful, gentle, mindful of her state. He was not. He was thick, impossibly so, stretching her open in a single slow push that had her arching off the deck.
"Oh," she breathed. "Oh, God."
"Breathe," Thorn murmured.
"Shut up." But her voice had lost its edge. Her hands found his shoulders, her nails digging in as he began to move.
The rhythm was slow at first, deep and deliberate. Each thrust pressed against the weight of the babies in her belly, a fullness layered on fullness until Nia could not tell where one sensation ended and another began. She felt the ache of labor coiling beneath her skin, the push of pressure building in her pelvis, and underneath it all the thick, hot drag of him inside her.
She stopped thinking. There was only the violet light, the wet sound of their bodies, the low groan she could not hold in.
The pleasure crested inside her, a bright hot pulse that had her heels digging into the deck. But before the wave could break, the contraction hit. It came not as a squeeze but as a clamp, an iron band that cinched around her belly and hauled, dragging her cervix open with a violence that made her scream around the pleasure.
Thorn stilled above her, his hands going to her hips. "Nia."
"Don't stop," she gasped. "Don't you dare stop."
He moved again, slower, and every thrust pressed against the hard weight of her belly. The contraction rolled through her without end, building on itself, stacking pressure on pressure until her vision swam. She felt her own body bear down, an involuntary surrender that had her gripping Thorn's forearms hard enough to bruise.
"That's it," he said. "Let it work."
"I can't," she choked. "It's too much. Why is it speeding up?"
"Triplets," Thorn said, his voice strained now, his rhythm faltering. "Your cervix is dilating faster than the program projected. Your body is going into precipitate labor."
Precipitate. Nia knew the term. She had written it into the parameters herself, had flagged it as a risk condition for high-intensity multiples. She had wanted the cascade, the rapid-fire descent of contractions that gave no rest, no mercy.
She had been an idiot.
The next contraction hit before the last one finished receding. It tore through her in a wave of white heat, and she arched off the deck with a scream that bounced off the metal walls. Her hands flew to her belly, gripping the taut, gleaming curve as her body bore down without her consent.
Thorn pulled out of her in a single slick motion. "It's time."
"What?" Nia's eyes flew open. "No. I'm not ready."
"Your body is." He moved swiftly, positioning her onto her hands and knees, bracing her shoulders with his forearms. "The babies are coming. All of them, and they are coming now."
Across the chamber, Sanne scrambled to her feet, one hand pressed to the small of her back. "Nia, breathe."
"Don't tell me to breathe," Nia snarled. The contraction seized her again, harder than the last. She felt the pressure in her pelvis, immense and grinding, a weight that pushed down with relentless intent. Her body bore down of its own accord, thighs trembling, and the stretch began.
"God," Nia sobbed. "God, it's too fast. I can't, I can't, I can't."
"You can," Thorn said. His hand slid beneath her, finding the hot, swollen crown of the first baby's head. "You're already doing it. The head is right here, Nia. Push."
She did not choose to push. Her body did it for her, a convulsive surge of muscle that yanked a raw scream from her throat. The pressure peaked and broke, and the first baby slid free into Thorn's waiting hand.
"One," Thorn said. He cleared the tiny face, and a thin, furious cry filled the chamber. "One of three."
Nia could not catch her breath. The contraction had barely released before the next one rose, faster than she could track, a hammer blow that folded her onto her elbows. She screamed into the deck, her fingers scrabbling against the smooth metal.
"Too much," she gasped. "I can't do this. It's too much."
"It's for you," Sanne said softly. Her hand found Nia's shoulder, warm and steady. "You chose the highest intensity. You wanted to feel everything."
Nia lifted her head, sweat streaming down her face. "I was wrong."
"You weren't." Sanne's eyes held hers. "You're feeling everything. Every single thing. And you're going to push through."
The next contraction detonated. Nia's body seized, bore down, and the second baby crowned with a burn that dragged another scream out of her raw throat. Thorn caught it, guided it, and the cry that followed was thin and furious and alive.
"Two," Thorn said. "One more."
Nia sagged, her cheek pressed to the cool deck. Her belly was still vast and heavy, still full of that final weight. The pressure built again, slower this time but deeper, a groundswell that had her trembling.
"Tell me," Thorn said quietly. "Tell me you don't want this."
Nia's laugh came out as a sob. "I want it. I hate it. I want it."
"Then push."
She did. She gathered everything she had left, every scrap of grit and stubbornness, and bore down with a force that turned the world white. The stretch peaked, impossibly wide, and then the third baby slid free in a rush of warmth and light.
Thorn lifted it, cleared its face, and the third cry joined the others in a ragged chorus. Nia collapsed onto her side, her body shuddering, her belly finally soft and empty.
"Three," she whispered.
Thorn laid all three infants against her chest, their tiny bodies warm and squirming. Nia looked down at them, at the small fists and the scrunched faces, and felt something in her chest crack open.
"Three," she said again, softer.
Vera let out a low whistle from across the chamber. "So. That's what maximum intensity looks like."
Nia laughed, cracked and exhausted. "That's what it looks like."
Sanne had gone very still. Her hand was pressed to her own belly, her face pale in the violet light. She looked down at the growing dark stain spreading across her cream-colored dress.
"Oh," she said. "I think my turn is now."
