Chapter 12: The Rules Hold

The door clicked shut behind Aarav, the ice cream carton already sweating in his grip. The smell of cumin and coriander drifted from the kitchen, and for a moment the flat felt like home again. Warm. Familiar. Untouched by the experiment.

Naina appeared in the hallway, wiping her hands on a towel. Her hair was pulled back, a stray strand clinging to her temple. She smiled when she saw the carton.

"You remembered."

"Obviously."

She took it from him, their fingers brushing. The touch was brief, ordinary. He held on longer than necessary.

Their daughter barreled out of her room, launching herself at Aarav's legs. He scooped her up, spinning her once, her laughter filling the narrow hallway. Naina watched from the kitchen doorway, the ice cream in her hands, and something in her eyes softened.

Dinner was loud in the best way. Their daughter narrated her day in a stream of consciousness. A lizard on the wall. A friend who shared her crayons. The dinosaur song played twice during nap time. Aarav laughed, asked questions, let himself be pulled into the orbit of ordinary life.

They did the dishes together, elbows bumping, the rhythm of years easing the space between them. Their daughter brushed her teeth with exaggerated slowness. By the time she was tucked in, the flat had settled into its nighttime hush.

Aarav stood in the bedroom doorway, watching Naina fold a blanket. The lamplight caught the gold in her earrings, the curve of her shoulder beneath her cotton kurta. His body remembered the months of abstinence. The ache had settled into his bones like a second heartbeat.

He crossed the room slowly.

She looked up as he approached, her hands stilling on the blanket. He reached for her waist, his fingers finding the familiar dip of her hip.

"Naina."

Her name came out low, rough. She didn't pull away. But she didn't lean in either.

His hand slid to the small of her back, drawing her closer. He pressed his lips to her temple, her cheekbone, the corner of her mouth. She sighed. A soft, exhaled sound. His pulse quickened.

"Let me take you to bed."

She didn't answer. Her hand came up to rest on his chest. Not pushing. Not pulling. A warm weight between them.

He kissed her properly then. His mouth found hers. She responded, slow and deliberate, her lips parting under his. The taste of her was familiar and strange all at once. Months since he'd touched her like this. Months of dreaming and wanting and aching.

His hand slid lower, pressing into the curve of her ass. She made a sound against his mouth, and he felt her body shift, her hips tilting toward him.

He walked her backward toward the bed. She went willingly, her fingers gripping his shirt, her breath quickening. The backs of her knees hit the mattress and she sank onto it, pulling him with her.

He was above her, his weight on his forearms, his thigh between hers. Her kurta had ridden up, exposing the smooth skin of her stomach. He lowered his mouth to her neck. The salt of her skin. Her pulse fluttering beneath his tongue.

"Naina." He said it again. A prayer. A plea. "I need you."

She arched beneath him, her fingers threading through his hair. He felt her response in the way her body softened. The way her hips rolled against his thigh.

Then she went still.

"Stop."

The word was quiet. Final.

Aarav froze. His mouth hovered over her collarbone, his breath warm against her skin. "What?"

"The rules." She said it gently, her hand cupping his jaw. "We agreed."

He pulled back, looking down at her. Her eyes were dark, her lips swollen, her chest rising and falling with quick, shallow breaths. She was aroused. He could feel it in the tension of her body, the way her thighs pressed together.

"We can stop anytime," he said. "We can call the whole thing off right now."

"No." She sat up, shifting out from under him. "That's not how it works."

The cool air rushed between them, filling the space where her warmth had been.

"Aarav, please." Her voice softened. "I want you. You know I want you. But if we break the rules now, the whole thing falls apart."

He sat on the edge of the bed, his hands hanging between his knees. The erection pressed against his jeans, insistent and ignored.

She touched his shoulder. "We knew this would be hard."

"Hard isn't the word I'd use."

She almost smiled. Almost. "Try to sleep."

She lay down, turning her back to him. The curve of her hip rose beneath the sheet. A silent invitation he was forbidden to accept.

He lay beside her, staring at the ceiling, his body burning. The dark pressed in, and he didn't sleep for a long time.

The morning came too fast.

Aarav woke with a cock so hard it ached, the sheets tangled around his legs. Naina was already up. The sound of her voice drifted from the kitchen, their daughter's answering chatter.

He showered with the water cold. It didn't help.

At the office, the day stretched ahead like a sentence. He stared at his screen, the code blurring into meaningless symbols. The memory of Naina beneath him, her mouth open, her body arching. The word stop ringing in his ears.

Priya found him at his desk around noon. She had a paper bag in one hand, a takeaway coffee in the other.

"You look like shit," she said.

"Thanks."

She laughed, a short, breathy sound. "I'm not trying to be mean. I'm concerned."

He picked at his food. She ate in silence, letting him settle.

Then he looked at her differently.

The curve of her neck where her blouse dipped. The way her fingers wrapped around the fork, slow and deliberate. The press of her lips when she chewed, her tongue darting out to catch a grain of rice.

His gaze lingered. He didn't mean it to. But the horniness was a second skin, and she was warm and close and soft.

She noticed.

He saw it in the pause of her hand, the slight tilt of her head. Her eyes met his, and she didn't look away.

Then she smiled—small, knowing—and stood.

"Same time tomorrow?"

He nodded, his voice stuck somewhere in his throat.

She walked away, her hips swaying, and he let himself watch.

Across the city, Naina sat at her desk, the afternoon light slanting through the window.

Her phone buzzed.

Nirav: I've been thinking about that dal all day. You've ruined all other food for me.

She smiled despite herself, typing a reply.

Naina: I'll take that as a compliment.

Nirav: You should.

She set the phone down, but it buzzed again immediately.

Nirav: Are you free for a walk? The weather's good, and I need to stretch my legs.

She looked at the message. Then at the clock. Then at the door of her office, where Shyam was walking past, his eyes catching hers for just a moment too long.

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard.

The experiment was still running. The rules were still in place.

But her body remembered the condom in her hand, the shirt clinging to his chest, the way her gaze had dropped to his waist.

She typed: Where should I meet you?
