Silje is straight and not curious. She stumbles on a lesbian pride march where she is kissed and groped by many of the march attendees in a row

Chapter 3: Public Property

A week.

For seven days, Silje had moved through her life as a ghost. She’d returned to the bookstore. She’d stacked new releases, processed orders, and offered polite, vacant smiles to customers. She’d slept, or pretended to. She’d eaten food that tasted like ash. The business card, crisp and white, lived in the pocket of her jeans. It was a small, rectangular itch she carried everywhere. She’d memorized the number without meaning to.

Each night, her body replayed the invasion in the velvet booth with a shocking, vivid clarity. The heat, the smell, the coarse feel of the fabric, the unyielding strength of Liv’s arm, the brutal, thrilling stretch of her fingers. And her own traitorous climax, a seismic betrayal that left her aching and hollow each morning. It felt less like a memory and more like a haunting.

On Thursday, the air turned cold and sharp. The city smelled of impending rain and diesel. Silje left work at her usual time, her steps leading her not toward the subway, but into the winding streets of the old quarter. Her pulse was a dull, persistent drum in her throat. She has a wife.Kids. A standing appointment.

The Velvet Hush’s unmarked door loomed. From inside, the same low, throbbing music seeped out, a siren call to the newly awakened parts of her she despised. She didn’t go in. Instead, she slipped into the narrow alley that ran alongside it, a canyon of stained brick and humming ventilation units. A flickering neon sign from the bar painted the wet pavement in pulses of sickly pink. Laughter, sudden and bright, erupted from a cracked-open door farther down—the bar’s back patio.

She leaned against the cold, damp brick, trying to breathe. Trying to convince herself to leave.

“You look like you’re waiting for a drug deal.”

The voice came from the shadows near the street, cheerful and sharp. Silje jumped, her heart leaping into her mouth.

A woman stepped into the pink neon glow. She was younger than Liv, maybe late twenties, with a riot of short, bright magenta hair that stood in defiant spikes. A silver ring glinted in her brow, and more studs climbed the curve of one ear. She wore a paint-splattered denim jacket over a black tank top and heavy boots. Her eyes, a clear, direct blue, sparkled with amusement.

“I’m not—” Silje started.

“You’re the girl from the march,” the woman said, cutting her off. She took a few steps closer, tilting her head. Her grin was wide, fearless. “Yeah. I remember you. Blonde hair. Big, scared eyes. You got kissed silly.”

Silje’s stomach dropped. She remembered the crush of bodies, the flags, the painted faces. The sudden press of lips, different from Liv’s clinical takeover or Maeve’s practiced decadence. This one had been fervent, chaotic. A strawberry-tinted lip gloss. A tongue that had danced, not conquered.

“Astrid,” the woman said, tapping her own chest. “I was one of them. Hope it wasn’t too traumatic. We were just spreading the love, you know?” She laughed, a sound like breaking glass. “Liberation through excess and all that.”

“You… you kissed me,” Silje whispered, the memory surfacing with dizzying clarity. It had been the first one. The catalyst.

“One of many that day, honey,” Astrid said, shrugging. She leaned against the opposite wall, pulling a pack of cigarettes from her jacket. She lit one, the flare of the match briefly illuminating the sharp angles of her face. “So what are you doing here? Lurking in the alley of the queerest bar in the district. You lost?”

Silje hugged herself, suddenly freezing. “No.”

Astrid blew a stream of smoke into the neon-lit air. Her eyes narrowed, the amusement shifting into something more inquisitive, more predatory. “You waiting for someone? Liv, maybe?”

Silje couldn’t suppress a flinch. It was all the confirmation Astrid needed.

A slow, knowing smile spread across Astrid’s face. “Oh, fuck me. You are. You’re Liv’s Thursday night special.” She barked another laugh. “Shit. She’s really outdone herself this time. A bona fide convert-in-training. How was the orientation? Ruthless, I bet. She doesn’t believe in gentle introductions.”

Silje said nothing. She felt transparent, pinned under Astrid’s gaze and the pulsing neon.

Astrid pushed off the wall and took two decisive steps forward, closing the distance. The smell of tobacco, cheap perfume, and rain hit Silje. “You’re still scared,” Astrid observed, her voice dropping, losing its edge for a moment. “I can smell it on you. Like ozone. It’s okay. Fear’s just energy. You can burn it.”

She reached out, not with Liv’s commanding grip, but with a startling gentleness. Her fingertips, calloused and cool, brushed a stray strand of hair from Silje’s cheek. “Pretty thing like you, all wrapped up in straight-girl angst. It’s a fucking tragedy.”

Something in Astrid’s touch, so different from what she’d known, unlocked a dam inside Silje. A week of confusion, shame, and terrifying arousal surged to the surface. A hot tear broke free and tracked down her cold cheek.

“Hey,” Astrid murmured, her thumb catching the tear. “None of that.” But her eyes had darkened, the curiosity now fully alight with a different kind of interest. The gentleness vanished. Her hand slid behind Silje’s neck, fingers tangling in her hair at the base of her skull. It wasn’t a painful grip. It was possessive. “You want to forget? I can make you forget. Right here. No velvet booths, no audience. Just you, me, and the fucking rain.”

She didn’t wait for an answer. She leaned in and kissed her.

It was nothing like the march. That had been a public spectacle, a frenzied press of lips. This was deliberate. Astrid’s mouth was hot and mobile, tasting of cigarettes and a faint, sugary residue. She kissed with an open-mouthed hunger, her tongue sliding against Silje’s with an insistence that brooked no resistance. It was a kiss that demanded participation, and to her horror, Silje felt herself giving it. Her lips parted wider; her own tentative tongue met Astrid’s in a slick, shocking dance.

Astrid made a low, approving sound in her throat. Her free hand came up, not to caress, but to claim. She palmed Silje’s breast through her shirt and thin bra, her thumb finding the peak and rubbing it to a stiff, aching point. “Fuck, you’re responsive,” she breathed against Silje’s wet lips. “Like a live wire.”

She broke the kiss, her blue eyes blazing. With a sudden, shocking violence, she spun Silje around and shoved her hard against the damp, graffiti-covered brick wall. The impact drove the air from Silje’s lungs. The rough surface scraped her cheek.

“Stay,” Astrid commanded, her voice rough. She kicked Silje’s feet apart with a booted foot. One hand pinned Silje’s hip to the wall. The other dove between her legs from behind, groping her through her jeans with a crude, urgent pressure.

“Please—” Silje gasped, the word shredded by fear and a brutal, surging need.

“You said that last time, too,” Astrid panted in her ear. “And you came anyway, didn’t you? All over Liv’s fingers. I can still smell it on you.” Her fingers scrabbled at the button of Silje’s jeans, ripped the zipper down. The cold alley air hit Silje’s lower back, her exposed ass. Astrid’s hand shoved into her panties, bypassing any pretext of gentleness.

Her fingers were shorter than Liv’s, but clever and ruthless. They found Silje soaked, just as Liv had said she would be. Astrid’s groan was one of pure, greedy triumph. “You dirty little secret,” she hissed. “Your pussy’s dripping for it. You’re fucking addicted already.”

She pushed two fingers inside.

Silje cried out, the sound echoing off the narrow alley walls. The penetration was different—a sharp, corkscrewing motion that sought and found a different depth. Astrid fucked her with a frenetic, punishing rhythm, her knuckles pounding against Silje’s clit with each thrust. The brick wall scraped her skin. The neon buzzed overhead. From the cracked patio door, a burst of laughter and clinking glasses provided a grotesque soundtrack.

“You like being a slut against a wall, don’t you?” Astrid snarled, her breath hot and ragged on Silje’s neck. “You like having your cunt stuffed in an alley where anyone could see?” She curled her fingers, digging into a spot that made Silje’s vision blur. “Come on, princess. Scream for me. Let the whole fucking bar hear what a good little dyke you are.”

The humiliation was fire. The pleasure was a flood. They merged into a single, unstoppable current. Silje’s body tightened, every muscle straining. A sound was tearing its way up her throat—a raw, guttural wail of surrender.

Astrid felt it. She fucked her harder, faster, her own body pressed flush against Silje’s back, grinding against her ass. “That’s it! Give it up! Come all over my fucking hand!”

The climax detonated. It wasn’t the silent, static obliteration of the booth. This was vocal, messy, violent. Silje screamed, a raw, broken sound that was swallowed by the alley and the distant music. Her body convulsed, hips slamming back onto Astrid’s driving fingers, her inner walls clamping down in frantic, rhythmic pulses. Pleasure, sharp as shattered glass, ripped through her, leaving her trembling and weak against the unforgiving brick.

Astrid fucked her through the spasms, drawing out every last shudder until Silje was a sobbing, boneless weight.

Slowly, Astrid pulled her fingers out. They were slick, gleaming in the neon light. She brought them to her own mouth, sucking them clean with a loud, obscene sound. Then, with a laugh that was both triumphant and strangely hollow, she turned Silje around to face her.

Silje could barely stand. Her jeans were around her thighs, her face was streaked with tears and grime, her hair a tangled mess.

Astrid looked at her, her blue eyes bright with a fervor that wasn’t entirely sexual. It was the look of an evangelist who’d just performed a successful exorcism. With her still-wet fingers, she reached out and smeared the moisture across Silje’s cheek and lips, painting her with the evidence of her own degradation.

“There,” Astrid whispered, her thumb dragging across Silje’s bottom lip. “Liberation.”

She stepped back, adjusted her own clothes. She looked at Silje, a broken doll propped against the wall, and her triumphant smile faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by something unreadable. Then she winked, turned, and vanished back into the shadows from whence she came, leaving Silje alone in the cold, neon-drenched alley, the taste of her own arousal bitter on her tongue.
