Chapter 3: Predator's Plaything
The chill of the carpet seeped into Grey’s bare hindpaws, an unwelcome counterpoint to the heat flooding his face. Shirtless, shoeless, stripped down to his worn grey briefs in the oppressive velvet cave of the VIP room, he felt like a specimen pinned under glass. Rufus’s last words – ‘Can’t wait to see what you’re guarding so tight…’ – echoed in his skull, a sickening promise. His tail was a tight coil of tension around the chair leg, his belly felt obscenely bare, and the thin cotton of his briefs was suddenly the flimsiest barrier in the world.
"Socks," Rufus announced, his voice thick with amusement. He tapped the felt beside the dwindling pile of Grey’s chips – little more than coloured plastic now. "Make it easy on yourself, fluffball. Ante up." He pushed his own chips forward with a dismissive flick.
Grey’s trembling paw hovered over the pathetic remnants of his stack. He pushed them forward like he was shoving his own guts onto the table. The hawk dealt the cards with bored efficiency. Grey picked his up, claws scraping the slick surface. A ten and a jack. Off-suit. Weak. His stomach clenched. He glanced at Rufus, who was studying his own cards with theatrical disinterest, a faint smirk playing on his muzzle. The polar bear’s massive frame radiated heat beside him, a constant, oppressive presence.
"Check," Grey rasped, his voice barely audible over the soft jazz and the hawk stirring his drink.
Rufus chuckled. "Playing scared, kitten? Smart." He tossed a single chip onto the pile. "Bet." The amount was small, almost insulting. A nudge. Testing the waters Grey no longer had.
Grey swallowed, the phantom taste of Rufus’s tongue still clinging. He called. The flop came: King, seven, two. Rags. Grey’s ten-high felt pathetic. He checked again, folding in on himself, trying to disappear into the plush leather.
Rufus didn’t even look at the board. He pushed another small stack forward. "Bet." His red eyes slid sideways, fixing on Grey’s bare thigh where it met the chair. "Getting drafty down there?"
Hopelessness washed over Grey. He had nothing. He was going to lose his socks. Then… the briefs. He pushed his final chips forward, the movement jerky, defeated. "Call."
The turn card flipped. A four of hearts. Meaningless. Grey was already sunk. He closed his eyes, bracing for the command.
"River," the hawk intoned. Another deuce. Useless.
Rufus flipped his cards lazily: Ace high. He hadn’t even had a pair. He’d bluffed Grey out of his socks with air. "Socks, little cougar," Rufus purred, leaning back expansively, his belly pressing against the table. "Peel 'em off. Let’s see those paws."
Humiliation burned hotter than shame. Grey bent, the motion awkward and exposing. His claws fumbled with the elastic cuffs of his thin socks. They were damp with nervous sweat. He peeled one off, then the other, dropping them onto the growing pile of his discarded clothes. His bare feet, claws exposed, felt impossibly vulnerable on the plush carpet. He curled his toes, trying to hide them.
Rufus made a low, appreciative sound. "Cute paws. Soft." He gestured to the deck. "Deal." His gaze never left Grey, a predator savoring the final cornering of its prey. "Final hand before the main event, hmm? Gotta know what I’m bidding on." He pushed a stack of chips forward – larger this time. The ante. His red eyes gleamed. "Your underwear, Grey. Right here, right now. The briefs. Against…" He paused, letting the heavy silence build, broken only by the clink of ice in the hawk’s glass. "...my hand. Simple."
The bottom dropped out of Grey’s world. He stared at the pile of his clothes – shirt, jeans, shoes, socks – a monument to his humiliation. The thin grey cotton briefs were all that remained. His shield. His secret. Panic clawed up his throat. He wanted to vomit. To scream. To run naked into the pulsating chaos of the main club. But Rufus’s presence was a physical wall, his dominance an inescapable cage. The hawk dealt the cards. Grey picked his up with numb claws.
Ace of diamonds. King of hearts. His breath hitched. Ace-King. A monster hand. Real, solid hope flared, fierce and desperate. He could win! He could win back… well, not his dignity, but maybe his clothes? A chance to escape? He clutched the cards like talismans.
Rufus glanced at his own cards, his expression unreadable. He pushed a significant stack into the center. "Bet." The amount was huge. More than Grey had wagered all night. A test. Or a trap.
Grey’s heart hammered against his ribs. He had Ace-King! He had to call. "Call," he choked out, shoving his metaphorical chips – his underwear – into the pot. There was nothing else.
The flop came down: Queen of spades, ten of hearts, six of clubs. Not great for Ace-King, but not terrible. He still had two overcards. He checked, his pulse roaring in his ears.
Rufus didn’t hesitate. He pushed another mountain of chips forward. "Bet." His voice was flat, cool. Confident.
Doubt gnawed at Grey. Did Rufus have a set? A made hand? The bet was enormous. But he had Ace-King! He couldn’t fold now. Not with his briefs in the pot. "Call," he whispered, the word tasting like ash.
The turn card: a three of diamonds. Utterly useless. Grey’s hope flickered violently. He checked again, his paw trembling violently on the felt.
Rufus leaned forward, his massive shadow engulfing Grey. He studied the cougar, not the board. A slow, knowing smile spread across his broad muzzle. "All in," he rumbled. He shoved his entire remaining stack forward, a towering edifice of plastic wealth. "Your briefs, Grey. Against my entire stack. Right now." His red eyes burned into Grey’s hazel ones. "Or fold. Slink outta here bare-assed." He chuckled, low and dark. "Your choice, fluff. Show me what that Ace-King is really worth."
The air vanished. Grey stared at his cards. Ace-King. The best hand he’d seen all night. Against Rufus’s massive all-in bet. Rufus could be bluffing. He had to be bluffing! He’d bluffed before. The pot was everything – his clothes, his escape, his last shred of covering. If he folded now, he lost everything anyway. Naked humiliation. If he called and lost… he lost the briefs. Right here. Right now.
The silence stretched, thick and suffocating. The hawk stopped stirring his drink. The panther leaned forward, elbows on the table. Rufus just watched, a glacier of yellow-tinged white fur and predatory patience.
With a sound that was half-whimper, half-groan, Grey pushed his cards forward, face down. He couldn’t speak. He just nodded jerkily. Call.
Rufus’s smile turned triumphant, feral. He flipped his cards without ceremony: Pocket Queens. He’d flopped a set. Grey’s Ace-King was crushed, dead before the flop. The air rushed from Grey’s lungs in a strangled gasp. He hadn’t just lost. He’d been slaughtered.
"Oof," Rufus murmured, the sound dripping with false sympathy. He slowly, deliberately, raked in the colossal pot, his chips clattering like mocking applause. Then he leaned back, steepling his massive paws, his red gaze fixed unblinkingly on Grey’s lap. "Briefs. Off. Now. Don’t make me ask twice, kitten."
The command landed like a physical blow. Grey flinched, his entire body rigid. His paws, slick with cold sweat, moved as if through tar. They hooked into the elastic waistband of his grey briefs. The cotton felt desperately thin. He hesitated, staring at the crushed velvet pattern of the couch cushion opposite, his vision blurring. The air conditioner hummed. The cigar smoke stung his eyes.
"Now," Rufus growled, the single word cracking like a whip, shattering the last fragile resistance.
Grey squeezed his eyes shut. A choked sob escaped him. He pushed the briefs down over his hips. They caught on the swell of his belly, then slid down his thighs, snagging briefly on his knees before pooling around his ankles on the plush carpet. The chill air hit his completely exposed groin fur, his small sheath pale and utterly vulnerable against the dark grey fur of his lower belly. He was naked. Utterly, completely naked in the opulent den of predators. Shame, scalding and absolute, engulfed him. He couldn’t look down. Couldn’t look at anyone. He hunched forward, wrapping his arms over his exposed belly in a futile attempt at modesty, his tail curled so tightly around his leg it hurt.
Rufus let out a long, low whistle. "Well, well," he rumbled, the sound vibrating the air. "Shy doesn't even begin to cover it, does it, fluff?" His red gaze lingered, tracing the lines of Grey’s exposed body with unhurried, predatory appraisal. "Little kitty’s all out of chips and clothes." He pushed his chair back with a heavy scrape, the sheer bulk of him rising like a tidal wave. "Time to collect my winnings properly."
He stepped around the table. Grey shrank back, pressing himself into the leather cushions, eyes wide with terror. Rufus loomed over him, blotting out the dim light. The scent of him – musk, cigar, raw power – was overwhelming. Before Grey could flinch away, a massive paw clamped down on his wrists, pinning them effortlessly together above his head against the back of the plush leather couch. Grey gasped, a thin, desperate sound, struggling instinctively against the iron grip.
"Easy," Rufus murmured, his other paw settling heavily on Grey’s bare hip, holding him flat against the cushions. The touch was searing, invasive. "Just relax and enjoy the prize, kitten." He leaned down, his immense head blocking out the world. Grey could only stare, paralyzed, at the cavernous muzzle descending. Rufus’s hot, whiskey-laced breath washed over Grey’s lower belly, smelling of stale tobacco and predatory intent. Grey whimpered, a high-pitched keening sound trapped in his throat.
Then the rough, wet heat of Rufus’s tongue made contact. Not gentle. Not curious. Deliberate. Possessive. It traced the outline of Grey’s small, exposed sheath with rough, deliberate strokes. The sensation was horrifically intimate, a violation more profound than anything before. Grey cried out, a strangled sound of shock and shame, trying to arch away, but Rufus’s grip on his wrists and hip was absolute, pinning him like a butterfly. The polar bear’s tongue, broad and shockingly abrasive, explored the sensitive folds of fur and skin with a low, rumbling growl of satisfaction that Grey felt vibrating through his own pinned body. It mapped the contours, traced the rim, a relentless, wet pressure that left Grey trembling uncontrollably, his whimpers muffled by the crushed velvet cushion his face was pressed into. The cold air on his wet fur only heightened the violation, the contrast unbearable. Rufus didn't hurry. He took his time, claiming the prize he'd won, demonstrating with visceral clarity why he was the apex predator in this velvet den. Grey’s world shrank to the searing heat of the tongue, the crushing weight of the paw on his hip, the iron vise on his wrists, and the suffocating, inescapable shame.
