Chapter 2: Fall into Misfortune (The Hole)
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the quaint cobblestone streets and winding paths. The night had descended upon the sleepy college town, shrouding the world in darkness. The mysterious old library stood sentinel, its looming shadow stretching across the moonlit lawn.
Natalie found herself wandering aimlessly among the towering shelves, her fingers tracing along the spines of ancient tomes. She stumbled upon an isolated section tucked away behind mahogany doors, adorned with a brass plaque bearing the words "Restricted Section".
"what the hell, I've transferred to Hogwarts."
As Natalie gingerly pushed open the heavy door, she felt a wave of apprehension wash over her. Inside, the Restricted Section was dimly lit, with only scattered beams of light filtering through dusty windows. The musty smell of old paper hung thick in the air, and every creak and crackle seemed amplified in the hushed atmosphere.
Natalie paused, taking a deep breath before venturing further into the enigmatic realm. The maze of narrow aisles stretched out before her, lined with towering shelves reaching up to the high ceiling.
Each shelf held hundreds of untouched volumes, waiting centuries for an eager scholar to discover their secrets. With a trembling hand, Natalie pulled out a book bound in cracked leather, its title faded and barely legible: "Chronicles of Shadows: Secrets of the Undead."
With trepidation, she leafed through the brittle pages, the cryptic symbols and images mesmerizing her. She stumbled upon a passage discussing immortals who seduced multiple brides, often in their prime.
"Girls between sixteen and twenty-five," she read aloud, a chill running down her spine.
"Damn," muttered Natalie, flipping through the pages. "Why does everything have to come with a bloody expiration date?"
"Ah, you found the restricted section, I see," said a velvety voice beside her. Startled, Natalie turned to see a man with silver hair, dressed impeccably in a black suit. His striking eyes were a piercing shade of green, and his presence seemed to fill the room.
His voice carried an aura of sophistication and power. "I am Mortimer Galantis, the caretaker of this magnificent library."
He extended a gloved hand, which Natalie accepted tentatively. "Nice to meet you, Mr. Galantis. I'm Natalie."
"Please, call me Mortimer," he replied smoothly. "I've observed you, Natalie, poring over books and unraveling mysteries. You possess a rare hunger for knowledge, and I can sense your thirst for adventure."
Natalie blushed, surprised by his observation.
"I didn't expect to find a library guardian so... dapper."
Mortimer chuckled, his eyes dancing with amusement. "A gentleman should always be well-dressed, especially when surrounded by such an abundance of knowledge."
"From what I've gathered," Natalie replied, placing the book back on the shelf, "this area holds a lot of secretive knowledge. Why restrict access to it?"
Mortimer's gaze shifted toward the dimly lit aisles before returning to Natalie.
"his brides girls may be stopped if people knew."
Mortimer explained patiently, "Access to these texts is limited primarily due to their sensitive nature. Some contain information that may not be suitable for every reader. However, I will gladly assist you in finding the knowledge you seek."
Natalie nodded gratefully, feeling the weight of responsibility settle heavily. "Thank you, Mortimer. I'm researching the rumored vampire on campus."
Mortimer's eyes widened perceptibly, and his posture stiffened subtly. "I see. Well, this section contains meticulous records detailing the history of supernatural beings, including vampires.
"you must mean the Galantis family?"
"The Galantis family was notorious for their dark deeds," Mortimer shared. "They had a reputation for kidnapping innocent young girls and making them their brides. The vampire in question is said to be a descendent of the infamous Count Galantis himself."
Natalie swallowed hard, her pulse quickening at the mention of forced brides. "I hope we can put an end to this monster. It's horrifying to imagine the pain and suffering caused by such a vile being."
Mortimer nodded gravely, his emerald eyes flashing with determination.
"would it be possible to get a vial of your virgin mound?"
"Uh, what?" Natalie exclaimed, taken aback by Mortimer's sudden request. "Sorry, I don't understand."
Mortimer cleared his throat, his demeanor shifting abruptly. "Forgive my bluntness, Natalie. As a librarian, I've spent countless hours sifting through these ancient texts, attempting to decode their secrets.
"if we give the creature what it wants it may stop harming others."
Mortimer eyes focused up and down the virginal coed.
His gaze lingering on her supple neck, his thoughts wandered to a time long ago when he roamed the lands as a nobleman and a vicious predator. But as he looked at Natalie, he saw a spark of courage and intelligence that made him pause.
"You mentioned a cure for this vampire," Natalie prodded, trying to maintain professionalism despite the uncomfortable situation. "Could you elaborate on that?"
Mortimer stroked his chin thoughtfully, considering the best approach to answer her question.
"basically giving you as a sacrifice if only your juices, no real harm to you."
Mortimer offered an explanation, a hint of reluctance coloring his voice. "The vampire's weakness lies in a concoction known as 'virgin blood elixir.' This potion requires the essence of a pure maiden who hasn't yet lost her innocence."
Natalie stared at him blankly, processing the implications of his words. "Are you suggesting something unspeakable?"
Mortimer hesitated, his gaze wavering briefly.
His lips parched.
"I apologize if my suggestion offends you, Natalie.
But consider the potential consequences of this vampire's actions.
Dozens of young women might fall victim to its insatiable appetite.
By providing the vampire with what it desires, we create a chance to save these innocent lives."
Mortimer's words weighed heavily on Natalie's heart.
She knew the importance of stopping the vampire but hesitated at the idea of surrendering her purity, even for such a noble cause.
Her face reddened as she searched for the right words. "Mortimer, I appreciate your dedication to protecting the community, but asking me to risk my honor like that... it seems unfair."
Mortimer's eyes softened, and he took a step closer to Natalie. "I understand your concerns, Natalie. I never meant to suggest that you should bear all the burden alone. We could explore alternative methods to retrieve the needed essence without compromising your integrity."
"Really?" Natalie responded, relief washing over her.
"you aren't the only virginal coed on campus."
"Thank you, Mortimer," Natalie breathed. "I suppose we could look for another way to extract the essence."
"you could gather a group of girls to select from."
Mortimer suggested cautiously, sensing Natalie's hesitation. "If we work together, we might be able to find a solution that respects your boundaries and still addresses the threat."
Natalie mulled over his proposal, her eyes darting around the dimly lit aisle. "I guess that could work," she agreed warily. "But where do we start?"
Natalie began secretly questioning the librarian.
Mortimer revealed a bittersweet tale, painting a vivid picture of his ancestors and their tragic lineage. Each encounter with Mortimer illuminated the depths of his expertise and insight, drawing Natalie deeper into his world. The mystery surrounding the vampire became increasingly enticing, pulling her into a web of intrigue and danger.
Natalie could sense the librarian was holding back, initially she felt it was his attraction to her.
Yet now she realized it was something entirely different, something much darker and far more disturbing.
"Listen, Natalie," Mortimer began, leading her towards a seldom-used corner of the Restricted Section. "I feel obliged to share a rather unsettling fact with you. My ancestor, Count Galantis, was responsible for the creation of the vampire we're trying to stop. The Count was a ruthless and cruel man, whose legacy is tainted by his obsession with immortality."
"What does that make you?" Natalie blurted out, unable to hide her shock.
