Chapter 3: Struggles (Climbing Out of the Hole)
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the quaint cobblestone streets and winding paths, the trio of friends found themselves huddled around a flickering campfire.
The fire danced and crackled, its warm glow casting an ethereal light on their faces.
Natalie, Madison, and Alison leaned in closely, their whispered exchanges echoing the urgency of their mission.
"A undead can seduce multiple females during periods of sexual awakening, specifically during the girls 16th to 25th year." Natalie reads for the 200th time.
"
As the three friends continued their conversation, Natalie absently toyed with the hem of her shirt. Her heart raced as memories of Mortimer's revelation swirled in her mind. "You know, I can't shake off the feeling that Mortimer knows more than he's letting on," she confessed, her voice low and strained.
Madison glanced at Natalie, her brows furrowing in concern. "You think so? But why would he lie about it?"
Madison mused, chewing on the end of her pen. "After all, he did show genuine concern for our safety."
"True," Natalie agreed, staring into the flames. "He seems genuinely invested in helping us. But the secrecy surrounding his ancestry gives me the chills."
Alison frowned, her nose wrinkling skeptically. "Look, guys, I don't know if this is relevant, but I've heard of this Galantis family.
"400 years of seducing young women in the town, in one year 200 years ago there were 85 births in the town, 44 were Galantis."
Natalie couldn't suppress a gasp as she finished reading, her eyes wide with horror. Alison and Madison exchanged worried looks, their expressions mirroring the shock Natalie felt.
"What do we do now?" Madison asked, her voice barely audible. "How can we trust Mortimer after learning this?"
Natalie shook her head, her thoughts swirling with confusion. "I can't believe it either, but Mortimer seems dedicated to helping us.
Maybe he feels guilty about his heritage," Alison chimed in, her voice quivering slightly. "We shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet."
"Yeah," Natalie agreed reluctantly. "He's been really helpful thus far. And he's not exactly tied to the vampire. But then again, he's a direct descendant, or whatever."
"This is unbelievable," Madison grumbled, tossing her long blonde hair over her shoulder. "A century-old vampire lurking around our campus, sucking the life out of innocent girls?"
Madison groaned, slumping against the tree trunk. "It sounds straight out of an urban legend."
"Well, it's true," Natalie replied grimly, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "And we need to stop it."
The tension between them intensified, the air thick with anticipation.
"I'm starting to worry about Natalie," Madison whispered softly, her voice trembling slightly.
"I mean, she's been spending a lot of time with Mortimer lately."
Alison tilted her head, her gaze drifting towards the distant trees. "It's not like we're getting anywhere with this vampire business," she retorted, her tone defensive. "Mortimer's got resources and knowledge we could use."
"But what if he's manipulating her?" Madison pressed, her brows furrowing with concern.
"what if he is?" Alison interjects,"he wants to have sex with a virgin? So what?"
Natalie swiftly cuts her off, her cheeks heating up. "Mortimer's talking about extracting something called 'essence' from a virgin," she explains, averting her gaze. "It's apparently the key to creating a potion that can weaken the vampire."
Madison stares at Natalie in disbelief. "You're kidding. That's absurd."
Alison smirks, her eyes twinkling mischievously.
"sounds to me like our vampire is horny."
Alison grinned, nudging Natalie playfully. "Hey, if he just wants sex, let's invite him to a party. Get him laid. Problem solved."
Natalie shot Alison a stern glance, her voice cold. "Seriously? You don't think this is serious? People are dying. We need to focus."
"we are each virgin girls Nat. Let's give em a good rowe."
As the night progressed, the friends found themselves engrossed in a heated debate centered around Natalie's connection with Mortimer. The fire crackled and popped, casting distorted shadows of their animated gestures onto the forest floor. Their voices echoed through the trees, carrying traces of uncertainty and fear.
"I think Nat's just doing research," Alison insisted, her hands gesturing wildly. "Mortimer's our only lead, and she's gathering intel."
"Yeah, I agree," added Natalie, her voice steady and determined.
"I'm not going to rush things. We need to figure out how to deal with this vampire problem first."
"And we need to trust that Mortimer's on our side," Alison reminded them, crossing her arms defensively. "He's done nothing to betray us, and he's been pretty helpful so far."
"But he lied to us!" Madison protested, her eyes flashing with anger. "He kept crucial information about his ancestry hidden until we pried it out of him."
Madison countered, her voice laced with suspicion. "What else is he hiding?"
Alison sighed deeply, her gaze wandering across the moonlit landscape. "Maybe he just wanted to wait for the right moment to tell us."
"Or maybe he was hoping I wouldn't ask any questions," Natalie murmured, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Either way, we need to tread carefully."
"I think he wants your essence for sexual purpose."
Alison giggles, clapping her hands gleefully. "Isn't that funny? Our little librarian with the big libido."
Natalie shoots Alison a harsh glare, her patience wearing thin. "I swear, Alison, sometimes your humor just doesn't land."
"You're right, Nat," Alison says, her smile fading slightly. "Let's focus on the task at hand. How do we find this vampire?"
"I think Mortimer can help us," Natalie replies, her eyes meeting Madison's.
"He's already provided valuable insights into the vampire's origins. Maybe he can guide us to its location."
Before anyone can respond, a gust of wind rustles through the leaves overhead, sending ripples of whispers echoing through the silent woods. The friends exchange uneasy glances, their senses heightened by the eerie atmosphere.
"But how do we approach him?" Madison asks, her voice cracking under pressure.
"Should we confront him directly?"
Natalie pauses, considering the possibility. "No, we shouldn't rush things. I think we should try to gain more information about the vampire before approaching Mortimer with our suspicions."
"Agreed," Alison nods, her expression thoughtful. "We need to stay sharp and avoid putting ourselves in unnecessary danger."
As morning breaks, the friends decide to split up and conduct separate investigations. Natalie returns to the library, seeking answers in the vast collection of forbidden knowledge.
As she walks through the dimly lit halls, she finds herself glancing at every shadowy corner, half expecting to see Mortimer emerge, his eyes glowing green with hidden motives. She tries to shrug off the feeling, reminding herself that she needs his help to uncover the truth behind the vampire's existence.
"Well, look who decided to grace us with her presence," a familiar voice taunts from behind a towering stack of books. Natalie turns to see Alison leaning against the wall, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
"Why so serious?" Alison teases, raising an eyebrow. "You almost seemed scared."
"Oh, please," Natalie scoffs, rolling her eyes. "I'm just trying to gather some useful information here."
"I can lend a hand," Alison offers, her tone playful. "What exactly are you looking for?"
Natalie sighs, scanning the sprawling rows of bookshelves towering around them.
"I'm trying to track down anything related to the vampire's history in the area. Anything that might point us toward its current location."
Alison steps forward, her eyes scanning the maze of volumes. "That's going to take forever," she says, biting her lip. "There must be a faster way to narrow down the search."
"We could consult the local folklore," Natalie suggests, turning toward the dusty section of ancient manuscripts.
"Perhaps there are tales or legends that shed light on the vampire's past."
Alison follows her, her curiosity piqued. "Good thinking, Nat. Let's dig in."
They spend hours combing through the ancient texts, uncovering obscure references to vampires and their rumored ties to the town. As the afternoon sun casts its golden rays onto the library windows, they discover a chilling pattern.
"Look at this," Natalie exclaims, her fingers tracing the faded ink on the page.
"It's a list of names connected to the Galantis family."
"And look," Alison adds, pointing excitedly, "there's even a note mentioning a possible burial site."
Their hearts pounding with anticipation, the two friends scan the text feverishly, piecing together the cryptic clues that lay scattered among the pages. As the afternoon sun casts its golden rays onto the library windows, they become increasingly absorbed in their quest.
In the distance, the faint sound of footsteps echoes through the quiet hallways.
Natalie's pulse quickens as she scans the shelves around her, instinctively reaching for the nearest object—a dense, leather-bound volume titled "Arcane Mysteries of Vampirism."
She clutches the heavy book tightly, her knuckles whitening with tension. As the footsteps draw nearer, the air buzzes with an electric charge, and Natalie feels a sudden wave of apprehension wash over her.
Suddenly, a shadowy figure materializes from the corner, and Natalie catches her breath. Her body stiffens with surprise as she recognizes Mortimer's enigmatic form.
His eyes flash green, reflecting the dancing flames of the fire nearby. He raises an eyebrow, his expression shifting between amusement and annoyance. "Ah, my dear students," he says, stepping closer, "you seem to be up to no good."
Alison feigns innocence, her laughter ringing out like silver bells. "Us? Of course not. Just taking a stroll through the stacks, exploring the wonders of ancient literature."
Natalie tightens her grip on the book, her voice wavering slightly.
"Actually, we're looking for some old folklore," she explains, a hint of defiance creeping into her tone. "We thought it might offer some insight into the vampire situation around here."
Mortimer chuckles, his deep baritone reverberating through the hushed library. "Folly, indeed," he mutters sarcastically. "Your relentless pursuit of supernatural mysteries will surely bring you nothing but heartache."
Alison arches an eyebrow, her gaze fixated on Mortimer.
