Chapter 16: The Debt Paid in Full
The elevator descended in a hum of manufactured silence. The mirrored walls trapped them in infinite repetitions: a hollow-eyed man clutching a bundle of clothes over his nakedness, a woman in a cheap black dress staring straight ahead, her reflection a pale smudge against the brass. Vishal’s breathing was loud, ragged, as if he’d been running.Anupama’s was unnervingly quiet. She watched the numbers above the door blink downward: 40… 39… 38…
He spoke first, his voice scraped raw.“My car is in the basement.”
She said nothing.
“I’ll take you home.”
“I have no home,” she replied, the statement flat, factual. The bungalow with Anshul was a shell. The hotel was Swati’s domain. The city outside was just geography. The elevator reached the parking level with a soft chime. The doors opened onto concrete coolness and the faint smell of motor oil. Vishal moved quickly, shrugging into his wrinkled shirt, stepping into his trousers, not bothering with underwear or socks. He fumbled with his belt as he led the way to a sleek, dark sedan. He unlocked it with a click that echoed in the cavernous space. She slid into the passenger seat. The leather was cold and smooth. He got in, started the engine, and drove up the ramp into the night. The city lights streamed past the windows, neon smears against the black.
They didn’t speak for twenty blocks. The only sound was the purr of the engine and the whisper of tires on asphalt. He drove with a tense precision, his knuckles white on the steering wheel.
“She won’t stop,” he said finally, as if continuing a conversation they’d been having. “You understand that, right? It’s not about the money anymore. It’s about the process. The degradation. She’ll find new ways.Forever.”
Anupama looked out the window. “Then you should have stayed. You’re her favorite toy.”
He flinched as if struck. “It’s not a game to me. Not anymore.”
“It never was to me,” she said, still watching the city blur.“It was survival. Then it was… something else. Now it’s ashes.”
He took a turn, heading not toward the distant suburbs where Anshul’s bungalow lay, but into an older, wealthier neighborhood of quiet streets and high walls. “I’m not taking you back there.”
“I didn’t ask you to.”
He pulled into the driveway of a modern, minimalist house, all sharp angles and glass. A security light flicked on, bathing the carved teak door in a sterile glow.He killed the engine. The sudden silence was absolute.“This is yours,” she stated.
“One of them.” He didn’t move. “I can’t… I can’t be alone tonight.”
She turned to look at him.In the dashboard’s faint light, he looked ancient. The confident planes of his face were sunken with exhaustion, his eyes pools of shame. The beast was gone, the businessman was broken. What remained was just a man, gutted. “And you think I can?”
“I think,” he said, struggling for the words, “that you are the only person on this earth who understands what just happened in that room. What it did. I need…” He trailed off, unable to articulate the need. She understood. It wasn’t comfort he sought. It was witness.A shared burden. To be alone with the memory would be to go mad.She opened her car door. The night air was cool, smelling of jasmine from a nearby hedge. He followed, unlocking the front door. The interior was what she expected: cold elegance. Polished concrete floors, stark white walls, a single monumental painting of a geometric fracture. No photographs. No personal artifacts. It was a cell for a specter. He led her past a sitting room, down a hallway, into a bedroom dominated by a large platform bed with immaculate white linens.
“There’s a bathroom through there,” he said, nodding to a door. “You can… clean up.”
She walked into the bathroom. It was all slate gray tiles and stainless steel. Her reflection in the vast mirror was a shock. The black dress hung like a sack. Her hair was a wild tangle. Her eyes were dark, but clear, frighteningly clear. She saw the faint, purpling marks on her neck, the slight puffiness of her lips. She looked used, but not defeated. She looked… aware.
She turned on the faucet, washed her face with cold water, ran wet fingers through her hair. She peeled off the cheap dress and stood naked under the clinical light. The bruises on her hips and thighs were like violent blossoms. She touched one, pressed until the pain was sharp and clarifying. She was still here. Her body, however marked, was still her own.
When she walked back into the bedroom, he was sitting on the edge of the bed, head in his hands. He had taken off his shirt. His back was a landscape of tense muscle and old scars. He heard her and looked up.
Seeing her naked in the doorway, in the context of his sterile sanctuary, seemed to short-circuit his despair. His gaze traveled over her, not with Swati’s calculating ownership or Anshul’s vacant lust, but with a raw, weary hunger. It was the hunger of a drowning man for solid ground, even if that ground was scorched earth.
“Come here,” he said, his voice thick. She didn’t hesitate. There was no pretense left, no game to play. She walked to him, stopping between his knees. He looked up at her, his dark eyes searching her face. He brought his hands up, but instead of grabbing, he simply rested them on her hips, his thumbs stroking the tops of her bruises. The touch was startling in its tenderness.
“I’m sorry,” he breathed, the words seeming to tear from his throat.“For the warehouse. For… for bringing you into that room with her. For every fucking thing.”
“Your apology is worthless,” she said quietly, not unkindly. It was a fact.“It changes nothing. It heals nothing.”
“I know.” He leaned forward, his forehead coming to rest against her stomach. The warmth of his skin, the slight tremor in his shoulders, the sheer human weight of him felt monumental. He was crying, silent, shuddering tears that soaked into her skin. The powerful Vishal, brought to his knees not by force, but by the accumulated poison of his own life.
Her hands came up, almost of their own volition, and rested on his head. His hair was thick, soft. She didn’t stroke it.She just held him there, an anchor as he shook.
After a long moment, he pulled back, wiping his face with the back of his hand, angry at his display. His need shifted, mutated. The tenderness burned away, leaving a more fundamental desperation. His hands slid from her hips to her ass, gripping, pulling her closer. His mouth found her lower belly, kissed it, then lower, his breath hot against her mound. He looked up, his eyes pleading and defiant. “Let me… let me do this. For you.Not for her.Not for him. For you.”
It was another kind of transaction. Not power, but penance. Not ownership, but obliteration. She nodded, once.
He pulled her down onto the bed, laying her back on the crisp white sheets. He moved between her legs, spreading them, his gaze devouring her. He didn’t speak. He simply lowered his head. His tongue was different this time. In the warehouse, it had been an instrument of rage. In Swati’s suite, a tool of submission. Now, it was deliberate, focused, exploratory. He licked her slowly, from her entrance to her clit, circling, tasting her with an intense concentration that was almost clinical. He was learning her, mapping the geography of her response.Anupama let her head fall back. She stared at the plain white ceiling. This wasn’t passion. It was archaeology. He was sifting through the wreckage, trying to find a piece of her that wasn’t shattered.
His tongue settled on her clit, applying a steady, insistent pressure. He flicked it, circled it, sucked it gently. His hands held her thighs apart, his thumbs pressing into her inner muscles. A low, reluctant heat began to uncoil in her belly, separate from her mind, a purely animal reaction. Her breath hitched. He felt it. He doubled his efforts, his mouth working her with a skill that was undeniable. He slid two fingers inside her, curling them upward, finding a spot that made her hips jerk. He pumped his fingers slowly, in counterpoint to the relentless focus of his tongue.
“Come on,” he muttered against her, his voice muffled, desperate.“Come for me.Let me have this.Just this.”
His words broke the strange spell. This was still about him.His absolution. His need to prove he could give as well as take. The heat in her belly crystallized into a sharp, brittle anger. She wouldn’t give him this victory. Not like this. But her body betrayed her. The combined rhythm of his tongue and fingers, the sheer physical expertise, was pushing her toward an edge she didn’t want to approach.A tension gathered, deep and inevitable. She tried to fight it, to retreat into the cold corner of her mind, but the sensation was too powerful, too specific. It built, a coil tightening in her core, spreading through her limbs.
She came with a harsh, choked cry, her back arching off the bed, her hands fisting in the white sheets. The orgasm was not a release but an invasion, a seismic event that shook her without cleansing her. Pleasure and violation were fused into one blinding wave.As the contractions subsided, he lifted his head. His mouth glistened. His eyes were dark with a pathetic hope. “Did you…?”
She shoved him away, hard. She scrambled off the bed, her legs unsteady. “Don’t.”
He sat back on his heels, confusion wiping the hope from his face. “What?”
“Don’t think that meant anything.” She walked to the window, wrapping her arms around herself. The city lights blinked indifferently.“It was a reflex. Like a knee jerking.”
He climbed off the bed, standing naked and vulnerable in the middle of the room. “Anupama—”
“No.” She turned to face him. The cold fire was back in her veins, burning away the last of the unwanted sensation.“You don’t get to say my name like that. You don’t get to pretend this is a connection. We are two ghosts haunting the same crime scene. That’s all.”
His jaw tightened. The shame curdled into something else—frustration, a last vestige of pride. He strode to her, grabbed her shoulders. “Then what is this? Why are you here?”
“Because I have nowhere else to go!” she shouted, the truth ripping out of her. “Because the world you and Swati and Anshul built is a prison, and every exit leads back to a warden! Because for one second in that fucking hotel, I had a gun in my hand, and now I’m disarmed again!” She was shaking.“You asked for a witness?Fine. You have one. I witness that you are a sad, broken man who gets off on breaking things he can’t fix.”
The words hung in the air, brutal and true. His grip on her shoulders tightened, then his mouth crashed down on hers.It wasn’t a kiss.It was a collision. A battle for dominance where no dominance was possible. His tongue forced its way into her mouth, tasting of her and salt and despair. She bit him. He grunted, pulled back, then kissed her again, harder, one hand tangling in her hair to hold her still. She didn’t fight it. She leaned into it, meeting his fury with her own.Their teeth clacked. Their breaths mingled, ragged and hot. His hands slid from her shoulders down her back, over the curve of her ass, pulling her against him.His erection pressed against her stomach, insistent, a blunt demand.
He broke the kiss, breathing heavily.“You want a gun?” he growled. “Here.”
He turned her around, bending her over the cool glass of the floor-to-ceiling window. Her cheek pressed against the smooth surface. The city sprawled below, a galaxy of indifferent lights. He positioned himself behind her, one hand gripping her hip, the other guiding his cock. He pushed into her without ceremony.
She was still slick from her climax, and he slid in with a single, deep stroke that forced a gasp from her lungs. He filled her completely, a different fullness than before—not violent, but absolute, inevitable. He began to fuck her, his rhythm hard and relentless, but not cruel. It was purgatorial. Each thrust was a hammer blow driving a nail into the coffin of the night, of their shared damnation. His body slapped against hers, the sound raw and obscene in the quiet room. His fingers dug into her hips, not to hurt, but to anchor himself.
Anupama stared down at the distant, moving cars. She felt split in two. One part was here, feeling the mechanical piston of him inside her, the stretch, the friction, the building heat that was, against all will, beginning to spark again. The other part was far away, watching these two broken creatures enact this final, useless ritual.
“Tell me you feel nothing,” he challenged, his voice strained with effort.“Tell me this is just a reflex.”
She couldn’t speak. Her body was clenching around him, responding to the punishing rhythm. A second, darker wave was gathering, born not of skill but of sheer, desperate friction. She tried to hold it back, to remain aloof, but her hips began to move, meeting his thrusts.
He felt her surrender and groaned, his pace becoming more erratic, more intense. One hand snaked around her waist, his fingers finding her clit.He rubbed rough, quick circles over the sensitive nub.
It was too much. The internal pressure, the external stimulation, the sheer exhausting madness of it all crashed together. A second orgasm tore through her, brutal and convulsing. She screamed, a raw, ragged sound that fogged the glass in front of her. Her inner muscles clamped down on him, milking him relentlessly. The sensation broke him. With a guttural shout that was more pain than pleasure, he drove into her one last time and came, his body shuddering violently against hers. He pulsed deep inside her, his release hot and sudden. He stayed there, buried to the hilt, his forehead resting between her shoulder blades, his breath coming in harsh, wet sobs.
They stayed like that for a long minute, glued together by sweat and spent passion and mutual ruin. Slowly, he softened and slipped out of her. A trickle of warmth traced a path down her inner thigh. He stepped back. She straightened, her body feeling liquid and used. She turned to face him. They were both breathless, naked, standing in a pool of light from the moon. The marks on their bodies were like a shared language of damage.
The marks on their bodies were like a shared language of damage. Silence pooled in the room, thick and suffocating, broken only by the ragged symphony of their breathing. Vishal finally turned away, his movement stiff, and walked naked toward the bathroom. The door clicked shut. A moment later, the shower hissed to life.
Anupama remained by the window. Her skin felt foreign, a map of sensations she didn’t own—the chill of the glass, the sticky dry of his cum on her thigh, the deep, throbbing ache where he’d been. She saw the faint, perfect oval of her breath on the windowpane appear and vanish. Appear and vanish. Down in the city, life continued, a stream of anonymous light. She was a statue in a forgotten museum.
The shower ran for a long time. When he emerged, a white towel tied low on his hips, his hair was dark with moisture. He looked cleaned but not cleansed. He avoided her eyes, moving to a sleek dresser and pulling out a black t-shirt and sweatpants. He tossed a similar set, grey and soft, onto the bed near her.
“You should shower,” he said, his voice sandpapered. “The water’s hot.”
It was such a mundane thing to say. She nodded, a mechanical dip of her chin. She walked past him, taking the clothes, and entered the steam-filled bathroom. She stood under the scalding spray until her skin turned pink, scrubbing with a bar of unscented soap that lifted the smell of him, of Swati’s perfume, of the stale hotel air, from her body. The water swirling at her feet was a murky grey. She watched it disappear down the drain.
Wrapped in the soft grey fabric, she found him in the kitchen. He was pouring amber whiskey from a bottle into two heavy glasses. The clinical neatness of the house was unsettling. No mail on the counters, no dishes in the sink. A crypt.
“Drink,” he said, pushing a glass toward her.
She took it. The first sip was fire, tracing a welcome burn down her throat. She took another. He knocked his back in one go, grimacing, then poured another. They stood there, two ghosts at a polished granite island.
“What happens now?” she asked. Her voice sounded small.
“I don’t know.” He stared into his glass. “She has the videos. From the warehouse. From the suite. She’ll use them.”
“To do what?”
“To keep playing.” He looked at her then, and his eyes were hollow. “It’s not about sex. Not really. It’s about ownership. She owns Anshul through debt and weakness. She owns me now through… complicity. Through footage of me fucking my best friend’s wife. She owns you through humiliation. She’ll want to see how far the threads can be pulled before we snap.”
Anupama swallowed more whiskey. The warmth was spreading, a false courage. “We could leave. The city. The country.”
“And go where?” A bitter smile touched his lips. “With what? My assets are tangled. Hers are everywhere. And she’d release it all. Your family, Anupama. Your conservative, proud parents in Hyderabad. They would see everything. The poker. The warehouse. Him taking you from behind while you licked her ass. Me, here, just now. She’d send it to them in a nice, encrypted file.”
A cold that had nothing to do with the air conditioning seeped into her bones. He was right. Escape was a child’s fantasy. The cage had no physical bars. It was made of reputation, of shame, of digital venom.
“So we wait for her next move.”
“We wait,” he confirmed, his voice grim.
They drank in silence. The night deepened outside. He led her back to the bedroom, not touching her. He lay on one side of the vast bed, she on the other. An ocean of white linen stretched between them. She stared at the ceiling, listening to his breath even out into something approximating sleep. Her own mind was a riotous, silent scream.
Sleep, when it came, was a black pit. She dreamed of Swati’s laugh, echoing in the sterile house. She dreamed of the gun, cold and heavy in her hand, but her finger couldn’t find the trigger.
A sound jerked her awake. It was still dark. A persistent, chiming buzz. Not a phone ring. Something else. Vishal bolted upright beside her, his body tense.
The source was a sleek, minimalist tablet on his nightstand, which she hadn’t noticed before. It was glowing. On the screen, a single, pulsing icon: a stylized, coiled serpent. His face paled in the dim light. He reached for it, his finger hovering for a second before he tapped the screen.
Swati’s face filled the display. She was back in the hotel suite, lounging in a silk robe, her hair perfect. A crystal glass of something clear rested in her hand. She looked refreshed, amused, utterly in control.
“Vishal, darling. Did I wake you?” Her voice was a smooth purr through the speaker.
“What do you want, Swati?”
“Such hostility. After our beautiful night together.” She took a sip. “I’ve been reviewing the footage. The earlier reels are… compelling. But the ending lacked a certain… punch. You just walked out. It felt unfinished.”
Anupama had gone very still, her blood turning to ice.
“It’s over,” Vishal said, but his voice lacked conviction.
“Nothing is over until I say it is,” Swati corrected gently. “And I say it isn’t. You left the game before the final hand was played. That’s bad etiquette.”
On the screen, Swati shifted. The robe fell open slightly, revealing the swell of a breast. The gesture was calculated, dismissive. “I’m bored. And when I’m bored, I get creative. Here’s what’s going to happen. You have her there with you, don’t you? I can sense it. Put me on the main screen. I want to see the room.”
Vishal hesitated. Swati’s smile didn’t waver. “Now, Vishal. Or the first edited highlight reel goes to the board of your Singapore venture. And to The Economic Times. ‘Prominent Investor’s Kink-Fueled Double Life.’ The headlines write themselves.”
A muscle ticked in Vishal’s jaw. He swore softly, then got out of bed. He picked up the tablet and walked to the living area. Anupama followed, wrapped in the blanket from the bed. He tapped several commands into a hidden panel on the wall. A large section of the blank white wall flickered, then lit up. Swati’s face was now life-sized, dominating the room. She looked around, her gaze a virtual scanner.
“Sterile as ever. Depressing. Now, listen closely. The game needs a conclusion. A final wager.”
“We have nothing left to wager,” Vishal said, standing before the screen like a man awaiting sentencing.
“You have your dignity. What’s left of it. And she has her pride. That silly, stubborn little fire she thinks she has.” Swati’s eyes shifted, finding Anupama in the dim light. “Hello, little wife. Did you enjoy your taste of a real man? Or did it just make you miss your worthless husband?”
Anupama said nothing. She met the digital gaze head-on.
“The wager is this,” Swati continued. “You will perform for me. One final act. Here. Now. And I will judge it. If it satisfies me, if it truly shows me your complete and utter surrender, I will give you the master files. All of them. The warehouse, the suite. Everything. You can burn them.”
“And if it doesn’t satisfy you?” Vishal asked, his voice hollow.
“Then I own you both, body and soul, for as long as I find you amusing. I will dictate your lives. Your meetings, your friendships, when you fuck, and how. I will be the director of your pathetic little tragedy. And I will start by sending Anshul the clip of you coming inside his beloved wife in his own bedroom. With commentary.”
The threat hung in the air, precise and vile. It was a no-win scenario, and they all knew it. Swati’s satisfaction was a moving target, a phantom.
“What act?” The question was torn from Vishal.
A slow, wicked smile spread across Swati’s face on the wall. “I want you to fuck her. But not like a lover. Not even like an angry man. I want you to fuck her like she’s nothing. A hole. A convenient, warm hole. I want to hear you say it. I want to see you use her with the same passion a man uses a piss-pot. And she…” Swati’s eyes glittered. “She will thank you for it. She will beg for it. She will call you her master. And she will look into my camera while you fill her with your cum. Raw. I want to see it drip out of her.”
Anupama’s stomach clenched. This was beyond humiliation. This was erasure.
“Do this,” Swati whispered, her face filling the screen. “Do this perfectly, and the chains are off. Refuse, or do it poorly, and the chains become your bones.”
Vishal stood frozen. Anupama could see the war inside him—the last shreds of decency screaming against the visceral need for freedom, for a way out.
“You have one minute to decide,” Swati said, settling back. She took a leisurely sip from her glass. The clock was ticking in the silence.
Vishal turned to look at Anupama. His eyes were shattered glass. “I…”
She understood then. There was no choice. Refusal meant total, lifelong slavery. Compliance meant a different kind of death, but perhaps a quicker one. And a chance, however slim, at the files. At a semblance of freedom.
Without a word, Anupama let the blanket fall from her shoulders. It pooled at her feet on the cold concrete floor. She walked to the center of the room, directly in front of the giant, watching screen. She looked at Vishal, her face a mask of impassive stone. She slowly pulled the grey t-shirt over her head. Then she hooked her thumbs into the waistband of the sweatpants and pushed them down, stepping out of them. She stood naked before Swati’s gaze, before Vishal’s tortured eyes.
“Hurry up,” Swati’s voice commanded, dripping with anticipatory pleasure.
Vishal’s resolve broke. A low, animal sound escaped him. He didn’t undress. He simply unzipped his sweatpants, freeing his cock, which was already half-hard with a sick mix of dread and perverted urgency. He walked toward Anupama. His face was a grimace.
“On your knees,” he said, the order sounding brittle.
Anupama knelt on the hard floor. The concrete was unforgiving against her skin. He stood before her, his cock level with her face. It thickened under her gaze.
“Suck it,” he muttered, not looking at her, but at Swati’s smiling face on the screen. “Make it wet. You’re just a mouth now.”
Anupama opened her mouth. She took him in. The taste was familiar, salty, skin. She moved her head, using her tongue, hollowing her cheeks. She was technically proficient, a skill learned from obligation, now used as a weapon of her own degradation. She heard his sharp intake of breath.
“Look at me while you do it, you cunt!” Swati shouted from the wall. “Let me see your eyes!”
Anupama tilted her head up, keeping Vishal in her mouth, and fixed her gaze on the camera lens at the top of the giant screen. Her eyes were dry, dark, and utterly vacant. She was gone. A machine was operating her body.
“Good. Very good,” Swati cooed. “Now tell him. Tell him what you are.”
Anupama pulled back, a string of saliva connecting her lips to his glistening tip. She spoke to the camera, her voice monotone. “I am a hole for your use, sir.”
Vishal flinched at the words. “Turn around,” he growled. “On your hands and knees.”
She obeyed, presenting herself to him, her back arched. The cool air brushed her skin. She stared at the floor, at the faint reflection of the screen’s light on the polished concrete.
“Tell her what you’re going to do,” Swati instructed Vishal.
Vishal positioned himself behind Anupama. He placed a hand on the small of her back, pressing down. His touch was cold. “I’m going to fuck this useless cunt,” he said, the filth sounding alien in his mouth. “Because it’s what she’s for.”
“Yes,” Swati breathed. “Now do it. Hard. Don’t pretend she’s a person.”
Vishal guided himself to her entrance. He was fully hard now, a blunt, angry instrument. He pushed in without any attempt at gentleness. Anupama gasped as he stretched her, filled her, a brutal, dry invasion that burned. He drew back and slammed into her, setting a punishing, mechanical rhythm from the first stroke.
The sound was obscene in the quiet room: the slap of his hips against her flesh, his grunts of effort, the soft, helpless sounds forced from her throat with each deep drive. He fucked her like he was trying to purge something, his hands gripping her hips so tightly she knew new bruises would blossom.
“Say it!” Swati demanded, her voice rising. “Make her say it!”
Vishal leaned over Anupama’s back, his breath hot on her neck. “Who do you belong to?” he panted, pounding into her.
“You,” she gasped, the word punched out of her.
“Who am I?”
“My master.” The title was ash in her mouth.
“Why am I fucking this dirty pussy?”
“Because… because it’s empty. And you need to come.” The logic of the script was insane, degrading. She was dissociating, watching from a corner of the ceiling as her body was rocked, as her voice spoke these alien lines.
“Louder!” Swati screamed, thrilled. “I want to hear her beg for it!”
Vishal’s pace became frantic, brutal. He was chasing his own climax, a release from this nightmare. “Beg for my cum, you whore! Beg for me to fill this cheap slit!”
Anupama squeezed her eyes shut. “Please,” she moaned, the plea not entirely feigned—a plea for it to end. “Please, master. Come in me. Fill my hole. I need it. I’m just a hole.”
Her words, the sheer abasement of them, tipped him over the edge. With a strangled roar that was more anguish than ecstasy, he hammered into her one final time and held himself deep. She felt the hot, sudden pulse of his release flooding inside her. He shuddered violently, his whole body going rigid against her back.
For a moment, there was only the sound of their ragged breathing. Vishal remained lodged within her, spent.
The silence from the screen was expectant.
Slowly, he pulled out. A trickle of his semen followed, a warm rivulet down her inner thigh. He staggered back, pulling up his sweatpants, his face a mask of shame and revulsion. He couldn’t look at her.
Anupama stayed on her hands and knees, head hanging, feeling the slow leak of him. She was empty in every way possible.
“Well,” Swati’s voice finally came, thoughtful, assessing. “The performance was… adequate. The begging was a nice touch. Authentically pathetic.”
Vishal looked up at the screen, a flicker of desperate hope in his eyes. “The files. You’ll send them?”
Swati smiled. It was a slow, widening curve of pure malice. “Oh, Vishal. You pathetic fool. Did you really think it was about the performance?” She laughed, a light, tinkling sound that was more terrifying than any shout. “The game was never about you satisfying me. It was about you proving you would do anything. And you just did. You proved you are my creature, completely.”
The hope died in his eyes, replaced by a horrifying comprehension.
“So, no,” Swati said, her tone final. “You don’t get the files. You get a new command. Clean her up. Put her to bed. You have a board meeting at ten. I expect you to be sharp. I’ll be in touch soon with your next… assignment.”
The screen went black.
The room plunged into a silence so absolute it felt physical. The only proof Swati had been there was the lingering image burned onto their retinas and the wetness cooling between Anupama’s legs.
Vishal sank to his knees on the floor, his head in his hands. A dry, heaving sob wracked his frame. He had sold the last of himself for nothing.
Anupama slowly, painfully, got to her feet. She didn’t look at him. She walked past his crumpled form, back to the bathroom. She turned on the tap and scooped cold water, washing between her legs with mechanical efficiency. The water was clear. The damage was not.
She returned to the bedroom, put on the clothes, and got into the bed. She lay on her side, facing the wall. After a long time, she heard him shuffle in. He lay down on the far side again. The distance between them was now infinite.
Just as the first grey light of dawn touched the window, his phone buzzed on the nightstand. A single, incoming message. He picked it up with a trembling hand.
Anupama didn’t need to see it to know. It was from Swati. The game was eternal. The next move was hers.
SWATI DOMINATES NEXT.
