Chapter 3: The Kurta Falls
The cards on the table were just smears of color now. A king of hearts, a seven of clubs, a deuce of diamonds. Meaningless. Anshul stared at them, then at his own hidden cards, as if he could change the symbols printed on them through sheer, drunken will. His face collapsed in slow motion—the hope draining first from his eyes, then the color from his cheeks, finally the very structure from his posture. He didn’t slam his fist or cry out. He just seemed to deflate, sinking lower into the chair until his forehead touched the green felt with a soft, final thud.
A low snore rattled in his throat.
The record player in the corner hissed, the needle caught in the end groove. Tick-tick-tick-tick.
The silence it left was absolute and enormous.
I was still pressed against the doorjamb, the rough wood grain biting into my shoulder. My breath felt trapped in my chest, a solid, painful thing. I watched Vishal. He didn’t move to check on Anshul. He didn’t exult. He simply placed his own cards face down on the table, a neat, deliberate gesture. Then he pushed his chair back. The legs scraped against the cement floor, a sound that made me flinch.
He stood. His movements were not rushed, but they had a terrifying inevitability to them, like a tide coming in. He walked around the table, past Anshul’s slumped form, and came towards me. The dim light from the sagging chandelier carved shadows under his cheekbones, deepened the darkness of his eyes until they were just pools of obsidian, fixed on me.
He stopped a foot away. I could smell the whiskey on him, mixed with the clean, sharp scent of his sweat. I could see the pulse beating in his throat. He didn’t speak. His gaze traveled over my face, down the column of my throat, over the plain white cotton of the borrowed kurta that hung on me like a sack.
He reached out. Not for my face, or my hair. His fingers found the hem of the kurta where it brushed my thighs. The touch was electric, a brand through the fabric. He took a fistful of the coarse cotton in each hand, his knuckles grazing my skin. My whole body went rigid, a wire pulled taut.
Then, in one slow, continuous motion, he pulled the kurta up and over my head.
It caught for a second on my elbows, then he freed it and let it fall. It whispered to the floor, joining the forgotten petticoat and blouse in a heap of discarded fabric. The night air in the room was stale and warm, but it felt like a polar wind on my bare skin. I was naked. Utterly, completely exposed in the ghastly yellow light of this crumbling room, with my husband snoring drunkenly ten feet away.
Goosebumps erupted across my arms, my stomach, my legs. My nipples tightened into hard, sensitive peaks against the cool air. I didn’t cover myself. I couldn’t move. I was a statue of my own making.
Vishal’s eyes didn’t leave mine. He was studying my reaction, the fear and the defiance and the raw, shocking need that was coursing through me like a drug. He saw it all. His expression was unreadable, a mask of intense concentration.
Finally, he broke his silence. His voice was low, a gravelly murmur that seemed to vibrate in the space between us. “Look at you.”
His hands came up, not to grab, but to hover just above my skin, as if sensing the heat radiating from me. Then his palms settled on my waist. They were warm, rough. They spanned almost the entire width of me, his thumbs meeting just above my navel. The touch was shockingly possessive, a claim staked on unmarked territory.
A tremor ran through me. He felt it. His thumbs began to move, tracing slow, concentric circles on my skin. The calluses on his palms were a delicious, abrasive contrast to the softness of my belly. He was mapping me.
He leaned in, his mouth close to my ear. “You’re trembling.”
“I’m not afraid of you,” I breathed, and was surprised to find it was mostly true.
“I know,” he said, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. “You’re afraid of this.” His hands slid up, over my ribs, leaving trails of fire. They cupped the undersides of my breasts, lifting their weight, holding them as if weighing something precious. “Of how much you want it.”
My head fell back. A helpless sound, half-gasp, half-moan, escaped my throat. I was laid bare in more ways than one. He had seen the calculation in my eyes, the silent nod that sealed my fate, and now he was seeing the animal response my body had been screaming for years. He owned it all.
His thumbs swept over my nipples, once, twice, a light, maddening friction. They hardened further, aching for more. He made a satisfied, deep sound in his chest.
“You’re more beautiful than any prize,” he murmured, not as poetry, but as a simple, devastating fact.
Then he bent his head.
His mouth was hot and wet as it closed over my left breast. Not tentative, not gentle. It was a taking. His tongue swirled around the peak, laving it, before he drew the whole of it deep into the heat of his mouth. The sensation was so sharp, so direct, it was almost painful. A jolt of pure electricity shot straight to my core. I cried out, my hands flying up to clutch at his head, my fingers tangling in his thick, dark hair. I arched into him, pushing myself deeper into that amazing, consuming warmth.
He suckled strongly, his tongue flicking, his teeth grazing with just enough pressure to make my knees weak. The world narrowed to that point of contact—the pull of his mouth, the scrape of his stubble on the tender skin of my breast, the twin points of pleasure and shame intertwining until they were inseparable. The wet sound of his mouth on my skin was obscenely loud in the quiet room, underscored by Anshul’s ragged snores.
He switched to the other breast, giving it the same relentless, focused attention. His hands moved to my back, pressing me into him, aligning my body with the hard, rigid line of his erection straining against his trousers. The feel of it, so undeniably potent, sent a fresh wave of liquid heat between my legs. I was panting now, little whimpering breaths I couldn’t control.
He lifted his head finally, his lips glistening. My breasts felt swollen, oversensitive, marked. He looked at his work, then back at my face. My eyes were wide, my lips parted. I was utterly undone, and he’d barely touched me.
“See?” he said, his voice thick. “No furniture. No vase. Just this.” He ran a hand down my side, over the curve of my hip, squeezing. “A woman. All fire and need.”
He kissed me then, a deep, claiming kiss that tasted of whiskey and me. I kissed him back with a desperation that shocked me, my tongue tangling with his, my body plastered against the length of his. This was nothing like the cautious, perfunctory kisses Anshul had bestowed in the early days. This was a devouring. This was hunger meeting hunger.
When he broke the kiss, we were both breathless. He looked over my shoulder, towards the table. “We can’t stay here.”
The practical statement was a bucket of cold reality. I followed his gaze. Anshul was still out, a puddle of ruined potential. But he could wake up. Any minute. The thought should have horrified me. Instead, it added a dangerous, illicit thrill to the ache in my body.
“My room,” I said, the words scraped raw.
He nodded, once. Keeping one arm firmly around me, he bent and scooped up the discarded kurta from the floor. He didn’t hand it to me. He simply held it. An unspoken question.
I shook my head. I wouldn’t hide again. Not now. Naked, I turned and led him out of the living room, down the dark hallway, past the closed door of the guest room where our negotiation had begun. The floor was cool under my bare feet. I felt his eyes on my back, on the sway of my hips, on the vulnerable backs of my knees. I felt more powerful in that naked walk than I ever had draped in six yards of Banarasi silk.
My bedroom was at the end of the hall. It was the one space I had tried to keep as a sanctuary, though the neglect of the house seeped in at the edges—a patch of damp on the ceiling, the faint smell of mildew behind the lavender air freshener. I pushed the door open. A simple bed with a faded blue cover. A dressing table cluttered with my few cosmetics. A window looking out into the blackness of the overgrown garden.
I stepped inside. He followed, closing the door behind him. The click was softer here, more final. This was my space. My defeat and my surrender would happen on my own territory.
He didn’t immediately reach for me. He stood just inside the door, taking in the room, the pathetic details of my imprisoned life. His eyes lingered on the single photo on the dressing table—my parents and I, from before my marriage. His jaw tightened. Then his gaze returned to me, standing beside the bed.
“This is where you sleep,” he stated. “Alone.”
It wasn’t a question. I didn’t answer. The truth was too heavy.
He approached slowly, like one might approach a skittish animal. He stopped in front of me, and his hands came up to frame my face. His touch was different now—softer, more deliberate. “Anupama,” he said, my name a sacred word in his mouth. “Tell me to stop, and I walk out that door. The paper is signed. You’re free either way.”
Tears, hot and sudden, blurred my vision. It was the choice, offered so starkly, that undid me. For three years, I’d had no choices. Now I had this impossible one: safety, or this man who had seen me at my most degraded and called it fire.
I leaned forward and pressed my lips to his, answering him without words. It was a clumsy, tear-salted kiss. He accepted it, then deepened it, his hands sliding from my face down my neck, over my shoulders, down my back, pulling me into him.
This time, the undressing was mutual. My fingers fumbled with the buttons of his shirt, driven by a frantic need to feel his skin. He shrugged it off, letting it fall. His chest was broad, lightly dusted with dark hair, the skin taut over firm muscle. I splayed my hands over it, feeling the heat, the solid reality of him. He was all hard planes and coiled strength, a stark contrast to my own softness.
He unbuckled his belt, the sound of the leather sliding through the loops loud in the quiet. He kicked off his trousers, his shorts following. And then he was just there, naked with me in the dim light from the hallway bleeding under the door.
I let myself look. He was fully, impressively erect. A part of my brain, the part still clinging to modesty, flinched. But a larger, hungrier part just acknowledged it with a sharp, answering ache low in my belly.
He guided me backwards until my legs hit the edge of the bed. “Lie down,” he whispered against my mouth.
I let myself fall back onto the cool cotton of the bedsheet. He followed me down, covering my body with his, not crushing me, but surrounding me. The weight of him was incredible, an anchor in the storm of sensation. His skin was hot everywhere it touched mine—chest to breasts, stomach to stomach, his hard length pressing against my thigh.
He kissed me again, deeply, his hands roaming everywhere—my breasts, my waist, the flare of my hips, the outsides of my thighs. He kissed the tears from my cheeks, the line of my jaw, the frantic pulse at the base of my throat. He moved down my body, his mouth leaving a trail of fire. He took his time, as if he had all night, as if Anshul wasn’t a drunken time bomb in the next room.
When his mouth reached my navel, his tongue dipping inside, I writhed. When he moved lower, his hands spreading my thighs, I tensed.
“Shhh,” he breathed, the warmth of it against my most sensitive skin making me gasp. “This is mine now too. Let me have it.”
His tongue found me, and my back arched clear off the bed. A sharp, ragged cry tore from my throat. I slapped a hand over my own mouth, biting down on my knuckles. The sounds he was pulling from me were foreign, feral.
He didn’t relent. He explored me with a focused, ruthless curiosity, learning what made me jerk, what made me moan into my own hand, what made my hips rise off the mattress in a silent plea. He was a man studying a complex, fascinating text, and he was determined to understand every syllable. The pleasure was so intense it bordered on agony, a coil tightening and tightening deep inside me with every stroke of his tongue, every gentle scrape of his teeth.
“Don’t hold back,” he grunted, his voice muffled against me. “Let me hear you.”
I shook my head frantically, my eyes wide open, staring at the water-stained ceiling. I couldn’t. The house, the man in the other room… it was too much.
He stopped. The absence was a physical pain. He rose up on his elbows, looking down at me. His mouth was wet, his eyes blazing. “He lost,” he said, his voice cold and clear. “He doesn’t get to hear this. This is for us. Scream if you want to.”
Then his mouth was on me again, and his fingers joined, and the coil snapped.
The climax hit me like a seismic shock. It tore through the dam of my silence. A broken, sobbing cry ripped from my throat, unabated, echoing in the small room. My body convulsed, my hips bucking against his mouth uncontrollably as wave after wave of pure, blinding sensation crashed through me. I saw stars behind my eyelids, my fists clutching at the sheets, my toes curling into the mattress. It was annihilation. It was rebirth.
When I finally came back to myself, shuddering and spent, he was kissing his way back up my body. His skin tasted of me. He settled between my legs, his weight propped on his elbows, his face inches from mine. My tears were flowing freely now, hot and silent.
“Look at me,” he commanded softly.
I did. His eyes were dark, pupils blown wide, but they held an unnerving clarity.
“That,” he said, “was just the beginning.”
He shifted his hips. I felt the blunt, insistent pressure of him at my entrance. I was wet, more than ready, but there was still a flicker of primal fear. It had been so long. And never like this.
He saw it. He stilled. “Tell me,” he said. A command, but with a thread of something else—a check-in, a remaining shred of that negotiation.
I wrapped my legs around his hips, drawing him closer. My voice was a wrecked whisper. “Don’t be gentle.”
A ghost of a smile touched his lips. Then he pushed inside.
There was a moment of sharp, stretching fullness, a brief burn of reacquaintance. I cried out again, this time a short, punched-out sound. He sank deeper, slowly, until he was fully sheathed, our bodies joined in the most elemental way possible. He was big, and the feeling of being so completely filled was overwhelming. I gasped for air, my nails digging into the hard muscles of his back.
He didn’t move for a long moment, letting me adjust, his forehead pressed to mine, his breath coming in ragged gusts. “God, you feel…,” he whispered, the sentence dying in a groan.
Then he began to move.
It wasn’t gentle. It was deep, powerful, relentless strokes that drove the breath from my lungs. Each thrust pushed me up the bed, my shoulders scraping against the headboard. He hooked his hands under my knees, pushing them back, opening me wider, changing the angle. The new position made him go even deeper, hitting a place inside me that made my vision blur.
The earlier sensitivity from his mouth was still a live wire, and every drive of his hips sent fresh shocks of pleasure radiating outward. I met him thrust for thrust, my hips rising to meet his, our skin slapping together in a rhythm that was quickly becoming frantic, desperate. He was right. The first climax had just been a warm-up. A new, deeper tension was coiling, tighter and more urgent than before.
He was watching my face, his own a mask of fierce concentration, sweat beading on his temples and tracing a path down the column of his throat. “Whose?” he grunted, the word forced out between thrusts.
I didn’t understand, my mind a haze of sensation.
“Whose are you?” he demanded, his pace not faltering.
The answer rose from somewhere deep, from a place of three years of loneliness and tonight’s terrifying liberation. “Yours,” I moaned, the word a surrender and a victory all at once. “Right now… I’m yours.”
A savage growl ripped from his throat. He drove into me harder, deeper, his control splintering. “Say it again.”
“Yours!” I cried out, the word breaking into a scream as the second climax detonated. This one was deeper, slower, a rolling earthquake that shattered me from the inside out. My internal muscles clenched around him, milking him, pulling him deeper into the vortex with me.
With a final, hoarse shout, he followed. I felt him pulse inside me, a hot, claiming rush that seemed to go on and on as his body shuddered above mine. He collapsed onto me, his full weight a welcome, grounding pressure, his face buried in the sweaty crook of my neck.
The only sounds were our ragged breathing and the frantic beating of our hearts, slowly slowing to a syncopated drumbeat. The room smelled of sex and sweat and the lingering lavender from my air freshener, a bizarre, intimate perfume.
He rolled off me after a minute, but immediately pulled me into his side, my head on his shoulder, his arm a heavy band across my stomach. We lay there in the dark, sticky and spent, the reality of what we’d just done settling over us like dust.
In the living room, the record player was silent. But from down the hall, we heard a new sound.
A cough. A groan. The creak of a chair.
Anshul was waking up.
