Chapter 1: Exposition
The afternoon sun was streaming in through the window facing the balcony, creating pools of sunshine on the carpet on the floor. Yumi sighed as she watched her beloved cat, Mocha, purring in the sunshine. The warm rays illuminated Mocha's ebony coat, highlighting the smooth and elegant contours of her Scottish Fold breed.
Yumi's apartment was nestled on the sixth floor of a drab concrete building. The space was adorned with traditional Japanese minimalism, from the paper-thin walls to the tatami floors. The soothing scents of incense and green tea permeated the air, and a soft, muted light filtered in from the single window overlooking the city.
Yumi ran her fingers gently through Mocha's silky fur as the cat stretched out lazily, luxuriating in the attention.
Yumi's mind wandered back to her studies and her part-time job at the pet shop. Lately, things had been hectic, and she had been working long hours to keep up with the demand. Her university work was starting to pile up, and she was feeling the strain. But in moments like these, with Mocha's soft purrs and gentle headbutts, she could forget about the stress of it all.
Yumi's thoughts drifted back to the day she found Mocha, abandoned and alone in the park.
She was taking her usual walk, enjoying the quiet and peace that only a weekday park can offer. However, as she approached the gazebo, she heard a faint cry from inside the building. As she walked closer, she noticed a small cardboard box in the corner of the gazebo, and a black cat was looking up at her from inside. The cat looked to be an adult, about four years old.
Yumi knew she couldn't just leave him there, so she picked him up and took him home. She named him Mocha, after her favorite strong black coffee, and got him a warm bed in her apartment.
Mocha had been a little skittish at first, but Yumi's gentle touch and loving care had soon won him over.
He had quickly settled into his new home, finding comfort in the warm embrace of Yumi's arms.
Yumi had spent countless hours doting on Mocha, feeding him, playing with him, and simply enjoying his company. But as Mocha's appetite grew, so did her concerns about his weight.
One day, Yumi decided to take Mocha to the veterinarian for a check-up. The vet examined Mocha thoroughly, weighing him and checking his overall health. Yumi held her breath as the vet looked at Mocha, wondering if she would have to put him on a diet.
However, the vet reassured her, saying, "Mocha is a large cat, a size larger than an average cat. He's at an ideal weight right now, so there's nothing to worry about."
Yumi sighed in relief, happy that Mocha was healthy and thriving.
Yumi picked up Mocha and placed her on her lap. Mocha purred happily. As Yumi stroked Mocha's soft fur, her eyelids grew heavy and she fell asleep.
In her dreams, Yumi was wandering through a lush forest, the trees towering above her and casting dappled shadows on the ground. She walked for what felt like hours, searching for something, but she didn't know what.
Suddenly, she heard a voice, soft and musical, calling her name. Yumi opened her eyes, but instead of the forest, she was still in her apartment, with Mocha purring contentedly in her lap.
But as she looked at her cat, she realized that something was different.
Mocha was definitely speaking to Yumi in human language.
"Thank you, Yumi," Mocha said, looking up at Yumi with his bright green eyes. "I can't believe you took me in when I was abandoned. I'm so grateful."
Yumi was taken aback. She blinked, thinking she was hallucinating. But no, Mocha was still there, looking at her with those same bright green eyes, only this time, he looked more human-like than ever before.
"Mocha, what's going on? Are you okay?" Yumi asked, feeling a little worried.
"It's okay, Yumi. I just wanted to say thank you for all the love you've given me."
Yumi was still in shock. "Mocha, what do you mean you can talk?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
"It's a long story," Mocha replied. "But let me start by telling you about Hasegawa Tomoko. She was an old woman who took me in when I was just a kitten. She was kind and gentle, and I loved her very much."
"But why did she abandon you?" Yumi asked, her heart aching at the thought of the sweet old lady giving up her beloved pet.
"It wasn't because of ego or a lack of love," Mocha explained. "She was old and sick and didn't have much time left to live. But there was no one around her who could take me in. She had the ability to see into the future, and she knew I would soon find a new owner, so she abandoned me."
