Why writers move across
Five reasons, the side-by-side table, both price lists, and the one thing AI Dungeon does that we do not.
DreamPress writes chapters. AI Dungeon writes turns. Everything else follows from that. Your story bible and your memory are the same on the free plan as on Pro, instead of being sold to you a tier at a time. Pictures cost 3 credits on every plan. Narration comes with the chapter. And the entry price is $9.99 a month, where AI Dungeon's cheapest paid tier is $14.99. Over 800,000 writers have signed up, the app is rated 4.6 on the App Store, and a new account gets 15 credits every day without a card. DreamPress is ours. Start a story free.
Five reasons writers move across
Writers move from AI Dungeon to DreamPress for five reasons: price, a free tier that comes back every day, memory that is never metered, chapters instead of turns, and pictures and narration in the same project. Every claim here is checkable. AI Dungeon's figures were read on their own help centre on 22 September 2026; ours are on our pricing page.
1. Your memory does not depend on your plan. AI Dungeon publishes Memory Bank size per tier: 25 Memories on the free tier, 800 on the most expensive one. Context is published the same way: 4k on the free tier, 32k at the top. On DreamPress there is one answer for everybody. The same story bible, the same running memory, the same story envelope on the free plan and on Pro. Continuity is not an upgrade here; it is the product.
2. You get chapters, not a transcript. A premise goes in and a project comes out: a title, a cover, characters, and chapters you can edit, reorder and publish. Nothing is a turn, nothing is a log, and nothing has to be tidied up before you show it to anyone. Write chapter one now.
3. Pictures cost 3 credits, on every plan, Pro included. Covers, character portraits and scene images, priced the same for a free account and a paying one. There is no image tier and no separate image currency to run out of halfway through a chapter.
4. Every chapter comes with a voice. Narration is produced with the generation rather than bought as an add-on. You write a chapter, and you can listen to it.
5. It is free most days, properly. 15 credits every day after you verify an email address, 50 credits for the verification itself, and 20 a day once a writing streak reaches seven days. A chapter costs 1 to 3 credits. Most people writing an evening at a time never reach the bottom of that. Take the free credits.
AI Dungeon and DreamPress, side by side
DreamPress costs $9.99 a month against AI Dungeon's $14.99, gives 15 free credits every day where AI Dungeon's free tier gives none, and never charges a credit for memory. Every AI Dungeon figure below was read on their own help centre and checked on 22 September 2026.
| AI Dungeon | DreamPress | |
|---|---|---|
| What you end up with | A transcript of turns | Chapters you can edit, with a cover, pictures and a voice track |
| Memory | Sized by plan: 25 Memories on the free tier, 800 on the top one | The same story bible and running memory on every plan, free included |
| What the free tier gets you | Free to play, with 0 Credits and a 4k context | 15 credits every day, no card, and the same story envelope as Pro |
| Pictures | Through See mode, and "usually requires spending Credits" | 3 credits, on every plan, Pro included |
| How it reads when you send it to a friend | "You enter the throne room to tell the king of your discovery." | Prose, in the person and tense you chose |
| What upgrading buys you | More Credits, a bigger Memory Bank and more context | Images and premium chapters — the writing itself is already included |
| Cheapest paid plan | $14.99 a month, Journey | $9.99 a month, Pro, or $71.99 a year |
| Best if you want… | A game night | A book with your name on it |

Price: $9.99 against $14.99
AI Dungeon publishes five tiers: Wanderer, which is free, then Journey at $14.99 a month, Legend at $29.99, Mythic at $49.99 and Ultimate at $99.99. What you buy as you climb is monthly Credits, Memory Bank size and context. Their page says subscriptions can be bought for twelve, six or one month with discounts available, and publishes no yearly figure.
DreamPress has one paid plan. Pro is $9.99 a month or $71.99 a year, and it includes unlimited basic writing within fair use plus 1,000 credits a month for images and premium-model chapters. Below it, the free plan is a real plan: 15 credits a day, a 50-credit bonus for verifying an email address, and 20 a day from the seventh day of a streak. Credit packs run from $4.99 for 400 credits to $99.99 for 12,000, they never expire, and the first pack an account buys is doubled.
So the entry price is $9.99 against $14.99, the free tier is 15 credits a day against 0 Credits, and the thing you would most want more of — memory — is not for sale at either price here, because everyone already has it. Web prices; App Store prices differ. See the full price list.
Which one fits the way you write
Writing something long, a chapter at a time. DreamPress. A story bible plus a running memory is a different mechanism from a turn history, and it is the thing the product is built around. A name you wrote down in chapter two is still there in chapter forty.
Writing your first novel and you want to finish it. DreamPress. Chapters, word targets, a cover, and ten free writing tools for the planning, with no sign-up needed to use them.
You want pictures in the story, not beside it. DreamPress. 3 credits an image on any plan, dropped into the chapter they belong to.
You want to talk to a character rather than write about one. DreamPress, in chat. Same characters, same memory, a different shape of session.
Adult content. DreamPress is 18 and over, one age, on every surface, and adult content is allowed on the web app for verified adults. Sexual content involving anyone under 18 is never permitted in any context, and real named people are not permitted in published sexual content. AI Dungeon's own pages give two different minimum ages: their Terms of Service says 13, with some features restricted to the age of majority, and their Privacy Policy says 18.
You want a game night with four friends and somebody else's scenario. That is AI Dungeon, and it is a different product rather than a better one. It has multiplayer with a join code and a large library of community Scenarios; DreamPress has neither and is not trying to. If what you want is a session, play. If what you want is a book, start it here.
AI Dungeon alternative FAQ
Is there anything better than AI Dungeon?
For writing a story, yes. DreamPress produces chapters rather than turns, keeps a story bible and a running memory on every plan including the free one, puts images and narration inside the project, and costs $9.99 a month against $14.99. Over 800,000 writers have signed up and the app is rated 4.6 on the App Store. For turn-based multiplayer play with community scenarios, AI Dungeon is doing something DreamPress does not do at all.
What are some free alternatives to AI Dungeon?
DreamPress is the one worth starting with. Verify an email address and you get 15 credits every single day, plus 50 credits for verifying, plus 20 a day once a streak reaches seven days. A chapter costs 1 to 3 credits, so that is several chapters a day, every day, with no card and no trial clock. The ten writing tools on the site need no account at all.
Is AI Dungeon outdated?
Their help centre was documenting current tiers, models and features when we checked it on 22 September 2026, so no. The real question is a different one: whether a turn loop that rewrites your sentences into second person is the shape you want, when what you are actually trying to make is a book.
Can I import my AI Dungeon stories?
There is no importer, but there is a path. AI Dungeon documents a Download Adventure option that gives you a zip of your text. Paste that text in as the premise of a new DreamPress story and carry on from there in chapters, with the facts of the world written into the story bible so they stop drifting.
Does DreamPress have a second-person adventure mode?
Not a mode, and not a turn loop. You can ask for second person and get it, and Choices mode offers two continuations at each beat so a story can branch. What you will not find is the automatic rewrite of "I went" into "You went", because the output here is meant to read as prose.
Is DreamPress free?
Yes, every day, without a card. A verified account gets 15 credits a day and a chapter costs 1 to 3 of them. Pro at $9.99 a month removes the credit cost of basic writing altogether and adds 1,000 credits a month for images and premium chapters. Nothing expires on you and nothing asks for card details to begin.
Does DreamPress allow adult content?
Yes, for verified adults on the web app, and the age rule is a single number: 18, everywhere, with no exceptions and no second answer in a different policy. Sexual content involving anyone under 18 is never permitted in any context, and published work may not contain sexual content involving real, named people.
