Chapter 2: The Rose Suite's Confession
The fire crackled and settled, casting long shadows across the carved ceiling. Joe lay on his side, the chain from his collar taut to the bedpost, his body angled toward Alessandra. She mirrored his position on the opposite side of the vast bed, her brown hair pooling on the silk pillow. The distance between them was a gulf of velvet and brocade, yet her eyes held his with a steadiness that made the room shrink.
"I was in the market square," she said, her voice low and raw. "When they came. I was fifteen. My mother sent me for bread, and I never went back." She swallowed. "I watched the towers fall from a cart, surrounded by Qohovis soldiers. I didn't even get to scream."
Joe's chest tightened. "I was in the fields. The earth shook and the sky turned black. I ran toward the city, but the fire wall stopped me. I saw my father's silhouette against the flames before the smoke took everything."
A long silence stretched between them, filled only by the hiss of the hearth.
Alessandra shifted, her chain clinking. She extended her arm as far as the shackle allowed, her fingers reaching across the empty space. Joe stretched his own arm out, his chain pulling taut. Their fingertips brushed, and a faint, blue-white spark leaped between them. Both collars flared with sudden runic light, then dimmed.
They pulled back, startled. Joe stared at his hand, then at Alessandra. Her eyes were wide, reflecting the fire.
"What was that?" she whispered.
"I don't know." But something deep in his chest hummed, a vibration that felt like recognition.
The fire popped. Alessandra's hand remained outstretched, trembling. Joe reached again, slower this time, and their fingers interlaced. No spark this time, only the warmth of her skin against his. She let out a shaky breath.
Without another word, she crawled across the bed, dragging her chain until she lay beside him, her body pressed against his side. Her head found the hollow of his shoulder, and her arm draped across his chest. Joe wrapped his arm around her, feeling the rapid beat of her heart through her ribs.
They lay there, two broken survivors wrapped in each other's heat, as the fire burned low. Her breathing slowed first, then his, and they slept tangled together beneath the weight of a world that had tried to erase them.
Dawn bled through the velvet curtains in pale streaks. Joe woke to the sound of a key turning in the lock, and before he could untangle himself from Alessandra, three chambermaids entered with brisk efficiency. They parted the sleeping slaves with clinical hands, pulling Alessandra from his arms.
"Please," she breathed, reaching for him. A maid slapped her hand down.
"Her Majesty wants her presentable," one of the women said, not unkindly. "You'll see him soon enough."
They bathed Alessandra in a copper tub, scrubbing her skin with rose-scented soap. They brushed her brown hair until it gleamed like polished mahogany, then left it loose around her shoulders. When they led her back into the throne room, Joe was already there, kneeling naked beside the Queen's gilded chair, his chain bolted to the dais.
Alessandra was forced to her knees on Joe's left. Charlene sat above them, one hand idly stroking Joe's hair, the other tracing slow circles on Alessandra's shoulder blade. Joe remained still, his gaze fixed on the floor. He had learned long ago that resistance only invited crueler games.
But Alessandra flinched. Her whole body recoiled when Charlene's fingers trailed down her spine, and she pressed closer to Joe as if he could shield her. Charlene chuckled, a low, velvety sound.
"Shy, little bird. You'll learn."
For hours, Alessandra knelt there as nobles and petitioners filed past, their eyes flickering over her naked form with casual dismissal. She was furniture. A living ornament. Joe's presence beside her was the only anchor.
When the last courtier departed, Charlene rose. She produced a short chain with a clasp at each end and clicked them onto their collars, linking Joe and Alessandra together by a foot of iron.
Charlene gave the chain a gentle tug, drawing them both to their feet. "Back to the Rose Suite," she said, her voice silk over steel. "I want you well rested. Tomorrow, the court will see what my Motreysian pets can do for entertainment. Consider tonight your rehearsal."
She released the chain and gestured to a guard, who escorted them through the winding corridors. Alessandra walked close to Joe, her bare shoulder brushing his arm with every step. Her breath came in shallow, rapid bursts.
When the door closed behind them, the lock clicking with finality, Alessandra turned to him. Her brown eyes were wide, rimmed with moisture. "Joe. I can't. Not in front of all those people. I can't."
He reached for her hand, his fingers lacing through hers. "I won't hurt you. I swear it. Whatever happens, I won't let them make me hurt you."
She stared at their joined hands, then at the iron chain linking their collars. A tear slipped down her cheek. Joe lifted his free hand, and she mirrored him, both palms hovering over the chain. The metal felt cold, heavy, oppressive.
Their fingers met in midair above the links. A tremor ran through Joe's arm as a warmth bloomed in his chest. Alessandra gasped, her eyes fixed on the chain. A blue white glow spread from where their hands hovered, seeping into the iron. The metal groaned, then split with a sharp crack, the broken links clattering to the floor.
They stared at the freed ends of their collars, then at each other.
"Did we do that?" Alessandra whispered.
"I think we did." Joe's heart hammered. He looked at the door. "We have to go. Tonight."
They pressed their hands to the lock. Another pulse of that strange warmth, and the mechanism clicked open. They slipped into the dark corridor, feet silent on cold stone.
Joe led her down a narrow stairwell, through a kitchen, into a dank passage reeking of refuse. Torches guttered along the walls. At the end, a heavy grate overlooked a chute that emptied into the lake below.
"Servants dump waste here," he muttered. "Follow me."
He climbed onto the ledge, found a rusted key hanging on a peg beside the chute, and tucked it into his palm. Then he dropped into the darkness, Alessandra following, into the icy water below.
They surfaced, gasping, and clawed their way onto the muddy bank. Naked, collared, and shivering, they ran into the treeline. Joe's teeth chattered as he pointed east.
"Charlene has a summer home in the hills past these woods. She'll search Rivendell first. We hide there." He gripped Alessandra's hand, pulling her deeper into the shadows. "We just need to survive tonight."
The forest swallowed them, the palace lights flickering cold and distant behind them.
