Chapter 4: The Summer House Refuge
The door groaned shut behind them, sealing the passageway’s damp stone smell in their lungs. Joe stood still for a moment, letting his eyes adjust to the deeper dark of the parlor. Dust sheets loomed like pale ghosts over furniture he remembered from summers spent scrubbing floors and fetching wine. The wind hurled rain against the windows, rattling the leaded glass in its frames.
Alessandra shivered beside him, her breath quick and shallow. He could feel the cold radiating off her skin.
“Wait here,” he whispered, though the storm swallowed his voice. He padded across the threadbare carpet, navigating by memory, until his fingers found the linen cupboard door. It opened with a soft whine. Inside, the scent of lavender and mothballs clung to folded sheets. He pulled free two coarse wool blankets, rough against his palms, and carried them back.
She took hers without a word, wrapping it tight around her shoulders. The fabric dwarfed her, trailing on the floor. Joe draped his own blanket over himself, the wool scratching his skin but holding a faint, borrowed warmth.
“The hearth,” he said, nodding toward the far wall. “There’s wood, if the damp hasn’t ruined it.”
They moved together, footsteps muffled by dust. Joe knelt before the cold fireplace, its iron grate empty. He found a kindling box beneath a stack of old newspapers, and a flint and steel tied with twine. His fingers were stiff, but he worked the steel against the stone until a spark caught the dried shavings. A tiny flame wavered, then grew, licking at the split logs he added one by one.
The firelight painted the room in amber and shadow. Alessandra lowered herself beside him, the blanket pooling around her hips. Her collar caught the glow, the runes dark and dormant.
For a long moment neither spoke. The storm raged beyond the walls, but here, in the small circle of heat, the world felt narrower. Joe watched the flames writhe and crackle, feeling the warmth seep into his bones.
“We made it,” Alessandra said, her voice barely audible.
Joe looked at her. Her brown eyes reflected the fire, steady and fierce despite the exhaustion pulling at her features.
“We made it,” he echoed. “But we’re not safe yet.”
Joe pushed himself to his feet, the blanket slipping from one shoulder. "There's a kitchen through that door. The pantry used to be stocked when the queen summered here. Might still be something left."
Alessandra followed him, her bare feet whispering on the worn floorboards. The kitchen was smaller than the palace's, but well appointed. Dust coated the countertops, and a mouse had chewed through a sack of flour, leaving a white trail across the flagstones. Joe found a tin of hard crackers, a wheel of waxed cheese, and a jar of preserved pears in syrup. He carried them back to the hearth, where they sat cross-legged and ate in silence, the sweetness of the pears cutting through the salt of the cheese.
When the last cracker was gone, Alessandra set the tin aside. "The collars," she said, touching the iron at her throat. "If we can break a chain and a lock, maybe we can break these too."
Joe nodded. He extended his hand, and she placed hers in it. The familiar blue white spark flickered between their fingers, weak but present. He guided her hand to the runes on his collar. "Push," he said. "Like you did with the door."
She closed her eyes. A low hum built in the air, and the runes on his collar flared red before going dark. The iron split with a sharp crack and fell away. Joe gasped, the release of pressure he had not realized he carried flooding through him. He turned, placing his hand over her collar, and felt the same resistance give way. Her collar dropped into her lap, leaving a pale ring of unmarked skin.
Alessandra exhaled a shaky breath. "Seven years," she whispered. "And it just—"
"Just like that," Joe finished.
They washed in a basin of rainwater collected from a leaking gutter, scrubbing the grime of the escape from their skin. The storm showed no sign of slowing. Alessandra wandered to a window that overlooked the dark hillside. "Joe," she said. "Come look."
He joined her. Below, the forest had become a shallow lake, trees standing like half drowned sentinels in the churning brown water.
"Charlene's soldiers won't bother searching this," he said. "They won't find our footprints. They won't wade into that."
Alessandra turned from the window. The firelight traced the lines of her face. "Sleep with me tonight," she said. "I don't want to be alone. And I'm cold."
Joe looked at her for a long moment. "All right."
They dragged a dusty mattress from a servants' room and laid it before the hearth. The blankets still smelled of lavender. Alessandra lay down first, and Joe stretched out beside her, their bodies fitting together for warmth. The storm roared outside, but inside the circle of firelight, they held each other.
"Tomorrow," Alessandra murmured against his chest, "we find clothes."
"Tomorrow," he agreed.
Alessandra stirred against him, her back pressing into his chest. The warmth of her body seeped through the rough wool, but it was the slow, deliberate roll of her hips that made Joe's breath catch. She ground her ass against his groin, and he felt himself harden, a sudden ache that spread through his belly.
He lay still, uncertain. Was it accidental? A shift in sleep? But her movement came again, slower this time, a purposeful friction that left no room for doubt. His hand, resting on her hip, tightened.
"Alessandra," he said, his voice low.
She did not answer. Instead she reached back, her fingers finding his thigh, guiding him closer. Her ass pressed into him again, and he groaned softly, the sensation sharp and sweet.
He moved his hand up, sliding over her ribs, the curve of her waist, until his palm cupped her breast. Her skin was warm from the fire. She gasped as his thumb brushed her nipple, the peak hardening beneath his touch. He traced a slow circle around it, and she arched into his hand, a moan escaping her lips.
Joe's throat tightened. "Are you sure this is what you want?"
She turned her head, her brown eyes catching the firelight. "I want to forget," she whispered. "Forget that I'm a slave. Forget that we're being hunted by the most powerful monarch in Ummeriel. Just for tonight, I want to be something else."
He understood. The weight of seven years, of five years, of Motreysia's ashes, pressed down on them both. He could give her this.
He pressed his hips forward, letting her feel the full length of him against the cleft of her ass. She moaned softly, pushing back to meet him.
Then she turned, the blanket falling away, and her mouth found his. Her kiss was hungry, desperate, her tongue plunging past his lips. He tasted the salt of pears and something deeper, the raw need she had kept locked behind her guarded eyes since the moment they met. She wanted him. And he realized, with a clarity that cut through the storm, that he wanted her just as fiercely.
His hands roamed her back, tracing the ridges of her spine, the dip of her waist, the swell of her hips. She broke the kiss, panting, and straddled him, the heat of her sex pressing against his stomach. The firelight painted her in gold and shadow, her hair tangled, her eyes dark with want.
"Help me forget," she breathed.
Joe gave in completely. He sat up, his hands sliding around her waist, pulling her closer until her thighs locked against his ribs. The firelight played across her skin, casting shifting shadows that made her look like something born from the flames themselves. He kissed her again, deeper this time, his tongue tangling with hers as his hands explored the curve of her back, the dip of her spine, the soft swell of her hips.
She rocked against him, the heat of her sex sliding along his belly, leaving a slick trail that made him groan. He lowered his mouth to her throat, kissing the pale ring where her collar had rested, then lower, tracing a path down her sternum. She gasped when his lips closed around her nipple, her fingers digging into his shoulders. He suckled gently, then harder, drawing a shuddering moan from her lips.
"Joe," she breathed, her voice breaking.
He laid her back on the mattress, the wool blanket rough beneath her, and settled between her thighs. She was open, waiting, her eyes half-lidded and glazed with desire. He guided himself to her entrance, the head of his cock pressing against her slick folds. She gasped, her hips bucking, and he pushed inside.
The sensation was overwhelming. Her heat enveloped him, tight and wet, and he groaned as he buried himself to the hilt. She cried out, her back arching, her nails raking down his arms. He began to move, slow at first, each thrust drawing a wet sound that mingled with the crackle of the fire and the howl of the storm.
Alessandra wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him deeper. Her breath came in ragged pants, her eyes locked on his. "Don't stop," she whispered. "Please, don't stop."
He didn't. He drove into her harder, faster, the rhythm building until the world narrowed to the heat of their bodies, the slick slide of skin on skin, the desperate sounds they made together. She came with a cry that cut through the storm, her body clenching around him, and he followed moments later, spilling into her with a groan that came from somewhere primal and deep.
They collapsed together, breathless, tangled in sweat and firelight. The storm still raged outside, but inside, wrapped in each other's arms, they were something new. Something free.
