Joe is a slave serving the Queen Charlene Lockhart, a powerful magic user, a platinum blonde haired woman in her late 30s, ruler of the Kingdom of Qohovis, one of the Nine Nations on the continent of Ummeriel. He is a young man in his mid 20s with a slender frame, pale skin, dark brown hair and blue eyes. Joe was taken from his native nation of Motreysia and enslaved by the Queen after Qohovis destroyed Motreysia. Qohovis saw Motreysia as a threat for centuries due to the magical sensisitivy of Motreysians. Joe is kept naked at all times besides his collar and chain and serves the Queen at all times no matter how perverse her desires are and to mock the Motreysian people, keeping one of the last survivors as her personal pet. One of the councilmen Alistair Millington visits the Queen with his own slave, a female named Alessandra who is kept naked and chained like Joe. Alessandra is also in her mid 20s with pale skin, brown hair and brown eyes. Alessandra is also from the nation of Motreysia. The Queen purchases Alessandra from Alistair and decides to make her two slaves perform for her. She begins by locking the two slaves in private bed chambers and seeing how they interact. The Queen wants to watch them make love as a perverse voyeuristic experiment that she can watch. She also plans to manipulate the two's powerful magic potential as all Motreysians are born with powerful magical abilities and Joe and Alessandra are no exceptions. The two slowly get to know each other, finding out how long they have been slaves and how they ended up in the Kingdom of Qohovis as foreigners from the same country. Eventually give in to their attractions to each other but also decide to escape the Kingdom of Qohovis together. The two slaves explore the continent of Ummeriel, traveling through the kings of Qohovis, Meira, Vospeodal, Escad, Zechiugro, Vacrar, Acyla and Ascar. The two also have an emotional return to their home of Motreysia or the ruins of it, the finality setting in that their home, family and friends are all dead. All Joe and Alessandra have is each other. As their adventure progresses, the two discover that they are not only powerful magic users known as Elementrenders, Motreysian mages but royal heirs to the throne.

Chapter 3: The Hollow of the Hills

The rain came down in sheets, cold and relentless, plastering Joe's dark hair to his scalp as he pushed through the underbrush. His bare feet slipped on wet leaves and mud, every muscle screaming with exhaustion. Behind him, Alessandra's breath came in ragged gasps, her pale form a ghost in the gloom.

"Wait," she hissed, her voice cutting through the drumming rain. "Look."

Joe stopped, squinting through the downpour. A faint blue light pulsed somewhere ahead, steady and rhythmic, like a heartbeat. He pushed aside a curtain of thorny vines, their barbs scraping his arms, and found the mouth of a cave half hidden by moss-slicked stone.

"Quick," he said, holding the thorns back for her.

They stumbled inside, shivering, as the rain faded to a dull roar behind them. The cave opened into a small grotto, its walls covered in carved symbols that glowed with that same soft blue luminescence. The light pulsed in waves, warm and alive, casting shifting shadows across the stone.

Alessandra dropped to her knees, her body trembling. "What is this place?"

Joe crouched beside her, his hand instinctively finding her shoulder. "I don't know." He looked at the runes, at the way they seemed to respond to their presence. "But it feels... safe."

She looked up at him, her brown eyes wide in the blue glow. "Are we safe, Joe? Really?"

He had no answer. Only the storm howling outside, and the strange, pulsing light that seemed to recognize them both.

The storm began to ease, the drumming on the cave roof softening to a steady patter. Joe shifted, his back against the cool stone, and stared at the glowing runes. They seemed to breathe, pulsing in time with something deep in his chest.

"What do you think they mean?" Alessandra asked, her voice hushed. She had drawn her knees up, her arms wrapped around them for warmth.

Joe shook his head. "I don't know. But they felt familiar when we touched them. Like they were waiting." He traced a symbol in the air with his finger. "My mother used to tell stories about places like this. Sanctuaries, she called them. Hidden places where Motreysian magic still lived."

Alessandra's eyes glistened in the blue light. "I remember those stories. My grandmother told them." She paused. "I thought they were just fairy tales."

"Maybe they weren't."

Silence settled between them, broken only by the dripping of water from the cave mouth. Outside, the clouds began to thin, letting pale moonlight filter through the trees.

Joe pushed himself upright and crept to the entrance. He peered through the thorns, scanning the forest. "We're close to the summer home. Maybe half a mile east. I've been there with the Queen before. There's a hunting lodge nearby, always empty this time of year. We can hide there until nightfall tomorrow, then make our move."

Alessandra rose and joined him, her shoulder brushing his. "And then what? After we get supplies and clothes... where do we go?"

Joe opened his mouth, then closed it.

She pressed on, her voice trembling. "Motreysia is gone, Joe. There's nothing to go back to. And we're fugitives. The Queen will hunt us. She'll send her best trackers, her sorcerers. We can't outrun her forever."

He turned to face her. The runes cast soft shadows across her face, making her look fragile and fierce all at once.

"I know," he said quietly. "But we have each other. And whatever that light was out there, it led us here for a reason. We're not just slaves anymore, Alessandra. We're something else. I don't know what yet. But I'm going to find out."

She held his gaze, then nodded slowly. The rain stopped altogether, leaving only the drip of wet leaves and the soft pulse of the runes.

Alessandra's hand drifted to the wall, her fingers hovering over the nearest rune. The blue light intensified beneath her palm, pulsing faster, warmer. She gasped and pulled back, but the glow clung to her skin for a moment before fading.

"They reacted to you," Joe said, his voice barely above a whisper.

She tried again, this time pressing her palm flat against the stone. The runes brightened in a rippling wave, spreading outward from her hand like ripples on a lake. The symbols began to shift, rearranging themselves into patterns that felt almost like language.

"I can read them," she said, her eyes wide. "I shouldn't be able to, but I can."

Joe stepped closer, his shoulder brushing hers. "What do they say?"

Alessandra traced the symbols with her fingertips, her lips moving silently. "They're names. Old names. And places." She paused at a cluster of runes near the center of the wall. "This one... it says 'Sanctuary of the First Blood.' And beneath it..." Her voice faltered. "It's a warning. 'Only the heirs of the fallen throne may pass. All others shall be unmade.'"

Joe's blood ran cold. He looked at the runes, at the way they seemed to watch them, waiting.

"We're Motreysian," he said slowly. "But heirs? That doesn't make sense. I was just a farmer's son."

Alessandra shook her head, her brown eyes meeting his. "So was I. Or so I was told." She gestured at the wall. "But this place recognized us, Joe. The light in the forest, the spark when we touched. It's been calling us."

He reached out and pressed his own hand to the stone. The runes flared, and a deep hum resonated through the cave, vibrating in his bones. A section of the wall began to slide inward, revealing a narrow passage that descended into darkness.

The passage exhaled a breath of stale, cool air, carrying the scent of dust and old stone. Joe glanced at Alessandra, whose face was half lit by the fading glow of the runes. She nodded, her jaw set with determination.

He stepped first, his bare foot finding smooth stone worn by ages of unseen travelers. The passage sloped downward, curving gently, and the blue light from the grotto faded until only darkness remained. Joe reached behind him, his fingers brushing Alessandra's hand. She gripped them tightly.

"Wait," she whispered. She raised her free hand and murmured a word Joe didn't recognize. A soft blue flame kindled in her palm, casting pale light on the walls.

Joe stared. "How did you do that?"

"I don't know. It just came to me." She looked at her hand as if it belonged to someone else. "Like the runes taught me."

They pressed on, the tunnel opening into a chamber far larger than the grotto above. The ceiling arched high overhead, lost in shadow, and the walls were lined with alcoves filled with objects that gleamed in Alessandra's light. Gold. Jewel-encrusted weapons. Scrolls in crystal cases. A throne sat at the far end, carved from obsidian and veined with silver, empty and waiting.

Joe released her hand and moved toward the nearest alcove. A crown rested on a velvet cushion, its band of woven silver set with a single deep blue gem that pulsed in rhythm with the runes above. Beside it lay a matching circlet, smaller and more delicate.

"These are Motreysian," Alessandra breathed. She picked up the smaller circlet, her fingers trembling. "Royal regalia. I've seen drawings in old books, before the invasion."

Joe lifted the larger crown. It felt warm in his hands, familiar, as though it had been made for him. He turned it over and found an inscription etched into the inner band: *Jovan Senureius, Heir of the Northern Reach.*

His blood turned to ice.

The circlet slipped from Alessandra's fingers, clattering against the stone floor. The sound echoed through the chamber, sharp and final, before fading into silence.

She stared at Joe, her face pale in the blue light. "Jovan Senureius," she whispered. "The Northern Reach. That was the royal house of the highlands. My grandmother spoke of them as if they were legends."

Joe lowered the crown, his hands shaking. "I don't understand. My father was a farmer. We lived in a village at the foot of the mountains. There was nothing royal about us."

Alessandra knelt and picked up the circlet. She turned it over, and her breath caught. She held it out for him to see. Etched inside, in the same flowing script, were the words: *Alessandra Lamarelli Vane, Heir of the Silver Vale.*

Her eyes met his, wide and full of something between wonder and terror.

"I'm Alessandra Lamarelli Vane," she said slowly, as if testing the name on her tongue. "I never knew my full name. The slavers just called me 'girl' or 'Motreysian bitch.'"

Joe set the crown down and took her hands. The crowns lay at their feet, pulsing with that same rhythmic light.

"We're heirs," he said. "Both of us. That means our families... our bloodlines..."

"Were important enough to hide us," she finished. "To send us to remote villages where no one would look for royalty."

A tear slipped down her cheek. She wiped it away with the back of her hand, then laughed bitterly. "All those years as slaves. And we were the ones they were supposed to protect."

Joe pulled her into his arms. She clung to him, her body trembling against his. The runes on the walls pulsed brighter, as if approving.

"We're not slaves anymore," he murmured into her hair. "We're heirs. And we have a sanctuary full of weapons and gold and knowledge. The Queen doesn't know about this place. She doesn't know what we are."

Alessandra pulled back, her eyes red but fierce. "Then we learn. We train. And we take back what was stolen from us."

The storm softened to a murmur, the last of the rain dripping from the cave mouth like tears. Joe released Alessandra and retrieved the crowns, handling them with a reverence that made his hands steady again.

"We leave them here," he said, setting them back on their cushions. "Too dangerous to carry. But we know where they are now."

Alessandra nodded, her gaze lingering on the circlet before she turned away. "We'll come back. Once we have clothes, supplies, something to cover our collars."

Joe moved to the entrance and peered through the thorns. The clouds had broken apart, revealing a sky smudged with the first pale gray of approaching dawn. The forest dripped and glittered, washed clean.

"Half a mile," he said. "Maybe less. The summer home sits on a hill with high walls, but I know a way in. A service passage the groundskeepers use."

They slipped out of the cave together, bare feet squelching in the wet earth. Joe guided her through the underbrush, keeping to the shadows of the ancient trees. The air smelled of wet stone and pine, cold and clean against their skin.

The hill rose before them as the sky lightened, the summer home a dark silhouette against the gray horizon. Walls of white stone enclosed the estate, topped with iron spikes that gleamed with moisture.

Joe led Alessandra around the eastern face, where ivy grew thick over the stone. He pressed his fingers against a section of mortar that looked no different from the rest, and a hidden latch clicked. A section of the wall swung inward, revealing a narrow passage.

He pulled a small iron key from a crevice in the stones where he had hidden it months ago, during a previous visit with the Queen. "I took it from a guard's belt. He never noticed."

They slipped inside, and Joe sealed the passage behind them.
