Chapter 7: The threshold
The marble floor of Richard’s foyer was a shock of cold through her bare knees. Sara kept her eyes down, fixed on the polished toes of his leather loafers. The silence was absolute, broken only by the distant, rhythmic tick of a grandfather clock. The scent of him—old-spice cologne, lemon polish, and something faintly musky—filled the air.
He let her kneel. Seconds stretched into a minute. She could feel the short skirt riding up, the cool air on her exposed thighs, the vulnerable dampness between them. The sheer red top felt like a costume, a joke she’d played on herself.
“Look at you,” his voice came, not from above her, but from the side. He was leaning against the banister, observing her like a specimen. “Dressed like a two-dollar whore waiting for a bus. I almost didn’t recognize you. Then again, maybe this is what you’ve always been underneath all that noise you make.”
She flinched but held her position, her spine straight, hands on her thighs. The humiliation was a live wire, but it was also the point. She had chosen this. That was the terrifying truth.
“Crawl here,” he said, his tone conversational.
She moved forward on her hands and knees, the marble unforgiving against her palms. She stopped before his feet. He reached down, not touching her skin, but hooking a finger under the strap of the red top. He pulled it down her shoulder, exposing one breast. His thumb brushed over her nipple, rough and clinical.
“See? No need for all that empowerment talk. This is what you really want. To be put in your place. To be used.” He grabbed a handful of her curls, not painfully, but with absolute control, and tilted her head back. “Open your mouth.”
She obeyed, parting her lips. He held her gaze as he unzipped his trousers. He was already hard, his cock springing free, thick and veined. The memory of it stretching her was no longer a memory; it was an imminent reality. He guided himself to her lips.
“Suck it. Like you mean it. And look at me while you do it.”
She took him into her mouth, the taste of salt and clean skin flooding her senses. She worked her tongue along the underside, hollowing her cheeks, as she’d done a hundred times before—but never like this. Never with this searing, shameful awareness of her own role. His eyes, cold and evaluating, watched every flicker of her lashes, every submission.
“Good girl,” he muttered, his hips giving a slight thrust. “You know how to service a man. Should’ve been doing this years ago instead of arguing politics at my dinner table.”
He fucked her mouth with slow, deliberate strokes, his hand still fisted in her hair, controlling the pace. Tears of strain welled in her eyes, but she didn’t close them. She let him see. When he pulled out, a string of saliva connected her lip to his glistening tip.
“Stand up. Turn around. Bend over the newel post. I want to see that ass I had you show me.”
Her legs were shaky as she rose. She turned, gripping the dark, carved wood of the banister. She heard the rustle of his clothing, the tear of a foil packet. He was putting on a condom. The mundane sound was somehow more violating than anything else.
He didn’t touch her with tenderness. His hands gripped her hips, his fingers digging in. The broad, blunt head of his cock pressed against her entrance, still slick from her own arousal and the spit from her mouth.
“This what you came for?” he grunted, and pushed forward in one relentless, splitting drive.
Sara cried out, a sharp, involuntary sound that echoed in the vaulted foyer. He was impossibly big, stretching her burning, filling her to a point of dizzying fullness. He didn’t wait for her to adjust.
“Yeah, you’re loose already,” he sneered, pulling back and slamming home again. “My son ever fuck you like this? Or does he ask permission first?”
The cruelty of the words, paired with the brutal, physical pounding, unraveled her. Each thrust rocked her body against the hard wood. She could hear the wet, filthy slap of their skin meeting, the animal sounds of his breath. His rhythm was punishing, a claim staked with every drive of his hips.
“Tell me,” he demanded, his voice a harsh rasp. “Tell me what you are.”
“I’m… I’m your whore,” she gasped, the words torn from her.
“Louder.”
“I’m your greedy fucking whore!” she cried out, and as she said it, a coil of pleasure, sharp and shocking, tightened deep in her belly. The degradation was becoming the engine of her climax.
He swore, his pace becoming erratic, frantic. One hand left her hip and snaked around her front, fingers finding her clit, rubbing rough, frantic circles. It was too much—the invasion, the friction, the sheer overwhelming violation of it.
Her orgasm hit like a system failure, a white-hot detonation that ripped a scream from her throat. Her muscles clenched violently around him, milking him, and with a final, brutal thrust and a guttural groan, he came inside the condom, his body shuddering against her back.
For a long moment, there was only the sound of their ragged breathing. He stayed buried inside her, his weight heavy. Then he pulled out, the sudden emptiness a shock. She heard him dispose of the condom, the zip of his trousers.
She stayed bent over the post, unable to move, spent and shaking. The cold air hit the sweat on her back.
“Get up,” he said, his voice back to its normal, dispassionate tone.
She straightened, her legs trembling. She pulled her top back over her shoulder, a pathetic attempt at modesty. He was already walking toward his living room, not looking back.
“There’s a bathroom down the hall. Clean yourself up. Then get out.” He paused at the doorway. “You did alright. For a first proper lesson. I’ll text you.”
He disappeared into the dim living room.
Sara found the bathroom, a sterile, beige space. She looked at herself in the mirror—smudged mascara, swollen lips, the red lace top now seeming absurd. She cleaned up with a washcloth, the warm water a small comfort. The face that looked back was a stranger’s, hollow-eyed and flushed with the aftermath of something she couldn’t yet name.
She walked back through the silent foyer, picked up her purse from where she’d dropped it. She let herself out, the afternoon sun blinding after the interior gloom. As she drove away, the throb between her legs was a constant, aching reminder. It wasn’t satisfaction she felt. It was something darker, more addictive. It was the terrifying understanding that a door had been opened inside her, and she had no desire to close it. His final words hung in the air, a promise and a threat. I’ll text you. She knew, with a sick, thrilling certainty, that she would be waiting.
