Chapter 3: The Devil's Bargain
The white pill dissolved on Sara's tongue like bitter chalk, chased instantly by the searing slap of Dimitri's vodka. It burned a trail down her throat, momentarily eclipsing everything – the muffled thump of the bass, the stifling velvet air, Charly's ragged breathing beside her. Then, like a dam bursting, the MDMA surged, amplified tenfold. The booth’s dim lights fractured into blinding fractals. The deep thud of the music wasn't just sound anymore; it was liquid mercury vibrating in her bones, in her teeth. She gasped, the sequined fabric of her half-undone top suddenly abrasive sandpaper against her hypersensitive skin.
"See?" Dimitri murmured, leaning so close she could smell the expensive vodka and cold malice on his breath. His shark’s grin was a predator’s leer in the strobing gloom. "Fast acting. High quality. Ten million buys the best, malen'kaya ptichka. And the most... interesting experiences."
Charly found his voice, a desperate rasp. "Sara! What did you do?" He lunged forward, grabbing her arm. His grip was hot, almost painful. "What the hell was that?"
Sara turned to him, her pupils swallowing the irises, black pools reflecting the fractured light. A wild, feverish energy crackled off her. "Charly," she breathed, her voice sounding distant, thick. "Ten million. Ten million. Think! No more tiny apartment. Bali. That studio by the ocean we saw online. Real freedom!" Her words tumbled out, jumbled with giddy intensity. "Just... just a pill. Felt worse at uni parties."
Boris watched, impassive as a stone idol, his dark eyes tracking every micro-expression on their faces. He picked up the black credit card Sara had earned with her buttons, tapping it thoughtfully against his thick knuckles. The sound was unnervingly loud to Sara’s heightened senses. "Freedom has many prices," he rumbled, his gravelly voice cutting through Sara's euphoric haze. "Ten million buys comfort. But real value..." He paused, letting the bass fill the silence. "...real value lies in seeing how far potential bends. How deep desire runs. How much... resistance costs." His gaze lingered on Charly, whose face was a mask of anguish and indecision. "Now, let’s see how far you’ll bend for the real money, Sara. Start by finishing what you began. The last button."
Sara looked down at her top. The final clasp near her ribs gleamed under the low light. Ten million. Bali. Ocean waves. The thought was a warm, golden wave washing over the jagged edges of the drug. Dimitri’s gaze was a physical weight, cold and demanding. Boris’s was a dark promise. Charly’s hand still gripped her arm, trembling. She felt untethered, floating, powerful and terrifyingly vulnerable all at once. The sequins weren't sandpaper anymore; they were tiny, cool stars against her flushed skin. Her fingertip brushed the clasp.
"Don't, Sara, please," Charly choked out, his voice cracking. "This isn't freedom. This is... this is..."
"What?" Sara turned her dilated eyes on him, a sudden flash of irritation slicing through the euphoria. "What is it, Charly? What are you really afraid of? That I'll do it? Or that you want to see me do it?" The words hung in the chilled air, sharp and dangerous. She saw it then – the flicker, deep in his dark eyes. Not just fear. Not just possessiveness. A raw, shameful spark of something else, quickly smothered but undeniably there. Fascination. Hunger.
The recognition hit her like a jolt. It wasn’t just the Russians playing a game.
Dimitri chuckled, a low, icy sound. "Ah. The husband finds his own appetites... inconvenient." He swirled his vodka. "The button, Sara."
Her thumb found the clasp. It was cool metal, a tiny anchor in the swirling chaos. She looked at Charly, searching his face, seeing the war raging – terror battling that buried, dark thrill. His silence was louder than any plea. He won’t stop me. He might even...
Snick.
The final clasp gave way.
The front of her halter top sagged open. Cool air rushed over the lace cup of her bra and the smooth expanse of skin above it. She didn't try to hold it closed. The sensation was electric, a shockwave of exposure and defiance that mixed horribly with the drug’s rush. She felt utterly seen, utterly exposed, yet bizarrely powerful in her surrender. A trophy displayed.
Boris gave a single, slow nod. Dimitri’s smile widened, predatory satisfaction gleaming. "Magnificent," he breathed. He didn't look at the card Boris held. The zeros were already tallied in the air.
Charly made a strangled sound. He released her arm, his fist clenching at his side, knuckles white. He stared at the floor, his jaw working, unable to look at her, unable to look away from the Russians' triumph. The air thickened with his humiliation and conflicted desire.
The new drug, mingling with the MDMA, was a serpent coiling in Sara's veins. The initial euphoria was morphing. The lights weren't just fractals; they were vibrating blades. The bass was a physical assault. A wave of nausea surged, followed immediately by a terrifying, liquid warmth spreading through her limbs, making them heavy. Her thoughts felt slippery, disjointed. Dimitri’s face swam in her vision – sharp cheekbones, icy eyes, that cruel curve of his lips. He seemed sharper, more real than anything else in the room.
"Feeling it now, little bird?" Dimitri murmured, leaning in again. His voice was honey laced with venom. "The world getting... brighter? Softer?" He reached out, not touching her skin, but tracing the air an inch above her exposed collarbone. The proximity sent a jolt of pure, chemical-fueled sensation through her. She swayed slightly.
"You're burning up," Dimitri observed, his tone clinically detached yet somehow intimate. He lifted his hand, holding it palm up towards Boris. Without a word, Boris pulled a chilled champagne flute from an ice bucket Sara hadn’t noticed and placed it in Dimitri’s waiting hand. Dimitri held it out to Sara. "Drink. Cool down. Celebrate your... acquisition."
The champagne bubbles fizzed hypnotically. Sara’s mouth was parched, cottony. The chill of the glass was irresistible. She took it, her fingers trembling, and brought it to her lips. The crisp, cold liquid was bliss on her tongue, momentarily cutting through the chemical fire. She gulped it down, heedless of the overflow that trickled down her chin, onto her exposed skin.
"Slowly," Dimitri chided softly, but his eyes glittered with amusement. As she lowered the glass, wiping her chin with the back of her hand, he moved. Fast. One hand cupped the back of her neck, surprisingly strong. The other tipped the champagne bottle still in the ice bucket, pouring a thin, icy stream directly onto the skin revealed by her open top. Sara gasped, the shock of cold on her heated skin making her arch instinctively.
Before she could react, Dimitri’s mouth was on hers.
It wasn’t a kiss of passion. It was a claim. Cold, demanding, tasting of vodka and power. Sara froze, the cold champagne soaking into her bra, Dimitri’s grip unyielding. The conflicting sensations – the shocking cold, the invasive heat of his mouth, the drug-induced hypersensitivity – short-circuited her brain. For a second, she didn’t pull away. The world narrowed to the pressure on her neck, the taste on her tongue, the terrifying, unwelcome thrill that spiked through the chemical haze.
Charly erupted. A guttural roar tore from his throat, raw and primal. "GET OFF HER!" He launched himself forward, blind rage overriding caution, overriding fear, overriding everything but the sight of another man's mouth on his wife’s.
He didn't get halfway.
The silent bodyguard materialized like a wall of shadow. One massive hand shot out, catching Charly square in the chest with brutal efficiency. The impact was sickening, stopping Charly dead in his tracks. Air exploded from his lungs in a pained wheeze. He stumbled back, crashing into the low velvet sofa, knocking over an empty glass that shattered on the thick carpet. He gasped, clutching his chest, his face grey with shock and agony.
Dimitri broke the kiss as casually as he’d started it. He looked down at Sara, her lips slightly swollen, her eyes wide with shock and the chaotic storm of the drug. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, his expression chillingly calm. "Spirited," he remarked to Boris, as if commenting on a horse. "But predictable." He turned his ice-blue gaze onto Charly, crumpled and wheezing on the sofa. "Control your animal, Boris. He spoils the atmosphere."
Boris gave a curt nod. The bodyguard stepped forward, looming over Charly, a silent, immovable threat. Charly could only stare, tears of pain and helpless rage welling in his eyes, his gaze locked on Sara.
Sara stood frozen, champagne cooling on her skin, Dimitri’s taste lingering sourly in her mouth, the drug making the scene pulse with nightmarish clarity. The sequined top hung open, a symbol of her cheaply bought exposure. The black card lay on the table beside Boris’s hand, a grotesque trophy. She looked at Charly, broken and gasping, then back at Dimitri’s cold satisfaction.
The initial rush was gone, replaced by a churning vortex of fear, shame, and the relentless chemical tide distorting reality. Her hand holding the champagne flute shook violently. Dimitri reached out, gently, almost tenderly, and took the glass from her before she dropped it.
"Much better," he purred, his finger tracing the wet path the champagne had made down her neck. "Now the real game begins. Sit." He gestured towards the sofa opposite Charly. "Let's talk about Bali." He smiled, all teeth. "And what comes before the beach."
Sara swayed. The velvet floor seemed to tilt. She stumbled towards the sofa Dimitri indicated, collapsing onto it as her legs gave way. Her eyes met Charly’s across the short distance. In his pain-filled gaze, beneath the rage and fear, was a terrible, unasked question. What have we done? And beneath that, a flicker of something darker, more complicated, that the drug forced her to see: a reflection of her own horrifying, exhilarating fall. The muffled bass throbbed on, indifferent to the cage they’d entered, the velvet walls closing in.
