Chapter 1: The Toast That Changes Everything

The champagne flute felt slippery in Vishal’s hand. Too warm. Across the crowded reception hall, Vikram swayed, a sloppy grin plastered on his face as he accepted another drink from a well-meaning uncle. A drunkard loser. Vishal’s lip curled, just slightly. He barely registered the thrumming beat of the Bollywood remix or the kaleidoscope of silk saris swirling on the dance floor. His gaze, sharp and assessing, had already found its target.

She sat alone at the edge of the chaos. Saumya. Her name tasted exotic, unfamiliar. Young. Unbelievably young. Her bridal lehenga was a riot of crimson and gold, intricate embroidery catching the light from the thousands of tiny fairy lights strung overhead. Yet, she seemed folded in on herself, a delicate bird trapped in a gilded cage. Her hands, adorned with intricate henna, clutched the fabric of her skirt, knuckles white. A plate piled high with fragrant biryani and glistening rasmalai sat untouched before her.

Vikram stumbled towards her, tripping over the hem of his own sherwani. He leaned down, said something, his breath visible even from this distance. Saumya flinched, a tiny, almost imperceptible recoil. She didn’t look at him. Her eyes, large and dark, darted nervously around the room, finally landing on the towering floral arrangements as if seeking escape.

Pathetic. The word echoed in Vishal’s mind, directed equally at Vikram and the entire predictable spectacle. He took a deliberate sip of the mediocre champagne. Time to stir the pot.

He moved through the crowd like a shark parting minnows. A nod here, a murmured greeting there – his presence commanded a ripple of deference. Powerful. Influential. The man Vikram desperately needed to please. He stopped directly beside Vikram, clapping a heavy hand on his new employee's shoulder. Vikram jerked, sloshing amber liquid down his already stained kurta.

"Sir! Vishal sir!" Vikram slurred, attempting a bow that nearly sent him sprawling. "You came! Honored!"

"Wouldn't miss the big day, Vikram," Vishal said, his voice smooth as velvet lined with steel. He raised his glass, his eyes never leaving Saumya. She’d gone perfectly still, sensing the shift in attention. "A toast. To the happy couple. May your life together be... prosperous." He paused, letting the word hang, heavy with unspoken meaning. His gaze locked onto Saumya’s. "And fulfilling."

Vikram beamed, oblivious to the subtext, clumsily raising his own glass. "Thank you, sir! Very kind! Very kind!"

Saumya’s eyes flickered to Vikram, then back to Vishal. A spark of something – fear? Awareness? – flashed in their depths before she quickly lowered her lashes. She seemed to shrink further into her chair.

Vikram, buoyed by alcohol and misplaced confidence, leaned closer to Vishal, his breath sour with whisky and desperation. "Sir, about that project lead position... you mentioned, before the wedding..."

"Later, Vikram," Vishal dismissed him with a wave. "Enjoy your bride. Celebrate." He deliberately turned his back on the man, his entire focus narrowing on the trembling figure in red and gold. Vikram hovered for a second, confusion warring with drunkenness, before staggering away towards the open bar, already forgotten.

The space around Saumya suddenly felt cavernous, isolating. The din of the party faded to a dull roar. Vishal stepped closer, the scent of her jasmine garlands mingling with the expensive, woody notes of his cologne. He didn't sit. He loomed, a dark, immovable presence beside her untouched feast.

"You haven't eaten." His voice was a low murmur, intimate, cutting through the noise meant only for her. He gestured with his glass towards her full plate. "Nerves?"

Saumya kept her eyes downcast, tracing the intricate gold thread on her skirt. A tiny shake of her head was her only response. Her throat moved as she swallowed.

"The lehenga is exquisite," he continued, his gaze sweeping over her. It wasn't admiration; it was appraisal. Calculating. "Suits you. Pure silk. Traditional craftsmanship. Expensive." He let the last word settle. "You appreciate fine things, Saumya?"

Her head snapped up then, startled he knew her name. Her eyes met his, wide and uncertain. "I... it was chosen by Vikram's mother," she whispered, her voice barely audible, melodic yet strained.

"Ah. Family obligation." Vishal nodded slowly, understandingly. He took a sip of champagne, watching her over the rim. "Tell me, Saumya. What do you want? Truly want?" He leaned down slightly, the heat of him radiating, invading her space. The smell of champagne and power was overwhelming. "Beyond duty. Beyond... him."

She flinched again, pulling back an inch. "I... I don't..."

"Don't pretend shyness doesn't hide desire," he murmured, his voice dropping even lower, a vibration she felt rather than heard. He saw the pulse jump wildly in her slender throat. "Look at this place." He gestured broadly at the opulent hall – the glittering chandeliers, the mountains of food, the hired musicians. "This is nothing. Scraps. I can give you palaces, Saumya. Cars that cost more than this entire wedding. Clothes spun from moonlight. Experiences you can't even imagine." He paused, letting the images shimmer in the air between them. "Freedom."

Her breath hitched. Her knuckles gripping her lehenga were bone-white. She didn't look at him, but she didn't pull away again. She was listening. Trapped. Intrigued?

He moved infinitesimally closer. His lips were near her ear now. The heat of his breath stirred the tiny hairs at her temple. She smelled of jasmine and nervous sweat and something utterly untouched. Innocence. It was intoxicating.

"Tonight," he breathed, the word barely a sound, laden with dark promise. "After all this... performance is over. When he stumbles upstairs, too drunk to even find the bed." He paused, letting the distasteful image form. "Don't lock your door."

Saumya froze. Utterly still. Not breathing.

"Let me in," Vishal whispered, his voice thick with intent. "Let me show you what luxury feels like. What pleasure truly means." He lingered, his gaze tracing the line of her jaw, the curve of her lips painted bridal red. "Let me ruin that untouched innocence properly. Make it worth something."

He straightened then, the sudden distance feeling like a physical blow. Saumya remained rigid, staring straight ahead, her face drained of color beneath the bridal makeup, her untouched plate a cruel mockery beside her. Vishal gave her one last, lingering look – a predator marking its chosen prey. He didn't wait for a response. He didn't need one. The hook was set. He turned and melted back into the glittering throng, leaving her alone in the suffocating spotlight of his proposition, the throbbing music and the scent of perfume suddenly cloying, the untouched food a symbol of everything about to be devoured. He walked towards the exit, pausing only to snag another champagne flute from a passing waiter, the picture of bored elegance, already certain of the night’s true culmination. Across the room, Vikram laughed too loudly, spilling his drink again, completely unaware of the seismic shift beside his untouched bride.
