Chapter 1: The Hypnosis Mist: A Live Transformation
The apartment smelled like old paper and dust. Lila pushed a stack of Astrophysical Journal reprints aside, clearing a spot on her cluttered desk for her phone mount. A fern drooped slightly on the corner, protesting another week without quite enough light. Behind her, a whiteboard bloomed with complex fluid dynamics equations, arrows pointing to a sketch of a nebula. Einstein and Marie Curie posters hung slightly crooked on the walls.
"Okay, testing, testing... sound okay?" Lila's voice echoed slightly in the quiet room before she hit ‘Go Live’ on TikTok. Her usual audience of science geeks and curious learners started trickling in. "Hey everyone! Lil_Sci_Whiz here, reporting from mission control." She grinned, a little lopsided, pushing her glasses up her nose. Her oversized sweater swallowed her frame. "Super exciting mail day. Fan send!"
She held up the small, unmarked cardboard box. It felt unnervingly cold. "No return address, which is... mysterious." She peeled back the tape, the ripping sound loud in the sudden silence of the apartment. Inside, nestled in grey packing peanuts, was a sleek, metallic cylinder. About the size of a small perfume bottle, it was gunmetal grey with a single, cryptic label: Hypno-Mist™. Elevate Your Influence. Breathe Deeply.
"Hypno-Mist?" Lila read aloud, her brow furrowing. Curiosity warred with a tiny prickle of unease. "Elevate your influence? That sounds... potent. And maybe slightly dodgy? Like, ethically?" She chuckled nervously, turning the cylinder in her hands. It was heavier than it looked, cool to the touch. "Right, okay, let's see what the small print says." She squinted, bringing it closer to the phone's camera. "'For personal enhancement. Inhalation induces a state of heightened receptivity and amplified charisma. Effects may vary. Use responsibly.' Huh. Vague much?"
Chat scrolled rapidly:
Sounds sketch Lila!
Open it!
Science experiment! Do it!
Probably just scented air lol
"It is pretty vague," Lila agreed, her thumb tracing the simple nozzle on top. "But it is fan mail. And... hey, maybe it's just aromatherapy? Lavender for the nerves? Could do with some of that before midterms." She laughed again, the sound a little forced. Her palms felt slightly damp against the cool metal. That tiny spark of unease flared again, but the chat was chanting DO IT DO IT DO IT.
She pressed the nozzle. A faint hiss.
It happened fast. The cylinder slipped. Not much, just a fumble born of nerves. It tumbled from her grasp, landing on the keyboard with a soft clack. But the nozzle was depressed.
A plume of gas erupted. Not smoke, but mist. Thicker than steam, swirling with an odd, iridescent sheen like oil on water, catching the light from her ring lamp. It didn't dissipate. It hung in the air directly in front of her face, swirling hypnotically. It smelled faintly floral, but underneath was something else… ozone? Iron?
Instinct made her gasp. A deep, involuntary inhale.
She coughed once, sharply. Then... warmth. It started low in her belly, a sudden flush spreading upwards, prickling her skin beneath the thick sweater. It wasn't unpleasant, initially. Just... strange. Intense.
"Whoa," she breathed, blinking. Her gaze flicked to the live view on her phone screen. Her own face looked back. Round cheeks. Messy bun. Tired eyes behind practical glasses. The equations on the whiteboard behind her seemed suddenly complex, alien. Irrelevant.
A thought surfaced, unbidden, clear as a bell: My hair looks flat.
Then another: I should have worn the V-neck.
The warmth in her chest intensified, morphing. It wasn't just heat; it was a craving. An abrupt, gnawing emptiness centered right behind her sternum. It demanded filling. With... eyes. Attention. Validation. Any kind of attention. Now.
Her lips, without conscious command, pressed together. Puckered slightly. Pushed out.
She caught the expression in the phone screen. A duck face. The kind she privately mocked on other creators. The kind that felt utterly foreign on her face.
A wave of confusion washed over her, sharp and cold amidst the spreading internal heat. What am I doing? But the thought was instantly drowned out by a new voice in her head, smooth and insistent, overriding her own: It's better. They'll look. They'll like it. More. You need more.
The craving twisted, sharper. More desperate. It felt like panic, but directed outward, demanding external response. She leaned closer to the screen, her pout intensifying. Her hand rose, not to push her glasses up this time, but to tug the collar of her sweater down, just an inch, exposing the hollow of her throat. Was it enough? Should she show more?
"Guys?" Her voice sounded different. Higher? Breathy? "Did you... um... see that? The mist? Pretty wild, right?" She forced a giggle. It sounded tinny. Fake. They need to like it. They need to comment. They need to see me.
Chat was a blur now.
Lila you ok?
What was that stuff?
Omg duck face Lila? Lol
That mist looked sus AF
The comments about the duck face and the mist being 'sus' registered, faintly irritating the insistent voice in her head. They don't get it. They need to see how good it looks. How good I look.
The warmth pulsed through her, settling deep. The voice was louder now, drowning out her own rising alarm. Forget the equations. Forget the nebula. Look at the screen. Look at me. I need them to look. I need... more.
She touched her lips, still pursed. They felt unfamiliar. Her reflection in the dark phone screen looked different too. Less like Lila the Science Whiz, more like... someone else. Someone who belonged in the bright, shallow glare of endless scrolling feeds. The craving tightened its grip, a cold fist around her thoughts, squeezing out everything but the desperate need for the next hit of attention. The warmth lingered, a strange, unsettling comfort in the hollow space where her self-respect used to be. It felt... necessary.
