Chapter 5: The Descent
Sunlight, sharp and unforgiving, sliced through the gap in the cheap pink curtains Lila had impulse-bought last week. It landed directly on her face. She squeezed her eyes shut, groaning. The familiar scent of her old detergent – clean cotton – battled with the cloying sweetness of the new 'Unicorn Dream' room spray clinging to everything. For a dizzying second, the voice was silent. Just the throb behind her temples from last night's cheap wine and the echo of bass-heavy music.
This is ridiculous, she thought, the words clear and sharp in the quiet. Her voice. Her own voice. The orange foundation. The sequins cutting into my skin. Trina’s hands… A shudder rippled through her. She pushed back the fluffy pink duvet – another Trina-mandated purchase – and swung her bare legs over the side of the bed. Cool air hit her skin. She looked down. Her knuckles were white where she gripped the mattress edge.
Determination, fragile but fierce, bloomed in her chest. Today. Today she would claw back. No makeup. Her glasses – where were her glasses? She spotted them, miraculously unbroken, on the cluttered nightstand, half-buried under empty tubes of glitter gel and a dried-up liquid lipstick in 'Kiss My Ass Pink'. She shoved the debris aside, the crinkling plastic loud in the stillness, and slid the familiar frames onto her nose. Better. She ran a hand through her hair, still tangled from sleep, resisting the ingrained urge to immediately smooth it into a sleek ponytail. Just be you. SciLila.
She padded barefoot towards her tiny bathroom, avoiding the minefield of discarded outfits littering the floor – sequined bras, ripped fishnets, the infamously tiny booty shorts from Trina’s place. The mirror above the sink was smudged with fingerprints and the ghostly residue of setting spray. She braced her hands on the cool porcelain and looked.
The reflection startled her. Not the orange mask or the startled brows, but her own face. Pale. Soft. A faint constellation of freckles across her nose bridge, usually concealed. Eyes wide behind the lenses, shadowed by the faint bruises of exhaustion. Her lips, unpainted, looked vulnerable. Plain, the voice murmured, a slick, insidious whisper suddenly coiling from the back of her skull. Ordinary. Forgettable.
Lila flinched, gripping the sink harder. "No," she whispered aloud. "This is me."
Is it? The voice was cool, mocking. The ‘you’ who got two hundred views explaining quantum entanglement? Or the ‘you’ who got two million likes shaking her ass? Images flashed: Trina’s triumphant grin, the dizzying scroll of comments – ‘YAAAAS QUEEN!’ ‘SlayLila!’ ‘Science Barbie got BACK!’. They were watching, the voice purred. Really watching. Trina showed you the way. Showed you how to be someone worth seeing. Worth wanting.
Lila’s gaze flickered. Away from her own eyes to the chaotic countertop. Foundation bottles in shades too dark and too orange. Powders promising ‘flawless filter’. A jungle of mascara wands. Her reflection seemed to shrink, swallowed by the clutter of her attempted transformation. They’ll laugh, the voice hissed, sharper now. They’ll say ‘Look at the nerd trying to be normal again. Pathetic. Boring.’ Trina was right. The secret’s in the presentation. Always.
A tremor started in her hands. The craving sparked, low and insistent in her gut. Validation. Attention. Numbers climbing. It felt like a physical ache, deeper than the hangover. Before she could consciously decide, her fingers were scrambling, knocking over a bottle of nail polish (Barbie Pink, naturally). She grabbed the heavy, full-coverage foundation Trina had insisted was her 'perfect match'. The cap popped off with a brittle snap.
Her hands moved with a frantic, practiced rhythm she hated. Dot, dot, dot on forehead, cheeks, chin. The thick, beige paste felt like wet plaster as she smeared it across her skin, erasing the freckles, the pallor, the shadows. The voice hummed approval. Smoother. Better blank canvas. Next, the heavy concealer under her eyes, patting furiously. Hide the weakness. Brow pencil, etching thin, high arches again, erasing the soft natural curve. More drama. Always more. Mascara, thick and clumping. Eyes bigger. Doll-like.
Her phone, charging nearby, buzzed. A notification. @GlitterBomb94 mentioned you in a comment! The jolt of electricity was undeniable. See? the voice crooned. They’re waiting.
Without thinking, her trembling finger stabbed the 'Live' button on TikTok. The camera flipped on, capturing her mid-transformation: one eye heavily made-up, the other still bare, skin half-covered in thick foundation, hair a chaotic mess.
"OMG HI GUYS!" The chirp that came out of her mouth was too high, too bright, a parody of Trina’s cadence. Her real voice tried to surface, thick with unshed tears and guilt, but the persona slammed down. She forced a wide, lipstick-free smile. "Just, like, jumping on super quick! Woke up feeling kinda… fresh? Needed a little pick-me-up, you know?" She grabbed her setting spray, shaking it vigorously, the rattle loud in the small room. Mist clouded the lens for a second.
Comments started flooding the side of her screen, emojis bursting like fireworks.
> SlayLila! U look 🔥 even half done!
> What foundation is that? NEED!
> Is this the ‘natural’ look? Lol jk queen u slay!
> Missed ur lives! Trina taught u well!
"Uh, this?" Lila held up the foundation bottle, her hand still shaking slightly. She focused on the tiny text on the label, anything to avoid looking directly into the camera’s unblinking eye. "It's, um, Full Coverage Dream? Shade 'Caramel Kiss'? But, like, I think I need to mix it maybe? It’s kinda… orange?" A nervous laugh bubbled up, sounding desperate even to her own ears. Stop apologizing! the voice snapped. Own it!
She grabbed a sponge, dabbing furiously at her jawline. "Just trying to, you know, get that flawless vibe before the day starts! Gotta keep the glow-up going, right?" She tried another smile, feeling the foundation crack slightly around her mouth. The comments scrolled faster.
> Ur transformation is iconic!
> Science to Slay! Best glow-up everrr
> Do u miss ur old stuff tho? The science stuff?
> ^lol who cares abt boring science she’s hot now
> Seriously tho, ur so much more fun now! Love the new u!
The question about her old content hit like a sucker punch. Guilt and confusion churned in her stomach. "Oh! Um, the science?" Her voice wavered, losing its forced brightness for a split second. She saw her own conflicted eyes in the screen – one masked, one still painfully real. "That was… okay, yeah, I mean, it was…" She trailed off, flustered. The craving for approval warred violently with a sudden, crushing wave of shame. They think it was boring. They like this better. They LIKE me better like this.
Exactly, the voice soothed, oily and sure. Tell them. Tell them how much better this is.
Lila’s painted-on smile slipped. Her breath hitched. She looked down at her lap, at the stained makeup wipe clutched in her foundation-smeared hand. "It was… kinda basic, wasn’t it?" she whispered, the words tasting like ash. "Just… facts. Graphs. This…" She gestured vaguely at her face, at the chaotic pink room visible in the background, her voice cracking. "This is... more? Like… exciting?" The plea for confirmation was naked in her tone.
The comments exploded.
> YAS QUEEN ADMIT IT! U WERE BORING!
> SlayLila embracing her truth!
> Girllll u were cute but now u’re FIRE
> Who cares abt science when u have that ASS?
> So much more relatable now!
The foundation felt like drying mud on her cheeks as Lila stared at the scrolling comments. "So much more relatable now!" pulsed on the screen, a hammer blow to her fragile resolve. Her breath hitched, a ragged sound lost under the synthetic pop music playing faintly from her phone’s speakers. They liked boring SciLila less. This is proof.
"Thanks, you guys!" she chirped, the forced brightness scraping her throat raw. She dabbed nervously at the orange streak near her hairline with a makeup sponge, the gesture automatic, rehearsed. "Science is cool and all, but, like, self-expression is everything, right?" The words tasted like ash. Tell them, the voice purred inside her skull, smooth as poisoned honey. Tell them how freeing it is to be desired.
A new wave of notifications erupted, faster, sharper.
> u look good but needs more T&A babe
> show us the girls! 🍒
> ditch the hoodie! low cut top NOW
> push up bra next vid or unfollow
> fr tho babe show some cleavage, earn those views
> yeah science bitch needs to science those tits out
Lila’s hand froze mid-dab. The sponge dropped onto the cluttered counter with a soft plop. Heat flooded her neck, crawling up past the foundation line, a flush of humiliation warring with a terrifying, unwelcome thrill. The crude words vibrated in her bones, echoing the insistent thrum of the voice. See? it whispered, smug and undeniable. They know what they want. They know what you are now. Give it to them.
She swallowed hard, the motion tight. Her gaze darted from the screen to her reflection – the one heavily made-up eye wide with a confused panic, the other still bare and pleading. The oversized band hoodie she’d thrown on this morning suddenly felt like a suffocating shield. Pathetic, the voice hissed. Hiding the goods Trina unlocked. Images flashed: Trina’s knowing smirk, her possessive grip, the dizzying surge of likes after the booty-shaking video. Power. Attention. Validation. It was addictive, chemical.
"Wow, uh... you guys are wild today!" Lila managed, forcing a shaky laugh that sounded more like a cough. She avoided looking directly at the specific demands scrolling past. Her free hand, seemingly of its own accord, drifted up to touch the hoodie’s zipper pull, cool metal against her fingertips. It's just clothes, the voice reasoned, silky and persuasive. The right clothes show confidence. Command attention. Isn’t that what you crave? Deep down? Trina understood.
She flicked her gaze back to the screen. The comments were relentless, a barrage demanding flesh, framing objectification as empowerment.
> DO IT SlayLila! Show us u got the goods!
> Stop teasing babe, give the people what they want!
> Push-up bras are POWER honey! Own it!
A strange calm descended, cold and detached. Her trembling fingers found the zipper pull again. The voice wasn't just whispering anymore; it was a drumbeat syncing with the frantic pulse in her temples. Power. This is power. Look how they watch. Look how they beg. She remembered the weight of Trina’s hand on her hip, forcing the twerk, the thump of the bass, the camera’s hungry eye. The sheer, terrifying intensity of being the absolute focus.
The sheer, terrifying intensity of being the absolute focus vibrated through her bones, a sickening counter-rhythm to the frantic pulse in her throat. Her reflection – half-truth, half-lie – stared back from the phone screen. The comments scrolled, relentless: ‘DO IT’, ‘show us’, ‘prove it’. The voice inside purred, slick and undeniable. Look at them beg. This is currency. This is control.
"Okay, okay, chill!" Lila laughed, the sound brittle and sharp, cracking like cheap plastic. She waved a dismissive hand, the gesture too wide, too theatrical. "You guys are, like, so extra today! It’s just a chill morning stream." Her gaze darted away from the demanding words, fixing instead on a stray bottle of glitter highlighter rolling near the sink. Anything but the screen. "Seriously, talking about cleavage? It’s not even noon!" Liar, the voice hissed, amused. Look how your fingers tremble on the zipper.
She took a shaky breath, the stale air thick with Unicorn Dream and the tang of drying foundation. "It’s just… kinda warm in here, actually?" she offered weakly, her painted-on smile feeling stiff. "This hoodie is, like, super cozy, but maybe…" Her voice trailed off as her other hand, seemingly of its own volition, joined the first at the zipper pull. The cold metal bit into her skin. Warmth is an excuse. Weak. The voice dripped scorn. Own the power. Give them the show.
With a jerky movement, she grabbed the hem of the oversized band hoodie – her last, thin shield – and yanked it up over her head in one rough motion. Static electricity crackled in her tangled hair. Beneath, she wore a flimsy, baby pink camisole Trina had declared ‘essential lounge-wear’. The thin straps dug into her shoulders. The sudden exposure to the air, even in the stuffy room, prickled goosebumps across her upper arms. "See?" she chirped, forcing brightness, her eyes wide and slightly unfocused, refusing to look down at the screen where the comments were exploding. "Just… comfier!"
Comfort is delusion, the voice mocked. They see the lie. Give them truth. Her gaze flickered down, betraying her, catching the scrolling frenzy: ‘YES!’, ‘MORE!’, ‘STRAP!’. That familiar, gnawing hunger for validation, sharpened by the hypno mist’s persistent whisper, flared hot and demanding in her gut. It swamped the prickle of shame. Power. Attention. It was a physical pull, stronger than resistance.
Lila’s hand, trembling slightly, rose slowly towards her left shoulder. Her index finger hooked under the delicate spaghetti strap of the camisole. She swallowed, the sound audible over the tinny pop music still playing. "This thing," she mumbled, her voice losing its forced cheer, dropping into something lower, almost detached. "Always slips." With a quick, decisive tug, she pulled the strap down over the curve of her shoulder, dragging the flimsy fabric of the camisole neckline with it, just an inch. Enough. The soft swell of cleavage, previously hidden, was abruptly exposed to the harsh bathroom light and the unblinking eye of the camera.
A shocked inhale, sharp and sudden, echoed in the small room – her own. The cool air hit newly revealed skin, making her shiver. On screen, the comments became a frenzied blur of fire emojis, eggplants, and demands for ‘MORE!’. The voice inside crowed, triumphant. See? This is what feeds you. Lila stared at her reflection in the phone, at the exposed skin, at the clash of her heavily painted face and the vulnerable dip of her collarbone. Her free hand instinctively fluttered up, not to cover herself, but to touch the delicate chain of a necklace Trina had given her – a tiny, glittering padlock resting just above the revealed curve. Perfect, the voice sighed. Her painted lips stretched into a wide, vacant smile, mirroring Trina’s signature look, while something cold and trapped screamed silently behind her eyes.
