Chapter 5: The Full Set
The buzzer sounded, a sharp electronic shriek that sliced through the humid evening air. Aidan stood on the sidewalk, his finger still hovering near the intercom button as if he could take it back. Maya’s voice crackled through the speaker, bright and casual. “Come on up, door’s unlocked.”
Her apartment building smelled of old carpet and cumin. He took the stairs, each step a drumbeat in the quiet stairwell. His knuckles had barely grazed her door when it swung inward.
Maya stood there, backlit by the golden glow of her apartment. She wore a sheer black robe, tied loosely at her waist. The fabric did little to obscure the silhouette beneath. Her pink hair was mussed, artfully so. “You’re right on time,” she said, as if he’d arrived for a study group. She stepped back, granting him entry. “I was just doing some edits.”
The scent hit him immediately—vanilla candle, and beneath it, that same sharp, musky electricity from before. It was embedded in the velvet drapes, the plush rug. Her bedroom door was ajar, the amber light from within spilling out like liquid.
“Thirsty?” she asked, padding barefoot toward the kitchenette. “I’ve got water, or some gross kombucha my roommate left.”
“I’m fine.” His voice sounded rough, unused.
“Suit yourself.” She shrugged, the robe slipping off one shoulder. She didn’t pull it back up. Instead, she gestured toward the bedroom. “Come see. I put a rough edit together. I think you’ll appreciate the composition.”
He followed, his movements automatic. Her room was exactly as he remembered, yet every detail now felt accusatory. The velvet darkness, the tripod standing sentinel beside the rumpled bed, its camera a silent black orb. On her desk, her laptop glowed. Sketches were scattered nearby—quick, fluid lines in charcoal that unmistakably captured the curve of his back, the tension in his shoulders. One was a detailed study of his hand. They made him feel dissected.
“Take a seat,” she said, nodding to the edge of the bed. She settled before the laptop, her robe falling open as she bent forward. He looked away, focusing on a flaw in the plaster of the wall. The soft click of her trackpad filled the room.
“Okay,” she said, her tone shifting to one of academic critique. “So, the first series was about intimacy as a performance, right? The aware subject. But for the final submission, I’m focusing on texture. Flesh. Fluid. The visceral reality of it.”
She turned the screen toward him. “This is just a slideshow.”
He had to look.
The first image was his own face, eyes half-closed, mouth parted. The lighting carved the planes of his cheekbones, shadowed the hollow of his throat. It was a vulnerable, private expression he’d never seen on himself. The next was a wider shot: her legs wrapped around his hips, her head thrown back. Then came the close-ups. The previous day’s preview had been a hint. This was the full lexicon. Macro shots of his tip pressed against her, gleaming. The slow, impossible stretch. His thickness engulfed. The moment of release inside her, captured with a terrifying, biological clarity. Click. Click. Click. Each image was a hammer blow.
“The lighting in that last sequence is kinda perfect, don’t you think?” she murmured, leaning close to the screen. “The way it catches the… well. You see.”
He felt sick. He felt hard. The contradiction was a nauseating spiral in his gut. “Why are you showing me this?”
“Context,” she said simply, swiveling the laptop back. “Today’s shoot needs to complement, not repeat. I need one more set. The final piece.” She stood up and let the robe slither to the floor. She was naked underneath, pale and slender. She walked to the tripod, checking the angle. “I was thinking we start with you on the chair. The hard lines against the softness. A nice contrast.”
A plain wooden chair sat in the center of the room. He sat, the wood cold through his jeans. She approached him, her gaze analytical, not erotic. She unbuckled his belt, unbuttoned his jeans. Her fingers were cool and efficient. “Lift up,” she instructed, and he obeyed, raising his hips so she could pull his jeans and briefs down to his ankles. The air touched his skin. He was already fully, shamefully erect.
“God, it really is unreal,” she said, not touching him, just looking. She fetched her camera from the tripod, fitted a different lens. The camera whirred as she took a few test shots of him sitting there, exposed. The shutter sound was rapid, mechanical. “Okay, good.”
She put the camera back on the tripod, set a timer. A small red light began to blink. “Ten-second delay,” she said. Then she straddled him, her knees on the chair on either side of his thighs. She was wet; he could feel the heat of her against his stomach. She reached between them, took him in hand, and guided him to her entrance.
“Hands on my hips,” she directed, her voice low and focused. He complied, his fingers settling on the sharp bones. The red light blinked steadily.
She lowered herself, a slow, inexorable descent. The fit was still impossibly tight, a breathtaking, molten strain. Her eyes were on the camera lens over his shoulder. She let out a controlled sigh as she seated herself fully, taking all of him. The camera clicked. Then, after a pause, clicked again.
She began to move, a slow, rocking undulation designed for the frame, not for sensation. Her eyes kept darting to the lens. “Turn your head to the left a little,” she whispered. “Jaw tight. Good.” The camera clicked, capturing his profile, the strain in his neck.
After a minute, she stopped, lifting herself almost off of him. “Hold still,” she breathed. She leaned back, one hand braced on his knee for balance, and reached for the camera again. She detached it from the tripod, brought it down between their bodies. He felt the cool plastic of the lens brush his skin as she took extreme close-ups of where they were joined. The whir and click were obscenely loud in the quiet room. She captured the slick stretch, the shudder of her own flesh as she pushed down again to take more. “Perfect,” she whispered, to the camera, not to him.
She re-mounted the camera, reset the timer. The red light blinked once more. “Now, forget it’s there,” she said, and this time her rhythm changed. It became deeper, less performative. Her gaze finally locked onto his, and her cool control fractured. Her breath hitched. “It’s so deep,” she gasped, her art-speech vanishing. Her nails dug into his shoulders. Her hips pistoned, taking him with a frantic, needy urgency. The camera clicked steadily, a metronome to their movement.
Her climax hit her silently at first, a sheer tightening of every muscle, her mouth a round ‘o’ of shock. Then a high, sharp cry was torn from her as her inner walls fluttered and clenched around him with a shocking, rhythmic force. The sensation, the visual of her coming utterly apart, shattered the last of his control. He thrust up into her, helpless, and spilled with a low groan, his head falling forward against her collarbone as the pulses racked him. The camera clicked one final time.
For a long moment, the only sounds were their ragged breaths and the hum of the laptop. She relaxed onto him, a weight of damp skin and satisfaction. He was still inside her. She nuzzled his ear. “That,” she panted, “is a wrap.”
She disentangled herself, stood on slightly shaky legs, and walked to the tripod. She reviewed the last shot on the small screen, zooming in. A small, genuine smile touched her lips. “Yeah. That’s the one.”
Aidan pulled his clothes up, his movements clumsy. The stickiness on his skin felt like a brand. “So it’s done? You have what you need?”
“For the project? Absolutely. The portfolio is complete.” She turned to face him, hugging the camera to her chest like a cherished toy. Her eyes, clear and piercing, held his. “The submission is tomorrow.”
The relief that washed through him was so profound it left him weak. It was over.
Her smile widened, turning placid and knowing. She gestured vaguely toward the sketches on her desk. “But I’ve been thinking. This whole process… it’s really unlocked a new direction for me. A deeper, more sustained study.”
She put the camera down and stepped close, tracing a single, proprietorial finger from his navel down to his waistband. Her voice was light, conversational.
“Elara gets back at, what, noon tomorrow? Plenty of time for a morning debrief. Don’t you think?”
