Chapter 7: The Full Set
The shower at his apartment did nothing to scrub the feeling away. The steam carried the ghost of vanilla and sex, clinging to his skin even under the sharp, pine-scented gel. He dressed in clean jeans and a grey henley, the fabric soft and ordinary, a costume for normalcy. Elara’s key turned in the lock just as he was stuffing his laundry into the hamper, hiding the evidence.
“You’re home!” she called, her voice bright with travel fatigue. She dropped her suitcase with a thud and wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his chest. She smelled of airplane air and her familiar jasmine shampoo. “I missed you so much. It was a good conference, but God, the people.” She leaned back, studying his face. “You okay? You look… tired.”
“Long week,” he said, the lie smooth from practice. He kissed her forehead. “Missed you too. How was the flight?”
They ordered takeout, ate on the couch. She talked about panels and networking, her hands animated. He nodded, smiled at the right moments, and saw, superimposed over her face, the cool, predatory focus in Maya’s eyes as she watched their reflection. He felt a phantom pressure on the back of his head, fingers tangled in his hair.
His phone buzzed on the coffee table. A text. He didn’t need to look.
> Maya: The stills came out better than I hoped. You have a real talent for this.
He flipped the phone face down. Elara was mid-sentence about a keynote speaker.
“Sorry,” he said. “Work thing.”
“On a Friday night? Tell them to piss off.”
“I will.”
He didn’t.
The next evening, the excuse was flimsy even to him—a missing charger he’d supposedly left at Maya’s during one of his ‘tech support’ visits. Elara was curled with a book, happy he was helping her sister. “Tell her I’ll call her tomorrow,” she said, not looking up.
The walk to Maya’s building felt like treading water against a strong current. Each step was heavier than the last.
She opened the door before he could knock. The sheer black robe she wore was transparent in the backlight from her bedroom, outlining her narrow frame. No greeting. She just turned and walked away, knowing he would follow.
The room was different again. The mirror was gone. The black velvet remained, but now the dominant light was a single, diffused golden lamp, casting long, intimate shadows. The tripod stood sentinel beside the bed. On the desk, the laptop was open. A bottle of oil with a faded label sat next to a neat stack of film canisters.
“Close the door,” she said, her back to him.
He did. The click of the latch was final.
She gestured to the laptop. “I did a rough edit. A sequence. Wanted your opinion.”
It was a command. He approached. On the screen was a full-screen image of his own face, eyes closed, mouth open against her skin. She clicked. The next photo was a extreme close-up, the junction of their bodies, a distortion of flesh and stretched intimacy. Click. Him, on his back, her astride him, her head thrown back in a silent cry captured in crystalline detail. Click. The final shot from the mirror session, the visual echo of his release on her tongue, her eyes looking directly into the lens.
She let the slideshow run on a loop. A silent, obscene retrospective.
“The project’s submitted,” she said, her voice matter-of-fact. “Got the confirmation. These are just… outtakes. For my private collection.” She finally turned to him. The robe gaped slightly. “But I was looking at them tonight, and I realized I missed a perspective. A… participant’s point of view. It feels incomplete.”
He stared at the looping images. “Maya, I can’t—”
“It’s just one more set,” she interrupted, her tone dismissive, as if negotiating a triviality. “For archival integrity. Then we’re done. Promise.” The word hung in the thick air, meaningless.
She walked to the tripod, adjusted the angle so it was pointed at a worn, wingback chair she’d dragged into the center of the velvet. She beckoned him. “Sit.”
His legs moved without his brain’s permission. He sat. The chair was low, his knees jutting up.
Maya untied her robe, let it slither to the floor. She didn’t pose. This was procedural. She picked up the bottle of oil, poured a slick, amber pool into her palm. The smell, warm and nutty, mixed with the room’s vanilla. She approached him, her expression one of focused preparation.
Her hands were warm and slippery as she took him in her grasp, stroking him to a full, aching hardness. The oil made everything glide, intense and too smooth. “We need the lighting right,” she murmured, more to herself than him. She stepped back, went to the camera, peered through the viewfinder. “Okay. Good.”
She set a timer. A soft, rapid beeping counted down.
Then she was on him, straddling his lap, her knees pressing into the sides of the chair. She guided him inside her with a slow, inexorable sinking motion. The oil made the stretch even more pronounced, a breathtaking, full sensation that forced a sharp gasp from his throat. She didn’t move at first, just sat fully impaled, letting the camera’s motor drive whirr and click, capturing the still image of their joining.
“Hands on my hips,” she directed, her voice tight. He complied, his oily fingers gripping the sharp bones. She began to move then, a slow, grinding roll of her pelvis, a deliberate dance for the lens. Her eyes were on the camera, not him. “Perfect,” she breathed, as the clicks continued.
She paused again, her body clenched tightly around him. With a weird, detached grace, she leaned back, bracing one hand on his knee, and reached for the camera itself. She twisted it, brought it close—so close he could hear the autofocus whine. She took a series of shots, macro close-ups, the lens practically touching where their bodies met. The intimacy was grotesque, clinical. The whirring click was the loudest sound in the world.
Satisfied, she replaced the camera and resumed riding him, her pace increasing. The slick friction, the visual of her small body moving on his, the relentless clicking—it built a pressure in him that was as much panic as pleasure. She bit her lip, her cool facade cracking into raw, greedy need. “Don’t you dare come yet,” she hissed, her rhythm becoming frantic, sloppy. “Not until I…”
Her orgasm hit her silently, a violent rigidity that seized her whole frame. Her inner muscles clamped down on him in a series of relentless pulses, and that was it. The command, the sensation, the overwhelming, guilty heat—it broke him. He came deep inside her with a choked-off groan, his fingers digging into her hips hard enough to leave marks.
The camera clicked through the final tremors, capturing the slump of her body against his, the sheen of sweat and oil on their skin.
For a long minute, the only sound was their ragged breathing. The camera’s motor had gone silent.
Maya finally pushed herself off him, disengaging with a soft, wet sound. She stood on slightly shaky legs, walked to the camera, and reviewed the shots on the small screen. A slow smile spread across her face, pure and uncomplicated.
“Yeah,” she said, to herself. “That’s the one.”
She looked at him, still sitting slick and spent in the chair. She wiped a hand across her abdomen, glanced at it. “Project’s complete,” she said, her tone light, final.
But her eyes, in the golden gloom, held no finality at all. They were dark, hungry pools reflecting the endless loop still playing on the laptop across the room. A promise, not of an ending, but of a permanence he had just agreed to, one click at a time.
