Chapter 19: The Fashion Consultant
Thomas found himself in the city's warehouse district, the air thick with the scent of diesel and damp concrete. He checked the address Izzy had scribbled on a napkin, his heart beating a little faster than usual. The building was a nondescript brick structure with an unmarked steel door that seemed to swallow the daylight. Taking a deep breath, he raised his hand and knocked firmly, the sound echoing in the quiet alley.
The door creaked open after a moment, revealing a small man with a pale complexion and intense dark eyes. "You are Thomas?" the man asked, his voice carrying a distinct Eastern European accent, clipped and efficient. Thomas nodded, feeling a trickle of sweat down his back despite the cool air. "I am Pavel," the man said, stepping aside to grant entry. "Alessia is expecting you."
Thomas stepped into a space that was a stark contrast to the industrial exterior—a cluttered, vibrant workshop humming with energy. The air was filled with the whir of sewing machines and the rich smell of fresh fabric and coffee. Sketches and patterns adorned the walls, and a worn-out couch sat in one corner, looking inviting amidst the chaos.
Then, from behind a rack of garments, a woman emerged, her presence immediately commanding the room. "Thomas, so lovely to finally meet you," she said, her voice warm and melodic, with a slight Italian lilt. Alessia was stunningly beautiful, with sharp features that seemed carved from marble, and long, dark hair that cascaded over her shoulders. She was impeccably dressed in a tailored black jumpsuit that hugged her curves and accentuated her confident posture. Her green eyes, much like Izzy's but somehow more piercing, scanned him from head to toe, not critically, but with a professional curiosity. "Izzy has told me so much about you," she continued, extending a hand adorned with simple, elegant rings. Thomas shook it, his own hand feeling clumsy in her firm, assured grasp. "I hope she didn't overshare," he managed to say, his voice steadier than he expected. Alessia's laugh was a light, musical sound that made the room feel brighter. "Only the good parts, I assure you."
"Only the good parts, I assure you." Alessia’s gaze swept over his baggy t-shirt and jeans with a knowing, almost clinical precision. "Let's get comfortable, shall we? Can I offer you some coffee?"
Thomas, feeling exposed under her appraisal, nodded quickly. "Yes, please. Coffee would be great."
"Pavel, two espressos, per favore," Alessia said without turning, her attention fixed on Thomas as she gestured toward a cozy nook. Pavel vanished toward a small kitchenette with a silent nod. She led Thomas to a pair of low, modern chairs nestled between fabric racks. "Sit, please."
He sank into the surprisingly comfortable chair, its deep cushions embracing him. Alessia sat opposite, crossing her legs with a fluid, practiced grace. Her posture was professional, but Thomas could see a playful intensity behind her eyes, a spark that promised this was more than a simple fitting.
Pavel returned swiftly, placing two small ceramic cups of dark espresso on the low table between them. The rich, bitter aroma filled the space. "Grazie, Pavel," Alessia said, dismissing him with a soft smile.
She took a slow sip, her eyes never leaving Thomas’s. "So, fashion," she began, placing her cup down with a precise click. "Tell me what you feel when you get dressed in the morning."
Thomas hesitated, his fingers tracing the rim of the espresso cup. “I don’t really… feel anything,” he admitted, the words feeling inadequate. “Clothes are just functional. They cover you up, you know?”
He took a quick sip, the bitter coffee grounding him. “I guess I’ve always just worn what’s loose. What hides things.” A hot flush crept up his neck. “It’s easier than people looking.”
Alessia listened, her expression softening into one of genuine understanding. She leaned forward slightly, her gaze intent but not unkind. “What things, exactly, are you trying to hide, Thomas?”
Her eyes traveled over his shoulders and down his torso with a slow, appraising sweep that was entirely devoid of judgment. A faint, knowing smile touched her lips. “Because from where I am sitting, there is nothing there to hide.”
The directness of her statement, coupled with that look, short-circuited his usual defensiveness. A strange warmth spread through his chest, something entirely separate from embarrassment. “Okay,” was all he could manage, his voice a little rough.
“Good,” Alessia said, her tone shifting back to business as she placed her cup down with a definitive click. “Then we can begin the real work. Pavel, the tape.”
Pavel materialized silently, a long, yellow measuring tape coiled neatly in his hand. Alessia took it with a nod, her fingers brushing his, and the assistant retreated back into the shadows of the fabric racks. "Stand up for me, please," she instructed, her tone all business as she unspooled the tape.
She started with his shoulders, her knuckles pressing firmly into his scapula as she stretched the tape across his back. The touch was clinical, but her presence was intensely close, the subtle scent of her perfume—bergamot and something darker—filling his personal space. "Relax your posture, Thomas," she murmured, her breath warm against his neck. "I need your natural stance, not the one you use to hide."
Her hands moved down his arms, measuring the length from shoulder to wrist with efficient tugs. Then she was in front of him, measuring his chest, and as she wrapped the tape around his torso, her forearm brushed deliberately against his nipples through the thin cotton of his t-shirt. A jolt, sharp and electric, shot through him. She called each measurement out to Pavel, who noted it on a small notepad.
She dropped to one knee to measure his outseam and inseam, and the air in the workshop seemed to grow still and thick. The tape ran down the outside of his leg with professional speed. "Now the inside leg," she said, her voice low. She positioned the end of the tape high on his inner thigh, her fingers splayed, her thumb pressing into the sensitive flesh there.
As she brought the other end down to his ankle, her knuckles grazed the growing bulge in his jeans. It wasn't an accident. She paused for a fraction of a second, applying the faintest pressure, before completing the measurement.
The contact was deliberate and electric, a stark contrast to the clinical nature of the tape. Thomas sucked in a sharp breath, his entire body tensing. Heat flooded his face, a familiar wave of shame, but it was quickly overtaken by a different, more potent sensation.
Alessia gave him a quick, knowing smile before she stood up and walked over to confer with Pavel. Thomas realized his nervousness was just old instincts, and his growing erection was exactly what Alessia was trying to achieve.
This was all part of it. This was the education Izzy had promised. He watched them whisper, Pavel’s intense eyes flicking toward him once, then back to Alessia. He didn’t try to adjust himself or hide the obvious strain against his jeans. The old Thomas would have folded in on himself, but this new version just stood there, letting the feeling burn.
Alessia turned back to him, her expression one of pure, unadulterated satisfaction. “The measurements are perfect,” she said, her voice a low purr. “Now we see discuss fabrics and colors.”
“Now we discuss fabrics and colors.” Alessia gestured for him to sit again, her movements fluid as she retrieved a large binder from a nearby shelf. She sat closer this time, the couch dipping under her weight, her thigh almost touching his.
She opened the binder to reveal swatches of material, each one meticulously labeled. “Fabric is not just cloth,” she began, her voice taking on a lecturing but intimate tone. “It is a language. A thick, structured twill says you are serious and professional, that your words have weight.” Her finger, tipped with a perfect manicure, traced a sample of navy blue wool. “But this soft, brushed cotton jersey,” she said, flipping to a slate grey piece, “it whispers something entirely different. It invites touch, suggests a relaxed and approachable creativity.”
Thomas found himself leaning in, genuinely captivated by her explanation. The intellectual part of his brain was engaged, processing the idea that his wardrobe could be a tool. “So it’s about controlling the message,” he said, thinking aloud.
“Precisamente.” Her smile was brilliant. She flipped to a page of vibrant colors. “And color is the volume of that message. A crisp white shirt is professional, clean, smart.” She then tapped a swatch of deep burgundy. “But this? This is confident. It is passionate. It is, without saying a single word, very, very sexy.”
As she leaned over to emphasize her point, the neckline of her jumpsuit gaped slightly. Thomas’s gaze inadvertently dropped to the shadowed cleft of her cleavage, the smooth skin a stark contrast to the black fabric. The educational thread in his mind snapped. He shifted, trying to discreetly adjust the persistent, uncomfortable tightness in his jeans.
“You have good bones, Thomas,” she continued, her eyes flicking down to his lap for a heartbeat before meeting his gaze again, a knowing glint in hers. “You should not be afraid of clothes that follow your lines. A fitted merino wool sweater in a charcoal grey would make you look industrious and sharp, while a soft linen shirt in this olive green would bring out the gold in your eyes, make you look creative and fun.”
She closed the binder with a soft thud, the lesson apparently over. “The right combination does not just change how others see you. It changes how you feel in your own skin.” She placed a hand on his knee, her touch warm and electric through the denim. “It can make you feel powerful. And that, caro, is the most attractive quality of all.”
He could only nod, his throat dry. The workshop hummed around them, but all he could focus on was the weight of her hand and the frantic beat of his own heart.
The weight of her hand on his knee felt like a brand. “So,” Alessia said, her voice cutting through the static in his head. “If you agree, I will develop a complete fashion plan for you.” She finally removed her hand, leaning back to survey him with a cool, professional air that felt at odds with the intimacy of the moment. “I will source everything based on your measurements.”
She gestured vaguely toward the racks of fabric and half-finished garments surrounding them. “You will return here in, perhaps, two weeks. Everything will be ready for you to try on.” The proposition was simple, but the air in the room thickened around it. “A head-to-toe transformation, waiting in this room.”
Thomas’s mind, still reeling from her touch, snagged on a practical, grounding thought. “Okay, but… what’s the cost for something like that?” he asked, the words feeling clumsy. “This seems… extensive.”
Alessia waved a dismissive hand, her rings catching the light. “Do not worry about that for the moment.” Her smile was a quick, sharp thing. “Consider it an investment. In the new you.”
She stood, the movement fluid. “There is just one more part of the intake process.” She turned her head slightly toward the shadows where Pavel stood silently observing. “Pavel, I need you to run to the atelier on Grand. Tell Marco I need the swatch book for that Japanese technical fabric, the one with the carbon fiber weave.”
Pavel’s intense eyes flicked from Alessia to Thomas, his expression unreadable. “Of course,” he said, his voice a low rumble. “Anything else?”
“Yes, actually.” Alessia tapped a finger against her lips, thinking. “Pick up the order from the leatherworker on Twelfth. And then stop by my apartment—the doorman will let you in—and water the orchids. The white ones are looking thirsty.”
The list of errands was long and oddly domestic. Thomas watched Pavel absorb the instructions without a single question, a faint, knowing smirk playing on his lips as he shrugged on a thin black jacket. The assistant’s gaze met Thomas’s for a brief second as he moved toward the door, the smirk deepening into something that looked like a silent congratulations.
Then the heavy steel door clicked shut, its echo final. Thomas was alone with Alessia in the sudden, profound quiet of the workshop, the only sound the rapid thrum of his own heart.
The silence after Pavel’s departure was dense, amplifying every small sound—the shift of fabric, the hum of a distant motor, the too-loud beat of Thomas’s heart. Alessia didn’t move for a long moment, just watched him from across the room, her expression unreadable. Then, she moved closer to him with a warm smile that seemed to cut through the tension.
“Okay, Thomas,” she said, her voice low and steady. “Let’s get a proper look at the canvas. Take off your shirt for me.” She gestured casually with one hand. “I need to see exactly what kind of figure I’ll be clothing.”
Thomas’s breath hitched, his mind flashing back to Izzy’s similar command in her apartment, but this felt different, more clinical yet more charged. He only hesitated for a second, his fingers fumbling with the hem of his baggy t-shirt. Then, with a resolve that surprised him, he pulled it over his head and dropped it onto the worn couch beside him.
The cool air of the workshop hit his skin, raising goosebumps on his arms and chest. He stood there, exposed, his lanky frame on display under the bright industrial lights, and forced himself not to hunch his shoulders. Alessia’s green eyes traveled over him with a slow, appraising intensity that was both terrifying and exhilarating.
Alessia’s gaze was a physical pressure, tracing the lines of his collarbones, the subtle definition of his sternum, the flat plane of his stomach. “Good,” she murmured, the word a soft exhalation that seemed to vibrate in the quiet room. “The structure is there. It’s just been… waiting.”
She closed the distance between them, her polished appearance a stark contrast to his bare skin. Her fingertips, cool and smooth, brushed against his shoulder, then trailed down his arm. “You carry all your tension right here,” she observed, her touch light but deliberate. “In your shoulders, in your back. You’re always braced for impact, aren’t you?”
Thomas swallowed, his throat dry. “Old habit,” he managed, his voice rough.
“Habits can be broken.” Her hand slid to the center of his chest, her palm flat against his skin. He could feel the steady, surprising warmth of it seep into him. “Breathe,” she commanded softly. He did, a shuddering intake of air that made his ribs expand under her hand. “See? The world didn’t end.”
She smiled then, a real, uncalculated curl of her lips that transformed her face. “Now, stand up straight for me. I want to see the full picture.”
Thomas, feeling the weight of her appraisal, had instinctively lowered himself onto the worn couch after discarding his shirt. The coarse fabric of the cushions felt rough against his bare back. Alessia remained standing, her arms crossed, that evaluating gleam still in her eyes.
"I want to see the full picture," she repeated, her voice soft but firm.
He took a sharp breath, then pushed himself up from the couch, the movement deliberate. As he rose to his full height, the blood rushed, and he knew his erection was plainly evident in his baggy jeans, a stark outline against the denim that he made no attempt to conceal.
Alessia took a sharp breath in, her professional composure faltering for a single, telling moment. Her eyes, previously focused on the lines of his shoulders, dropped and stayed there. "A fitted shirt will certainly highlight your build," she said, her voice slightly huskier than before.
She reached out, her fingers tracing the lines of his torso again, but the motion was slower now, more deliberate. Her thumb brushed over his hip bone, her attention clearly divided between her stated task and the obvious truth straining against his jeans. Her hands drifted down to the waist of his pants, her knuckles pressing against the tense muscle of his lower abdomen.
Her fingers found the cold metal of the button in front. They rested there, not yet applying pressure, but the intention was as clear as the look in her eyes. Thomas watched her, the air in the workshop humming with a new, dangerous energy. "Do you need to see more of the canvas?" he asked, his voice low and surprisingly steady.
Alessia’s eyes flicked up to meet his, a challenge and an invitation in their green depths. Her smile was slow and knowing. "For a truly bespoke fit?" she murmured, her thumb stroking the button. "Every measurement is crucial."
Thomas didn’t break eye contact. His fingers, which usually fumbled with his own insecurities, found the cold metal of his button with a strange certainty. He popped it open. The rasp of the zipper lowering was deafening in the quiet workshop.
He pushed the stiff denim down over his hips, letting the jeans pool around his ankles on the concrete floor. He stood in his boxers, the grey cotton doing nothing to conceal the rigid shape beneath the fabric. Alessia’s gaze dropped, and a slow, appreciative smile touched her lips.
Her breath caught. "Mio Dio," she whispered, the Italian exhalation filled with genuine awe.
Then, in one fluid motion, he hooked his thumbs into the waistband of his boxers and pushed them down. He kicked them aside, standing completely bare under the bright lights, his erection a stark declaration. The cool air brushed his skin, but he felt only the heat of her stare.
Alessia’s professional composure shattered. "Cazzo," she breathed out, the word sharp and visceral. Her hand rose, not to touch him, but to cover her parted lips, her eyes wide with a hunger that was anything but clinical. She took him in, every inch, her earlier assessment of his ‘structure’ now rendered utterly insufficient. Her professional composure dissolved into something raw and hungry. A slow, appreciative smile spread across her face, entirely different from the polished ones she’d offered before.
“Well,” she breathed out, the word hanging in the air between them. “Izzy certainly undersold the merchandise.” She closed the small distance, her gaze locked with his. “You don’t need clothes to look powerful, Thomas. You just need the right audience.”
Her fingers, cool from the air, traced a line from his sternum down to his navel. He shuddered, his own breath catching. This was nothing like the nervous excitement with Izzy; this was a deliberate, testing pressure. “Is this part of the evaluation?” he asked, his voice rough.
“Consider it a fitting,” she murmured, her hand sliding lower, her knuckles brushing against him. He jerked involadely, a gasp escaping his lips. “The most important one.” Her touch was confident, exploring the length of him with a firm, knowing grip that made his knees feel weak. “The fabric has to be right, but the foundation… the foundation is everything.”
He reached for her, his hands finding her waist, pulling her against him. The sleek black jumpsuit felt cool and smooth under his palms, a stark contrast to the heat building between them. She allowed it for a moment, leaning into the contact, before placing a hand on his chest and gently pushing him back. “Patience,” she chided softly, her green eyes glittering. “My turn.”
Her fingers went to the first button on her jumpsuit. The click of it opening was precise in the quiet room. Then the next, and the next, each one revealing a sliver of olive skin and a black lace edge. She never broke eye contact as she worked her way down, the front of the garment falling open.
He sank back onto the worn couch, the coarse fabric a rough reminder of reality against his bare skin. She stood over him, the jumpsuit open to her waist, her posture utterly self-possessed. “Pavel will be back sooner than we’d like,” she said, her voice now all business, though her eyes were dark with promise. She let her gaze travel over his naked form one more time, a final, calculating assessment.
“I don’t have time for a full evaluation today,” she stated, a small, conspiratorial smile playing on her lips. “But I can ensure that you are satisfied with your experience and looking forward to more.”
