Chapter 6: Entering the Circle
Thomas wasn’t usually a fan of Tuesdays, but this had been a good one. Izzy had come over the night before, and Thomas had spent the day floating on a cloud. The memory of her, the taste of her, the way she’d looked at him just before leaving—it was a film loop he couldn’t stop playing in his head. He’d even managed a productive workday, the code flowing from his fingers with an uncharacteristic lack of friction.
He closed his laptop with a definitive click, the screen going dark. The silence of the apartment felt earned, comfortable. For the first time in weeks, he thought about calling Devin, a friend he’d been passively neglecting. He should probably tell someone about this, about her. Make it feel real in the outside world.
He heard a knock at the door.
A jolt, swift and electric. Izzy. It had to be. She had a key to her own place, not his, but she’d just appear sometimes, a smirk already forming as he opened the door. He ran a hand through his curls, trying to smooth them, a stupid grin breaking out on his face as he crossed the room.
He pulled the door open, the greeting "Hey, you" already half-formed on his lips.
It died there.
The woman standing in the hallway wasn't Izzy. She was shorter, for one thing, with a cascade of honey-blonde hair and wide, curious blue eyes. She wore a crisp, expensive-looking trench coat belted tightly at her waist, and she was smiling at him with a kind of open, playful energy that felt entirely foreign.
"Hi," she said, her voice bright and melodic. "You must be Thomas."
He just stared, his brain struggling to catch up. "Uh. Yeah?"
"Chloe," she said, as if that explained everything. When he didn't respond, her smile widened. "Chloe Davies? Izzy Rossi’s friend?" She tilted her head, a blonde wave falling over her shoulder. "She said I should stop by."
The words landed with a quiet, seismic shift. Izzy Rossi’s friend. She said I should stop by. The note on his nightstand flashed in his mind. I’m going to be telling my circle about you.
This was the circle.
A cold can of soda from the grocery store was still sweating in his hand. He felt the condensation drip onto his fingers.
"Oh," he managed, his voice rough. He cleared his throat. "Right. Okay."
Chloe’s gaze was frank, appraising. She looked him up and down, not with judgment, but with a keen interest that made the skin on his arms prickle. She was taking him in—the old band t-shirt, the jeans, the bare feet, the probable look of utter shock on his face.
"Can I come in?" she asked, still smiling. It wasn't pushy. It was… an invitation.
Thomas’s heart was a frantic drum against his ribs. His eyes flickered over her shoulder, down the empty hall, half-expecting Izzy to be there, watching, orchestrating this. There was only the muted hum of the building and the faint, ever-present scent of fresh paint.
He looked back at Chloe. Her eyes were waiting.
"Yeah," he said, stepping back. The word felt like it came from someone else. "Sure. Come in."
He moved aside, and Chloe Davies stepped past him into his apartment, her perfume—something sweet and light, like vanilla and pear—cutting through the familiar air of his home. She unbuttoned her trench coat, shrugging it off to reveal a simple silk dress underneath as she looked around the room, at the stacked boxes and the dim lighting.
"Cozy," she said, turning back to face him. Her eyes locked with his, playful and utterly sure of herself. "So. Izzy told me you were something special."
Thomas stood there, the door still open behind him, the cold from the soda can seeping into his palm. The world had just tilted on its axis, and he had no choice but to hold on and see where it spun.
He finally remembered to close the door, the click of the latch sounding unnaturally loud in the quiet room. Chloe was already exploring the periphery of his space, her fingers trailing over the top of a stacked box, her gaze taking in the titles of his books.
"Sorry," he muttered, his brain scrambling for protocol. "It's, uh, not much. But can I get you something to drink?" He gestured vaguely toward the kitchen. "I don't have a lot, but I did buy a few bottles of wine a few days earlier."
He’d bought them after Izzy’s note, a subconscious preparation for a world that suddenly seemed to require having things to offer.
Chloe turned, her smile bright and immediate. "Wine would be perfect." She followed him into the small kitchen, leaning against the doorframe as he opened the fridge. "So, you're the mysterious Thomas."
He fumbled for a bottle of sauvignon blanc, the cool glass a relief against his warm palm. "I don't feel very mysterious."
"Trust me, you are." Her laugh was a light, bubbling sound. "Izzy doesn't just hand out recommendations. Especially not like this."
He paused, corkscrew in hand, and looked at her. "What exactly did she recommend?"
Chloe’s eyes sparkled with mischief. "She said you were a surprisingly good listener." She watched him struggle with the cork for a moment. "And that you have very clever hands."
The cork came out with a soft, satisfying pop. Thomas felt a flush creep up his neck, the memory of Izzy’s note—unforgettable—echoing in the space between them. He poured two generous glasses, his movements careful, deliberate.
He handed her a glass, their fingers brushing briefly. "She talks about me?"
"Let's just say she piqued my curiosity." Chloe took a sip, her eyes closing for a second. "Mmm, that's good." She opened them again, her gaze direct and unflinching. "So. Tell me, Thomas. Is it all true?"
The question hung in the air between them, sharp and direct. It was a test, and he knew it. The cool weight of the wine glass in his hand, the sweet scent of her perfume, the intense focus of her blue eyes—it all coalesced into a single, pressing moment.
He could feel the old version of himself scrambling, wanting to deflect, to make a joke, to deny anything special existed. But the memory of Izzy’s note, the phantom sensation of her approval, was louder.
He looked at Chloe, at the playful challenge in her expression, and took a slow breath.
Thomas wasn't sure how to respond, but to his own surprise he tells that yes, it's all true.
"Yeah," he said, his voice lower and steadier than he expected. "It is."
Chloe’s smile widened into a brilliant, unguarded grin, her entire face lighting up with a giddy thrill. "I knew it," she whispered, almost to herself, before taking a deliberate sip of her wine. She turned and walked toward his sofa, the silk of her dress whispering against her legs. She sat down, smoothing the fabric beneath her, and patted the cushion beside her in a clear, inviting motion.
He joined her, the old sofa frame dipping under his weight, closing the distance between them. The air felt thick, charged with a new kind of potential.
"So," she began, leaning forward to place her glass on the coffee table with a soft click. "Izzy said you do something with computers? Coding?" Her tone was politely interested, but her eyes, sharp and blue, were already scanning his face for something else, something more.
"Yeah, I'm a developer. Mostly backend systems," he said, the answer feeling rote and utterly insignificant in the moment.
But before he could elaborate, Chloe’s focus shifted entirely. "That sounds complicated," she said, waving a dismissive hand. "But honestly, I'm way more interested in what she told me about you here." She tapped a perfectly manicured finger against her own temple, then let her gaze drift meaningfully down his body. "And, well, elsewhere."
Thomas felt a jolt, a direct current connecting her words to the memory of Izzy’s note about his hands. The two women were speaking in a secret language, and he was the subject.
"She said you have this… intensity," Chloe continued, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial murmur. "That it's all coiled up inside you until it's not." She leaned in closer, the sweet scent of her perfume enveloping him. "She said you’re a quick study. And that you watch everything. Like you're memorizing."
He could only stare, his mouth slightly dry. It was a dissection, being laid bare by a stranger with information he never knew had been shared.
It was a dissection, being laid bare by a stranger with information he never knew had been shared. A part of him recoiled, a hot flicker of violation at the intimacy Izzy had so casually given away. But the larger part was mesmerized by Chloe’s directness, by the way she recited these intimacies not as gossip but as coveted facts.
“She told you that?” he finally managed, his voice thin.
“Every word.” Chloe’s smile was conspiratorial. “She said you’re refreshing. Not like other guys who talk a big game.” She leaned back, studying him with a newfound seriousness. “So? Am I making you uncomfortable?”
He considered the question, the honesty of it catching him off guard. The wine felt crisp on his tongue, a grounding sensation. “A little,” he admitted. “It’s just… new.”
“Good.” She seemed pleased with his answer. “New is better than boring. Izzy is never boring.” She took another sip, her eyes sparkling over the rim of the glass. “And neither, apparently, are you.”
He watched her, this confident woman who had appeared like an apparition from a world he’d only just learned existed. Her wide-eyed intensity wasn’t predatory; it was inquisitive, hungry for an experience she believed he could provide. The flattery of it was a potent drug, slowly dissolving his unease.
“So what happens now?” he asked, setting his glass down. The question hung between them, a surrendering of control that felt both terrifying and exhilarating.
Chloe mirrored his action, placing her wine on a coaster with precise intent. “That’s up to you,” she said softly, her playful tone replaced by something quieter, more focused. “Izzy opened the door. I walked through it.”
She shifted on the couch, turning her body fully towards him. The movement was fluid, deliberate. The dim light from the floor lamp caught the gold threads in her silk dress.
“But I’m not here because of her,” she continued, her voice barely above a whisper. “Not really. I’m here because I wanted to see if what she found was real.”
Thomas felt the distance between them diminish, not from any movement he made, but from the sheer force of her attention. He could see the faint dusting of freckles across her nose, the subtle pulse at the base of her throat. The chaotic apartment, the stacked boxes, everything receded into a blur.
He thought of the note. Good things for both of us. Was this what Izzy meant?
Chloe’s hand lifted, her fingers hovering near the side of his face without touching. “Can I?” she asked, her gaze dropping to his mouth.
The question was a formality, a courtesy in a situation that felt like it had its own inevitable momentum. He nodded, a single, slow dip of his chin. Her fingertips touched his jawline, a light, exploratory contact that sent a current straight down his spine. Her skin was cool from holding the wine glass.
Her thumb traced the line of his lip. “Izzy was right,” she murmured, more to herself than to him. “You do watch everything.”
Then she kissed him. It wasn't tentative or questioning. It was a claiming, a confident sealing of the unspoken agreement that had been hanging in the air since she’d said Izzy’s name. Her mouth was soft and tasted of sweet wine, and her other hand came up to cradle his face, holding him there.
When she pulled back, inches, her eyes were dark. “So,” she breathed, her lips curving into a smile that was pure promise. “Show me what else she was right about.”
The challenge in her voice was a spark on dry tinder. Thomas felt the shift inside him, a quiet click of alignment. Her kiss had been a statement, but this was a question only he could answer.
He considered how she just kissed him, the way her lips moved against his with a practiced, confident pressure. He remembered the fleeting sense of her tongue nearing his lips but pulling back, a tease that was all the more potent for its restraint. It was a language he was beginning to understand.
He kissed her again, starting with the same energy she had used, a mirror of her own confidence. He felt her initial surprise in the slight stiffening of her shoulders, then her immediate, melting surrender. He kept the pressure firm, matching her, before he slowly began building upon it.
His hands came up to frame her face, his thumbs stroking the delicate skin just below her ears. He took his time, exploring the soft give of her lower lip, learning the rhythm of her breath. This was different from the frantic heat with Izzy; this was a deliberate, deepening exploration.
When he finally allowed his tongue to trace the seam of her lips, it was an invitation, not a demand. Chloe made a small, eager sound in the back of her throat and opened for him without hesitation. The taste of her was all wine and warmth and a thrilling, uncomplicated hunger.
He pulled back just enough to see her face. Her blue eyes were hazy, her lips swollen from his. A slow, dazed smile spread across her features. "Okay," she breathed, her voice shaky. "So Izzy wasn't exaggerating about the hands, or the... focus."
Thomas felt a surge of something potent and new—not just arousal, but a profound sense of capability. He brushed a strand of blonde hair from her cheek. "She talks too much."
"Maybe just enough," Chloe countered, her fingers curling into the fabric of his t-shirt. She tugged him closer, her playfulness returning, now laced with a raw urgency. "Now, are you going to show me, or do I have to write Izzy a thank-you note first?"
A low laugh rumbled in Thomas’s chest, a sound that felt foreign and entirely his own. "No notes," he said, his voice a rough whisper against her lips before he captured them again.
This kiss was different, slower and more deliberate than the first. He poured every ounce of the confidence she and Izzy had somehow unlocked into it, his hands sliding from her face down the column of her neck. He felt the frantic beat of her pulse under his thumb, a wild rhythm matching his own.
He broke the kiss, trailing his mouth along the line of her jaw. She sighed, a soft, yielding sound, her head tilting back to offer him better access. The skin of her throat was impossibly soft, and he breathed in the scent of her, that vanilla and pear now mixed with something warmer, something uniquely her.
He let his hands start to roam over her body, mapping the delicate architecture of her shoulders through the silk, then sliding down the pronounced curve of her spine. He pressed her body against him, eliminating the last inch of space between them. The contact was electric, and through the layers of her dress and his own clothes, he felt the distinct, sharp points of her nipples hardening.
A shudder ran through her. "Thomas," she breathed, her fingers digging into his shoulders.
He lifted a hand from her back and brushed his knuckles deliberately against one taut peak through the silk. The touch was light, almost casual, but the effect was immediate. Chloe yelped, a sharp, surprised sound that dissolved into a throaty moan of pure pleasure. Her entire body arched into the contact, her eyes flying open to meet his, wide and dazed.
A slow, wicked smile spread across his face. "Like that?" he murmured, his voice thick with a possessiveness that startled him.
Chloe could only nod, her breath coming in quick, shallow pants. Her playful composure had shattered, replaced by a raw, unmistakable hunger. She grabbed the front of his t-shirt, her knuckles white. "Again," she demanded, her voice cracking. "Do that again."
He didn’t need to be told twice. His thumb found the same spot, pressing the silk flat against the rigid peak beneath. This time, the sound she made was a choked gasp, her back bowing off the sofa cushions. Her eyes screwed shut, her fingers clutching at his arms like anchors in a storm.
"God," she panted, her voice strangled. "How did you—? They're just… like that."
A slow, understanding smile spread across his face. It wasn't just a reaction; it was a direct line, a switch he’d somehow found. He watched, fascinated, as every flick of his thumb through the fabric sent a visible tremor through her frame. Her composure, so bubbly and assured minutes ago, was utterly gone, replaced by a raw, shivering vulnerability.
He lowered his head, his breath hot through the silk. "Tell me if it's too much."
"It's not," she rushed out, her hips shifting restlessly. "It's not enough."
That was all the permission he needed. He took the stiff peak between his thumb and forefinger, rolling it gently through the delicate material. Chloe cried out, a sharp, unfiltered sound that seemed to startle her. Her eyes flew open, wide and pleading. "Don't stop. Please, don't stop."
He didn't. He learned the rhythm of her, the precise pressure that made her gasp and the lighter touch that made her whimper. He was mapping a new territory, one of taut silk and shuddering breaths, each reaction a silent lesson in the geography of her pleasure. This was what Izzy had sent her for. This discovery. This control.
He bent and closed his mouth over her, silk and all. The damp heat of his breath, the firm pressure of his tongue—it was too much. Her hands flew to his hair, not pushing him away but holding him there, a desperate, grateful anchor. "Thomas," she sobbed, her body trembling on a knife's edge. "Right there. I'm right there."
Her plea hung in the air, a raw and naked thing. He could feel the frantic drum of her heart against his cheek through the silk. He released the pressure of his mouth, pulling the damp fabric away with his teeth just enough to expose the stiff, flushed peak beneath.
He looked up at her face. Her eyes were screwed shut, lips parted in a silent gasp, every muscle in her neck taut with strain. He replaced his mouth with the blunt pressure of his thumb, pressing down firmly on the center of the areola until she jerked against the cushions. He held it there for a three-count, feeling the tremor build in her thighs where they pressed against his side.
Then, as he released the pressure, his thumb and forefinger found the hardened tip, lightly pinching and rolling it.
The effect was instantaneous and absolute. A sharp, guttural cry tore from her throat, a sound completely unlike her earlier bubbly tone. Her back arched violently off the sofa, her hands flying from his hair to claw at the cushions. A series of rapid, helpless shudders wracked her body, her hips lifting and falling in a spasmodic rhythm against the seam of his jeans.
He held the gentle pinch, watching, mesmerized, as her pleasure crested and broke over her. It was like tuning a radio to a perfect, clear frequency he never knew existed. Her breathing hitched, then exploded into a long, shaky exhale as the climax gripped her.
Slowly, the tension bled out of her. Her body went limp, sinking back into the couch, boneless and spent. Her chest rose and fell in deep, ragged breaths. She blinked her eyes open, and they were glazed, unfocused, looking at him as if seeing a ghost or a god.
"Jesus Christ," she whispered, her voice rough and astonished. "What was that?"
He didn't answer. He just watched the aftermath play out across her face, the dazed wonderment. A profound, quiet power settled in his chest, warm and solid. Izzy’s note, the "circle," this entire improbable situation—it crystallized in that moment.
He leaned down and kissed her, softly this time. A seal on what had just happened. When he pulled back, her eyes had cleared somewhat, focusing on him with an intensity that felt entirely new.
"No one's ever..." she started, then shook her head, a slow, disbelieving motion. "Izzy said you were a quick study. She didn't say you were a goddamn prodigy."
A slow smile spread across his face. He gently smoothed the rumpled silk of her dress over her stomach. "There's more," he said, the words not a boast but a simple, confident statement of fact.
