Chapter 2: Slow Ride
The blue light from the television played over her skin, casting shifting shadows in the valleys and curves of her body. Thomas stared, his brain having short-circuited somewhere between the feeling of her weight on his legs and the frank, undeniable reality of her bare chest. It wasn’t like the movies, not really. There was no soft filter, no coy angle. It was just… her. Pale skin, a faint dusting of freckles across her collarbone, the quiet rise and fall of her breath. He realized he’d been holding his own.
The silence stretched, thick and awkward. It was probably only three seconds, but it felt like a minute.
A sly smile touched Izzy’s lips. She leaned forward, her dark hair brushing his cheek, and brought her mouth close to his ear. Her voice was a low, warm hum that vibrated through him. “I know you’re interested, Thomas.” One of her hands, which had been resting on his shoulder, trailed down his chest, over the soft cotton of his t-shirt, and came to rest low on his stomach. Her fingers pressed down, just enough. “I can feel it.”
He flinched, a jolt of pure electricity shooting through him. Heat flooded his face. His sweatpants felt suddenly, unbearably tight.
She pulled back just far enough to see his eyes. Her gaze was sharp, analytical, but her voice was smoke. “It’s okay. We can go as slow as you want.” A pause. Her thumb drew a slow, small circle on his abdomen. “Right up until you beg me not to.”
The words should have been exciting. They were the kind of thing he’d read in the forums he sometimes lingered on late at night. But hearing them aloud, in this room, with this woman who was essentially a stranger, sent a cold drip of panic mixed with a bitter memory into the heat of the moment.
The pity fuck. Sarah from the coffee shop. He’d rehearsed asking her out for a week. She’d said yes with a sighed “okay, sure” that he’d chosen to ignore. The whole date had been a stumbling, silent disaster. At her door, she’d looked at him with something like resignation and said, “Do you want to come in? Get it over with?” He’d lasted about ninety seconds on her floral-print bedspread. She’d never made eye contact.
And then the college party. The blur of cheap vodka, the girl from his poli-sci class who’d pulled him into a vacant dorm room. The next morning, she’d already been gone, a single indentation on the pillow next to his head the only proof it hadn’t been a dream.
This was different. Izzy was looking right at him. She was present. But all he could feel was the ghost of those other times, the echo of his own incompetence. His body was screaming one thing, a primal, Simple, yeah, go! But his mind was a chorus of doubts, a memory reel of every clumsy fumble, every silent judgment.
He shut his eyes. Took a shaky breath.
Izzy went still. The pressure of her hand on his stomach lightened. He felt her weight shift. Then it was gone.
He opened his eyes. She had swung her legs off him and was standing beside the sofa, completely unconcerned with her state of undress. She didn’t reach for her tank top. Instead, she stretched her arms over her head with a casual grace, her body a long, elegant line in the dim room. She looked down at him, not with anger or disappointment, but with a quiet, reassessing curiosity.
“You’re thinking too much,” she stated, her tone matter-of-fact, like she was diagnosing a problem with his Wi-Fi router.
Thomas could only nod, his throat too tight to form words. The heat of embarrassment was now a full-blown burn. He adjusted himself discreetly, pulling the fabric of his sweatpants away from his skin.
Izzy turned away from him and walked over to his bookshelf. She trailed a finger along the spines of his books. Sci-fi, mostly. Some classic horror. A few thick programming manuals.
“Huh. King, Asimov, a ‘JavaScript for Dummies’ that looks untouched.” She pulled out a well-worn copy of ‘Dune’. “This is a good one. The political maneuvering is better than the fight scenes.” She slid it back into place with a precise click.
She moved to the small dining table, which was sadly stacked with the last few unpacked boxes. She peered into one. “Ah, the photo archive.” She lifted out a framed picture. It was him and his parents at his college graduation, all of them squinting in the sun. He looked unbearably young.
“Cute,” she said, but it wasn’t mocking. She set it down carefully and turned to face him, leaning against the table. The faint glow from the streetlamp outside the window silhouetted her. “So. You’re a virgin.”
The word landed like a physical blow. It was so crude, so final.
“I’m not,” he said, the defensiveness sharp in his voice. “I… I've... It’s happened. It just... They weren't greaqt experiences."
He swallowed, the rest of the sentence dying in his throat. "They weren't great experiences."
Izzy’s eyes softened, but it wasn't pity. The sharp, appraising glint was still there, the interest undimmed. She seemed just as interested in sex as when she was straddling his lap, but now she was looking for a different approach. She pushed off from the table and walked back toward the sofa, not to sit on him, but to perch on the armrest, leaning forward with her elbows on her knees.
The glow from the courtyard lights traced the line of her spine. She studied his face, the tension in his jaw, the way he couldn't quite meet her gaze.
"Okay," she said, her voice low and even. "So we erase the whiteboard. Those don't count." She reached out and gently tapped his forehead with one finger. "The problem is all in here. You're trying to perform instead of just... exist."
He let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. The simple touch, devoid of sexual pressure, was somehow more calming than anything else had been.
"Why are you doing all of this?" The question left him in a rush, raw and unpolished. He gestured vaguely at her, at the room, at the whole surreal situation. "You could have anyone. Why are you here, in my messy apartment, trying to... troubleshoot my sex life?"
A slow, genuine smile spread across her face. It wasn't the predatory smirk from before. This was something warmer, more personal. "Because it's interesting," she said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "Most men are a solved equation. They see a pretty woman, they puff out their chest, they go through a predictable set of moves they saw in a movie. It's boring."
She leaned a little closer, her green eyes capturing his. "You're not boring. You're a mystery. A nervous, curly-haired mystery who blushes when he's flustered and has terrible taste in movies but surprisingly good taste in books."
He blinked, completely disarmed. No one had ever called him a mystery before. Awkward, sure. Quiet, definitely.
"I saw you through the window," she continued, her voice dropping conspiratorially. "You were talking to that sad little succulent. You were giving it a pep talk, I think. Who does that?"
"I think it was getting sunburned," he mumbled, feeling another blush creep up his neck.
"See?" she said, her smile widening. "That's what I mean. It's refreshing." She sat down and offered him her hand. Not a demand, but an invitation. "Come on. Let's start over."
He looked at her hand, then at her face. The movie was still playing, forgotten, casting its dramatic blue light. The woman on screen was now screaming.
He took her hand.
Her grip was firm and cool. She didn’t pull him closer, but instead leaned in herself, closing the small distance between them. Her movement was slow, giving him every chance to turn away.
Thomas held his breath as her face neared, her green eyes locked on his. Then her lips touched his, a soft and surprisingly gentle pressure that was nothing like the frantic encounters he remembered. It was a simple capture, warm and dry, and it held him perfectly still.
For a long moment, that was all it was—a quiet, tender connection in the blue-lit room. He could smell the jasmine in her hair and hear the faint, dramatic score from the forgotten movie. Then he felt it: the gentlest, fleeting flick of her tongue against the seam of his lips.
It was a playful gesture, so quick he might have imagined it. A small, unexpected laugh breathed through him, and he smiled against her mouth. Almost on instinct, he flicked his own tongue back, a timid response against her lower lip.
Izzy’s smile widened perceptibly under his. She did it again, a slightly more deliberate swipe that teased his mouth open. He mirrored her, and soon they were engaged in a silent, playful duel of flicking tongues, each touch dissolving his nervousness.
The kiss deepened naturally from there, no longer just a game but a real exploration. His hand, still holding hers, tightened its grip as he leaned into the kiss, the world outside the sofa narrowing to the taste of wine on her tongue and the soft sound of their breathing.
His hand, still holding hers, tightened its grip as he leaned into the kiss, the world outside the sofa narrowing to the taste of wine on her tongue and the soft sound of their breathing. He forgot about the movie, his apartment, his own clumsy history. There was only the warm, pliable softness of her lips and the thrilling, exploratory dance of their tongues. Minutes blurred, measured only in shared breaths and the gradual relaxation of his shoulders, his free hand finally moving to rest tentatively on her bare waist.
Her skin was shockingly smooth and warm under his palm, a live current that steadied him. He felt her fingers loosen their grip on his hand, allowing her own to trail up his arm, over the cotton sleeve of his t-shirt, and into the curls at the nape of his neck. A quiet, approving sound vibrated in her throat, and he found himself mirroring it, a hum of pure sensation.
Then, she broke the kiss, pulling back just far enough that their foreheads still touched. Her green eyes were dark and heavy-lidded, her breath warm on his face. “Okay,” she murmured, her voice rough at the edges. “You are very, very good at that.”
She leaned back further, her gaze searching his, a smile playing on her swollen lips. “If you really don’t have that much experience, you must just be a natural.”
The word “natural” landed differently than “virgin” had. It didn’t feel like a label; it felt like a key turning in a lock deep inside him. The last of the tension, the fear of being judged and found lacking, simply evaporated. He let out a breath that was half-laugh, half-sigh of profound relief.
“No one’s ever said that before,” he admitted, his voice quieter now, more assured. His thumb stroked the delicate skin of her waist.
“Then they were idiots,” Izzy said with a simple, devastating finality. She shifted, turning her body fully toward him on the sofa, one leg tucked beneath her. The movement was fluid and utterly unselfconscious. “Kissing is like a conversation. Most people just shout the same thing over and over.”
“And what was I saying?” Thomas asked, genuinely curious.
“You were listening,” she said, her smile softening. “And then you had some really interesting things to say back.”
He smiled then, a real, unforced smile that made his hazel eyes crinkle at the corners. He saw her notice it, a flicker of appreciation in her gaze. This was new. This was a version of himself he didn’t know could exist outside his own daydreams. The chaotic apartment, the half-unpacked boxes, even the forgotten film—it all seemed to recede, leaving only the intimate space they had created.
“So,” he began, his courage bolstered by her words. His gaze drifted from her eyes, down to her throat, her collarbones, and lower. He didn’t stare awkwardly this time; his look was one of open appreciation. “What’s the next topic of conversation?”
Izzy’s expression turned thoughtful, the marketing executive considering a new campaign. “Well, your shirt seems to be in the way.” She hooked a finger in the collar of his t-shirt, giving it a little tug. “This is a pretty boring opener.”
He didn’t need any more encouragement. In one fluid motion, he grabbed the hem and pulled it over his head, tossing it to join her tank top on the floor. The cool air hit his skin, but he didn’t feel the urge to hide. He watched her eyes as they traveled over his torso, and for the first time, he didn’t feel judged, only seen.
“Better,” she approved, her eyes lingering on his chest. “Much better.” Her hand came up, and her fingertips lightly traced the line from his sternum down to his navel. He shivered, but held her gaze.
“My turn to ask a question,” Thomas said, his newfound confidence giving the words weight. “Why does a woman who ‘could have anyone’ find a nervous guy with a sunburned succulent refreshing?”
Her playful smirk returned, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes this time. There was a shadow there, something briefly unguarded. “Because ‘anyone’ usually comes with a script,” she said, her voice losing its teasing edge for a moment. “Like I said before, they see the presentation and go through the motions. They don’t see the person.”
She paused, her fingers stilling on his skin. “And you see people, Thomas. I watched you. You notice things.”
The way she said it—so matter-of-fact, so certain—unlocked another piece of him. He wasn’t just being tolerated for a night; he was being chosen for a reason he hadn’t understood until now. It wasn't about his inexperience. It was about his attention.
He reached out, not with the frantic energy of before, but with a deliberate slowness that mirrored her own. He didn’t grab or grope. He simply laid his palm flat against the warm skin between her shoulder blades. He could feel the fine, sturdy architecture of her spine.
“So this is your project?” he asked, the question gentle, without the bite of his earlier defensiveness. He was genuinely asking.
Izzy looked at him, her green eyes clear and direct. “No,” she said, her voice firm. “This is my recess.”
Her hand slid from his chest to his hand, her fingers gently lacing with his. She guided his palm, turning it upwards, and then pressed it firmly against her own sternum. The warmth of her skin seeped into his. She held it there for a long moment, her green eyes locked with his, a silent question in their depths.
Then, with deliberate slowness, she guided his hand lower, over the gentle swell of her breast. His breath hitched. Her skin was impossibly soft, a stark contrast to the firm curve beneath. His fingers trembled slightly against her.
“See?” she whispered, her voice husky. “No script.”
He nodded, his throat too tight for words. His hand, now under its own volition, began to move. He traced the outer curve, learning its shape, his touch initially tentative. He cupped its weight, his palm conforming to her. His thumb, almost of its own accord, swept inward and brushed lightly across her nipple.
Izzy’s breath caught. It was a sharp, quiet intake of air that was louder than any gasp. Her eyes fluttered closed for a second.
He did it again, a little more confidently this time, a slow, deliberate pass of his thumb over the taut peak.
A shiver ran through her. “Yeah,” she breathed, her earlier playfulness evaporating into something raw. “Just like that.”
Emboldened, he brought his other hand up, mirroring the motion on her other breast. He watched her face, utterly captivated. Her lips parted, her head tilting back just a fraction. The helpful teacher was gone, replaced by a woman lost in sensation. This was no longer a lesson. It was a discovery.
He focused on that specific touch, the light, circling friction of his thumbs. Her hips shifted against the sofa cushions, a restless, unconscious movement. A soft, pleading sound escaped her throat, a world away from her earlier confident purrs.
“Thomas,” she murmured, her voice thick. Her hands came up, not to guide him, but to clutch at his shoulders. Her nails dug lightly into the skin of his chest.
He understood then. He was done following. The nervous energy that had paralyzed him earlier had been transmuted, forged into a focused intensity. He saw the need in her half-lidded eyes, in the rapid pulse at the base of her throat. She had shown him the ropes, and now he was ready to climb.
He leaned forward, his mouth finding hers again, but this kiss was different. It wasn’t playful or exploratory. It was deep and claiming. One hand slid from her breast into her hair, tangling in the dark silk, while the other rested on her hip, pulling her closer. The forgotten movie provided a final, dramatic chord from its soundtrack, then the screen went black, plunging the room into the soft, intimate glow of the distant streetlamp.
The sudden silence was profound, broken only by the frantic thumping of his own heart. In the dim, amber light, Izzy’s face was a landscape of shadows and subtle shifts in expression. Thomas didn’t break their gaze, his hands still cupping her waist.
A new certainty, fierce and primal, surged through him. He tightened his grip on her hips and pulled.
She came forward with a small, surprised gasp, her body settling neatly into his lap, her legs straddling his. The thin fabric of her shorts and his sweatpants was a negligible barrier. She immediately began to wiggle, a slow, deliberate grinding motion against the hard bulge she felt there. "Oh," she breathed out, the sound rich with approval.
As their mouths found each other again in a deep, searching kiss, his hands slid from her waist, roaming down the pronounced curve of her back. His palms met the firm, rounded swell of her ass, and he squeezed, his fingers sinking into the muscle.
A low moan vibrated from her throat into his. She released his shoulders, her own hands gripping his, not to stop him but to guide them. She moved his hands around her hips, sliding them over the soft skin of her lower belly until his fingertips brushed the cold metal button of her shorts. He understood.
With a deft flick of his thumbs, he unfastened the button. The zipper hissed down.
Izzy rose up on her knees, just enough to create space. Thomas hooked his fingers into the waistband, and she helped, shifting her weight, as he slid the shorts down the smooth length of her legs. The delicate lace of a tiny black thong stood in stark contrast against her skin. She reached down, effortlessly removing her shoes and kicking the shorts the rest of the way off.
She settled back into his lap, the lace and his sweatpants now the only fabric between her heat and his straining erection. She wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face in the crook of his shoulder for a moment. Then her lips were at his ear, her whisper a hot, promising rush. "It's going to be a fun night."
