Chapter 1: The Gift of Fertility

The conservatory was too warm. Golden afternoon light fell in thick, heavy shafts through the glass panes, catching in the lazy swirl of dust motes above the ferns. Catriona watched one land on the rim of Jenny’s wine glass. Her friend hadn’t taken a sip in five minutes. She was just holding it, white-knuckled, staring at the worn pattern on the sofa cushion between them.

“Say something,” Catriona said softly. Her own voice sounded strange in the humid, green-scented air.

Jenny’s throat worked. She set the glass down on the rustic wooden table with a click that seemed too loud. “You’re serious.”

“Deadly.”

“You’re offering me… Aidan.”

“I’m offering you a chance,” Catriona corrected, leaning forward. The old leather of the sofa creaked under her. She could see the pulse hammering in the delicate hollow of Jenny’s throat. “Three years of clinics, Jens. The injections, the calendars, the hope… and then the nothing. Mark’s test results. It’s not going to happen the conventional way. Not for you two.”

Jenny flinched at Mark’s name. Her husband’s quiet, devastated acceptance had been almost worse than the initial news. “I know that. I just… I never thought… from you.”

“Who else?” Catriona spread her hands, her auburn curls catching the light like embers. “I love you. You’re my sister in every way that counts. And I have a perfectly healthy, incredibly willing husband who adores you.”

A faint, wry smile touched Jenny’s lips. “He does not adore me.”

“He thinks you’re wonderful. And he wants to help.” Catriona reached out, covering Jenny’s cold hand with her own. “This isn’t some clinical donation in a cup, Jen. We’ve talked about this. For it to… take, for it to feel real for you, it should be… real. Aidan comes to you. He stays with you, for a cycle. However long it takes. He’ll fill you, properly, until you’re dripping with him. Until it takes.”

The blunt, physical words hung in the air, stark and undeniable. Catriona watched them land, watched the shift in Jenny’s hazel eyes. The sadness didn’t leave, but it was joined by something else—a slow, deep flicker of heat. Jenny’s thighs pressed together under her simple cotton dress. A flush spread from her chest, up her neck, to her freckled cheeks.

“You’d really be okay with that?” Jenny whispered. “Watching him… be with me?”

Catriona leaned back, considering. It wasn’t jealousy she felt. It was a curious, low pull in her own belly. A vivid, undeniable image of Aidan—her steady, solid Aidan—moving over Jenny’s slighter, frailer form. The contrast. The sheer, intimate generosity of it. “Yes,” she said, and found she meant it. “I want to see it. I want to know you’re getting everything you need.”

The back door to the conservatory clicked open. Both women turned.

Aidan stood there, backlit by the hallway light, a giant outlined in the frame. He’d clearly been listening, waiting for his cue. His dark eyes found Catriona’s first—a silent question. She gave him a small, steady nod. Then his gaze went to Jenny.

“Hey, Jen,” he said, his voice a gentle rumble.

Jenny made a small, choked sound. Her eyes drank him in—the breadth of his shoulders under a plain grey t-shirt, the strength in his hands, the quiet, capable solidity of him. The logical, medical part of her brain supplied the facts: ideal genetic compatibility, proven fertility, robust health. The woman in her, starved and yearning, thought only of weight. Of being covered, pinned, filled by that solidity.

“Hi,” she managed, barely a breath.

He walked in, the space somehow shrinking around him. He didn’t sit. He came to stand before her, looking down. “Cat’s explained it?”

Jenny nodded, unable to speak.

“And you’re sure?” he asked. There was no pressure in his tone, only infinite patience.

“I’m terrified,” she confessed, her voice cracking.

“That’s okay.” He knelt then, in a fluid motion that brought him to her eye level. He was still bigger, even on his knees. He took her hand from Catriona’s grasp. His thumb stroked over her knuckles. “We go slow. We stop anytime. This is for you, Jenny. All of it.”

She looked from his earnest, handsome face to Catriona’s encouraging, fierce one. The love in the room was a tangible thing, thick as the humid air. It didn’t feel sordid. It felt sacred. A strange, pagan rite in this sun-drenched glass chapel.

Her other hand came up, trembling, and touched his cheek. The stubble was rough against her palm. Real. This was real.

“Yes,” she whispered. “Please.”

Aidan’s eyes closed for a second, as if in relief, or prayer. When they opened, they held a new, soft intensity. He stood, drawing her up with him. She felt dizzy, lightheaded.

Catriona rose too, but didn’t approach. She settled back against the edge of the heavy table, a witness.

“How do you want me?” Jenny asked, the question stumbling out, painfully naïve.

Aidan smoothed a strand of honey-blonde hair from her forehead. “However you’re comfortable. Just let me look after you.”

He led her the few steps to the sofa. The cushions sighed as they sat. He turned her, gently, so her back was to his chest, his legs framing hers. He nuzzled into the space between her neck and shoulder, inhaling. His arms came around her waist, holding her loosely, letting her feel the heat and strength of him without confinement.

“Okay?” he murmured against her skin.

A shiver ran through her. “Okay.”

Catriona watched, her own breath coming slow and deep. She saw the exact moment Jenny melted back into him, her head finding a resting place in the curve of his neck. She saw Aidan’s hands, so large and capable, slide up from her waist to cradle her ribcage, his thumbs brushing the undersides of her breasts through the cotton.

He began to move, a subtle rock of his hips against the swell of her backside. A low, broken sound escaped Jenny’s lips. One of his hands drifted down, over the plane of her stomach, down to the hem of her dress. He gathered the fabric slowly, bunching it in his fist, revealing her thighs inch by inch. The skin was pale, soft.

Jenny’s hand came down to clutch at his wrist, not to stop him, but to hold on. To anchor herself as the world narrowed to this point of contact, this slow, deliberate revelation.

Aidan’s fingers traced the crease where her thigh met her body. He found the lace edge of her panties. He hooked a finger under it.

“Catriona,” Jenny breathed, her eyes flying open, seeking her friend’s.

Catriona held her gaze. “I’m here, sweetheart. It’s alright. Let him.”

The permission, from both of them, shattered her last reserve. Her grip on his wrist went slack. Aidan peeled the lace down, just enough. His touch was blunt, warm, seeking. He found her wet, already slick and ready. A groan vibrated through his chest and into her back.

“So perfect for it, Jenny,” he whispered, his voice rough now. “So ready to take it.”

He worked a finger into her, deep and slow. Her head fell back against him, a cry tearing from her throat. It was not Mark’s careful, clinical touch. This was different. Possessive. Purposeful. Every push was a promise of more, of fullness, of a deep, claiming deposit.

Aidan added a second finger, stretching her. His other hand moved up, cupping her breast fully now, his thumb circling her nipple through the dress until it beaded into a hard, aching point. He was everywhere, surrounding her, and the dual sensation—the filling below, the plucking above—drove coherence from her mind. She was just sensation, and need, and a gratitude so profound it felt like grief.

Catriona watched, a hand pressed to her own stomach. She saw the dazed rapture on Jenny’s face, the focused intensity on Aidan’s. She saw the dark, wet patch growing on the front of his jeans where he rocked against Jenny. The musk of arousal now mixed with the scent of soil and greenery.

“Please,” Jenny was begging now, a raw, continuous whisper. “Aidan, please, I need…”

He understood. He withdrew his fingers, shiny with her. He shifted her forward, just off his lap, and stood. The sound of his belt buckle clinking was deafening. He pushed his jeans and boxers down in one efficient motion.

Jenny turned on the sofa to look, and her mouth went slack.

Catriona, from her angle, saw it too. She’d known, of course, but seeing it now, in this context—thick, heavily veined, ruddy and erect—was different. It was a tool. A beautiful, brutal instrument of their shared intention.

Jenny made a sound of pure, wanton hunger. Without being asked, she slid off the sofa to her knees on the woven rug. Her hands came up to cradle him, her touch reverent. She leaned forward and took him into her mouth.

Aidan’s head tipped back, a sharp hiss escaping his teeth. One hand came to rest gently on the back of her messy bun. “Oh, god… Jen.”

Catriona bit her own lip, the tension coiling tight within her. She watched Jenny work, saw the strain in her jaw, the tears of effort or emotion glistening in her lashes. She was worshipping it. Taking all she could, which wasn't nearly enough.

After a minute, Aidan gently pulled her off. “Not like that, sweetheart,” he said, his voice choked. “The goal isn’t my pleasure. It’s yours. It’s getting you ready.”

He lifted her as if she weighed nothing, laying her back onto the soft, worn cushions of the sofa. He pushed her dress up to her waist, removed her panties completely, and nudged her thighs apart with his knees. He leaned over her, bracing himself on one arm, his other hand guiding himself to her entrance.

He looked down at her, her face flushed, her eyes wide and dark. He looked over at Catriona, who gave a final, firm nod.

Then he pushed in.

It was a slow, inexorable invasion. Jenny’s back arched off the sofa, her mouth a silent ‘O’. He was so much, stretching her to a breathtaking brink. He seated himself fully, letting her absorb the shock of the full, thick weight of him buried inside her. The feeling of being packed, utterly occupied, stolen her breath.

“Okay?” he gritted out, the strain of holding still evident in the corded muscles of his neck.

Jenny could only nod, her hands scrabbling at his shoulders. When he began to move, it was a deep, rolling rhythm, each withdrawal almost complete, each thrust a deliberate, profound repenetration. The sofa springs complained softly with their rhythm.

Catriona watched, mesmerized, as her husband moved inside her best friend. She saw the moment Jenny’s shyness burnt away in the furnace of physical feeling. Her legs came up to hook around Aidan’s back, pulling him deeper. Her whimpers became full-throated moans.

Aidan’s pace increased, becoming more urgent, his hips driving with a potent, biological purpose. One of his hands slid under Jenny’s hip, tilting her to receive him even deeper. The other fumbled between them, his thumb finding her clit.

That was all it took. Jenny came with a shattered cry, her body clamping around him in rhythmic, milking pulses. Aidan groaned, a deep, guttural sound of release, and followed her over, driving into her one last, crushing time before shuddering to a stop. He collapsed onto her, careful to keep his weight on his forearms, his face buried in her hair.

For a long moment, the only sounds were their ragged breaths and the distant whisper of the vines against the glass.

Slowly, Aidan softened and slipped from her body. He stayed close, brushing his lips over her temple. Jenny’s eyes were closed, tears tracing clean paths through the light dusting of freckles on her cheeks. But she was smiling, a small, stunned, utterly satiated smile.

Catriona finally moved. She fetched a soft cotton throw from a nearby chair and came over. Aidan shifted, pulling himself together, and Catriona draped the blanket over Jenny’s exposed lower body. She tucked it around her, then bent and kissed her sweaty forehead.

“You did so good,” Catriona whispered.

Jenny opened her eyes, the hazel now soft and drowsy. “Thank you,” she mouthed, the words having no sound.

Aidan stood, fastening his jeans. He shared a long, complex look with his wife—there was love there, and a shared resolve, and the ember of a newly-lit heat. He then looked down at Jenny, a possessiveness in his gaze that hadn’t been there before. “I’ll be back tomorrow evening,” he said, his voice quiet but firm. “We’ll do it again.”

Jenny just nodded, her hand drifting to rest on her lower abdomen, as if she could already feel the potential, the secret now planted deep within her.

Catriona took Aidan’s hand, lacing her fingers with his. They left Jenny to doze in the golden, green-light peace of the conservatory, the deed done, the long wait now begun.
