Chapter 5: The Unexpected Guest
The silence after the phone call with Jenny had solidified in Catriona’s living room, becoming a tangible thing she moved through for two days. She tried to read, tried to clean, tried to lose herself in the mundane. But every mundane thing—the weight of a coffee mug, the slant of afternoon sun on the floor—felt charged, like the world was holding its breath.
She didn’t call Aidan to discuss watching. The conversation felt too large for the phone, too dangerous. Instead, on the third evening, she found herself driving across town, her hands tight on the steering wheel. She didn’t have a plan. She just had the humming, insistent need to see.
Jenny’s house was dark except for a soft, butter-yellow glow from the upstairs bedroom window. Catriona stood on the porch, the night air cool on her cheeks, and knocked. The wait felt eternal.
The door opened. Jenny stood there, backlit by the hall light, wrapped in a robe of pale grey silk so thin it was almost a vapour. It clung to the slope of her breasts, the curve of her hips. Her honey-blonde hair was damp at the ends.
“Cat.” Jenny’s eyes widened, her hand fluttering to the robe’s tie. “I wasn’t… I didn’t expect…”
“I know.” Catriona’s voice was hoarse. “Can I come in?”
Inside, the house smelled of bath salts and nervous anticipation. They ended up in the kitchen, the same kitchen Jenny had described. Catriona’s eyes went to the counter. She could see it. She really could.
“He’s coming tonight,” Jenny said quietly, pouring two glasses of water she didn’t touch. “In about an hour. He texted. Said it’s the right time.” She looked at Catriona, her hazel eyes huge. “Is that why you’re here?”
Catriona nodded, the motion stiff. “I want to be here. When he comes.”
“Just… to watch?”
“Yes.” The word was absolute. Then, softer, “Is that okay?”
Jenny’s throat worked as she swallowed. “It’s your husband. It’s your… arrangement. I’m just the…” She trailed off, unable to finish.
“You’re not just anything,” Catriona said, crossing the space between them. She took Jenny’s hand. It was cold. “You’re my best friend. This is… this is for you. I just need to understand it. All of it.”
The sound of a key in the front door lock made them both freeze. They hadn’t heard a car.
Aidan’s figure filled the hallway, shoulders blocking the light. He shrugged off his coat, his movements efficient, familiar. When he stepped into the kitchen light, his green eyes found Catriona first. He stopped dead.
A beat of silence, thick and electric.
“Cat.” His voice was low, a rumble. He looked from her to Jenny, in her sheer robe, and back. Understanding dawned on his face, not as surprise, but as a deep, settling recognition. “Okay.”
“Okay?” Catriona echoed, her heart hammering against her ribs.
“You’re here to observe.” He said it like a scientist stating a fact. He came further into the room, the space suddenly feeling smaller, warmer. He smelled like cold air and himself. His gaze was appraising, stripping away pretense. “Then let’s go upstairs.”
He didn’t wait for agreement. He turned and walked towards the staircase, his footsteps sure on the treads. Jenny exhaled shakily and followed, her thin robe whispering around her legs. Catriona brought up the rear, her limbs feeling disconnected from her body.
Jenny’s bedroom was exactly as she’d imagined: a soft cave of velvet and shadow. Candles flickered on the dresser, their light dancing over the rumpled silk of the four-poster bed. The lavender scent was stronger here, undercut by that faint, intimate musk.
Aidan stood at the foot of the bed. He looked at Jenny. “Are you ready?”
She nodded, mute.
“Then get on the bed. On your back.”
His tone wasn’t cruel. It was directive, leaving no room for doubt. Jenny obeyed, climbing onto the silken covers. The grey robe fell open, revealing the pale, slim lines of her body, the soft swell of her stomach, the thatch of darker blonde at the junction of her thighs. She was breathtakingly vulnerable.
Aidan then looked at Catriona. He pointed to a high-backed velvet chair in the corner, angled towards the bed. “Sit there.”
She went to the chair, her knees weak, and sat. The velvet was cool through her jeans. She felt like a spectator in a theatre of her own design.
Aidan didn’t undress with ceremony. He pulled his sweater over his head, then his t-shirt. His chest was broad, dusted with dark hair. He unbuckled his belt, the leather sliding free with a hiss, and pushed his jeans and boxers down in one motion.
Catriona’s breath caught.
She had seen him, of course. A thousand times. But she was seeing him now through Jenny’s eyes, in this context. The sheer, heavy reality of him. He was fully, intimidatingly erect, his size not just a fact but a dominant presence in the dim room. Jenny’s eyes were fixed on him, wide with a mixture of awe and apprehension.
He knelt on the bed, the mattress dipping under his weight. He didn’t kiss her. He didn’t speak sweet words. He placed a broad hand on the inside of her thigh, pushing her legs wider. His touch was clinical, but the possessiveness in the gesture made a hot coil tighten in Catriona’s belly.
“Look at her, Catriona,” Aidan said, his voice a low command. “Watch how she takes me.”
He positioned himself, not rushing. He used his fingers first, and Jenny arched off the bed with a sharp gasp, her head tipping back. She was ready, slick, but the stretch was still immense. Aidan watched her face, his own a mask of intense concentration.
Then he pressed forward.
Jenny’s cry was choked, a sound of pure sensation. Her hands fisted in the sheets. Catriona leaned forward in her chair, unable to blink, her own body clenching in sympathetic rhythm. She saw the incredible, slow progression as he filled her friend, saw the flutter of Jenny’s abdomen, heard the wet, impossible sound of it.
Aidan began to move, a deep, rolling rhythm that had nothing to do with pleasure and everything to do with purpose. Each thrust was measured, devastatingly complete. Jenny’s sounds changed from shock to a low, continuous moan. Her legs came up to wrap around his back, her heels digging into his thighs. She was surrendering, not just to him, but to the raw, biological truth of the act.
Catriona’s hand had drifted to her own lap. She pressed the heel of her palm hard against the denim seam, a jolt of sharp, private sensation. She was soaking through her jeans. The sight was the most obscenely beautiful thing she’d ever witnessed: her husband’s powerful back working, Jenny’s delicate body yielding beneath him, the utterly focused silence broken only by skin, by breath, by liquid friction.
“Is this what you wanted to see?” Aidan grunted, not breaking his pace. His eyes found Catriona’s in the candlelight. They were dark, wild, a stranger’s eyes.
“Yes,” she breathed, the word a confession.
He drove into Jenny once, twice more, a final, profound surge, and held himself there, deep. A ragged groan was torn from his throat. Jenny whined beneath him, her body bowing, accepting. Catriona could see the tension in his hips, the pulse of his release inside her friend.
For a long moment, there was only the sound of ragged breathing. Aidan stayed lodged within her, his head bowed. Then, slowly, he pulled out.
Jenmy whimpered at the loss. And there, in the candlelight, Catriona saw it—a slow, creamy trickle escaping onto the dark silk between Jenny’s thighs. The evidence. The potential.
Aidan turned on the bed. He was still violently hard, gleaming. His gaze locked on Catriona with a ferocity that pinned her to the chair.
“Your turn,” he said.
It wasn’t a question. It was gravity.
He crossed the room in two strides. He pulled her up from the chair by her wrists. His hands went to the button of her jeans, popped it, yanked them and her underwear down her hips. He turned her, bending her over the velvet arm of the chair, her back to the bed, to Jenny.
She heard Jenny’s soft, shocked inhale from the bed. She was exposed, presented. The cool air hit her skin, then the blistering heat of him, notched at her entrance. He was slick from Jenny.
“Watch her, Jenny,” Aidan commanded, his voice raw at Catriona’s ear. “Watch me fill your best friend.”
He thrust home.
Catriona cried out, the sound smashed into the velvet. The stretch was familiar, yet utterly new. It was accompanied by the searing knowledge that Jenny was watching, that she was seeing Aidan disappear into her. The shame was incendiary. It burned away everything but feeling.
He fucked her with the same purposeful intensity, but it was different. There was a claim in it, a reclamation. One of his hands tangled in her auburn curls, pulling her head back. The other hand slid around her hip, his fingers finding her clit, rubbing rough, exacting circles. Pleasure detonated through her, wave after wave, tied irrevocably to the deep, planting drives of his hips.
She came apart silently, her body clenching around him in vicious pulses. He followed moments later, a final, deep pump, a hot flood that felt like a brand. He collapsed over her, his weight a crushing comfort.
When he pulled out, he turned her, holding her up as her legs trembled. He guided her to the bed, to the space beside Jenny. They lay there, side by side, both breathing raggedly, both marked. Catriona felt the hot leak of him between her own thighs, a mirror to Jenny’s.
Aidan stood above them, looking down at his wife and her best friend, both glistening with his spend. He dressed in silence, his movements slow now, spent. He leaned over and kissed Catriona, deep and tasting of salt, then brushed a kiss over Jenny’s forehead.
“I’ll lock the door behind me,” he said, and left.
The room was quiet, save for the sputter of a candle. Catriona stared at the canopy above. She could feel the warm seepage on her inner thigh. She could hear Jenny’s soft breathing beside her.
After a long while, Jenny’s hand found hers in the space between them. Their fingers, sticky and uncertain, intertwined.
Neither woman spoke. There were no words for the geography they now inhabited. The question Jenny had asked over the phone hung in the air, answered not with a word, but with a shared, dripping silence.
