Chapter 12: The Shared Bed
The silence in the master bedroom was a living thing. It pulsed between them, thick with the ghost of their agreement. Catriona had lit a single candle on the dresser; its flame danced, casting long, shifting shadows across the rumpled silk duvet. The scent of lavender from Jenny’s soap mixed with the warmer, earthier smell of Aidan’s skin and the faint trace of the red wine they’d shared downstairs.
Jenny stood by the foot of the bed, looking at the sheets. She’d changed into the soft cotton shorts and tank top she kept in her gym bag, a flimsy barrier. “I feel like I should have brought a manual,” she said, her voice too bright. “Or a diagram. Something with arrows.”
Catriona, already in her robe, let out a soft laugh. It broke the surface tension. “The only rule is there are no rules. Remember?” She untied her robe, let it slide down her shoulders. The candlelight loved her curves, gilding her freckled skin. She saw Aidan’s eyes darken as he watched from where he leaned against the doorframe, still in his jeans and t-shirt.
“That’s a terrifying rule,” Jenny said, but she was smiling, a real one this time.
“Come here,” Catriona said, not to Aidan, but to Jenny.
Jenny obeyed, stepping into the circle of warm light. Catriona reached for the hem of Jenny’s tank top. “May I?”
A nod. Catriona lifted it slowly, revealing the gentle slope of Jenny’s stomach, the small, soft breasts. She was trembling. Catriona dropped the top to the floor, then hooked her thumbs in the waistband of Jenny’s shorts, easing them down. Jenny stepped out of them, her breath hitching. She was naked, bathed in golden light, her vulnerability absolute.
Aidan moved then. He crossed the room, his boots silent on the rug. He didn’t touch Jenny. He stopped behind Catriona, his hands coming to rest on her bare hips, his forehead dipping to press against her auburn curls. He was holding onto her. Anchoring himself. Catriona felt the hard ridge of him through his jeans, pressed against the small of her back.
“You’re so beautiful,” Catriona whispered to Jenny, her voice husky. “I’ve always thought so.”
Jenny’s eyes filled, but she didn’t look away. “Cat…”
“Shhh.” Catriona closed the distance and kissed her. It was soft at first, a question. Jenny’s lips were hesitant, then they parted, and the kiss deepened. It was different from Aidan’s. Softer, exploratory. Catriona’s hands came up to cradle Jenny’s face, her thumbs stroking her cheekbones. She tasted of wine and hope.
Aidan watched, his grip tightening on Catriona’s hips. The sight of his wife, his fierce, nurturing Catriona, kissing her best friend with such tender hunger, sent a bolt of pure, undiluted heat straight to his core. He’d never seen anything more erotic.
Catriona broke the kiss, her own breathing uneven. She turned her head, looking over her shoulder at Aidan. “Your turn,” she said, her eyes glinting. “But slowly.”
He understood. He let go of her and stepped around. Jenny looked up at him, her hazel eyes wide. He was so much bigger, a solid wall of muscle and intention. He didn’t kiss her. He just looked, his gaze traveling over her with a reverence that made her shiver. Then he knelt. Not in submission, but in focus. He pressed his lips to the hollow of her throat, then lower, to the space between her breasts. A low, ragged sigh escaped her.
“Okay?” he murmured against her skin.
“Yes.”
He stood then, and his hands went to his own clothes. The t-shirt came off, revealing the familiar topography of his chest and shoulders Catriona knew by heart. The jeans followed. And then he was just there, fully aroused, the sheer, daunting size of him making Jenny’s eyes widen further.
“Jesus, Aidan,” she breathed, a strange laugh in her throat. “You really don’t do anything by halves.”
He smirked, a rare, crooked thing. “Astronomy is a science of vast scales.”
Catriona laughed, the sound rich and warm in the quiet room. She took Jenny’s hand. “Come on. The bed’s waiting.”
They moved together, a slow, tangled migration onto the vast expanse of silk. Catriona guided Jenny onto her back, settling beside her, propped on an elbow. She resumed kissing her, a deep, languid exploration, while her hand wandered, stroking Jenny’s arm, her collarbone, then, tentatively, the curve of her breast. Jenny gasped into Catriona’s mouth, her back arching.
Aidan watched for a moment, the image searing itself into his memory. Then he moved behind Catriona, his body fitting against the length of hers. He kissed her shoulder, the nape of her neck, his hands skimming up her sides. He was everywhere, surrounding her. His erection nestled between her thighs from behind, not entering, just resting there, a heavy, hot promise.
Catriona moaned, breaking her kiss with Jenny. The dual sensation was overwhelming—the softness of Jenny under her hands, the hard, demanding pressure of Aidan at her back. “Aidan,” she whispered.
“I’ve got you,” he rasped in her ear. One hand slid around her hip, his fingers finding the slick, swollen heat between her legs. He stroked her, his touch knowing, as his other hand came around to mimic the motion on Jenny. Jenny cried out, a sharp, sweet sound, her hips lifting off the bed.
It was a symphony of touch, a feedback loop of pleasure. Catriona focused on Jenny’s mouth, her breasts, drowning in the feel of her while Aidan’s hands played them both. The room filled with the sounds of ragged breathing, slick friction, soft moans. The candlelight blurred.
“I can’t… I’m going to…” Jenny choked out, her body bowing.
“Let go,” Catriona urged, kissing her fiercely.
Jenny shattered. A raw, helpless cry tore from her throat as her climax rolled through her, waves of it making her tremble uncontrollably. Catriona held her through it, whispering nonsense against her skin, feeling the contractions under her own fingertips.
The sight and feel of Jenny coming undone tipped Catriona over the edge. Her own orgasm crashed into her with silent, stunning force, a white-hot detonation that clenched around Aidan’s fingers and left her gasping, blind.
Aidan felt her climax, felt Jenny’s. The control he’d been clinging to snapped. He withdrew his hand from Catriona, his body moving with a single-minded purpose. He guided himself to her entrance, pressing into the incredible, welcoming heat of her from behind. He thrust, deep and sure, burying himself in his wife as she still trembled from her peak. He set a ruthless, driving rhythm, his hands anchored on her hips, each movement pushing her body against Jenny’s.
Catriona was molten, super-sensitized, every nerve alight. The feel of him filling her so completely, while her skin was pressed against Jenny’s sweaty, spent body, was a paradox of intimacy that unmoored her. She turned her head, found Jenny’s lips again, kissing her with a wild, shared desperation.
Aidan’s pace grew frantic, his breaths loud grunts in the quiet. He was close. So close. With a gut-deep groan, he pulled out of Catriona abruptly. The loss left her cold for a split second.
Then he was over Jenny. He didn’t ask. He didn’t hesitate. He positioned himself and pushed into her in one long, relentless stroke. Jenny’s eyes flew open, a shocked “oh” escaping her as he stretched her, filled her beyond anything she’d known. There was a moment of breathtaking adjustment, then a deep, full ache that bloomed into a piercing pleasure.
“Aidan,” she sobbed, her legs wrapping around his back, pulling him deeper.
He drove into her, each thrust a claiming, a giving. This was the purpose. This was the desperate, biological heart of their impossible pact. He was thorough, methodical, angling his hips until he found the spot that made her see stars. His tenderness was gone, burned away by a feral intensity Catriona had only glimpsed before. He was a force of nature.
Catriona watched, mesmerized. She pushed herself up on one arm, her gaze fixed on the place where their bodies joined, on the shocking, beautiful stretch of her taking him. Jenny’s face was a mask of agonized ecstasy, tears streaming from the corners of her closed eyes. Aidan’s back was a landscape of straining muscle, corded and gleaming in the candlelight.
She saw the exact moment he lost the last of his control. His body locked, a shudder racking him from head to toe. A guttural cry was torn from his chest, raw and unprotected. He pressed into Jenny one final, devastating time and held there, pulsing.
Catriona watched, her heart hammering against her ribs, as he collapsed onto Jenny, then immediately rolled to the side, taking her with him, keeping her filled. He held her close, his face buried in her hair, his big body still shuddering with aftershocks.
Slowly, gently, he withdrew. In the silent, heavy aftermath, Catriona saw it. The evidence of their gamble, their hope, spilling from Jenny onto the dark silk sheet.
Without thought, driven by an impulse deeper than reason, Catriona moved. She bent her head between Jenny’s thighs and slowly, deliberately, licked the mixture of seed and arousal from her.
The taste was complex, musky and salty and profoundly intimate. Aidan’s eyes met hers over Jenny’s body, wide with shock, then with a dawning, awed heat. Jenny just whimpered, a broken, beautiful sound, her hand coming down to tangle in Catriona’s curls.
They stayed like that for a long time, a tangled knot of limbs and spent passion. The candle guttered and went out, leaving them in the deep blue dark. No one spoke. The hum of the house settled around them.
Jenny was the first to break the silence, her voice a rough whisper. “Mark texted. ‘Miss you. Home soon.’”
The real world, with its schedules and lies, rushed back in. Aidan exhaled, a long, weary sound. Catriona lifted her head, resting her cheek on Jenny’s thigh.
“You should go,” Catriona said softly, the words aching in her throat. “You should go home to your husband.”
Jenny nodded in the darkness. She knew it was true. But for a few more minutes, she didn’t move. She lay between them, still feeling the ghost of Aidan inside her, still feeling the wet heat of Catriona’s mouth on her skin, holding onto the fragile, impossible reality of the unit they had become.
