Chapter 3: The Unspoken Promise

The penthouse settled into a silence that felt almost sacred. Cole sat on the leather sofa, his hands folded in his lap, watching the city shift from morning gold to midday blue beyond the windows. He had stopped checking the time after the first hour. There was something meditative about waiting, about letting the weight of what had happened settle into his bones like sediment drifting to the bottom of a still lake.

His phone buzzed on the coffee table. Elena from Legal, again. He ignored it.

His lips still tingled. His skin still remembered the press of Jaxson's hands, the slide of his mouth, the desperate hunger that had poured through the bond—if he could even call it that—like water through a cracked dam. The word mate drifted through his mind, unbidden, and he pushed it away. Too soon. Too much.

But he couldn't stop the small smile that tugged at the corner of his mouth.

The door opened at precisely 11:47 AM.

Jaxson walked in with his jacket slung over one shoulder, his tie loosened, his hair slightly disheveled in a way that made Cole's breath catch. He looked tired. He looked alive. His eyes found Cole immediately, and the tension in his shoulders visibly eased.

"Hey," Jaxson said, the word soft and almost tentative.

"Hey," Cole replied.

Jaxson dropped his jacket on the armchair and crossed the room in three long strides. He didn't sit. He stood in front of Cole, looking down at him with an expression that was equal parts wonder and disbelief, as if he still couldn't quite process that Cole was here, that any of this was real.

I half expected you to be gone. I've been re-running the morning in my head the whole drive back, convincing myself I imagined it. But you're here. You stayed.

"I said I would," Cole said quietly.

Jaxson's eyes widened, just a fraction, before a low laugh escaped him. He ran a hand through his hair, shaking his head. "Right. I keep forgetting. You can—" He gestured vaguely at his temple.

"Hear everything," Cole finished. He stood, closing the distance between them. "It's not exactly a door I can close."

"That sounds exhausting."

"Sometimes." Cole reached out, fingers brushing against Jaxson's forearm. "But right now? I'm kind of grateful for it."

Jaxson's breath hitched. His hand came up, cupping Cole's jaw with a gentleness that seemed almost impossible for a man of his size, his reputation, his carefully constructed armor. He traced his thumb along Cole's cheekbone, feather-light, and his thoughts softened into something vulnerable.

I don't know how to do this. I don't know how to be soft. I've spent so long being hard and cold and untouchable that I'm not sure I remember how to just... feel. But for him? I want to learn.

"You're doing fine," Cole whispered.

Jaxson let out a shaky breath. "Is that you talking, or the thoughts?"

"Both."

The kiss that followed was different from the first. Slower. Deeper. Less about hunger and more about learning—the shape of each other's mouths, the rhythm of each other's breathing, the way their bodies fit together when they weren't pressed against glass and desperation. Cole's hands slid up Jaxson's chest, fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt, anchoring himself.

Jaxson made a low sound against his lips, and Cole felt it vibrate through him, felt the way it stirred something primal in his own chest. The scent of the alpha was everywhere now—sandalwood and musk and something darker, something that made Cole's knees feel weak.

"Bedroom," Jaxson murmured, pulling back just enough to speak. "Now."

It wasn't a question. But it wasn't a command either. It was a plea wrapped in certainty, and Cole answered it by taking his hand.

The bedroom was a different world entirely. Where the living space was all glass and light, this room was shadows and warmth. Deep mahogany panels lined the walls, polished to a soft gleam. The bed dominated the space, vast and inviting, its white sheets crisp and untouched. A single candle flickered on the vanity, casting dancing shapes across the ceiling.

Everything about the room said sanctuary. Cole felt his racing heart slow, just a fraction.

Jaxson stopped in the center of the room, his hands resting on Cole's hips. He was looking at him with an intensity that made Cole's skin prickle with awareness.

"Tell me what you want," Jaxson said, his voice low and rough. "Say it out loud. I need to hear it."

Cole swallowed. His throat felt dry, his pulse thrumming in his ears. Under the weight of that gaze, under the flood of thoughts that were swirling through Jaxson's mind—anxious, desperate, hopeful—he found the words.

"I want you to take me apart," Cole said. "I want to feel you everywhere. I want to be yours."

A tremor ran through Jaxson's body. His thoughts became a roar.

Yours. Mine. Ours. God, the way he says that. Like it's the simplest thing in the world. Like he's not handing me his whole heart wrapped in a ribbon.

Jaxson reached for the buttons of Cole's shirt with trembling fingers. He was an alpha used to control, used to taking what he wanted with confidence and precision, but here he was, undoing each button with agonizing care, as if Cole were something precious, something breakable.

" you okay?" Jaxson asked, pausing with the shirt half open.

Cole laughed, a soft, breathless sound. "I'm more than okay. I'm—" He searched for the word. "I'm here. I'm really here."

Jaxson's smile was small and genuine. He finished the buttons, sliding the shirt from Cole's shoulders, letting it fall to the floor. His eyes traced every inch of exposed skin—the soft curve of Cole's neck, the delicate line of his collarbones, the smooth expanse of his chest.

So beautiful. He doesn't even see it. He thinks he's too soft, too delicate for this world, but he's the strongest person I know. He's been living in my head for weeks and he's still standing.

Cole felt heat creep up his cheeks. "You're doing that thing again."

"What thing?"

"Thinking nice things about me."

Jaxson's hands settled on his waist, thumbs tracing small circles on the sensitive skin above his hipbones. "Should I stop?"

"No." Cole's voice came out smaller than he intended. "Please don't."

Jaxson lowered his head, pressing a kiss to the hollow of Cole's throat. Then another, lower, at the base of his neck. His hands slid around to Cole's back, unhooking his trousers, easing them down over his hips. Cole stepped out of them, standing in just his briefs, feeling exposed and vulnerable and utterly seen.

"There you are," Jaxson breathed. "There you are."

He guided Cole backward until his knees hit the edge of the bed. Cole sank onto the mattress, the sheets cool against his thighs, and looked up at Jaxson standing above him—so tall, so powerful, his dark eyes burning with a fire that Cole could feel in his own chest.

"How do you want me?" Cole asked.

Jaxson's jaw tightened. His hands had stilled at the waistband of his own trousers, and for a moment, he just stood there, drinking Cole in.

I want you facedown. I want to press you into the mattress and take you until you forget your own name. I want you on your back so I can watch your face when you come undone. I want you everywhere. I want you in my bones. I want you so badly it hurts.

"Turn over," Jaxson said, his voice barely above a growl.

Cole's breath caught. He rolled onto his stomach, pillowing his cheek on his folded arms. The position was vulnerable, open. He felt the cool air against his skin, felt the weight of Jaxson's gaze traveling down his spine.

A hand settled on the small of his back, warm and grounding. Then another, curling around his hip, tugging him gently upward. He heard the rustle of fabric, felt the shift of the mattress as Jaxson knelt between his thighs.

"Is this okay?" Jaxson asked, his voice strained.

"Yes." Cole's reply was immediate, without hesitation. "Yes. Please."

The press of Jaxson against him was sheer sensation. Fingers, slick and careful, tracing down his spine, around his hipbone, sliding between his thighs. Cole gasped at the contact, his hips tilting instinctively.

Better than I imagined. Softer. Hotter. He's trembling. He's holding himself still for me. Mine.

"Jaxson," Cole breathed, a plea and a prayer.

The first push was slow, deliberate, stretching him open inch by inch. Cole's hands fisted in the sheets, his breath coming in shallow gasps. The fullness was overwhelming, the feeling of being so completely joined, so utterly claimed. He heard Jaxson's groan, felt it vibrate through his own body.

So good. So perfect. He's perfect. Mine. Mine. Mine.

"Move," Cole whispered. "Please."

Jaxson moved. Long, deep strokes that drew out a whimper from Cole's throat. He set a rhythm, steady and relentless, each thrust pressing him deeper into the mattress. Cole arched into it, meeting him halfway, the friction building a heat that spread from his core to the tips of his fingers.

He turned his head, pressing his face into the pillow, muffling a moan that wanted to be a scream. Jaxson leaned over him, his chest pressed against Cole's back, his lips brushing Cole's ear.

"Let me hear you," he murmured. "Let me hear every sound. I want to know what I do to you."

Cole's walls crumbled. The moan escaped him, raw and unguarded, and Jaxson answered it with a thrust that made his vision white.

Yes. Yes. Like that. Just like that. You're mine now. Mine to touch. Mine to hold. Mine to keep.

Jaxson's hand slid under Cole's hip, gripping him, angling him just slightly. The next thrust hit something that made Cole cry out, his whole body shuddering.

"Right there," he gasped. "Don't stop. Please, don't stop."

Jaxson showed no sign of stopping. His pace quickened, his breathing ragged, his thoughts nothing but a relentless refrain of possession and adoration and desperate, consuming love. Cole clung to the sheets, to the sound of Jaxson's voice, to the feel of his body pressed against his, and let himself be carried away.

You're everything. You're everything I didn't know I needed. You're everything I was afraid to want. I love you. I love you. I love you.

"Jaxson—" Cole's voice broke, caught between a sob and a plea.

"I'm here." Jaxson pressed a kiss to the back of his neck. "I'm here. Let go. Let me see you fall."

Cole let go.

The release crashed over him like a wave, pulling him under, drowning him in sensation. He heard his own cry, muffled by the pillow. He felt Jaxson follow, felt the shudder that ran through the alpha's body, felt the warmth of him as he collapsed against Cole's back, spent and trembling.

For a long moment, neither of them moved. The only sound was their breathing, ragged and harsh in the quiet room. The candle flickered on the vanity, casting dancing shadows across the walls.

Jaxson stirred first, easing himself out with a gentleness that made Cole's chest ache. He rolled onto his side, pulling Cole with him, wrapping his arms around him from behind. His lips pressed against the back of Cole's neck.

"Stay," Jaxson whispered. "Stay tonight. Stay tomorrow. Stay, and let me prove that I can be what you need."

Cole's eyes burned. He turned in Jaxson's arms, facing him, and was struck by the sight of the alpha's face—open and raw and utterly vulnerable.

"I'm not going anywhere," Cole said.

Jaxson's smile was small and fragile. He pressed his forehead to Cole's, their breath mingling.

"I love you," he said out loud. "I know it's fast. I know it's insane. But I love you."

Cole's heart swelled. He reaching up, fingers tracing the line of Jaxson's jaw.

"I know," he whispered. "I heard you. I've always heard you."

Jaxson laughed, a soft, broken sound. "Of course you did."

Cole tilted his head, pressing a kiss to the corner of Jaxson's mouth.

"I love you too," he said. "And I'm not running. Not anymore."
