Chapter 4: The Scent of Destiny

The sheets were still warm when Cole woke to the sensation of being watched.

He opened his eyes slowly, the late afternoon light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows in long, golden shafts. For a moment, he forgot where he was. Then he felt the weight of Jaxson's arm draped across his waist, the warmth of his body pressed along his back, and memory flooded back in a rush of warmth and wonder.

"You're staring at me, aren't you?"

Jaxson's chuckle rumbled against his shoulder blade. "Guilty."

Cole rolled over, facing him. The alpha's hair was mussed, his jaw shadowed with stubble, and there was something soft in his dark eyes that Cole had never seen before. It made his chest ache in the best possible way.

"How long have you been awake?" Cole asked.

"About an hour." Jaxson's fingers traced lazy patterns along Cole's hip. "I've been watching you sleep. It's... not creepy, I promise. It's just—" He paused, searching for the right word. "Peaceful. You look peaceful."

Cole's lips curved. "I am peaceful. For the first time in months, I think."

Jaxson leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead. "Good. That's what I want. I want you to feel safe. I want you to feel—"

He stopped mid-sentence. His eyes widened, and his hand stilled on Cole's hip.

Cole felt it too. A sudden warmth that started low in his belly, spreading outward like heat from a fire catching hold. His skin prickled. His heart rate spiked. And beneath his ribs, something seemed to pulse, deep and demanding.

"Jaxson?" His voice came out breathier than he intended.

Jaxson's jaw tightened. His eyes darkened, shifting from soft to something far more primal in the span of a heartbeat. Cole could feel the change in him—the sudden tension in his muscles, the quickening of his breath.

Your heat. It's your heat. It's starting. God, why now? Why here? I didn't prepare—I didn't think—I can't just—

"Jaxson," Cole repeated, a little more urgently. "What's happening?"

Jaxson's hand came up to cup his face, thumb brushing across his cheekbone. The touch was grounding, but his thoughts were a whirlwind of panic and desire and something that looked an awful lot like awe.

You're my mate. You're actually my mate. I felt the pull from the first moment I saw you, but I thought it was just—I didn't let myself believe—but this—this is the bond. This is fated.

"I can hear you," Cole whispered. "I can hear everything you're thinking right now."

Jaxson let out a shaky laugh. "Then you know. This isn't just—it's not something I planned for. It's not something I even allowed myself to hope for." He paused, his voice dropping. "But it's real. You're real. And you're mine."

The word hit Cole like a physical force.

He could feel the heat surging higher, his body responding to the alpha's words, to his scent, to the intensity of his gaze. His skin felt too tight, his thoughts scattered. He pressed closer to Jaxson, drawn by an instinct he couldn't name.

"Tell me what you need," Jaxson murmured. His hands were already moving, sliding down Cole's back, pressing him closer. "Tell me what your body is asking for."

Cole's breath hitched. "I don't—I've never—" He swallowed, embarrassed. "I've never been through a full heat with anyone. I've always managed it alone. I don't know what I need."

Jaxson's expression softened. He pressed a kiss to Cole's forehead, then his temple, then the corner of his mouth.

"Then I'll figure it out with you," he said. "We'll figure it out together. But Cole—" He pulled back just enough to meet Cole's eyes. "This is important. Once we do this, once I claim you fully, there's no going back. Do you understand that?"

The warmth in Cole's belly flared.

"Yes."

"Say the words out loud."

"I understand." Cole's voice was steady despite the trembling in his limbs. "I understand, and I want it. I want you."

Jaxson made a low sound, something between a groan and a growl, and lowered his mouth to Cole's.

The kiss was different from before. Where earlier there had been tenderness, now there was a burning urgency. Jaxson's hands roamed Cole's body with a hunger that bordered on reverence. Every touch was both a claim and a question, asking permission even as he moved with deliberate intent.

Cole arched into him, heat spiking through his veins like wildfire.

I'll take care of you. I'll make it good. I'll make it perfect. I'll give you everything I have, everything I am, everything I could ever be. Just stay with me. Just stay.

"I'm staying," Cole breathed against his lips. "I'm staying."

Jaxson's laugh was a warm shudder against his skin. He worked his way down Cole's neck, pressing open-mouthed kisses along his collarbone, his chest, the sensitive hollow of his throat. Cole's hands fisted in his hair, tugging, pulling him closer.

The heat was different now. It wasn't just desire—it was a deep, primal need that bypassed thought and went straight to instinct. Cole's body was telling him to submit, to surrender, to give himself over completely.

"Please," he heard himself say. "Jaxson, please."

Jaxson paused, looking up at him with dark, burning eyes.

"Please what, sweetheart?"

Cole's cheeks flushed. "Please claim me. Make me yours. I need—" He broke off, overwhelmed by the intensity of what he was feeling. "I need to be yours."

Something shifted in Jaxson's expression. The last vestiges of his control seemed to slip away, replaced by a fierce, protective hunger.

I was going to be careful. I was going to take my time. But he's asking. He's begging. And I can't deny him. I can't deny him anything.

"Turn around," Jaxson said, his voice low and rough. "I want to see you."

Cole's pulse thundered. He rolled onto his stomach, pressing his face into the pillow. The position felt vulnerable, exposed, but also right. He felt Jaxson's hands on his hips, guiding him, positioning him.

"Ready?" Jaxson asked, his breath warm against Cole's ear.

"Yes." The word came out muffled against the pillow. "Yes."

The first press was slow, almost gentle. Cole felt himself stretching, accommodating, the sensation bordering on overwhelming. Then Jaxson sank deeper, and everything else fell away.

The world narrowed to the sensation of being filled, of being completely possessed. Jaxson's hands gripped his hips, anchoring him. His movements were deep and measured, each thrust sending a wave of pleasure cascading through Cole's body.

That's it. That's it. Let go. I've got you. I've got you.

Cole's hand found Jaxson's, their fingers lacing together. The contact felt grounding, intimate. He squeezed, and Jaxson squeezed back.

"Look at me," Jaxson murmured. "I want to see your eyes when you come."

Cole turned his head, meeting his gaze. The intensity of the eye contact was almost unbearable. Jaxson's thoughts were a steady drumbeat of love and possession, all focused on him, all centered on this moment.

I love you. I love you. I love you.

The words broke something in Cole's chest. He arched, crying out, and Jaxson followed a moment later, his groan lost against Cole's neck.

For a long moment, they lay tangled together, breathing hard, hearts racing. The heat that had consumed Cole began to fade, replaced by a deep, bone-settling contentment.

Jaxson was the first to move. He pulled out slowly, carefully, and rolled onto his side, pulling Cole with him. He pressed a kiss to Cole's hairline.

"You okay?"

Cole let out a small, breathless laugh. "I'm more than okay."

"Good." Jaxson's arms tightened around him. "Because I'm not done with you yet. We have all night, and I intend to use it."

Cole's heart fluttered. "All night?"

"All night." Jaxson's smile was wolfish. "And then some."

---

The morning light came too soon.

Cole woke to the smell of coffee and the sound of something sizzling. He blinked, disoriented, and realized he was alone in the bed. The sheets were tangled around his legs, and his body ached in ways that made him flush.

He sat up, wincing slightly. The mark on his neck—the claiming bite—throbbed with a pleasant ache, a constant reminder of what had happened.

The door opened, and Jaxson appeared, carrying a tray. He was wearing only a pair of sweatpants, his chest bare, and he looked obscenely good for someone who had spent most of the night thoroughly wrecking Cole.

"Morning," he said, his voice warm with amusement. "You look like you've been through a war."

"Whose war?" Cole muttered.

"Ours." Jaxson set the tray down on the bed. "I made breakfast. Well, I made eggs and toast. It's not much, but—"

"It's perfect." Cole reached for a piece of toast, and Jaxson's hand intercepted his, pressing a kiss to his knuckles.

"Thank you," Jaxson said quietly. "For staying. For trusting me. For—" He gestured vaguely. "Everything."

Cole's throat tightened. "Thank you for giving me a reason to stay."

Jaxson's smile was soft. He sat down on the edge of the bed, looking at Cole with that expression of wonder that made Cole's heart skip.

"What?" Cole asked.

"Just thinking about how we got here." Jaxson shook his head. "A few weeks ago, I was a cold, miserable bastard who couldn't stop thinking about you. And now you're here. In my bed. Wearing my mark."

"Is that a problem?"

"Not even close." Jaxson leaned in, pressing a kiss to the claiming bite. "It's the best thing that's ever happened to me."

Cole's breath caught. He reached up, cupping Jaxson's face in his hands.

"I love you," he said. "I know it's fast. I know we barely know each other. But I love you."

Jaxson's eyes shimmered. "I love you too."

They sat there for a moment, basking in the quiet intimacy of the morning. Then Jaxson pulled back, a mischievous glint in his eye.

"So I was thinking," he said. "About that dinner I promised you."

Cole raised an eyebrow. "A dinner promised in the middle of a heat surge. I didn't think you'd remember."

"I remember everything about you." Jaxson's voice was sincere. "So here's the plan. I'm going to take you out tonight. Somewhere nice. Somewhere with candles and good wine and no distractions. Just us."

Cole felt a warmth spread through his chest that had nothing to do with heat. "That sounds wonderful."

"And then, if you're willing, I'd like to actually take you on a proper date. Not just a spontaneous meeting at work. A real date. Where I pick you up at your apartment and bring you flowers and all of that."

Cole laughed. "You're asking me on a date?"

"Technically, I'm asking you on several dates." Jaxson grinned. "But yes. The first one is tonight."

"Then yes." Cole leaned forward, pressing a kiss to Jaxson's lips. "Yes to tonight. Yes to the flowers. Yes to all of it."

Jaxson's grin widened. "Good. Because I already made reservations."

Cole rolled his eyes. "Presumptuous alpha."

"Confident alpha." Jaxson's hands slid around his waist. "I knew you'd say yes."

"Really? How?"

Jaxson's expression softened. "Because you're mine. And I'm yours. And nothing in this world could keep us apart now."

Cole buried his face in the crook of Jaxson's neck, breathing in the scent of him—sandalwood and warmth and home.

"Yours," he whispered. "Always yours."
