Chapter 2: A Confession in the Dark

The first thing he felt was warmth. A solid, breathing warmth along the length of his side. Then came the scent—vanilla, sleep, her. Aidan surfaced slowly, the deep, dreamless dark of the night receding. Grey pre-dawn light seeped around the edges of the curtains, painting the room in shades of charcoal and slate. He was on his back. Zelda was curled into him, her head a heavy, perfect weight on his chest, one arm flung across his stomach. Her fingers were splayed, her fingertips just touching the band of his jeans.

He didn’t move. He listened to her breathe, felt the expansion of her ribs against his. He saw the fractal patterns of freckles across her shoulder, barely visible in the gloom. His arm was asleep, pinned beneath her, a needles-and-pins numbness setting in. He didn’t care.

Last night wasn’t a dream. The solid proof of it was right here, her breath fogging against his skin through his thin t-shirt. The memory of holding her, the sheer quiet rightness of it, settled in him like a foundational stone.

Her fingers twitched.

Then, slowly, they began to move. A half-conscious exploration. They traced the worn cotton over his sternum, mapped the dip between his ribs. Her touch was sleep-soft, curious. It ignited a line of fire straight down his core.

He swallowed. His heart, which had been steady, began to drum against his ribs. He was sure she could feel it.

Her tracing stilled. He knew she was awake. The quality of her breathing changed, became more deliberate.

“Morning,” she murmured, the word mashed against his chest.

“Morning.” His voice was rough with disuse.

She tilted her head back. In the weak light, her eyes were dark pools, unreadable. She looked at him, really looked, and he felt stripped bare. There was no hiding in this soft, shared space. Her hand slid up, over his pectoral, her thumb brushing the line of his collarbone. It was an unbearably intimate gesture.

“You stayed,” she said.

“You asked me to.”

A small smile touched her lips. “I know. I just didn’t think you would.”

Her fingers found the hem of his t-shirt, touched the strip of skin there. His abdominal muscles clenched involuntarily. Her smile widened, just a fraction. She was watching his face, seeing every reaction.

He raised his free hand—the one not trapped—and cupped the side of her face. Her skin was impossibly soft. His thumb stroked the arch of her cheekbone, moved down to trace the full curve of her bottom lip. She let her mouth fall open a little, her breath warm against his thumb.

That was it. The last thread of his control snapped silently.

He bent his head and kissed her.

It wasn’t tentative. It was a direct, hungry press of mouth to mouth, a release of all the coiled tension from the night, from years of looking and never touching. She made a small, shocked sound against his lips and then she was kissing him back, her hand coming up to fist in his hair, pulling him closer.

Her mouth was soft and hot and tasted of sleep. He licked into it, and she met him with a matching desperation that surprised him, that thrilled him. This wasn’t the quiet librarian. This was a woman unleashed. Her other hand tugged at his t-shirt, rucking it up. He broke the kiss long enough to wrench it over his head, tossing it blindly onto the floor. The cool air hit his skin, then was immediately replaced by the scalding heat of her as she rolled, half on top of him, her leg sliding between his.

The feel of her—the crush of her breasts against his chest, the denim of her pajama shorts rough against his thigh, the wild silk of her hair everywhere—was overwhelming. He was already painfully hard, straining against his jeans. He slid his hands down her back, over the thin cotton of her tank top, cupped the swell of her ass and pulled her tighter against him. She gasped into his mouth, grinding down, a slow, deliberate roll of her hips.

“Aidan,” she breathed, a break in the kiss. Her forehead rested against his. Her eyes were closed.

“Yeah.”

“I need—” She didn’t finish. She kissed him again, sloppy and urgent, her hands scrambling for the button of his jeans.

He helped her, shoving the denim and his briefs down over his hips just enough. She pushed her own shorts down, kicked them away. And then there was nothing between them. Just skin, fever-hot and damp. He groaned, the sound torn from somewhere deep, as she settled over him, her wet heat cradling his length but not taking him in.

She braced her hands on his shoulders, looking down at him. Her curls formed a fiery curtain around their faces. She was breathing hard, her lips swollen from kissing. She looked fierce. Beautiful.

“Tell me what you want,” he said, his voice ragged. He brushed her hair back from her face, his thumb stroking her temple.

“You.” She lowered herself slowly, taking just the head of him inside. They both froze, a mutual shock of sensation. Her eyes widened. “Oh. Oh, god.”

He knew he was big. It had been a point of awkwardness, sometimes discomfort, with others. But the way she looked now—not fearful, but fascinated, awed—undid him completely.

“Okay?” he managed to grit out.

“More than okay.” She sank down another inch, her body stretching to accommodate him, a low, ragged moan escaping her. “Just… slow.”

“Slow,” he agreed, his hands finding her hips, guiding her. He let her set the pace, let her sink down onto him by agonizing, exquisite degrees until he was fully sheathed, buried to the hilt in her tight, clutching heat. They were both shaking. He was buried not just in her body, but in the scent of her, the sight of her above him, the feel of her inner muscles fluttering around him. It was a completeness that stole his breath.

She began to move. A slow, rocking grind that wasn’t just friction, it was a deep, internal massage. His head fell back against the pillow, a string of curses whispering from his lips. He could feel every ridge, every pulse of her. His hands slid up under her tank top, rough palms on the smooth skin of her back, holding her, anchoring himself.

“Look at me,” she whispered.

He forced his eyes open. Her gaze was locked on his, unwavering. In it, he saw trust, and a hunger that mirrored his own, and something else—something vulnerable and raw that looked like love. It terrified him. It exhilarated him. He bucked his hips up, meeting her next downward slide, and she cried out, her rhythm breaking.

“I want to taste you,” he growled, the urge sudden and overpowering. “Let me.”

A vivid blush spread from her chest to her throat. She nodded, biting her lip.

In a fluid motion, he rolled them over, pressing her into the mattress. He kissed his way down her body—the valley between her breasts, the quivering plane of her stomach, the sharp jut of her hipbone. He hooked his hands under her knees, pushing her legs up and apart. She was completely exposed, glistening for him in the dim light. The most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.

He didn’t tease. He put his mouth on her and licked a slow, firm stripe from her opening to her clit.

Her whole body bowed off the bed, a choked scream tearing from her throat. Her hands fisted in his hair, not pushing him away, but holding on. He dove in, learning her by taste and sound, the salty-sweet essence of her, the way she jerked when he circled her clit with the flat of his tongue, the broken pleading that fell from her lips. He felt her tighten, her thighs trembling against his ears. He sucked lightly, and she came apart with a raw, guttural cry, her climax pulsing against his tongue.

He let her ride it out, gentling his touch until she was a boneless, shuddering wreck beneath him. Then he moved up her body, his own need a throbbing, urgent ache. He nudged at her entrance again, slick from her release and his mouth.

“Aidan, please,” she begged, her eyes glazed.

He pushed in, in one smooth, deep stroke. She was impossibly tighter now, sensitized, her inner muscles clutching him in rhythmic waves. He set a deliberate, deep pace, each thrust punching a soft, desperate sound from her lips. He watched her face, watched every flicker of pleasure, every wince of overstimulation that turned into renewed need. He was losing himself in her, in the slap of skin, the creak of the bed, the animal sounds they were both making.

He felt the pressure coiling at the base of his spine, a seismic build. He was close. So close. “Zelda,” he gasped, a warning, a question.

Her legs locked around his waist, her heels digging into his ass. “Inside. Do it. I want to feel it.”

Her words, so blunt, so hungry, tipped him over the edge. With a final, driving thrust, he buried himself as deep as he could go and came. It was a raw, violent release, waves of pleasure so intense they bordered on pain, emptying himself into her with a shuddering groan. He collapsed on top of her, his weight driving her deeper into the mattress, his face buried in the sweaty curve of her neck.

For a long time, there was only the sound of their ragged breathing syncing, slowing. The grey light had turned to pale gold. Sun was coming.

His softening length slipped from her body, and he felt the warm, wet evidence of their joining seep between them. The reality of it—the visceral, physical proof—should have felt messy, awkward. With anyone else, it might have. With her, it just felt true.

He rolled to his side, taking her with him, not letting her go. She nestled into him, her back to his chest, his arms wrapping around her. He pressed a kiss to the damp, fragrant skin of her shoulder.

She was quiet. Then her hand came up and covered his where it rested on her stomach. Her fingers laced through his.

“Nobody’s ever…” she started, then stopped. Her voice was husky. “I’ve never felt that. Seen like that. Like you were mapping me.”

He held her tighter. He understood. He’d felt it too—a transparency, a total exposure that left no room for the careful walls he usually maintained. He’d been seen, all his rough edges and buried tenderness, and she hadn’t flinched.

As they lay there, the sun painting a bold stripe across the rumpled quilt, a secret thought flickered in the back of Zelda’s mind, sharp and shocking in its clarity. She thought of his intense, focused gaze on her as he moved above her, the way he’d watched every reaction. A heat that had nothing to do with aftermath flushed through her. The fantasy, usually a vague, private shame, crystallized with sudden, terrifying specificity.

What if someone else was watching?

She pushed the thought down, deep, burying it under the solid, reassuring weight of his arm across her. But it was there now, a live wire in the quiet, morning-after calm.
