Chapter 3: The Queue Forms
The taste of Marcus was a stain. It lived in the crevices of her teeth, at the back of her tongue, a bitter echo with every swallow. Mary sat very still, feeling the cold wet patch on her shirt cling to her skin, feeling the slick dryness of her own saliva coating her chin. She was an empty vessel, vibrating with a strange, hollow energy. The screen’s flickering light seemed weaker now, the grunts and moans from the speakers distant, tinny. Her own reality was the sticky vinyl under her thighs, the ache in her jaw, the raw, throbbing need between her legs that had not been touched, only amplified.
A shadow detached itself from the wall near the exit door. It moved toward her without the predatory certainty of Marcus or the cautious calibration of Leo. This was a shuffle, a hesitant drift through the half-dark.
He stopped a few feet from her row, a silhouette. Then he took a step closer, into the ambient glow from the screen. He was older, maybe fifties, with a round, soft face and thin hair plastered across a sweaty scalp. He wore a plain, stained windbreaker. His eyes, wide behind thick glasses, were fixed on her mouth, still glistening.
He didn’t speak. He didn’t grin or leer. His expression was one of profound, almost painful need. His hands trembled as he fumbled with his zipper. The sound was loud in the relative quiet. He pushed his pants down over his hips, just enough. His cock sprung out, already fully hard, a thick, short length standing straight up from a nest of grey hair. The head was dark and slick, beaded with moisture.
He took another step, now at the end of her row. He simply stood there, offering himself. His eyes pleaded. Please.
A dark, electric thrill shot through Mary’s numbness. This was different. No commands, no rough guidance, no false patience. Just silent, trembling offering. Her own hunger, now a sophisticated monster, recognized it instantly. This was a transaction in its purest form. Her mouth had value. Her use had currency.
She didn’t wait for an invitation that wouldn’t come. She slid off her seat and onto her knees on the filthy carpet. The gesture felt instinctual, liturgical. She heard a sharp, shuddering intake of breath above her.
Up close, he smelled of laundry soap and nervous sweat. She reached out a hand, her fingers closing around his shaft. It was fever-hot, the skin like thin velvet over solid, pulsing core. She guided him towards her face. He moaned, a high, tight sound, as the head bumped against her lips. She opened, letting her tongue dart out to taste this new offering. Saltier, milder than Marcus. Cleaner.
She took him in.
He was too thick for the deep, choking pace Marcus had set. She worked him with her mouth and hand in tandem, her lips stretched around the crown, her tongue massaging the frenulum, her fist pumping the base. Her other hand crept between her own legs, pressing hard against the denim of her jeans, seeking relief for the frantic ache there.
“Oh god,” the man whispered, his voice reedy and broken. “Oh, sweet girl. Yes. Just like that.”
His hands came down to gently cradle her head, his touch shockingly tender amidst the grime. His hips began a shallow, rocking motion, pushing himself a little deeper with each sway. She could feel the tension coiling in his thighs, hear the ragged catch in his breath.
“I’m close, I’m so close,” he panted. “Where… where do you want it?”
The question, so considerate, so utterly absurd in this place, broke something in her. A filthy laugh bubbled up around his cock, making him shudder. She pulled back, his wet length popping from her lips. She looked up at his blurred, grateful face.
“Does it matter?” she asked, her voice hoarse from use.
She didn’t wait for an answer. She leaned in again, taking him deep, urging him with a hard suck. That was all it took. He cried out, a short, sharp sound, and his release flooded her mouth. It was copious, warmer, less bitter than the others. She swallowed dutifully, mechanically, her own hand grinding against her clit through the fabric, chasing a peak that felt miles away.
When he was spent, she released him. He sagged, hastily tucking himself away, his face a mask of bewildered gratitude. He fumbled in his pocket, pulled out a crumpled ten-dollar bill, and pressed it into her damp hand.
“Thank you,” he mumbled, not meeting her eyes, and then he shuffled quickly away, vanishing into the darkness from whence he came.
Mary stared at the money in her hand. The paper felt alien. She let it fall to the carpet. The laugh threatened again, hysterical and thin. She was the theater’s whore. A warm, wet hole for any man who asked nicely, or didn’t ask at all. The knowledge settled into her bones, cold and final.
As she climbed back into her seat, wiping her mouth with her sleeve, she saw him. Leo. He was standing in the aisle a few rows back, leaning against a crumbling pillar, watching her. He wasn’t smiling. His rugged face was unreadable in the dim light. How long had he been there?
He didn’t approach. He just watched. And in that gaze, she saw not the predatory hunger of Marcus or the desperate need of the silent man, but something else. A recognition. An assessment. As if he was seeing the finished product of what he’d helped start.
Mary held his look, her chin raised. She felt a new hardness forming inside her, a shell around the hollow, hungry core. She was no longer a girl in over her head. She was what this place had made her.
Leo gave a slow, almost imperceptible nod. Then he pushed off the pillar and began walking, not towards her, but down the aisle, toward the back hallway.
