Bryce, a reclusive game developer with a cult following, gets more than he bargained for when his bubbly, yoga-pant-clad neighbor Lana tries out the real-life firmware update on his new master rig. The HOA will definitely hear about this.

Chapter 3: The Point of No Return

The scent of patchouli and lemongrass hit Brice the moment Willow’s door swung open, a stark contrast to the ozone-and-old-pizza atmosphere of his own apartment. He’d come straight from work, the forgotten VR helmet a lead weight of guilt in his bag. The takeout containers from last night’s impromptu dinner were still stacked neatly on her counter, a small, domestic detail that felt strangely intimate.

“Willow?” he called out, his voice too quiet in the vibrant, cluttered space.

He found her in the living room, exactly where he’d left her, but the scene was entirely different. The vibrant woman was gone, replaced by a taut wire of concentration. She was still in the VR rig, her body coiled on the mat she’d laid out. A fine sheen of sweat made her tank top cling to her back, and her muscles trembled with a persistent, exhausted twitch. Her fingers, clad in haptic gloves, spasmed in the air, grappling with some unseen foe. She’d been in there for hours. Too long.

“Willow, you need to log out,” he said, louder this time, stepping closer.

There was no response, just a sharp, hissed intake of breath as her avatar doubtless faced another digital peril. The twitching in her legs intensified. This wasn’t healthy; the system had safety protocols for a reason. He made a decision. He’d have to manually disengage her. He moved behind her, his hands reaching for the clasps at the base of the helmet.

It was the wrong approach.

The moment his fingers brushed the composite material, her entire body exploded into motion. It wasn’t a conscious reaction to him; it was pure, honed instinct translated from the game. She dropped her weight, a fluid quickroll that was impossibly fast, evading his grasp as if he were a telegraphed enemy attack. His own momentum carried him forward, off-balance.

Before he could even process the evasion, she countered.

Her body uncoiled like a spring. One leg hooked behind his knee while an arm, solid and stronger than he could have imagined, snaked around his torso. The world tilted. He was airborne for a breathtaking second, a tangle of lanky limbs and utter shock, before he landed hard on the woven rug, the breath whooshing from his lungs.

And then she was on him.

Her knees pinned his hips to the floor, her weight settling firmly against him. The VR helmet was inches from his face, a blank, black visor hiding her eyes. Her hands, still in their haptic gloves, pressed his wrists into the rug above his head. He was trapped. Completely and utterly pinned beneath the bubbly yoga instructor he’d shared lo mein with twelve hours ago.

For a long, suspended moment, there was only the sound of their ragged breathing. His from the impact and the dizzying shock. Hers, he realized, from the prolonged exertion of the game. He could feel the frantic beat of her heart where her chest pressed against his, a wild drum syncopated against his own hammering pulse.

Then, a shift. A slow, dawning awareness seemed to seep into her body. The combat-ready tension in her shoulders eased by a fraction. Her head, encased in the helmet, tilted slowly, as if she were truly seeing him for the first time.

A staticky, distorted whisper emerged from the helmet’s speaker. “Brice?”

The sound of his name, filtered through digital distortion while she was physically on top of him, sent a jolt straight through his system. It was the most surreal and acutely real moment of his life.

“Yeah,” he managed, his voice rough. “It’s me. You… you quickrolled me.”

A breathy laugh, also distorted, crackled in the air. Her grip on his wrists loosened, but she didn’t let go. Instead, one of her gloved hands slid slowly from his wrist down his forearm, the haptic feedback pads a whisper of pressure against his skin. The movement was no longer a restraint. It was an exploration.

“Your vitals are spiking,” she murmured, the game’s bio-feedback evidently still feeding her data. Her other hand released his wrist and came up to the side of his face, the cool, synthetic material of the glove a stark contrast to the heat flooding his cheeks. She traced the line of his jaw, a slow, deliberate caress that made every coherent thought in his head short-circuit.

He was hyper-aware of everything: the press of her knees, the softness of her thighs against his sides, the scent of her sweat mixed with the essential oils, the impossible intimacy of being studied by a blank visor. He, who spent his life building digital worlds, had never felt so terrifyingly, wonderfully present in his own physical body.

Her thumb stroked the pulse point hammering in his throat.

“Brice?” she whispered again, her voice clearing, the distortion fading as if she was stepping back from the game and into the room, into this moment, into him.

He couldn’t speak. He could only nod, a tiny, desperate motion, his world having narrowed to the points where her body met his.

“I’m so sorry,” she whispered, her breath warm through the helmet’s grille. Her gloved hand continued its slow path from his jawline down the column of his throat. “Things got a little… weird after you left.”

He swallowed hard, feeling the pressure of her fingers against his Adam’s apple. “Weird how?”

“Well,” she said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial hush that vibrated through him. “I got turned into a vampire on level fifty-three.” The statement was so absurd, so delivered with her characteristic bright curiosity, that his brain stuttered trying to process it. It was just a game, a series of his own code, but the intensity in her posture suggested something else entirely.

Then she moved.

She didn’t release his wrists. Instead, she leaned down, her helmet brushing against his cheek as she nuzzled into the space between his shoulder and neck. He froze, every muscle locking. Her breath hitched, a soft, theatrical gasp. “And now,” she murmured, her lips hovering a millimeter from his skin, “I have this just… overwhelming craving.”

Her mouth found the frantic pulse at the side of his neck.

It wasn't a bite. Not at first. It was a slow, open-mouthed kiss, a suction that pulled at his skin and sent a shockwave of pure, undiluted sensation straight to his core. His glasses dug into the bridge of his nose as he instinctively tilted his head back, granting her better access, a silent surrender that shocked him. A low, humming sound vibrated from her throat into his flesh.

Her hips shifted against his, a slow, deliberate roll that made him gasp. The haptic gloves were gone, tossed aside, and her bare fingers now tangled in his hair, holding him in place with a gentle firmness. She sucked again, slower this time, more sensual, and a broken sound escaped him. His own hands, now free, hovered uselessly in the air before settling tentatively on her waist, feeling the damp fabric of her tank top and the solid muscle beneath.

The logical part of his mind, the part that wrote the game’s bestiary and knew a vampire’s kiss was just a clever animation, was utterly offline. All that remained was the feeling of her weight, the scent of her, the devastating rhythm of her mouth on his neck. She laved the spot with her tongue, soothing the skin she’d been devouring, and he felt a shudder run through his entire body.

“See?” she breathed against his damp skin, her voice thick with a playful, dark hunger. “Not so bad, is it?”

Her whisper was a warm, damp ghost against the throbbing skin of his neck. The world had dissolved into the weight of her, the scent of her, the startling reality of her mouth on him. His brain, usually a symphony of precise code, was now just static and wildfire. He felt the words form, clumsy and breathless, a desperate attempt to anchor this surreal moment back into the game they’d shared.

“Did you just… turn me into a vampire?”

Willow went still for a heartbeat, then lifted her head. The blank visor of her helmet regarded him, but he could feel her smile, a sharp, wicked thing in the dark. Her voice dropped, layering a theatrical gravity over a core of genuine command. “Yes. That means I’m your master now.” She shifted her hips against him, a deliberate, grinding pressure that made him gasp. “You have to do what I say.”

He swallowed, his throat dry. The part of him that lived in logic screamed this was insane, but the part of him that was pinned beneath her, burning up, only wanted to play along. To see where this led. His voice was a rough, surrendered whisper. “What is thy bidding, my master?”

Her answer was immediate, a husky demand laced with amusement. “Feed me.”

Then her mouth was on him again, but not his neck. She nuzzled the collar of his shirt aside, her lips finding the sharp line of his collarbone. She sucked a patch of skin there into the heat of her mouth, her tongue tracing the bone. Her hands, now free of the gloves, slid under his hoodie, under his thin t-shirt, her palms flat and warm against the tense planes of his stomach. He jerked at the contact, a full-body flinch of pure, unadulterated sensation. His own hands tightened on her waist, fingers digging into the resilient muscle he’d only ever watched from a distance in her yoga studio.

She was everywhere at once, a whirlwind of softness and strength, her mouth mapping a slow, devastating path across his chest through the fabric. He could feel the damp spot her mouth left behind, a brand that cooled instantly in the air, only to be replaced by another. A low, helpless sound escaped him, something between a groan and a plea. This was nothing like his code, nothing like the predictable, controllable world he had built. This was chaos. This was alive.

And he was utterly, completely consumed by it.

Her mouth was a brand, her hands a revelation mapping the unfamiliar territory of his body. He was a code being rewritten in real time, his usual syntax of logic and isolation collapsing into a raw, gasping language of sensation.

She ruined him.

Every guarded part of him was laid bare under her relentless, curious attention. The careful walls he’d built around himself for years crumbled into dust under the press of her hips and the suction of her mouth. He was not a genius here, not a developer; he was just sensation, a nervous system screaming to life under her command. A sharp, breathy cry escaped him as her teeth grazed his nipple, the shock of it white-hot and electric.

She drained him dry.

The frantic energy that had sustained him through a sleepless night and a day of anxious coding evaporated, siphoned out through every point of contact. His thoughts dissolved into a warm, heavy static. The constant hum of the world, both digital and real, faded into a profound silence filled only by the sound of her breathing and his own pounding heart slowing to a weary, satisfied thrum.

Then, as suddenly as it began, the storm in her stilled.

Her body went limp, all the fierce, yoga-toned muscle yielding into a soft, warm weight. She collapsed on top of him with a final, exhausted sigh, her head coming to rest on his chest. One hand lay splayed over his heart, while her mouth, in a final, unconscious act of possession, found his other nipple.

She began to suckle, gently, rhythmically.

It was not a gesture of passion anymore, but one of profound, instinctual comfort. The sensation was so bizarre, so intimately startling, that he froze. He lay there, pinned beneath her, feeling the gentle, persistent pull at his skin. His own arousal, a sharp, urgent thing moments before, softened into a confused, deep-seated warmth that spread through his veins like a drug.

He was both scared and aroused.

Terrified of this vulnerability, of the sheer physical reality of another person claiming him so completely in his sleep. Yet, beneath the fear, a thrilling current of rightness hummed. His hands, which had been gripping her waist, relaxed, one coming up to tentatively rest on the bare skin of her back. He felt the steady rise and fall of her breathing, the soft, sucking motion at his chest, and the last of his resistance melted away.

The weight of her was an anchor, holding the shattered pieces of him together.

His eyes grew heavy, the dim light of her apartment blurring into a soft haze. The scent of her hair, sweat and lemongrass, filled his lungs with every deepening breath. The fear and the arousal began to blur at the edges, merging into a single, overwhelming exhaustion. His last conscious thought was a distant echo of her game-world whisper. You have to do what I say.

And as sleep pulled him under, he obeyed.
